€4m Barca flop who once said 'I'd like to play for LFC' wants Prem move. Bid...?

The Agent of alleged Liverpool target Ibrahim Afellay has confirmed that the Barcelona attacker wants a move to the Premier League this summer.

Last summer, Afellay snubbed the Reds loan deal offer and opted to join Schalke instead, and several newspapers are now linking the Dutchman with a move to Anfield during the current transfer window.

When asked last week about interest from Spurs and Liverpool, the player’s agent Rob Jansen, told reporters:

"The Premier League is very tempting for Ibrahim. It is a strong possibility for his next move"

Afellay certainly holds the Reds in high regard. In 2010, he told reporters:

"Playing in the Premier League would be best for my prestige. I’d like to play for Liverpool or Manchester United, the top-level prospect for any player"

Afellay made this comment in October 2010, at the height of Liverpool's ownership meltdown, so a move to Anfield now will probably be a much more enticing prospect.

Having said that, Afellay has not played a single minute of football since sustaining a muscle injury last November. That's over six months on the sidelines, and after that amount of time out, it would take a while to get back into the swing of things.

The risk is somewhat assuaged by the the comparatively meagre transfer fee, with Barcelona reportedly willing to let Afellay go for €4m.

In terms of squad depth, Afellay would arguably be a decent player to have in the squad, perhaps as a direct replacement for Oussama Assaidi. Should Liverpool go in for him...?

  2. For that price, he would be a good option.
But I get the impression that he is probably on quite high wages at Barca, so would probably still want a lot. Which, if he were to be backup, would probably not be worth it.

  3. No. Gets injured more than Kirkland

  4. Liverpool with selling carroll shelvey 35% for ince 23mil got the 4 new signings on cheap total 23 mil spent zero in total he would be our budget when we sell spearing. But he did not want to come to us when we wanted him and he really has done nothing . we need now three signings defender midfield and striker that's it.

  5. £4m for a player unlikely to contribute much/anything would still be a collosal waste of money...

The time for us to take a punt on Affellay/him to take a punt on us has come and gone.

  6. I think the time for this deal came and gone, The only time i have recently thought of him as a better option to anyone was when we were being linked to Ben Arfa.
A player with huge injury concerns, Obvious talent but where we are at currently i dont think we can take the risk.

  7. I'd say he said that back in 2010 because he probably hadn't been following Liverpool too closely and still thought we were up there in the top 3 teams in the country!

Looks like spearing on his way to Wigan. 3 million... Hopefully! Done quiet well getting rid of dead wood. Carroll 15.5 with 2 million add ons then loan fee 2 million and another 2 million for staying up...(21.5 million) shelvey-5 million upfront then 1 million in add ons, then spearing 3 million... :)

  12. So what? Afellay is a bad deal for Liverpool if he is on high wages, I agree. But I don't agree why can't a player reject Liverpool? What are we upto since last 4 seasons anyway? Are you expecting player to join Liverpool for its history? Right now, Liverpool can only sign player if they can offer 1) Guaranteed first team football 2) Handsome wages.

  13. If those reports are accurate then this is a very good start to the summer window for BR. I think downing deserves at least one more season for the improvement he made, but if he's the next to go, I won't be surprised at all

  14. STEWART DOWNING improving on his first season performances wasn't exactly mission impossible. If we get a decent offer from whoever we should sell and get someone more productive!

  15. I'd only consider a loan move for him (with an option to buy) based on his recent injury. Decent player if he can regain full fitness.

  16. I agree. But I'll be the first to hold up my hand and say that I couldn't wait for him to leave after his first season. People will say Hendo is the most improved player but looking at the totality of their improvements I think Downing was immense. I had conversations with people who would have rather thrown Downing to the reserves than see him play another match! But fair play to him, he put his head down and became a fixture in the team and did well. For that alone I think he deserves another season because most would have caved in under the abuse the fans were giving the lad
