Third-time lucky: LFC chase ex-Barca star with £25m buyout clause. Bad idea...?

Prior to signing Coutinho during the January transfer window, Portuguese newspaper Jornal Record claimed that Liverpool were chasing Sporting Lisbon attacker Jeffren Suarez, a player the Reds have considered several times over the last few years. New reports suggest that Suarez is back on the Reds' radar, and he could be available at a knockdown price.

According to reports over the weekend in Italy and the UK, Liverpool are considering a firm bid for the Spanish star, who spent five years at Barcelona early in his career.

At the end of November 2012, Jornal claimed that Liverpool were considering an offer for the winger:

"Liverpool are willing to offer £6m for Jeffrén. The Reds are strongly interested in acquiring the player, initially on loan until end of the season with an option to purchase"

The Reds tried to sign Jeffrén once before in 2011, and at the time, the 24-year old directly confirmed the club's interest. He told radio station Cadena Ser:

"It makes me proud that teams like Liverpool are interested in me. We’ll see what happens."

Jeffrén ended up signing a 5-year deal with Sporting Lisbon, and his contract contains a €30 million buy-out clause, as well as a €12m buy-back clause for Barcelona.

Jeffren is the type of player who will fit into Brendan Rodgers' 433 formation, but his creative stats are clearly not good enough:

* 2 goal/no assists in 17 appearances last season season.
* 5 goals/1 assist in 33 appearances overall for Lisbon.

Additionally, Jeffren has barely made 70 appearances in the last four completed seasons, which seems to suggest some kind of underlying issue. He may be cheap, but there surely have to be better options out there...?

  1. spend it elsewhere. how much do you think that young chap redmond from birmingham would cost? they are still in financial trouble arent they, he might have a better chance of succeeding at LFC that Jeffren.
But then again im just throwing out a random name :P!!

  7. He must think he's found LUIS Suarez. That's what you get when you live abroad for a while. You lose touch with what is going on at home..

reason could be no need stop the production line for printing the word "suarez " at no7

  9. Ayew or Capoue! If we really want to improve we should get M'vila. He's like Lucas but mobile and stronger

  11. Very lazy paper talk (that only made it to one or two UK outlets) and I'm sure we could all cut and paste our idea from the last time this was banded around. But it is worth noting that creative stats that simply focus on assists and goals don't do justice to more rounded outputs such as pass rate/completion, chances created, shots on target etc etc etc.

At 25 years old the player has plenty of time to fulfil what was and is seen in some Barcelona cirlces as significant potential.

But if the transfer committee was reading this or any other post I'd throw in McManaman as an interesting purchase (interesting that the rumours have died down), or perhaps Hoilett. But as they aren't I guess I'll just have to buy them on football manager and test my idea on the bus to work.

  15. and what happened to Luis Alberto, Sergi Canos, Tello, Afellay and Cuenca. Should we buy 25% share in La Masia?

  16. seems you are playing on low budget .... buy Griezmann if you got the money. Amazing left winger...keeps on scoring and assisting 1 per match at least...

  20. Thought I read it online. He is included on the wikipage but anyone could edit that. Nothing on lfc.com.

  21. Wiki is a bit off right now mate. two weeks ago someone changed it so it also said he played for Liverpool right now. It`s prob true that the deal is done, but someone has been having a laugh with the wiki page. Just look at the edits section and you will see how many times people keep changing his club.

I remember when Ronadlo was leaving utd, someone changed it to current club is Rotherham lol

  22. Kiessling thats who I want and im suprised no one ever mentions his name. He has performed to a high level, scoring lots of goals for the last five years. Yes he is 29, but his medal list is so short, I imagine he might like the chance to play in a different league and wont be so concerned about CL as he isnt in a winning team (good team yes but they dont win the german league or cups - hardly ever anyway).

  23. you rate him huh? At the start of the season I didn`t think he would be that worth getting but having seen our style I have to agree he would fit well. You think he would do well for us then Chan?

  24. I think he is potentially the best wide forward/midfielder they have (well apart from maybe Neymar now). He fits the system well like Pedro (though Pedro's form has been mehhh) but offers more individually than Pedro, Sanchez or Villa in that position. He isn't afraid to do things on his own, which is hard and brave thing to do in a side like Barca. He has probably been better all three of players this season from the games I've seen, despite not having much playing time. Excluding Messi of old, probably been their best option out wide in terms of performances since Pedro's best form a 2/3 seasons ago. Messi has taken things up a level since playing through the middle but the performances out wide from others has gone backwards.

He isn't the finished article, not even close but even now, he has got this directness and eagerness to his game to make an impact for us in PL, a bit like Coutinho in that regard, although somewhat a little different in playing style (bit more direct and narrow minded. He does suffer a bit from that gambling/odd decision making nature that young wingers can have). I think he would fit in with our play, as his movement on and off the ball is very good, even if his end product can frustrate sometimes.

One or two players need to leave as Neymar has arrived.

  25. Looks a very good option then. Do you think Barca would let him go though? From what you say he seems like a real talent for them. Or is it a case of his face dont fit there? I know Barca can sometimes not play some really good players as they have there prefered stars.

  26. Seems more like a case of contract problems. He apparently has a low release clause. What is strange is that he signed a extension last year but they still kept the release clause low. I don't think they want to let him go this summer but the low release clause means they may not have any choice.

They do seem to want to still not give up on Sanchez yet, even though it seems like they are willing to let Villa ago. One or two players will leave to make room for Neymar.

  28. nope. 20mil is pretty pricey. He is def talented, and would def improve us a shed load, but I would have thought 15/16mil would have been a fair price. Although cash wise is it prob better to pay 20mil and get the man you want, i think it adds extra pressure to the player. For 20mil you have to hit the ground running. Say for 15mil you just get that little bit more time. However I would rather spend 20mil on him, than 10mil on two average players, but it aint my money lol
