'It was my dream' - African hero claims transfer to LFC was 'blocked'. Big loss...?

In recent months, Leeds United legend Tony Yeboah has regularly advised Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu to join Liverpool, and in his latest interview on the subject, the former striker revealed an interesting tidbit of information about his own career that Liverpool fans may find interesting.

A few months ago, Tony Yeboah argued that Atsu could 'shine in the Premier League' and achieve everything he wants to' in English football, and this week, the Leeds United again urged Atsu to join Liverpool. He told Ghanaweb:

"They [Liverpool] are playing some good football and their new manager allows the youth to play. It [a move to Anfield] is a nice opportunity to take his [Atsu's] game to the next level. It will benefit his development. "

Yeboah then added:

"Liverpool is the biggest team in England. It was my dream to play for them, but Leeds blocked any move when the chance came"

Yeboah played for Leeds between 1995 and 1997, which means Roy Evans must have tried to sign him at some point. I don't recall any speculation from that period linking the Reds with Yeboah, so it was clearly a hush-hush approach.

It seems that Evans wanted another forward at the club to compete with Robbie Fowler and Stan Collymore. Evans signed Collymore in July 1995, and didn't sign another striker until Karl-Heinze Riedle in 1997, which is after Yeboah left Leeds. I can see two possible scenarios:

* Evans wanted to bring in Yeboah to replace Ian Rush, who left Anfield at the end of the 1995-6 season.

* Given the friction between Evans and Collymore, the Reds boss wanted to bring in Yeboah as a way of reducing Collymore's role in the team.

The Ghanaian hitman grabbed 32 goals in 66 appearances for Leeds, which is a creditable return, and with his brute power, he would've been an interesting addition to the Liverpool squad.

  11. I doubt the club would earn more money with other owners. And we can only spend what we earn. You are the only Liverpool fan I came across who seems to welcome the idea of us being the play-thing of some sheik.

  12. i do not care who owns us as long as they have deep pockets and more importantly if they have not ,do not shoot thier mouth off telling us we can compete with any club in the world when it comes to transfers ,mark my words it will all end in tears with fsg

  13. Leroy Fer? Spurs are taking a look at him, maybe we should hit them back and take interest. Fer is pretty good for his age as well

  14. Well he's played less than 20 games of first team football so he does fit the profile we're looking for.

  15. Downing is not our best player? Does he know that too?

To be fair, Swansea signed Michu, Villa signed Weimann and Benteke, Everton signed Fellaini etc. Also who/where was Bale when Spurs signed him? Was he even on par with Walcott at that stage in his development?

Jason, owners can't spend so much £££££ now because of the FFp, what part don't you understand? We have OUTSPENT every team in the prem accept city and Chelsea, we have just spent it wrong. That's the managers fault NOT FSG.

Few figures for you from the last 2 season we've spent 76.150.000(76 million) Chelsea-135.200.000(135 million) man city-88.250.000(88 million) also you've got to put in the 80 million they got for CL for two season, because when you get into CL you get 40 million. So we've spent ALOT without CL. Now put your FSG vendetta away :)

  19. Tony Yeboah not only have brute strength, he has good ball controlling skills as well. He would have been a great addition to the team then. But those were history as we all know. For now, who is departing this summer will be the greatest concern of all. Any updates on the departure of AC and LS? How about Reina and Skrtel? No no please no more nonsensical last minute shit again.

  20. People tend to be forgetful. It's just not too long ago, 2 seasons ago to be exact, KD and Comolli just threw away big chunk of money into the sea. A sum of money that is fearsome even to the likes of the 'oil & gas' clubs. BR is guilty of doing the same, but on a considerably much less extend.

I know you will say that KD's signing come good. Actually I don't know how to price a footballer. All I know is with reference to a piece of merchandise, when selling price is lower than buy price, it's a lousy piece of business. We already made a concrete lost in Charlie Adam. AC, needless to say. SD, you can try selling him to other clubs at 20 mil pounds and we shall see. As for JH, you will not get back the 16 mil pounds for him either. He's now a good solid young player but he's far from a finished article. If we can get players as good as him at half his price, coutinho as example, so can other clubs.

No worries, your favourite BR is no exception. We will not get back the amount we spent on JA, Borini and Assaidi (maybe). But at least he now has Coutinho and DS on his book. LS was actually scouted by Hodgson but his arrival was 3 weeks after Hodgson's sacking so I'm not sure if KD had a hand in LS's arrival.

Obviously you did not follow what I said in a reply to your post previously. Take out a calculator and add up the total amount of money FSG spent since their took over. If I'm John Henry, I should be crying bitterly now for the amount of money wasted by these managers on players, if and only if my intention is to buy LFC without using my own money, channel a large chunk of the club's revenue into my own pocket and sell it away for a huge profit after I bleed it dry thoroughly.

  21. Bale was at Southampton with Walcott but Walcott left before Bale.

    ReplyDelete
  22. That would be tears of joy, right!

Well, I don't like the idea of our club and it's success depending on the goodwill of one single person with deep pockets.

  23. Do you honestly agree that we should be comparing LFC to Chelsea and Arsenal, both London clubs and in the CL?
CL status is the biggest factor when looking for top players. Mkhitaryan is going to cost as much as Higuain or close to.

  24. He's still convinced that he's right.

Jason- Name me ONE club, WORLDWIDE, that has spent more than us in the time since FSG took over who DIDN'T have oil or state funding. So, no City, Chelsea, PSG Russian obligarchs, with their billionaires and interest free bailouts.

    Just ONE.

    last 3 seasons, we spent £86m, £57m and £59m. £202m.

MORE than Bayern Munich, Man Utd, Barca, and Real Madrid. Source: transfer market . co uk
Now. PLEASE quit going on about how we can't compete financially. IF we get CL status, we will get the Cavanis of this world. Until then , it's shop smart.

  25. My figures are purely spend, since we are talking about ability to fund transfers here. Of course, we already know we are 3rd in net spend in the PL

That is correct! He was a nobody whom at that point, you couldn't say he'd walk into any team.
