Photo Proof: LFC's 'excited' £8m new signing checks-in at Anfield.

Over the weekend, Celta Vigo star Iago Aspas publicly confirmed that a move to Liverpool Fc is on the cards, and with the attacker at Melwood right now undergoing a medical, it seems likely that the deal will be announced today, or sometime this week.

In an interview with Spanish newspaper MARCA on Sunday, Aspas - who will reportedly cost the Reds €10m - enthused:

"When I heard of Liverpool's interest I did not hesitate even for a minute. It is one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"I also had offers from Italy and Portugal and other countries I decided that my future was in English football.

"I am very calm and very excited because I am making a very significant step forward in my sporting career".

Here is a photo** of Aspas on the way to his medical with LFC Doctor Zaf Iqbal:

Aspas clearly wants to join Liverpool, and unless he changes his mind - or he fails the medical - he'll be a Reds player soon rather than later.

Is this a good deal, though?

At the age of 25, he has only 136 senior appearances, and the Spaniard is hardly a prolific goalscorer. Having said that, 12 goals/7 assists in 34 La Liga games is a creditable return, so maybe he's on an upward curve...

  1. He has about the same top flight experience as Michu had when he moved to Swansea and remember how baffled some people were that Michu wasn't snapped up by a bigger club for only 2M?

Additionally Michu scored more from Midfield but has only 2 assists Aspas had 7 assists and 12 goals take that how you want it but he looks a good addition give him some time. And 12 goals in a team that scored only 37? That's almost exactly 1/3 of his entire teams goals, leaning more towards optimism than fear.

  2. i for one am excited this i the upgrade on downing we all have been waiting for :)

  3. He is hungry to play for a good team and Liverpool are that, the only way is up for us. He adds that pace and creativity that we always wanted, BR seems to be getting it right more often now. He is known as a worker in Spain, very aggressive too, he loves football and was at Celta from the age of 8 years-old, we need more hungry players like this!!!.

  4. I read somewhere the other day that only Messi and Ronaldo contributed more goals and assists (% wise) of the teams total. I also watched a few clips of him and he definitely looks like a good player. Fast, skillful and seems to love 1on1s. Reckon this could turn out to be a very good deal. Look forward to seeing him in action.

  5. am extremely excited about this signing!!

  6. Liverpool will have outrageous pace this coming season, something we haven't had across the pitch for years. Multiple quick players attacking together, all having the creativity to dismantle teams, we scored 71 goals in the PL last season, I see us obliterating that.

  8. not even close

  9. Our team needs another pacey tricky winger a cover for lucas and a defender which can read the game and can partner agger. we also need someone who can sit and can make darting runs into the box like yaya does for city.
so far our business has gone well but im still a bit apprehensive for this season if suarez leaves as thats another world class player we've moulded and has moved.

  10. I think that is the mentality that BR wants and is looking for players of that kind. Idk but I have a good feeling that BR is gonna make LFC what it was in the past, it might be too much what am saying but who knows he might be the next SAF(for LFC OFC). ;) :P

  11. I'm not saying he's bad or anything I just hope he doesn't get the same treatment as him. How would you describe him as a player because I haven't seen much of him and the youtube videos don't tell the whole story.

  12. Could be more to do with his heart, does he take a kick or disappear????

  13. Pace, skills, finishing n most of all the passion to b here. YNWA Aspas!!

  14. Lets hope that he is going to be a good addition for us , but also we badly need goalscoring right wing , with Downing not scoring and not making goals that area must covered ,and of course another strong first team center back... also we may need defensive midfilder someone like Diame or Tiote.

  15. 'photo proof' - No, no, no, don't be so quick to call it 'proof' of anything. Any interviews, comments, photos, etc, should be subjected to convenient 'context' analysis, as seems to be the excuse, oops, i mean fashion these days.

  16. Just hope he adapts quickly and does well for us

    ReplyDelete
  17. if you buy someone for 8m you give him a good treatment ... Just my opinion :)
Mhh its hard so compare him with someone in our team, fact is hes much more proven than assaidi !!

I'm looking forward to him signing, pace, strength, and he hassles defenders like Suarez does, imagine if Suarez stayed and them two upfront the defender won't have any rest lol, then add sturridges pace. Would be good to watch,

The way Suarez keeps on advertising himself in the shop window suggests that he might not be at Anfield come the start of next season.

Benteke scoring lots of goals for Aston Villa may not mean he will score lots of goals for a big and by the sound of it, Lambert wants 40 million for Benteke which is laughable. Who is going to pay that for a player who has had one good season in the EPL at a club that was fighting relegation?

  22. "CELTA VIGO is not a club I follow so I can't remember him play" your exact words, kinda makes your comments SILLY, dont you think?

  23. Lewandwski is not going to Bayern, that's what bvb promised to its fans ..
anyways I just can't see Bayern going for a scandal player like Suarez... ;)
maybe its atletico who will try to get suarez, they just lost their best man... We will see, but whatever happens i won't be bothered. IMO Suarez is free to leave, but if he does stay and behaves next season its alright too !! Either a lot of money or a world class player, I think were in a good position :)

I see it the same way, I trust Rodgers to spend the money wisely if he sold :-)

  25. You think every fan who thinks it's a good signing has seen him play in matches and you think my comment is silly.MARTIN you spelt you second name or where you come from wrong!

    ReplyDelete
  26. "IAGO ASPAS is highly rated" At 25 he's had one season in LA LIGA.He's hit a 10 goal or more season twice. No international caps of any level. This guy has just won the lottery signing for us.
NIALL O'REILLY I hope you everyone else is right and he turns out to be a superstar but I've seen us waste to much money on these sort of players in the recent past.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I cannot fathom why people diminish player because they play in lower league or in lesser club. Aspas has done well in spain for several seasons. and scored a shedload of goals in spanish secunda which is imo better league than championship! british fans would be delighted for Rhodes or Zaha ( latter will turn out rubbish for manU) .

we simply arent the club that has finances to pull out transfers for top names in football anymore. so we need to pull those who will be top names in season or two. Aspas is technical, very hard working! ( reminds me occasionally of Pavel Nedved due to his work rate, not his style) that liverpool fans will love. if we convert him to right winger, he is upgrade for downing. 13 goals for strugling club with handfull of assists. if he manages that next season with pool. im overjoyed.

atleast with him we would have skill - pace - workrate and trickery in right flank. instead of downing, diagonal runs with occasional cut in. (not taking anything away from downing, he has upped his game and has good workrate aswell. he is just a crappy player)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Judging him by the amount of caps he has is idiotic,Look at Pepe....He has like 20,the fact hes a keeper is irrelevant,Now I dont know the lad I dont watch la Liga but from what Ive hear hes rated highly I personally dont know...I hope you eat your words next year if he does prove himself

    ReplyDelete
  29. You must be GRAHAM HUNTER in disguise :-) I watch quite a bit football outside of the PL actually but not as much as I use to.What has the age of ASPAS when CELTA VIGO went down got to do with anything?
MICHU is not our player so I don't care how old he was.I'm not here for you to quiz me on the age of footballers!
So the logic is MICHU (a different player) scored more goals in ENGLAND than SPAIN and ASPAS has more in SPAIN than MICHU so IAGO ASPAS will succeed at LFC.Football doesn't work like that son!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I remember many years ago hearing LFC being linked with Sami Hyppia and everybody cried out Sami WHO? Looked how he turned out......... Became one of Liverpool's all time great defenders. Just goes to show that if you put your Faith in someone who shows promise then you can, reap the rewards from it without spending a fortune! As someone else mentioned look no further than the likes of Michu for the Swans........ Perfect example. Spending a fortune on world renowned players doesn't always pay off either look at Schevchenko when he went to Chelsea, he was nowhere near the same player he was at AC Milan and closer to home what about Torres!!!! Give Aspas the chance he deserves, I am excited to see him in the Liverpool shirt. As for Assaidi you can't judge him on a handful of appearances, 1 game here and another there is not a decent enough run of games for anyone to prove themselves...... Given a proper chance I back him to come good, look at Henderson much better with consistant run of games! YNWA

  31. REINA has 26 caps and many more at youth level. You just supported my comment despite it being idiotic.I can't think of many top quality players that have no caps at any level at the age of 25.It was just a observation!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I dont think anything about other fans, where did I say that, when it first broke, I said id judge him in a lfc shirt, which is what I think every fan should do regardless of who the player is, if you think my comment was ret5rded because you didn't understand it, well, thats just being as I said before "SILLY", by the way, I love the way you think you know what I think, bit of a god complex you have, thats what I think.

    ReplyDelete
  33. He is apparently known for his hard work ethic on the pitch, ability to get past player with a bit of skill or some pace. Worst case scenario he is a upgrade on Kuyt. Downing drains out of the game too many times and at times seems as though he is not on the pitch at all.

    ReplyDelete
  34. RUSSLFC you make some great points.SAMI HYYPIA turned up as a unknown but turned into one of the best players to ever play for us.
But my response to that is nearly 15 years on the scouting networks of every top club has moved up a level. The chances of us getting such talent and for nobody to have a clue who he is has been reduced dramatically.
That's not to say you can't pick up a bargain but people will know the player you sign most of the time.
ARSENE WENGER has found it hard to recapture his early trophy winning days and that's partly down to other teams having caught up with regards to scouting.
It's hard to give ASSAIDI a proper chance when the man that signed him doesn't play him.If he isn't good enough he should be sold.
It must be a crime not to be excited by a LFC signing.I thought their were better options available to us.However, IAGO ASPAS will get my full support next season and he'll hopefully contribute to a top 4 place.

Michu hasn't either yet he scored 16+ last year, also Aspas team only got promoted this season and he kept them up, international manager pick players from bigger teams and not little this is might be the problem why he hasn't had a call up.

    ReplyDelete
  36. No I think you're ret4rded because you make no sense. What are you talking about?

Looks like Rodgers might bring in a AM, he wants to add another 20 goals to our team and another two CBs are coming in too, hopefully papadopoulous and llori and if Suarez goes he wants either bentekke or benzema, both would be good signings in my opinion... :-)

    ReplyDelete
  38. We have to believe! he looks a very good player, even in the video i like the way he lifts the ball over the keeper instead of trying to smash it past him, a few more like him i.e. Alberto and a couple of quality defenders and we will surprise a few teams i'm sure, so lets see what happens in this window...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Seems like he's a bit of a late bloomer, but he had a great season helping his side get promoted to the top division and what he's done this past year is certainly an achievement. Celta only scored 37 goals in the season, so if Aspas was directly involved in 19 of those then it's an impressive stat. Similar to what Suarez did for us when Kenny was in charge. I guess there is some risk involved, you can simply never know how a player will work out, but I get the feeling that Rodgers has invested plenty of time in working out precisely what kind of assets his targets have and how they can contribute. This looks like a very clear and direct effort to sign a very specific player so I will defer to their judgement for now. Have to wait to actually see the guy in action before we can know for sure.

  40. Ricky Lambert? Gary Hooper? They're just two players who I personally would consider good players, not world beaters but good solid players none the less

    ReplyDelete
  41. We had the same discussions about Coutinho ,I recall. Why didn't we get Sneidjer? If he's that good , why are Inter selling him for £8m? etc etc etc
    Until we either:
    a) pay massive wages,
or b) join the CL sides,
we need to find potential gems . Maybe he is just that. He certainly seems more potent than Downing....

  44. You mean BP? Bob Paisley! Why he never got Knighted is beyond me!

    ReplyDelete
  45. But if you are a top player without a cap Spain is the country to miss out what a squad of players they have.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Looking for the right mentality is one thing but someone needs to remind him he's not at Swansea anymore. It's not like higher profile players with more experience, not talking about Aspas here, than 20 matches in a first team never have the right mentality.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yeah you are right BP and BS were greater than SAF imo. They did everything possible and made LFC what it is. For all what they both did for English football! As Matt Busby &
Alex Ferguson were given the "sir" title, and yet Bill Shankly & Bob
Paisley wasn't. British honors system remain a mystery for me.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think he did understand by the January this year that he was not at SFC but was at LFC and did work in that direction. IMO it will take a few more transfer windows for LFC to be a force. We should not be over-excited because it will take sometime for the team to gel in. If Luis Suarez goes(highly possible) then I think we need to get Luis Muriel because that guy has the potential and can be even better than him. It will always affect the team when Luis Suarez goes because he gives more than 100% to the team and that gives other players a boost in their morale on the pitch. But every time a hero leaves their is a new one ready to step up and take his place.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I don't want Tiote to play for LFC. Diame, yes ofc.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Well Suarez is not more likely to stay when we only sign players like Lori or Alberto. January was a good window but the two players signed then were far ahead careerwise compared to the likes of Lori and Alberto. I see no problem with signing young players, but they should have more experience at the highest level the way Sturridge and Coutinho did and Muriel does.

  52. i agree with you m8 it must be a crime not to get excited ,i fear a lot of posters have ejaculation problems ,as the amount of excitement gerarated by any player is comical, every signing we buy is going to bang in 20 goals lol

  53. as long as aspas makes a cross or pass that actually reaches someone ill be happy .....many a times downing has been caught making mindless crosses or pot shots at the goal .....main reason why i dont like him

  56. JASE, check out some of the abuse that's come my way for not falling in line and thinking IAGO ASPAS is a signing to get excited about.I think I had a narrow/lucky escape though. If it was down to some I would've been tortured then publicly beheaded for going against what the majority think :-)

    ReplyDelete
  57. I too belive there are better options out there but how about we give him a chance first before we judge. empty guns or loaded guns aside, what your saying is bull, but you strike me as someone who is never wrong, and there is no point asking someone a question when you dont want an answer, again SILLY.

    ReplyDelete
  58. tell me about it if you go against the majority you get caned i mite start seeing lfc through rose tinted glasses and getting over excited over average signings;-)

    ReplyDelete
  59. He either scored or created 51% of all Celta Vigo goals which is excellent when you consider they were so poor. Reserve judgement until we see him play in red.

    ReplyDelete
  60. MARTIN you're so angry with how i put things it has clouded your judgement. You agree there was better out there than IAGO ASPAS for us to sign, which was the whole point of my intial statement. So much for what I'm saying being bullsh5t.
The reason I don't want a answer from you is because you have a playground attitude that is more interested in arguing over ret4rded stuff.
I have better things to do than entertain your internet life with childish retorts back and forth for the foreseeable future.Grow up!

  63. Probably not! But I'm glad you made your feelings. Known!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Beast a lot of the things you say I actually agree with but what I'm trying and others are trying to do is get some belief back and get behind what seems to be a bright new start for the club. For to many years now we havn't been heading down the right road, we have been playing unattractive, unconsistant and mediocre football for sometime....... That coupled with the disaster of the previous owners and how they nearly crippled our club, something needed to be done. We got new owners who want to bring success back to LFC, they may want to go the long way about it but its the sensible way, besides what's the hurry we have been 20 years what's wrong with a couple more if it gets done the right way? We have a new guy in charge in BR and he stated right from the off that he wished to bring back the pass and move style of play to the club and the fight for the club and never give up mentality of the past. I have seen that begin to take shape already in the second half of last season....... We work harder as a team now, closing down players, desire to win the ball back and without doubt the most free flowing attractive football I have seen us play in years! So this is why so many people are getting excited m8 because what the club is doing is new and fresh and has a long term plan and that can only be a good thing as the club was beginning to stagnate and had no clear direction! We need to enjoy this change because I for one sure as hell don't want to go back to how we were! YNWA

You are coming across like a angry 12 yr old and its very hard to take anything you say with any seriousness.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Good comment RUSS but your preaching to the converted. My lack of enthusiasm over the signing of ASPAS doesn't mean i don't like the new direction we're taking.
I like BRENDAN ROGERS and FSG and back their long term project. But I don't give them blind support. If I think a players not to LFC's standard I will say even if I get a bunch of angry people wanting a pathetic war of words over something that's subjective.
Some of the football we played last year was fantastic and that style will only get better. The results we picked up in the second half of last season leaves me thinking we won't be too far away from a CL place.

    ReplyDelete
  67. ANTHONY COWAN, When we signed PHILIPPE COUTINHO we picked up a whizkid with a incredible amount of ability that played for a huge club in INTER MILAN and found opportunities to be limited.
They were so desperate to get their hands on PAULINHO we got a great deal and INTER had to settle for their second choice.COUTINHO had big game experience for someone so young and had world class potential.
IAGO ASPAS has come in with no caps not even at youth level, has very average stats and only played in LA LIGA for one season at the age of 25.If he's so good, when he was drowning in the SEGUNDA division why did no club from LA LIGA give him a life jacket?
I'm not like these other fans who have taken a interest in the player and seem to have followed his progress through SPAIN's lower division :-) I hope I'm wrong and he performs to a level that makes me eat my words as some angry LFC fan has already stated!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I agree with you.If all we do this summer is sign the likes of ASPAS then top 4 will be unrealistic. When you look at ARSENAL doing deals like GONZALO HIGUAIN albeit with CL to offer the gap will only increase.
The players you mentioned I want them all.But there seems to be a lot written/typed by newspapers and websites regarding those players but not much movement.SHAKHTAR DONETSK said they've heard a lot through media outlets but have had no contact with anyone from LFC.

  69. I do wonder if BR does want to sign Benteke, my brother thinks they would want 35mill but surely 25 mill would be enough. if not just look elsewhere. As for Papadopoulos I am reading in certain pieces that its off because they would be gambling with his fitness and I can understand this as our signings last year like Allen, Borini means we cant really be gambling . Last couple weeks I was very hopeful but now I am thinking No way are we going to make top 4.I always think we are going to do well and then get let down but the thing this time is the way the team played at the end of the season gave me some hope . I also think that maybe BR has to go for these players now as we simply aren't getting the funds that we used to get . Hopefully we get a couple of surprise positive signings to fire us into top 4.
