Wigan winger Callum McManaman put in an excellent performance in Wigan's FA Cup final win over Manchester City at the weekend, and with the Latics almost certain to be relegated this week, it seems likely that the 22-year old will be looking for another club this summer. Wigan Boss Roberto Martinez insists that the McManaman 'needs to play games in the Premier League', and former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp is certain the youngster will have plenty of potential suitors during the upcoming transfer window.
In his column for the Daily Mail yesterday, Redknapp enthused:
"Wigan are one result away from dropping out of the top flight, but we will remember them for their delightful football and for winning the FA Cup.
"Now there will be a stampede to their door for their explosive winger Callum McManaman. Gael Clichy and City had no idea how to stop him at Wembley"
McManaman's form has improved steadily throughout the season, and Martinez insists that he's destined to play for England. He told reporters:
"He [McManaman] has raw talent. You don’t get many players like him who are not over-coached and he is not in a system where we feel we have to tell him how to do things. He has natural talent. Callum is lucky. He needs to play games in the Premier League. England? I’m convinced he will get that".
I have no doubt that Liverpool will (inevitably) be linked with a move for McManaman during the summer transfer window:
* He's a scouser.
* He fits the profile of the kind of player FSG buy.
* LFC need more attacking options on the right-side of midfield.
There's also the novelty of having another right-sided 'McManaman' at Anfield (!)
Like his LFC namesake, Callum McManaman grew up as an Everton fan, though the fact he spent 9 nine years in Everton youth system may mean he has a preference for a move to Goodison Park.
He'd be decent competition - or even a viable replacement - for Stewart Downing. Worth a bid in the summer...?

Maybe we should buy him, hoping he'll turn out to be like the Leighton baines stroy.
ReplyDeleteWhilst he's undoubtedly not a bad player at 22 years of age if were going to replace downing we need someone better than him, and can we really say on the basis of his performances so far he's better than downing? No. Firstly he's only played a handful of games in the premier league, which is hardly enough to judge whether he's going to progress into a seriously talented player or not. In the game against city whilst he consistently managed to get past cliche his distribution was pretty poor so in that regard hes maybe not that much different than downing. True he has scored some goals in recent games, but downing was doing the same at aston villa. The main problem for me is that snapping up players that look alright at poor clubs isnt a good transfer policy, it didnt work with charlie adam, it hasnt worked with joe allen, henderson has hardly been a raving success either. Average players look good in poor teams and if were going to push for the top four we need better than average players.
ReplyDeleteAll depends on price.
ReplyDeleteIf it's on the cheap, it's low risk and we don't have to justify the purchase by playing him constantly (Joe Allen).
If it's expensive, we are setting ourselves up to fail.
If he doesn't go for more than 5 million sure. But I doubt that.Someone is bound to overpay for him. Good thing for us is that the likes of Citeh and Everton are now without a manager so this is the time to steal a march on them in transfer negotiations.
ReplyDeleteLooked good against City, maybe overcooked some of his wing play at times (just did it now against Arsenal) but still, City did not look comfortable against him. But early days, as I haven't really been that impressed with him in the few other Wigan games I've seen.
ReplyDeletehonestley we need experience internationals or young players playing at a higher level , too much experiment with theese types of players from bottom teams : allen, adam, koncheskey and even henderson and downing for a while , we need imeediate impact like coutinho and sturridge , every season is vital and we cannot wait a season .
ReplyDeleteben arfa would be a very skillul signing , only injuries will stop him.
plus we have raheem sterling who in my opinion is much better than this guy, sterling is an international who w have spent a lot on and we need to give him oppertuanities , if mcmannan came he would hurt sterings chances unless he came in for downing which would be very stupid as mc mannan has yet to prove that he is any where near as good.
ReplyDeletemy advice to mcmannaman would be to join a better club in midtable , i think he would suit steve clarks west brom or maybe swansea, newcastle or villa . he could play their for 2 seasons and prove himself then he would be good enough for clubs like arsernal, liverpool and spurs.
ReplyDeleteDepends on price. I was very impressed with how easily he destroyed Clichy. Clichy is quick and McManaman made him look like Mertesacker.
ReplyDeleteI'd fancy Maloney as a squad player if Wigan go down. I think he'd fit in well with our current team.
I feel like if we're going to buy someone who wouldn't straight-up replace Downing but instead compete with him, we'd be better off going for Ince.
Totally agree!!
ReplyDeleteCan't see him moving for less money than Tom Ince (a reported £6.5m), therefore i'll have Ince every time.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that when an English player plays well in one or two games all of the sudden they are or should be linked to LFC??? If we going to replace SD we should put someone better than SD and he is not! He is not going to play for top 6 team period!! LFC should not make that KK mistakes again!
ReplyDeleteTello
ReplyDeleteI would rather have Tello, Also does anyone think Suso will be a better option next year than he was this year?
ReplyDeleteYes, you are absolutely right! We had too many such cases to talk about.
ReplyDeleteIs he not an Evertonian, ???????
ReplyDeleteexperience is what we need this summer,if the rumoured players leave carra gone, possibly pepe and skertal we cannot replace them all with 20 year olds
ReplyDeleteSUSO should be happy with the games he got earlier on in the season.I'm surprised he hasn't played more games recently.A little run out at NEWCASTLE is all he's managed.
ReplyDeleteCOADY got 5 minutes at FULHAM and if you watch the u21's like me you will know that he isn't anywhere near LFC standard.TEIXEIRA who overshadows COADY on a regular basis deserved his place on the bench against FULHAM.
I hope BR doesn't give up on SUSO he's amongst the best technically that we have and if you want to replicate BARCELONA's style you need these type of players around.
I would play him more next year but I can see us loaning him out, which might be the best thing for his development.
Spot on!
ReplyDeleteThank you but we don't need another hendo in progress,to much frustration that we can't effort, against MC he was playing like a headless chicken and i haven't got a clue why people are saying he was so top top may be that's what the british standard of a xcel winger for them? Spare me.
ReplyDeleteMartinez might go onto manage Everton and take this guy with him. I don't think he is too good anyway.
ReplyDeleteI am 100% sure Skrtel and Coates will stay and we will sign one more youngster in Toby Alderweild/Douglas
ReplyDeleteCoady and Teixeira are two different types of players. One is playmaker another is defensive midfielder. How can one overshadow other? Apple with oranges stuff
ReplyDeleteWhy are you surprised? Check our transfer history
ReplyDeleteWe don't owe playing time to any player. Not Sterling, not Gerrard, not anyone. So if this guy is brought in and he plays ahead of Sterling because he's better than so be it. The only way to compete, the only way to win matches and titles is by putting achievements first and individuals second. If this guy plays ahead of Sterling and Raheem responds by putting his head down and working hard to displace him then fine, so be it. If he starts moaning and wants to leave, then fine too.
ReplyDeleteADORJAN plays more of the attacking playmaker role for the u21's.TEIXEIRA plays slightly deeper.
ReplyDeleteIt's possible to overshadow someone who plays a different role to you in the part of the field you operate. They are both midfielders, it's not like comparing a striker to a defender is it!
i think one will defo go if not both
ReplyDeletehendo as been one of our top 5 performers of the season lol
ReplyDeleteI think both will go and we'll sign one relatively established name in TOBY ALDERWEIRELD and a kid maybe that SPORTING LISBON defender to take their place.
ReplyDeleteCorrect. Seems slow, passing is not neat enough, no close control and runs into blind alleys like headless chicken. I can see the romance of scousers at Liverpool but not this one. This one just isn't good enough. Even Downing could do what he does.
ReplyDeletehahaha new Mcmanaman
ReplyDeleteagree but we will be so short of premier experience next year
ReplyDeleteClearly overrated British ...
ReplyDeleteI can't see us going for ASHLEY WILLIAMS because of his age.PL experience is good to have but quality should always be the most important thing.
ReplyDeleteWe've gone with PL experience in other positions in previous transfer windows and they've found it hard to adapt in their first season.
On the flip side COUTINHO has taken to the league like a duck to water.I'm not fussed what league they come from but whoever arrives should have character and quality.
i hope we do not go for williams lol no more of rodgers ex players will do me fine;-)
ReplyDeleteLFC wiil not going very to far if still using deadwood or only passenger to complete the team.He skill just a little bit good, not more than that.I'm very sick when look he failed to make good crossing, tackle, making many assist or score many goal. With 2 season (many appearence debut) but only score 5 goal.He is not the real winger or attacker.Everytimes he failed to be good partner with sterling, suso or enricque. What kind player we already sign?
ReplyDeleteMy big hopes is next season LFC can get sign 2 new centre back Stefan De Vrij and Toby Alderweireld or Mamadou Sakho with 2 new winger Christian Tello and Eriksen plus 1 more attacker player,Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Sell out Carroll,Downing,Borini,Spearing,Skrtel and Pacheco to add more budget chasing new players.
more worryingly we will sell our players like arsenal as well ,but at least we will balance the books ,i wonder how many league championships and european cups we would have if all our owners ,were more concerned will making profit
