In March, Reports in the UK claimed that Liverpool were considering a summer move for Real Madrid full-back Fabio Coentrao. Well, with the transfer window just around the corner, the Portuguese star has publicly criticised Madrid, and made it clear that he'd consider a move away from the Bernebeau. With Liverpool seemingly in the market for both left and right backs, is Coentrao an option worth considering?
In an interview last night, 25-year old Coentrao revealed his frustration over the treatment he'd received at Madrid. He told O Jogo:
"From the first day I do not think I was wanted here. Today it seems that everyone wants me to leave the club. I do not know what I have done wrong.
"We must find a solution that is good for both the club and myself, so that no one will lose out. If I leave Real Madrid, I do not close the door to anyone"
Liverpool have been linked with Coentrao several times in the past:
* October 2010: Portuguese newspaper Jornal Record reports that Roy Hodgson is monitoring Coentrao, with a view to a possible January transfer.
* April 2011: The Daily Mail reports that Kenny Dalglish also wants the Portuguese international.
* May 2011: Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha claims that Liverpool have agreed a fee of £25m for Coentrao.
Prior to his move to Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid star Silvio predicted that Coentrao would become the best left-back in the world. he enthused:
"He is a spectacular player. He is the best left-back in Portugal and he will surely be the best one in the world. He will wind up being considered the best player in his position for many years"
Has Coentrao lived up to that billing? He's a solid player for Madrid, but he's also received a lot of criticism for the quality of his performances over the last year.
In January, Spanish newspaper AS claimed that Madrid boss Jose Mourinho was planning to sell Coentrao, having grown tired of his disruptive influence, which includes the following:
* November 2011 - An hour late for training (repeat offender)
* January 2012 - Arrived out of shape after Christmas break. Dropped by Mourinho.
* March 2012 - Caught smoking. Fined and left out of the squad for Villarreal.
* July 2012 - Reputedly a 'bad influence' during Madrid's summer tour of the USA.
* August 2012 - 4 games ban for calling the referee a 'bastard'.
* January 2013 - Massively late for training again.
In February, Spanish newspaper Marca - basically the media mouthpiece for Real Madrid - echoed AS's report:
"José Mourinho is at his wit's end with Fabio Coentrao, whose form has been a far cry from what is expected of a Real Madrid player. [Against Granada], Mourinho was forced to correct [Coentrao's] positioning and yelled instructions from the sidelines with the aim of sparking an improvement. Alas, it was not to be"
Coentrao - who cost Madrid £26m in 2011 - sounds like a bit of a nightmare to manage, but his talent cannot be denied. Would Liverpool be able to afford him though? Would he consider coming to Anfield? Do Liverpool even need him?

A full back should never be one of the most expensive players in your team as far as I'm concerned.
ReplyDeleteIt's why I was never behind the big money signing of Johnson, irrespective of his reputation as an attacking fullback while we had such holes further upfield, and would likewise be opposed to the signing of Contreao.
no leave him were he is, and lets go for raul albiol - who has no playing time and is undoubted a wonderful player!
ReplyDeletePlus we need a quality sub, not someone who would demand first team spot...
ReplyDeleteWith new manager and the pressure to win everything they will probably bring one or two world class attackers. Maybe Benzema or Higuain will be available...
ReplyDeleteif so, do you think they would join us?
ReplyDeleteplayers like these want Champions league action, we cant offer that, for sure..
Just yesterday I agreed with Vyas that it is all about money actually... and playing it does not mean wining it, they would know. plus with either of them we would be in cl next year and he could become a hero... Just a good presentation from our negotiating team...
ReplyDeleteCould you explain DerBaumMAnn, and tell where are you from
ReplyDeletei feel enrique is good for us, keep the $ spend elsewhere
ReplyDeletesome news said Madrid want our Luis Cannibal. Might be player + cash (possible)
ReplyDeleteHe aint leaving...
ReplyDeleteAre you JK in disguise. LS is not going so get that idea out of your head. Contreao is rubbish and worse than Skrtel.
ReplyDeletelearn to read..least from origin msg. I didnt want madrid dumpster as well
ReplyDeletei agree, at full we need to build depth (mainly on the left) rather than find people to start, especially with the limited budget we have.
ReplyDeletePlus I really believe Flanaghan and Robinson will become very good players if managed properly and avoid injuries..
ReplyDeleteI love the thorough nature of these posts.all the facts laid bare.
ReplyDeleteHe is some player and a certain upgrade on Jose and downing
Which would be shock to most 23 mil would be better spend buying two world class defenders or a world class midfielder like Isco to be gerrard replacement for future . Or Lukaku for 20mil or Damiao just cant see us doing this kind of spending on right back .And dont think we should .
ReplyDeleteLijevi bek, ali svakako si u pravu...
ReplyDeleteThats true, i have a little bit more faith in wisdom than flanagan but Robinson apparently played quite well for wolves when on loan so i hope he gets a serious look in the off season.
ReplyDeleteAlso McLaughlin impresses me but i dont wanna get too ahead of myself lol
Why the need to call him cannibal?
ReplyDeleteDa i ja mislim
ReplyDeleteAnd when I first saw Kelly I thought I am watching our next captain... Future looks bright, but the next season will be crucial in so many ways.
ReplyDeleteNot bad, bud he would need a year in the championship- running 5 km per game in Croatian league is not enough. Unless you are Luka Modric...
ReplyDeleteDon't think it's a matter of affording him,i don't believe for a moment Rodgers would want him. We're obviously looking at centre backs, not him.
ReplyDeletethere is no way in this world fsg would sancation that kind of money for a defender, infact i do not think they will sanction that kind of money on one player again full stop ,so much for the we can compete for any player in the world boast
ReplyDeletevery young... doubt Mamic will let him go easily if he is as you say..
ReplyDeletehim and halilovic are good thats why arsenal scouts go to maksimir ?
ReplyDeleteArsenal are always finding that type of players...
ReplyDeletewell lets hope liverpool do same
ReplyDeleteBloody question Mark ?
ReplyDeletewell im from a country in which skiing is more popular than playing football ;)
Nope hes a headcase and just a plain nightmare,we dont need them type of players. If he could sort himself out he could be a real good player but I doubt it
ReplyDeleteAustria maybe. Can not type the question mark, it is so irritating...
ReplyDeleteWe would be wasting our money here and he will demand massive wages.
ReplyDeleteCoentrao is not worth it. There are far better options available. We can sign 2 top defenders for that amount of cash.
nice guess ;). you should really send me a screen shot lol
ReplyDeleteby the way, benzema and higuain would be two wonderfull players to have, but i just cant see them moving to a club like us, IMO its just as unlikely as Tevez and Mascherano both rejoining WestHam
our great club that will be fighting for the title next season. and we only need one...
ReplyDeletehaha, just read that news that real is offering us money plus player deal for Suarez. players involved are Lopez, Di Maria, and guess which other two players...
ReplyDeleteWorth a try if not a penny more than 5 mil pounds. Hope FSG is clever enough not to make him the most expensive defender in history after some painful lessons in the transfer market for the past 2 seasons.
ReplyDeleteHahah :) we ll see wether its a rumor or not ...
ReplyDeleteI personally would sell Suarez anyday if the price is right...
Alaba is the best left back in the world in my honest opinion. He would cost less than coentrao too.
ReplyDeleteJust wondering if we have the capacity to sign any of these 2 players, Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Tiago Ilori. Or are we going to play the same game of taking our own sweet time?
ReplyDeleteNo he would never leave Bayern for us, and Bayern would never let him go... You should stop dreaming ;)
ReplyDeleteNO Coentrao is trouble which is why Madrid want rid
ReplyDeleteLucas Digne should be enough fornnext season as a cover for jose
ReplyDeleteA little off topic JK,sorry, but i was wondering if it would be possible to maybe, forget about all the speculating and number crunching for just a bit,and run a thread devoted to short stories, anacdotes, and jokes from LFC fans esp kopites.
ReplyDeletethey would if we sold suarez for upwards 50m .....
ReplyDeletewe already are for erriksen
ReplyDeletei do believe they would spend big then either
ReplyDeleteSeems like too much of a handful.
ReplyDeleteThat said, Mourinho can bring out the worst in anyone, so you can be completely sure he is a bad egg.
Because they've been burnt before, Carroll-35 million downing-20 million that's why there being cautious about there money, also we need more than one or two players, in the future when our team settled then we can spend big on players again. :-)
ReplyDeletethe thing is m8 its not there money its the clubs money but they want it for themselves
ReplyDeleteThey own the club so technically it's there's. if they give us 30 million then should be enough plus player sales then we can rebuild.
ReplyDeleteAnd in fairness we could have signed a right back of the same quality as Johnson for less than half the money we paid. I wonder how often Suarez has been late for training by the way...
ReplyDeleteHow so? I'd like to think that when we bring in another left back that he would be better than Enrique who is inconsistent to say the least..
ReplyDeleteFor Kelly, I hope he can get over his injury demons but I fear for him. Flanno and Robinson are good kids but I can't see it happening personally. Ryan Mac is already better than Flanno let alone the competition from abroad and Robinson hasn't impressed me when he's played. That said he's only young sure so he deserves a couple more chances imo. If he can keep his big yap shut and listens and learns from the experienced professionals.
ReplyDeletei would be surprised if this happened too expensive, too much trouble, and we need the money for other positions, so won't happen.....
ReplyDeletebut i do hope they turn a blind eye and give money for one big name defender whether papa or whoever it will show that they are indeed going for the kill next season
ReplyDeletethey give us nothing we earn the money not them
ReplyDeleteFair point, but they brought for club for 300 million also wiped abit of the debt was around 250 million.... So put in 550 million to buy the club, every business men needs a return on a business....
ReplyDeleteTrue, but still he's rated less than coentrao in world football and i guarantee he'd cost less.
ReplyDeleteI guarantee he isnt available. People would have to make an extraordinary bid for him, not for less than 35m ... He's 21 and probably the best left back on earth ...
ReplyDeleteHe was not consistent all season, but... Injurie and new manager worked against him in the first half. second he played much better and with all summer to prepare combined with his growing experience- I see him as a starter for at least 3-4 seasons...
ReplyDeleteYes injuries, but great potential...
ReplyDeleteDo not know who is Ryan Mac but hope you are right...
65 mill and I agree. no wait- 80 mill. ok, round it up...
