'He's like Nasri - LFC make €15m offer for exciting star who's 'worth €37m'

Liverpool have reportedly put in an offer for Lyon attacking midfielder Clement Grenier, who is also on Arsenal's transfer wish-list this summer.

According to French newspaper L'Equipe:

"Liverpool have made a firm offer for Grenier.

"The club is negotiating with Lyon over the 15 million transfer fee for the French international"

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas recently claimed that Grenier is 'worth €37m' (!), and when asked about the 22-year old's future this week, he told OL TV:

"I've not had an offer from another club. He [Grenier] has got a year left on his contract, and we're going to do everything we can to keep the golden generation of players at Lyon. The strategy is to build around the youngsters. It's a strategy that's working."

In an interview with L'Equipe on Monday, Lyon coach Remi Garde also made it clear that he wants to keep hold of Grenier:

"He [Grenier] has won over everyone. He's done what was necessary to be at the heart of our project for years to come. We're going to do everything to keep him."

Speaking to RTL this week, Grenier insisted that he 'knows' what he wants, but refused to talk further about his plans for the future. he did, however, reveal that he'd had a meeting with Garde:

"I met with the coach. It's going to stay between us for the moment. No-one knows the future of a player. If I knew whether I should stay or leave to play at the World Cup, I'd still keep it private. The World Cup is still a year away. There are quite a few games to be played before that, a whole season."

Grenier has been called into the France squad for their upcoming South American tour, and he's clearly got his eye on making the World Cup squad next year. To do that, he'll need to play regular first-team football, and with 33 appearances (24 starts) for Lyon last season, it looks like he's doing that in France.

Would he play more often if he came to Anfield? At first glance, it seems doubtful; however, as a right-sided attacking midfielder, Grenier's only real competition would be Stewart Downing, so there's definitely scope to make the position his own. Just look at Coutinho - he's a first-team regular already and he's two-years younger than Grenier.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger recently admitted that the Gunners are tracking Grenier. He told French programme Telefoot:

"We are following him. His intelligence of play pleases me. He has interesting qualities. He's like Nasri"

An exciting option...?

  1. If he's anything like Nasri, we'd do well to stay clear.

  2. It would be insane to pay 15m for him. He was bit time player at OL, and is hardly any more impressive than a Jordan Henderson or Jonjo Shelvey. He is also not suited to play on the wing, as you suggest. He is central midfielder.

if too much new in single transfer window can we cope up? can we gel up in short time? But i support revolution...

some news said Madrid offer 25m + a player Callejon, what u guys think on this???

  4. Could be good, but 15 million sounds like quite a lot, especially if he only has 1 year left.
But as he is French if he comes to the PL, he will go to Newcastle :-P

  5. I'd take 35m and someone and maybe someone with a little more establishment at Real, Callejon is an option but I'd like to take one of their first team regulars - Ozil, Modric, Benezema - doubt any of those would come though with no Champions League.

  6. Another rumour had 25 mill Morata and Jese Rodriguez i would rather take that both would be very good.
But i would prefer 50 mill cash though.

  8. Well who for forty will replace him.
Also on topic seen Grenier play a few times after a friend told me he could be a target for Liverpool and may i say he is not worth 15 mill even.

  9. Especially not on a £35m plus player deal, since they are all better than him anyway

  10. lol if hes like Nasri and joins Arsenal he'll be bought by a bigger club and win silverware with them :D

  11. Callejon is not exactly an upgrade of what we already have. They try to offload their dead-wood, just like Antonio Nunez.

  12. Torres wasn't worth 50m, either. And Luis Suaréz is better than him.

Sell Suarez but for a high fee40 million plus, then get Muriel for 15 million, similar to Suarez :-)

  14. 15mn for him or 13mn for Eriksen? Also, Assaidi rejected Ajax for Liverpool. We can further reduce 13mn by putting Assaidi in the trade. I think BR is not a big fan of Eriksen. Eriksen on other hand has given enough hints that he wants to play for Liverpool.

  15. Yes spot on and Napoli are asking 52 mill for Cavani so why not

  16. Erikson is a walking advertising board for himself if he is as good at football as talking about himself he will be the next Zidane.

  17. o player is worth 50 million but going by prices paid for players before hes worth every penny of 50 million

  18. i think we get a nose bleed if a club wants over ten million

  19. Pity about the new stadium handicapping them financially, as would like to see them putting up a better fight next season against PSG and new boys Monaco (I don't see them getting banned). Good to see competition but nice to see a mix, instead of only oil boys dominating the top.

  20. I'd take £35m + Higuain/Benzema - pushing it I know - but if theres no buyout clause then I say lets drain them for every penny - dont think I can bare a similar Owen fiasco.

  21. Exactly - Is Ronaldo twice as good as Suarez?! They paid £80m for him so I'd say £50m should be the lowest acceptable offer to FSG

  22. Please god not another nunez - feck me I still have nightmares about that waste of space - just checked wikipedia - He only started 1 game for Madrid and as a midfielder he manageda paltry 9 league goals in his CAREER with 2/3rds scored in the Spanish 2nd div!!

They paid us £8m for Owen so total fee £8.25m at best.

    Teefing bastards!!

  23. im envious on liuge 1 palyers diouf , cheyrou etc
i think if we sell suarez for 40m we sign
    jovetic 25m , eriksen 15m
then if skrtel 12 and reina 10m leave
    we sign
    papdoplous 12m and begovic 10m
that would be enough to get us to top 5 without spending anything

  24. Midfielders again? It's like Kenny is back. He's a good signing if you can get him, yes. But we really need to replace our defenders. Toure isn't that good that he will make that big of a difference by himself.

  25. My view. Keep Stevie G., Coutinho, Sturridge, and Pepe R. after that, if you can upgrade them all, why not? Make them all take the pre-season tour to gel, then look for it to happen about 3 games into the season.

  26. This guy is hugely talented. Reads play wonderfully, has a great passing range and his free-kicks are unstoppable. Anyone following French Ligue 1 knows that he is a special talent. Come one LFC, sign him. Lyon need money badly and the player has just one year left, so he is up for grabs.

  27. Excellent idea. Muriel is fantastic.
