'It doesn't help' - Angry boss blasts 'erroneous' £15m LFC transfer deal. Game over...?

In April, Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic admitted that he is 'happy' to be linked with a summer transfer to Liverpool, and with Pepe Reina continuing to be linked with a move to Barcelona, the Reds are planning for life without the Spanish stopper. Earlier this week, Begovic seemingly gave the strongest indication yet that he could become the club's new goalkeeper, but Stoke City have hit back today, claiming that reports of an imminent move are very wide of the mark.

According to a report in The Mirror over the weekend:

"Brendan Rodgers will try to jump the queue for Asmir Begovic, if Pepe Reina rejoins Barcelona".

Speaking to the Bosnian media this week, Begovic made it clear that he wants to join the Reds. He told reporters:

"I want to start preparing on July 10, with all the players of Liverpool”

According to Stoke, the story is not true. Potters chief executive Tony Scholes told Sky Sports today:

"Asmir's agent rang me as soon as these stories surfaced. He assures me that Asmir doesn't know the Bosnian journalist and has certainly never spoken to him.

"It's complete fabrication. It's inevitable when a manager parts company with a club that there's a period of uncertainty and erroneous newspaper reports certainly don't help matters."

Believe that, and you'll believe anything. Stoke is a good club, but why would Begovic want to stay with a managerless team that narrowly avoided relegation last season? Scholes probably saw the quotes, chewed out Begovic, and is now trying to control the situation.

I personally find it amusing how often players are allegedly 'misquoted' and/or deny taking part in ill-advised interviews about their futures.

A similar thing happened recently with Daniel Agger, who admitted in a Danish interview that he'd considered quitting Anfield 'several times' due to injury, and suggested that he didn't have 'much time left' at LFC.

A couple of days later, Agger (predictably) claimed he'd been 'misquoted', even though his comments were very far from controversial.

Begovic cost Stoke £3.5m in 2010, and he's now rated in the £15m bracket, which is (IMO) slightly overpriced.

I don't think we've heard the last of the Begovic story...

  1. I do get when people say that they were misquoted or mistranslated because lets face it sometimes mistakes happen and sometimes the media like the take specific parts of quotes to make a story more interesting but how does saying "I want to start preparing on July 10, with all the players of Liverpool” get misquoted? lol maybe the John Terry defense "I said it sarcastically".
Also if they are claiming that this was an actual quote from an interview which begovic denies ever took place wouldnt he have some legal case here for discrimination or something? (im not a law professor, i just like TV lol)

  2. It does not help the situation when we have so called LFC supporters Like Jaimie Kanwar, (who has his own agenda regarding Reina and Suarez) perpetuating these Daily Mirror fabrications.

We are looking for another Keeper but only to replace the unfortunate Doni (May he Never Walk Alone). Rodgers has apparently got £20M in his war chest and the Begovic would apparently cost £15M, we need 2 defenders, a couple of decent midfielders and another forward. So with £5M left and £15M for carroll (by no means certain) the figures just don't stack up.

  5. If ASMIR BEGOVIC does come and there's a fight or something in the dressing room next season and it gets leaked to the press. We'll know where to look.REINA's situation has to be sorted out before we make BEGOVIC or any other keeper deal public knowledge. He should keep his trap shut until the deal is done and dusted and we see that SKYSPORTS yellow strap BREAKING NEWS.......

  6. For someone who is in the media I find your comment staggering. As you know the 'jounalist' will be paid for the 'story'. He knows nothing will happen for making it up and is making a quick buck. You can't honestly believe that at half the stories printed are 100% totally fabricated.

  9. Because Liddypool - you aren't a big Club & if Bego want's to move - he will move for silverware - which you can not in any way guarantee.

    Simples innit?

  10. I checked out the comment attributed to Bego by taking the English, translating it back to Bosnian - finding the 'journalist' who created it - do it yourself & find out what a streak of shite it transpires to be.

  12. Right, so the Stoke manager is lying directly to the press, but the un-named Bosnian reporter is the shining light of truth in all of this. Are you for real? You just want to believe this story because it lines up all the other assertions you're trying to make about Reina leaving. The European football media is a circus, anyone with half a brain can see this. You might as well be reading a football version of People magazine.

I don't think Liverpool are a long way from it. Second half of the season form puts us in 4th or very near to it and this is in a season where we, or at least I, never expected us to get close. New manager with a new philosophy is always going to take time to gel and its promising to see that its starting to happen. The 3 highest placed teams this season (Man U, Man City and Chelsea) all are going to have new managers next year so who knows whats going to happen there. They could very well take a season or two to find some rhythm again and I think next year will be an interesting and closer race for the title and CL places. If Mourinho goes to Chelsea I think they will win the title but Moyes at Man U doesnt sound like instant success to me. Liverpool are in with a shot.
