Reds eye £10m 'Talent of the Year' who prefers LFC move. £30m double-swoop...?

Liverpool kept a clean sheet today against West Ham, but defensive restructuring is almost certainly on the way this summer, and Ajax's Toby Alderweireld is the latest central defender to be linked with a summer move to Anfield.

According to a report in Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf:

"Liverpool are interested in Ajax star Toby Alderweireld.

"The defender has a preference for Liverpool, but his options are open"

Liverpool allegedly have 'an edge over the competition', and if a deal goes through, £10m-rated Alderweireld would become the first Belgian to play for the Reds.

In November, Ajax manager Frank de Boer hinted that the 24-year old could leave in the summer. He told reporters:

"That [a transfer] is maybe something for next year. I think he'll end this season at Ajax".

When asked about his future in December, Alderweireld made it clear that a move to one of the Premier League's London clubs would be right up his street. He told Dutch broadcasting channel AT5:

“Ajax is a very nice club. It won't be hard to play here all my life - but if I had to choose it have to be a nice club like Ajax again and there aren't many of them. But a club such as Arsenal or Tottenham. They are fantastic clubs and would be a step forward.”

In an interview with De Telegraaf last week, Ajax director of football Marc Overmars confirmed that Liverpool scouts are 'often present' at the Amsterdam Arena, so it's conceivable that Alderweireld may be on the scouting list.

With the Reds rumoured to be chasing £20m-rated Christian Eriksen too, perhaps a £30m double-swoop is on the cards this summer?

In 2010 - whilst Luis Suarez was still at Ajax - Alderweireld won the Ajaz 'talent of the year award'. Worth a bid in the summer, or are the likes of Williams, DeVries, Sakho et al better options...?

  10. Indeed, I live in Belgium, seen him play for the national team loads of times and he's the weakest link in that team. Not good enough for a team that want's to be top in europe once again.

  11. He's not nearly as good as Jan Vertongen, I would welcome Jan at Liverpool any day. But I hope they don't buy Toby, he's not good enough for Liverpool.

  13. I'm Belgian and I really don't rate him. I would go for Kouyate from Anderlecht rated only 8m.€ instead of Alderweireld at 10m.£ Problem here is that Arsenal are going to get him.

  27. Strange we have these defensive problems when our back four looks decent on paper and individually Johnson , Enrique , Carra and Agger are good players , then we have a dedicated defensive midfield player who adds very little going forward , and is not adding anything to the back four . So why play him ? Surely Coutinho Gerrard Henderson Downing or Sterling , then Sturridge and Suarez upfront would be a much better bet , don't want to mention the players name , but why is he always in the team ?

  28. Hey Greg wtsup ya it might be true that he wil replace skirtel in the summer, but i wud like us to have williams from swansea his positioning, physical presence and he organises the defence just like Carra, skirtel has costed us so many points this season e.g the poor back pass against Man City which Tevez scored and the misjudgement with Reina against City

  32. spot onnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!! certainly playing him in the starting xi next season won't help us if we have the ambitious to qualify for champions league next season!..he is nowhere near his best.he adds nothing to team..i don't hear to say he is poor but not deserved to play for liverpool as we are desperate for those glory years bac at anfield...frustrarted

  33. Cliff doesnt he normally play as a right back for Belgium and he may look a lot better if played at C.B.
