LFC predicted line-up vs Spurs: Can the Reds pull off another Man United...?

Liverpool face Spurs at Anfield today in a game that could conceivably legitimise the club's progress under Brendan Rodgers. A win for the Reds would emphatically underline that the team is heading in the right direction, and given recent form, a victory against Andre Villas Boas' side is definitely achievable.

Rodgers confirmed on Friday that:

* Martin Skrtel has recovered from his injury.

* Daniel Sturridge is fit and available.

* The club has no new current injury worries.

Given the pace in Spurs team, specifically the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon, it wouldn't surprise me if Skrtel came back into the team at the expense of Jamie Carragher. Pace is not Carra's strong point, and although the Slovakian is error-prone, he has that extra yard of pace that may come in hand against Spurs' speedy front line.

It's also probable that Rodgers will go for experience today, which may mean Coutinho misses out in favour of either Joe Allen or Jordan Henderson. For me, that would be overly negative, so hopefully that won't happen. I think we'll see the following line-up:

---------------- Reina

Johnson --- Agger ---- Skrtel ---- Enrique

--------------- Lucas

-------- Gerrard -- Coutinho

Downing ----------------- Suarez

-------------- Sturridge

At a similar point in the 2008-9 season, Liverpool hammered Manchester United 4-1 in the league, and put down a real marker for the title. The confidence from that victory propelled the club forward over the rest of the season, and I see today's game as very similar in that a good victory could provide the confidence and momentum to push the club into Champions League contention.

Rather surprisingly, Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson predicts a 201 victory for the Reds. He told the BBC:

"Spurs are due a bad result and I feel they will lose at Anfield on Sunday. Brendan Rodgers's side will have to try to diminish the threat of with Gareth Bale, who has scored 11 goals in his last nine games for club and country. The way round that problem is simply by sticking close to him"

Let's hope he's right!

  1. Phillipe will be in the front three so expect Henderson or Allen with Gerrard  and Lucus

  2. thats a decent line up.....we may as well be attack minded as fortune favors the brave and we have nothing to lose..i would have gone a step further and played hendo for lucas..and really gone for it

  3. That is a scarily good looking team we have. I'm guessing Bale is gonna score so I'm glad we have an attack that is capable of scoring because it may be one of those games where the most firepower wins it for their team. Thank god Lennon is out his pace is too much to handle!

  5. As much as this would be a great line-up i feel Brendan will try and nulify the threat of spurs wingplay which is why i expect Henderson and downing to start with suarez playing in the space vacated by sturidge!

  6. Lawrenson thinks we will win? That's a bad omen.

  7. I'd take 201 - 0 with everyone other than Suarez scoring 6 hat-tricks each... Obviously Suarez will get 7 hat-tricks! ;)

  10. i like your line up. i still have a problem when seeing downings name on the team sheet though.
If we could add genuine world class to downings position, i think we'd be a lot healthier.
who would be ideal for that position and may be available?

  11. I think we'll pull this off today. Spurs had a good result midweek but Inter were no better than the Swansea & Wigan teams we put 9 past: they really were awful. I also don't think Spurs are stong enough at the back to deal with Suarez, Sturridge & Coutinho and Lucas & Gerrard will boss the midfield. Bale's going to have his customary pops at goal from everywhere so let's hope Reina is in the kind of form he was last weekend.

I'm going for 3-0 again (again as it was my prediction for the Wigan game.

  19. Truly world class players are rarely to be found in teams without CL football. I'd be happy if we simply upgraded from the average Downing to someone who's very good.
