Replacements? LFC scout Bundesliga duo as £15m LFC star nears Anfield exit

Yet another mistake from Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina cost the Reds three points against Manchester City on Sunday, and with the club actively seeking out replacements, it's looking increasingly like this could be the Spaniard's final season at Anfield.

Speculation over £15m-rated Reina's future has intensified over the last six months, and according to the Daily Mail today, Asmir Begovic's situation at Stoke is 'under close review', but the Reds the Reds are also pursuing two other goalkeepers:

"With Manchester United in pole position for the Stoke No 1, the net has been cast further afield.

"Form reports [have been] ordered on Borussia Moenchengladbach’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Hannover’s Ron-Robert Zieler"

Marc-Andre ter Stegen seems to be a preferred choice amongst quite a few LFC fans, and the club has been linked with the Borussia Monchengladbach 'keeper several times in the past. In September, The Mirror reported that Liverpool coach Brendan Rodgers had 'compiled a dossier' on the 20-year old stopper, who missed out on Germany’s Euro 2012 squad by the narrowest of margins.

Bayern Munich legend Sepp Maier is convinced that Stegen is Germany's future, and in an interview with German newspaper Bild in January, he hailed the Keeper's ability:

"Marc is virtually on par with Manuel Neuer. Neuer has just preceded him, he plays for Bayern and can distinguish himself internationally. [Ter Stegen] is now a great goalkeeper."

Zieler - who came through the youth ranks at Manchester United - has also been linked with Liverpool in the past, and according to Germany manager Joachim Loew:

"The Hannover goalkeeper [Ron-Robert Zieler] is great, he's really good and has a lot of class,"

In an interview last year, German national team coach Andreas Keopke hailed Zieler and Stegen. he told Bild:

"They have great serenity, and they've played outstanding this season with some great performances"

Liverpool could certainly do with some good old German efficiency in the team, and along with Stegen or Zieler, a bid for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels - who recently admitted that he's 'keen on a transfer' - would also be very welcome.

  2. jaimie can we afford these players and would they join a club in transition, instead of a club in the champions league

  3. I have to be honest i dont watch a lot of european football these days to rate these keepers and i wont jump on the youtube bandwagon and say they're great because of a video of highlights so i cant comment. But i certainly think Pepes standards have slipped. He's a record breaker so deserves far more respect then a 'f-off Pepe' and 'Reina is crap', but i definitely think he has become stale and i dont think he looks too happy these days. We need a top class young keeper who can be moulded to the new Liverpool/Brendan Rogers way. I think Jack Butland was a quality bargain buy and am gutted we never bought him. We definitely need a top keeper to challenge Pepe or replace him. I doubt he will be with us next season.

  4. There are worse places to look for a new keeper than Germany. Many worse places. Actually, most places are worse when it comes to keepers. I don't know how they do it.
    Ter Stegen? Yes please.
    Hummels? Very unlikely to happen.

In other news, and this might be interesting for us as Luis Suarez has been linked with them: Bayern about to sign Lewandowski. They already have Gomez and, what's his name, Mandzuzic or something like that, so it's unlikely that they will go for Suarez, too (unless they want to replace Robben).

  5. He 20 so yeah we can afford him....

  6. Looks class, yes please! Sell pepe to barca 10-15 million bid for this guy. And buy a number 2 aswell.

  7. hazzard and other good players are 20ish dose not mean we can afford them or they would come

  8. Hazard cost 38 million, this guy will come for 10-18 million which we can afford.

  9. For me he's way better than de gea. He's able judge when to turn the ball behind the post and when to punch the ball away from danger area(might i add he seems to have really strong arms).
As with any young GK he makes some baffling decisions(but not as bad as reina this weekend, it just keeps on flashing).

  10. Ter Stegen looks the one for me. The problem is though, there is so much inexperience (and a general lack of savvy) in team already, I worry about the effect of bringing in a 20-year old to fill one of the positions that requires most leadership and responsibility.

If we go for Ter Stegen, we should look for a Doni-type- someone who is experienced and can handle the pressure, but would be willing to be no.2.

  11. i think you will find 18 million will represent a huge signing to fsg from now on

  12. They paid 15 million for Allen? How another 3 million going to make a difference?

  13. Generally, I'm never all that sure with keepers but I'm always cautious about young keepers and whether they would be good in the short term, let alone the long term. Yep, of course, there are examples in history where young keepers in the ground running but not many.  I don't want a keeper that is learning on the job, I want a keeper that is ready and rarely a young keeper is that ready. Regardless of how good they look in their respective leagues, it is a big learning curve for young keepers coming to PL. Goalkeeper is the one position where I am reluctant to push for a young keeper. Ter Stegen does look good, De Gea looked good at Atleti and both may well be a terrific keepers in the long term but I'm not keen on the idea of having a puppy learning new tricks in goal as a no.1 keeper. I want stability at the back. Faff around elsewhere on the pitch but not in goal, not for me. For me, experience is key in goal. Would rather we went for Begovic but if he is courting CL clubs, than we have very little chance. Would have gone for Adler when he was on a free, last summer and seems to be playing well this season.

  14. You can't really say that when only last month they spent 20+ million on two players.... And today another player said we tried to sign him.... In the summer the purse strings will be loosen more...

  15. I really like the opening paragraph...."with the Club ACTIVELY seeking a replacement".... made me smile that bit.....the transfer window has just slammed shut and "we" are now actively seeking a new keeper after Pepe Reina cost us another 3 points....

Erm...forgive me for thinking that its just a tad late in the day.....let me be clear about this, Reina has been costing us points since Rafa left....he himself has spoken in his biography of how unhappy he was with things at the Club....

Why has it taken this long to deal with this issue? Why have we just let another window close after he has started repeating his questionable form....the same form that cost Kenny AND Roy points....

The WORST aspect of all this is that "we" havn't even got a decent alternative as back up....., didn't think "we" needed one, its just a freaking joke of gigantic proportions & the joke's on us.....whilst Reina can come out and say we can't compete....., is he having a laugh???

Seriously? Its just not acceptable for a Club of this stature to have to rely on 1 dodgy keeper for a whole season WITHOUT doing feck all about it, meanwhile he will continue to cost us points.....

But, i guess at least we are now "actively" looking for a replacement....

    * shakes head in disbelief *

  16. Ter Stegen looks the biz, he's got a high cross collection percentage, he's also very commanding in his box for someone of such tender years. Look very agile, don't know of his ball playing capabilities on the floor (passing is requirement of all players now). We should snap him up now before the vultures start circulating and drive his value up (Wish Ian Arye     would pull his finger out, when dealing). Seem the best suited considering  the bombardment of cross we receive, due to space our full backs leave. For a number #2 see if we could get Brad Friedel or Dorus de Vries.

  18. Pepe has been a great servant to Liverpool, one of the finest keepers I've seen in a Liverpool shirt but, in the last two seasons he has made very poor errors which are costing Liverpool valuable points. Maybe it's because he's getting older or because his heart isn't in it anymore but he's becoming a liability to our chances of getting back into the Champions League. These latest comments seem to me that he's not taking responsibility for his own poor form and suggesting that other players are not good enough. Maybe I'm wrong but either way I think this should be his last season at Liverpool. Ter Stegen in the few games I've seen him looks very good and I would be happy if he was Reina's replacement. As for Hummels, that guy is top class and in my opinion the best Cb in the world right now. Sadly though I don't see him coming to Liverpool while we are out of the Champions League because I think he will have his pick of the worlds best teams.

  19. Love Reina, but think he needs to move for his career (losing his REP, needs new challenge), we need to move forward ourselves. Don't what he was doing, did he think 'THE ANFIELD CAT SHOWED UP AT THE EITHAD' or something and his latest comments just shout out defeatism. We all know we can't compete financially with other teams, that why we're building a model from youth to the first, with the TIKI-TAKA.

  20. He's got some character doesn't he. Like to see that.

  21. Reina errors have cost lfc 3 points, 1 at spurs & 2 at mcfc so let's stop this miss information that reina errors have somehow cost us any more than any other player. If you said that he wasn't commanding enought in his area then you may have an argument, but saying his errors are somehow holding the team back is wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  22. He just omits a defeated demeanour about himself. Personally I like the guy, he's got good craic and joker in the dressing room (so were told). Read somewhere all his errors have lead to goals this season (9 goals I think). As long as he wears the RED of LFC I'll support him, but do think we need change keepers.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I wouldn't swap him with any other keeper!

  24.  i cant believe this is even up for debate....for 120g a week i expect a whole lot better...sick of seeing his moaning face.....sick of seeing him get beat by dumb-ass shots....sick of reading about him slagging the team of saying we cant compete or we stopped him going to arsenal ...heres a thought mister 120g man if you actually saved a shot now and again we may win more...this guy is well passed his sell by date

  27. I agree with @facebook-100003620946676:disqus here. FSG isn't going to break the bank on players.  Considering they spent half as much this year as last year, I don't anticipate anything changing until we make Champions League and the revenue it brings.

  28. Plenty of people sick of reading you slagging off everything LFC.. Constant negativity.

And you call Reina a moaner... kettle pot black. One wonders why you even bother getting out of bed mate..

As for Pepe...Eaten bread is soon forgotten..

  29. dont read it then....or if you do read it proper ....ill run down a list of some of players i have never slagged ...put your glasses on..wisdom.hendo,sturridge.gerrard .enrique, assadi, jonjo, downing, suarez johnson coady yesil, sterling, carra, and others if you read my posts most is aimed at rogers allen and borini reina....allen and borini get it because rogers fawns over them while dissmissing other players so i like to even things up.....reina gets it because anyone who moans on 120 g a week is a disgrace ...ps i dont give a hoot what you or anyone else thinks i have my own mind and own views

    ReplyDelete
  30. Well I thought in terms of captaincy it was Gerrard captain, Carra vice and then Pepe third, although Skrtel and Suarez have been captain (when Skrtel was in fantastic form last season).

3rd in line for captain, massive amount of experience, but Pepe doesn't seem to exert any authority or leadership anymore.

  31. Im so angry the transfer window is already gone, i just cant see reina here anymore, today i was watching a video of reinas howlers since hes here wow there were so many i couldnt believe who knows how many more is yet to come, we would have been third in the table without his mistakes did you know that? Clearly his time is over at this club, right now id accept any keeper but him, hes just sadly shocking, isnt he?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Couldn't agree more , spot on comment, costing us way too many point's, I would definitely let him go !

    ReplyDelete
  33. 18mil is a huge signing for pretty much every club, even city. They might have the money, but 18mil is still 18mil no matter how rich you are. History though does show we can pay that much if needed. we spent 20mil this window, and even in the summer spent  15mil on one player, so I`m sure of they feel he is the right player, they would spend 18mil. There is though no point just spending 18mil on anyone.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Completely agree. some positions youth is a advantage, if your a striker the extra pace is helpful, the lack of fear can be too, but for a keeper experience is gold. You learn by the year, They can also often play till a few years older, so even signing a keeper at 30 isn`t that bad, as you could still have 5plus years left in him.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Nonsense.. You have in a very short period of time made your mind up on the manager and the player's he brought in..

They weren't here a wet week and you along with other's were moaning that they weren't good enough and the end is nigh.

You have never afforded Brendan Rodger's a moment's paitence or support ..

And what exactly are you trying to balence up ?? Are Allen or Borini in the team at the moment .. NO .. Why ? because they're not playing well enough.. So what's your point !?

At least he's had the ball's to bench his under performing signings, unlike Daglish last year when Downing and Henderson were untouchable even though they were worse.

The thing is that no matter what, some people like yourself won't be happy til he's gone.. Your willing him to fail to proove yourself right.. cause heaven forbid you might have to admit that he just might be starting to get it right and admit you were wrong !!

I know some Man Utd fans who still btcih and moan bout fergie even after 25 year and a truck load of silverware.. guess some people just like to moan..

  36. We should have got Butland an stuck him between the post in replacement of Reina from the off.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Pepe doesn't have the same command that he used to, but that doesn't mean we should look for someone else who is similarly lacking.

If you're going down the 'well he can't be any worse' route, then you're setting yourself up for failure.

  38. Ter Stegen is a gem. These days role of a GK has changed. Managers want the keeper to shoot & pass we'll from back & coordinate back line. At 20, 6'3", Ter Stegen is the perfect foil of a modern GK who can serve for decades. I believe he 'll cost us more than Pepe's resale - rich clubs like Real, Berca, MU, Arsenal, Inter, AC, Roma, Lyon, Anzi, RKazan are also in search of GK.

Spending big on potential young GK is always risky, but it's worthy as a young Keeper, if fulfils the potential, can serve & stabilize back line for decades. We have the flop examples of Taibi & De Gea (though I believe he might become a fantastic GK, may be Spain & MU no. 1), at the same time Juve invested big on Bufon, Chesea on Cech. Ideally, I would like Pepe & Ter Stegen overlapping for a year or 2, before the younger one takes over. But Pepe might not stay & we 'll have to sale to buy. I would have gone for Green (QPR) as the backup.

Hummels 'll not come to LFC, even with CL. We have a structured salary cap but Chelsea, MCity, Real, Berca, Bayern, Inter & PSG don't have and all of them (apart from PSG, who purchase player for the fun) need to replace at least 1 of their aging regular CB.

  39. MARC TER STEGEN is a quality keeper and a natural leader that's very confident. He barks orders at his defense and has the kind of presence that is rarely seen from a keeper of such a young age.As for experience or lack of,BEGOVIC has 5 years on him but they've played roughly the same amount of games.
Bringing in a young keeper won't exactly mean we have to "teach a puppy new tricks".It's about enhancing what they already know and do.Young keepers are aware of the qualities needed to succeed.
ASMIR BEGOVIC plays behind a team of monsters/rugby players/UFC fighters so i think a half decent keeper would look good playing for STOKE.Saying that,i do rate him highly but i wouldn't dismiss a young keeper just because DE GEA is looking like the weakest link for MAN U.
DAVID DE DEA looks like a schoolboy amongst men when the area is packed and doesn't strike me as being the most confident. The communication with his back four is non existent.Apart from being a good shot stopper i'm struggling to identify another positive to his game.
3 years ago i wouldn't have swapped REINA for any other keeper in the world.Unfortunately these days i have a long list of keepers that would be a upgrade to what i view as a problem position. If you have a quality keeper with a commanding presence, good temperament that is vocal and plays behind a solid back four, experience is not really a factor. It will be interesting to see who BRENDAN RODGERS goes for in the summer!

  43. always the summer, then it will be jan and then the summer after

    ReplyDelete
  44. When BR criticises its called reverse psychology because he managers a team and is playing a media game.Going by the form of DOWNING and HENDO it seems to work. When you criticise it's called bitching because its not constructive and you are not a manager so comparing what you say to what BR says is stupid. You concentrate to much on trying to be a comedian.
Sarcastic responses when someone disagrees with you is getting predictable.Be constructive when talking about LFC,leave scathing put downs for kids in the playground!

  45. I think Lewandowski is looking to move to England. I'm not sure if he would move away from Dortmund just for a bit more money. Apparently Man United are front runners for him but with Van Persie still there I can't see him fit in. Not as a regular anyway. He could do a job at Anfield though. As a real targetman although Sturridge seems to have cornered the market on that for now.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The thing is, if we snooze now and want to buy him five years from now, he'd cost an arm and a leg. Reina was only 23 when he joined and Courtois has been doing great at Atletico and he's only 21. Age should not necessarily hold him back. Especially with Agger and Carragher in front of him. Another option in Germany imo is Adler of HSV. He's about 27 I think.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ratkitskiy, Alderweireld, Varane. I don't think we need imposing. Ricardo Carvalho wasn't imposing either but he was by far superior to John Terry just because of his ability to read the game and move the ball up the pitch.

  52. You've called BR's a bully on numerous occassions.. constantly criticise, amongst other thing's, his man management.

When all the evidence suggest's he's got it right. He told Hendo and Downing they could leave.. 2 expensive signings who have under performed since arriving at the club.. and hey presto they are actually starting to come in to a bit of form.. Likewise with enrique.. a player that had a severe loss of form was called out by Rodger's and hey presto, before his recent injury, we see the player we had for the first 6 months.

People, myself included, questioned why he didn't rest gerrard earlier in the season when it was clear he was struggling , but he stuck with him, and now look .. 5 goals and 7 assists in his last 9 games. That suggets good man management to me because which ever route he has taken with player's seems to be working.

His constant praise of the team is called positive reinforcement.. and for a new manager trying to implement his ideas on a group containg a lot of young players it's important. And surely your not naive enough to think that everything said publicly is said privately.

And yet when he had a go at them after the oldham game people were giving out about the way he spoke about the players.. Can't win. He also came out against the player's after the stoke and Villa games so don't give me this nonsense that he never criticises the team.

Everything your saying he is actually doing.. playing form players. Skirtel is benched.. Allen, his golden boy according to you, is being benched because they're not not doing the business. Along with Borini who only having played 384 mins in the league this season is already being wrote off and slated by you at every oppurtunity.

And that's not with satanding the fact that he's tring out new player's in new systems .. some will work some won't .. that's where a small bit of paitence and cop on from the likes of you come in..

Instead of just constantly spouting Allen is crap.. Rodger's is crap why don't you try to look at the bigger picture.. step away from the keyboard and take a walk some time..
