'LFC could sink' - Kenny Dalglish in veiled attack on Rodgers. Bitter...?

Liverpool are in the midst of a costly slump at the moment that threatens to completely derail the club's season. Defeat in Russia on Thursday leaves the club on the brink of a Europa League exit, and with only one win in the last five Premier League games, the club's chances of making the Champions League are virtually over. Sunday's league game with Swansea City is the latest in a long-line of must-win matches for the Reds, and ahead of the game, former Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has piled the pressure on Brendan Rodgers.

In his column for The Mirror today, Dalglish hails Michael Laudrup for the 'terrific' job he's done at Swansea, and indirectly sticks the knife into Rodgers, suggesting that the Reds season will collapse if Liverpool fail to beat the Swans this Sunday. He observed:

"Failure to beat Swans will see Liverpool sink. There are 12 games left and so 36 points to play for, but Liverpool are 12 points behind Tottenham in fourth place – with Arsenal and Everton also competing for the Champions League places.

"That means Brendan Rodgers really cannot afford to drop a point for the rest of the season to finish in the top four – and, even then, Spurs and Arsenal have to drop a dozen points. It is a big ask".


In my view, this is a veiled attack on Rodgers motivated by Dalglish's bitterness at losing his job. You have to ask yourself why he would deliberately pile this pressure onto the Reds boss at such a crucial time in the season. Did he need to write this column? Did he need to basically suggest that Liverpool's season will self-destruct if the club doesn't beat Swansea? Dalglish is, of course, entitled to his opinion, but it just seems like he's kicking a man when he's down.

I don't feel optimistic about the Swansea game. Liverpool will be a tired team after two games already this week, and with only two days recovery time after the Zenit game (and a long plane journey), fatigue could end up being a problem. Rodgers acknowledged this in his pre-Swansea press conference yesterday, and slammed the Premier League for their incompetent scheduling. He barked:

"I was very disappointed with the Premier League, to be honest, to put [the Swansea game] in on a week when we have played on a Monday and played on a Thursday in an away trip to Russia, and put it in between that and another important European game on Thursday. For us to have it thrown in there when there were other free weeks was bemusing, to say the least."

    We lost FOURTEEN times in the LEAGUE.. count them 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,FOURTEEN !!!!!!!!

    Lowest league points total in over 30 years..EVER I think if you factor in the 3 points for a win and reduction from 42 to 38 games.

    Now YOU explain how tht was progress ???

  3. BR can only take us where his experience had taken him. 8th position iS as high as LFC will go under him and europe, hey we are out of it already. We are not of the Istanbul calibre. KD is right in his assessment...we are already an also ran top team. BR is making a joke of LFC..HE lacks top notch experience...and come on, since the beginning of his tenure till today, we have been leaking goals..we are an easy team to beat. The results speak for themselves and if any fan want to believe we are heading in the right direction with BR, then you are disillusional too.

I'm more happy under Rodgers than kenny, Rodgers has a target to hit, he has football knowledge (current knowledge not past) he knows what he has to do, even alonso said Rodgers need patience it's a project, we are Only dropping points through mistakes and lost of concentration, is that Rodgers fault? No, we knew it was a long project when he came in, we didn't expect instant success.

  9. I don't think this is a veiled attack by Kenny. He is speaking the truth. However, I wouldn't blame him for being bitter. The way FSG treated him, the way BR initially treated Kenny's buys, the fact that expectations and achievements are even lower than last seasons, yet BR seemingly is secure in his job. Kenny was being kind, because, in fact the season has already been derailed.

    BR will need something special to boost the players' confidence ahead of the Swansea match. The season seems all but over, although they should still be playing for a Europa league place. Pressure shouldn't be put on the January buys, but Sturridge and Coutinho may be our main hope of a revival. Fresh legs, fresh ideas and all that.

    All in all, I fail to see how are fortunes are going to change dramatically. It's not that we're under-performing or out of luck (as it seemed last term), we're actually just not good enough.

  11. I believe KD was right. Bitter? Possibly. Look at the table. 30 points behind Utd virtually. 12 games still to go. As already stated that Rodgers is a yes man to FSG. I've lost faith in both of them. FSG haven't a clue about football & 3 managerial posts Rodgers has had, He's been fired from 2 & then left Swansea for us. Doesn't look good does it?
    Personally FSG aren't the correct owners for this club. They've taken on a club that's too big for them. Rodgers isn't able to manage a club like this as again it's a massive club and he can't do it.

  14. Please, Liverpool have been sliding and it has not been from last season its been going on for some time. BR can not perform a miracle, no manager can so why do fans actually expect a miracle. What BR can do is improve over time and as fans we have to give that. David Moyes is a great example with the backing of board and support of the fans the team over time can go far. If Liverpool FC  give what Everton board have given to Moyes. Patience. I guarantee you in a few years it would be better than what it is right now.

    Please, if any deluded fan actually expects the Liverpool FC  to flood in money to buy success then you fall under that category of "glory hunters"   

    We are not City nor are we Chelsea, we are Liverpool. We spend what we have and build for a future. This was not going to be the season where everything is going to be airy fairy. Suck it up and start supporting Liverpool.

  17. Without doubt we could have given him more time. That is where the issue arises, you have to give a manager at least 3-5 years to sort things out especially the hole Liverpool FC were at. To get everything the way he wants it to be. After that it might even take a further 1-2 years to see the fruits of building that foundation and get the plan implemented.

    Why would that not work with Daglish? because Kenny Daglish is 61 years old. I'm not trying to be ageist or anything but if you add up the time he would need to build a team and get it flowing he will be 68 years old by then. I'm sorry to say near the age of 70 you would be thinking about retiring from work. Before you know it we are back to square one looking for another manager and we would have to go through that same cycle again.

    If Kenny Daglish was kept, he would not have been a long term solution it would have delayed the inevitable. Why delay that phrase what good would that do to Liverpool Football Club. No good at all.

  18. Yawn, your still holding onto our PAST, we are not that, who ahead of us? United? City? Chelsea? Spurs? Arsenal? Everton? Swansea? West brom? there teams haven't been through the same as us, we had old owners who bleeded us dry, sold our best players, we had to rebuild, we nearly went out business, I rather be from 6th to 9th running perfectly than in championship like Leeds which got ruined by there owners. Give it a rest and back Rodgers, stop being small minded, it was never going to be a quick fix, you need to snap into reality and not in your own little world who thinks our squad is capable to fight on all fronts.

  19. Maybe he's being truthful only through his experience in mismanaging Liverpool last year. After the Carling Cup final and the game vs. Arsenal, our season was over and in 3 months we showed no sign of revival.

    I would agree with KD, we need a miracle or three to make top four this season.. I'd say he was stating what most are thinking, including BR!

    Just plain old honesty, although BR can't be seen to accept defeat so honestly or take the risk of further reducing morale and closing motivational channels... simples :)

  29. Louis Van Gaal was meant to be go for technical director roles. One which BR did not approve of. Although Van Gaal was interested for the manager role the same issue will arise he is 61 years old. The same age as Daglish, within the next 5-7 we would have to replace him with another manager. Why? People age they get tired, body cant keep up mentally and physically especially a job which is 7 days a week non stop. Yes we could have taken Van Gaal as a manager but he would not be a long term solution only short term. Which club likes changing manager. So why take someone, invest the time, energy to build a squad who would leave due to the fact there bound to retire soon from managing. Only then for someone else to take over. Makes no sense reason why FSG went for someone young, who has a vison (like every other manager) but also would be there for a long period.

We have got rid of dead weight, got important players to sign new contracts, reduced our wage bill, introduced players from academy, changed backroom staff for the better, playing touch and move football, got sponsors from Warrior (our highest shirt sponsors) and Chervrolet plus many other sponsors, refurbishing Anfield to 60,000 stadium, got justice for Hillsborough. Overall the club has progressed in so many ways on and off the pitch in the just the last year. Have you forgotten what state the club was in during Hick and Gillet.  

    Overall we have improved from last year, maybe not in cup competition. But watching Liverpool play the way we do it can only get better.

    But the point is that for all the stats people can roll out about Rodgers this saeason  KD can be painted in just as bad a light .. I'm not saying things have got drastically better .. what I am saying is they haven't got drastically worse as some people are trying to say.

    It gives me no pleasure in highlighting KD's shortfalls and I wasn't exactly in favour of him being sacked..

    But as you point out we're only 2/3's the way triough the season.. his FIRST season

And your obduracy in playing them drove away experienced players like Kuyt and Maxi.Still we are offensively better than last year. Two or three quality signings in  summer can drastically improve the team. Can't blame Rodgers for individual mistakes of players. I still think we can finish this season on a high

  40. Jaime - You gave Kenny a real kicking all last season. He is a proper football manager who has won silverware, he is not a coach who has won nowt.

    The real question is how did Rodgers actually get the job? WHY did FSG/Ayre appoint him? By what rationale?

    WHY did they actually think appointing someone who is still a near rookie as a Premier League manager, would be a good move for our proud club.

    WHY, were FSG hynoptised in the interview by Rodgers' blarney. The pages marked how to defend are not in his all encompassing 180 page dossier are they?

    We have lost 6 times at home,
    We were dumped out of both domestic cups with a whimper,
    We can not beat any of the teams who were our traditional rivals,
    We are 29 points (10 wins ) behind Utd with just 2/3 of the season gone.
    Previously good defensive players are now deemed not good enough.
    Worst start ever to a season and the worst points total at this stage in a generation.

    This is supposed to be progress?

    Dalglish is right if we lose the next few games, the season will be nose dive into irrelevancy.

    We needed an experienced proven winner, we have a relative novice, its hardly surprising that things have gone awry.

    You have to question the competency of the board for this appointment.

    Those who say it's not a swipe of course it is,he's undermining BR. How KD can talk is beyond me, since his legacy has contributed to our slump. Allowing established internationals to leave, biggest crime was Meireles leaving wld have negated need for Hendo & Adam. Lets also clarify th myth, KD didn't rate Carroll either otherwise he wld have played him when Saurez was banned yet he was part a sanctioning the most epic swindle. The purchase of a £35 mill pub player..
    If KD did what Rednapp did when he left AVB with a top notch squad then fine have a go, otherwise he shld keep quiet & take the ambassador job!

    Loooooook and listen for once in your lives,it seems like people are programmed and cannot see a priest on a mountain of sugar,FACT.Rafa took over a team which scraped into the CL in the last game away to Charlton.Rafa rightly got rid of Owen and Murphy and replaced them with Garcia and alonso.Rafas tactical brain won the CL because the likes of Traore,Biscan,Mellor,Smicer,Baros,Cisse all ended up with a CL winners medal not because of their talent but because of Rafas talent,FACT.Rafs 2nd season in comes Reina who goes on to win 3 golden gloves a WC winners medal and 2 european champs winners medals with Spain as well as a fa cup and another CL final appearance with the likes of Pennant,and Kuyt as our only striker yes Kuyt when Milan had europes best to pick from.Kuyt actually scored but surely if ERafa was backed properly like the king was when he was given £120m then Rafa would have LFC winning everything forever,but no Rafa did it the hard way

  59. BR got a team that has not been in champions league for at least three  seasons before. Your beloved Kenny Daglish, Roy Hodgson and Rafa's last season. So we have been without champions league for some time. That's not Brendan Rodgers fault thats just what he got when he took over the team. If for however we had champions league spot last season I would have seen where your coming from. But we didn't so clearly the squad has been lacking. BR aint no massiah he is human like me and you. Liverpool is in a mess there is no easy solution to get a champions league spot.

  69. I think the opinion that Rodgers wasn't good enough was formulated before he was even given the job. It's just taken 5 months to confirm it. Many people disagree, but why was Kenny not given more time? A striker and more time would have seen us progress. Even Steve Clarke has stated that with the players being together for a full season already, if KD hadn't been sacked, Liverpool would have challenged for top 4 this season. While this can't be objectively proved, I think this is correct.

    Right now, it seems that we need to improve in ALL departments. We're still not scoring enough, but we're fortunate that Suarez has had his shooting boots on at times this season. The midfield is usually AWOL and the defence shocking. But that doesn't really matter at this stage of the season (there's very litttle to play for presently), the only thing that matters is whether FSG think BR can iron out those problems. I don't think he can, because many of the problems aren't just down to the personnel he has at his disposal, but the way in which he chooses to deploy them.

  72. Why shouldn't Kenny or anyone else put pressure on Rodgers? Should everyone just stroke BR's ego just like he strokes his 'big' players ego's? Oh Rodger's is fantastic, It's a near perfect performance from Rodgers this season...You get the point. 

    Rodgers needs to know where the bottom line is. IMO 6th place is achievable and considering all the circumstances, I'd take 6th place. 

    Anything under 8th (worse than last season) and we have to ask ourselves what have we actually achieved. Because at the moment we cannot defend, we don't press that much. We can't see Rodgers game plan in effect. Only one signing has been successful so far. Hendo who BR tried to sell is our best midfielder this season. 

    BR has nothing to fall back on, no cup success, no fantastic transfer business, nothing. So the minimum is a respectable league finish.

  78. Yes it is quite a rarity to have a manager 5-7 years plus. But as an employer you would want that option regardless if the tenure could run short. It's a nice option to have.

    If you take this into the practical world and you have people applying for a job surely you will take someone who can be there for the long regardless if they could leave rather than taking someone on for the short run. It's just a simple business model.

  83. Jason get your head out Kennys backside, and get to know the facts. If kenny was still manager, andy Carroll would be our main striker...spearing would be rotating between gerrard and Lucas...Henderson would be playing on the right...and downing would be on worse form than he is already. We're playing much better football than last season and we actually know how to win games which magically disappeared second half of last season. KK is gone, and good riddens. Great player, great manager first time round but second time round he flopped...horribly. End off

Now I'm going to speak from my opinion here, but I feel sometimes if you employ someone who has been there and done it kind of attitude there hunger may be lacking compared to someone who hassent done it but has that passion, zeal to go further and push boundaries. That's what you get with a young manager.

    BR said it himself sometimes having young players who come though the system (accademy) are prepared to go trough a barbed wire for you. Where as a first team play will try to get the job done.

    Overall there ain't no right or wrong answer - experience or bringing in a young person. At the end of the day you employ someone who fits into the plan and shows desire like you would with any other job.

  85. Yeah, this "King" had us playing football in the second half of last year that was no better than the bottom three. A Carling Cup trophy simply can't make up for what was miserable league form. If you've forgotten, go back and watch the last 20 games of that season. We went from being competitive to just falling apart. It wasn't good enough.

    If Rodgers can't do better than that and have us finish with more league points that we got last year then maybe there was no point in changing managers. But it was that last loss to Swansea last year that really sealed it for Kenny. Rodgers has a chance to go one better today and at least manage to win a home game when it matters. if that doesn't happen then I expect we'll see Rodgers out the door too, I wouldn't have a problem with that. If we win today then that's something that Kenny couldn't achieve and it could mean we get a roll on and finish this season as high as 5th. It doesn't sound like much, but it's a hell of an improvement over last year. You know that.

  87. The point I was coming from is taking on a manager at the age of 61 is pointless. He has only 5-10 years if not less before he will hang up his coat. So why do that? There is no point giving a manager the time to build a team. Eventually someone else would have to take over and rebuild a team. It seems a pointless cycle.

  89. Kenny had us playing like a team on the way to the Championship at the end of last year. Has everyone suddenly gotten mass amnesia and forgotten this? We started that season well but in the end if was awful, so it doesn't matter where we were this point last year. We're going to have to play absolute rubbish to match what ultimately happened under Kenny and in fact Rodgers only has to barely hold the team together in order for us to string together enough results for the final place to be better than last year. It will take a woeful string of results to see us not finish higher.

  96. KD was never been part of fsg's plan. He was only a stop gap solution for them to prevent liverpool from free fall and by successfully unite and stabilize fsg have to give KD a permanent role to prevent an uproar. After a poor season, fsg got a good excuse to get rid of him and put their plan back on track.

MU with Sir Alex went through an initial bad patch before they became consistently successful. Sir Alex had build a good base for long term success and that is why they are always about this season.

  99. Whether Rodgers is a clown or a Bill, only time will tell. If all you guys keep calling for his head, we will never know. Yes, i believe Brendan has the potential  to succeed.    I have supported LFC before Bill Shankly's time and I have always supported the team in good and bad times and always will even during these last few seasons with all the ownership and managerial problems.

At the end of last season we had the third best defence in the league, won silverware for the first time in 6 years (I have been supporting Liverpool for over 35 years and still value every piece of silverware), made the final of another so I dont think we were doing too badly. Kenny had 4 bad months, but had Gerrard,Suarez and Lucas out for a third of the season and you say we would be relegated this season?  Lottery is coming up soon, can I borrow your crystal ball please..

  104. what are you on about kenny went on record stating that every signing that was made was in his tenure was his decision funny that you give kenny credit for signing suarez yet you blame all his transfer fails on comolli wake up he deserved to get sacked henderson is coming good but he still wasn't or isn't worth the 16-20mill that was paid for him and your right kenny probably would have signed adam johnson but not for 10 mill he would have probably bidded in the 20-25mill range rodgers transfer record has 2 blips in the shape of borini and allen but he has picked up 2 gems in sturridge and coutinho

  107. No, it doesn't mean that we won against Swansea and everything is back on track. 1 game does not define a season. We have not been consistent and there are still weaknesses in the team. Still lots of work to do for Brendan.

    Again, IF is a big word. If Swansea puts out their 1st team, would we still win or if we played other players would we still win, if this and if that. Honestly, I don't know if we would still win but whatever it is, as long as 3 points is in the bag, we'll just take it. Lets see how things pan out for the remainder of the season.

After the Rovers away we was getting results! All you morans saying Brendan is better than our king, you must have Down syndrome.   114. We have had the worst season in all my years of support, which stretches 30 years. Brendan Rogers project has been a hopeless failure.


    We now also know that Swansea came to Anfield with their reserve team and got a deserved hiding, but that does not change the fact that BR has not had a a clue against most of the teams we faced this season, I think his a good coach but has loads to learn, while Steve Clark is a far better coach, I would say he could be offered head coach position at the end of the season, but the team of Dalglish and Clark as Manager and Assistant Manager was a better one,

  115. He inherited a settled team, while the players we have are on par with anything Tottenham have, while player for player we better than Everton and Arsenal. While if not for injury and a small pool of players WBA would be streaking ahead of us. If we don't watch it we could still end up below WBA.


    To me finishing in 7 with no europe and no cups is a poor season, and this season has been one of the poorest in my living memory and support of over 30 years. Like Roy Evans teams we playing pretty football, but nothing more.


    Brendan Rogers project has been a failure, I would say keep him as a coach but KD and Steve clark are a better combination.


    What we need to realise from this season, is that we have got good players who under experienced leadership of the Liverpool way of playing football would have had us challenging for champions league at least.


    We need to build the Boot room, bring back KD and Steve Clark and make Brendan head coach, I would also find a place for Alan Hansen, and John Barnes in the Boot room staff..

  117. well £150m is an exageration considering that players were sold to set off that amount while he was not even in charge of player transfers but that fell to Damien Comolli and would have been signed off by Ian Ayre.

    He also had to deal with a racism allegations which should have been Ayres' responsibility, and players who were not fit courtesy of LFC head Sports Medicine and Sports Science, Dr Peter Brukner.


    Lets also not forget that we missed Stevie G and Lucas for most of last season, and for an important part of the season missed Suarez for 8 games, thus we did not have Gerard, Lucas and Suarez in the team. If these players were not available at the same time this season we could have been outside the top 10.

  119. nonsense, we had many injuries, to key players such as Gerrard, Lucas, and Charlie Adams, while Suarez was out for 8 games, if we did not have Gerrards, Lucas and Suarez services at the same time for 8 games in February this season we would be in 10th or out of the top 10,

    While King Kenny also had to deal with issues had to deal with racism allegations which was Ian Ayres duty, and inflated transfer fees, negotiated by Damian Comolli and signe doff by Ian Ayre, that placed huge and unnecessary pressure on the young shoulders of players such as Hendo, Downing and Carroll.
