£30m star who got Gerrard vote in Ballon d'OR hints at UK move. LFC-bound?

In an interview last month, revered former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso confirmed that there is 'always a chance' that he could return to the Premier League at some point in the future, and with his situation at Real Madrid currently up in the air, the Spaniard has once again hinted that he is on the way out of the Bernabeau.

Responding to questions about his Madrid Future last night, the World Cup winning midfielder - who cost the Spanish giants £30m in 2009 - told Reporters:

"Renewing [my contract with Madrid] is not something I am thinking about at the moment.

"It's not on the table but everything has its time."

When asked a couple of weeks ago about the possibility of a return to the Premier League, Alonso said:

"I've no idea what will happen. I have not decided on my future. We will see what happens in the next few months. There is always a chance I could go back to the Premier League as I always enjoyed good times there"

I'm sure many Liverpool fans would love to see Alonso back at Anfield. Steven Gerrard certainly would - the Liverpool captain has praised his former team-mate many times, and he voted for Alonso in the recent Ballon d'Or poll, putting him third behind Messi and Ronaldo. The Spanish international is definitely open to a return to the club, as he revealed in an interview last summer:

"I think that in football so many things change. If circumstances arrived [for a return to Liverpool], then why not? I miss the lads, I miss the atmosphere at Melwood; it was a great place to work, and the scenario of Anfield is unbeatable.

"The special nights I have been privileged enough to live, those will be in my memory forever and they are difficult to compare anywhere in the world. At the moment I don't know what is going to happen, but it could be a possibility. Never say never"

In the same interview, Alonso also revealed that his biggest goal at Real Madrid was to win the La Liga title. He has now achieved that, which means he's won every major trophy out there. What better time to return to the club he loves so much, to work with a manager he respects? Said Alonso:

"I think that everyone is really optimistic about the new manager Brendan Rodgers. As a Liverpool fan it gives me hope for the future"

Nuri Sahin revealed in August that Alonso still misses Anfield:

"Xabi said just good things [about Liverpool]. He played a long time here, and he is still in love with Liverpool Football Club. Everything Xabi have told me is true. It’s a very big club with a big history. I think I have made the right choice"

Jamie Carragher also misses Alonso's presence at Anfield. He told the ITV during Euro 2012:

"It just sickens me to see Alonso in the red of Spain and not the red of Liverpool. We'd love to have him back - he was a fantastic player at our club, and he's one of the top players at Euro 2012."

I think Liverpool fans have a tendency to romanticise Alonso's possible return without considering the reality. The Spaniard is a bona-fide world class midfielder with peerless experience, but I'd hate to see him return to Anfield and spend most of his time on the bench (due to squad rotation/preference for younger players etc).

Having said that, Andrea Pirlo joined Juventus at the age of 32 and totally transformed the team, and Alonso is certainly capable of having a similar impact at Liverpool. And I would always have him in the team ahead of Allen, Shelvey, Henderson et al.

Alonso's contract with Real Madrid expires next summer, and if ever there was a player who would fit into Rodgers' football philosophy, it's Alonso. The question is, would FSG sanction a move for the Spaniard?

  1. I would have him back in a heart beat! He would be an excellent role model for Allen!

  3. I think he will be back in the summer.

  4. jaimie your right its a non starter fsg would not sanction a move,he dose not fit there criteria (hes a established world class player would want decent wages and there would be no profit for the greedy tw@ts:disqus

  5. Is his contract up in the coming summer or the summer of 2014? Would love to see him back, i just don't see it happening though

  6. Not going to happen, FSG and BR are focused on the future.  As much as I love Xabi, he was with us for a few years, he played well in 2004-2005, then went quiet in 2005-2007 and then got good again in 2008, then Rafa wanted him out so in 2008-2009 he played out of his skin but knew he was moving on.

    God damn Gareth Barry!

  7. Possibly summer - depends on Champions league outcomes and whether Maurinho stays or goes at Real. Would make an excellent midfield trio with Gerrard and Lucas with the likes of Henderson, Allen and Shelvey coming off the bench

  8. I can't see why so many people are saying that fsg wouldn't go for him? Yeah they are planing for the future but didn't they nearly sign depsey

  9. He would be an amazing player to have back at Liverpool and the Pirlo example is an excellent one as they play similar roles. Xabi's game is suited to him playing for years to come providing he keeps fit so Liverpool could get a few years out of him whilst he provides his wealth of experience and talent to the younger group of midfielders coming through at the club. I really cant see any negatives with the signing of Alonso. Hopefully Rodgers and the owners feel the same.

  10. Wasn't this story regurgitated back couple of weeks?

  11. Jamie, this is one of the best articles you have written,  I would take him in an instance. He would be a fantastic addition, and in my opinion would walk straight back into the first team. His age should not be an issue as his vision, skill and passing is sublime, he is not one to over complicate. LFC once had a similar player in Jan Molby, now for those not old enough or privileged to see him play, Jan was a player who pulled strings on the field. When his pace failed him ( an he was never that quick) he never looked out of place, I remember him rarely straying far from the centre circle, taking possession and then artfully spraying the ball around before anyone could get near enough to tackle him, what a legend. Xabi has this same skill set at his disposal, sometimes an opportunity knocks and age should just not come into the equation, exceptions have to be made, and the fact he is one of the few truly world class players who would come to us at the moment, it's a no brainer. He would certainly help attract other players too I reckon. At least he is a realistic prospect amongst all the other fantasy additions were linked with.

  12. I think Benitez's decision to get rid of Xabi for Barry was the beginning of the end for him. Xabi was well loved by the fans and that was the first time the fans massively opposed his decision. On top of that Xabi was loved in the dressing room and I'm absolutely certain that the likes of Gerrard, Carragher and Torres were demotivated by the whole thing.

  13. When FSG took over they said that they wanted to model Liverpool on the way Arsenal is being run. Investment in youngsters, building a team etc. Some fans, to whom the world is black and white, have interpreted that as we only buy young players. They brought back Bellamy and I'm sure that if Xabi wants to come back it's something that Rodgers will welcome with open arms. The experience, the love he has for the club, the fact that he fits perfectly into his system, the way he can take the youngsters under his wing and the good press it would give him with the supporters are too many positives to ignore.

  14. He's a regular at Real Madrid so I just can't see it happen. His contract there still runs for more than a year and we may see then where he is and where we are. I'd have him back in a heartbeat right now and play him (now listen Jason) at the expense of Joe Allen most of the time. Should he become available in the future, he may well have the kind of impact Gary McAllister had back when he joined us, and he was 35 at the time.

  17. It probably even was the end of our Champions League aspirations. Next who left was Mascherano followed by Torres. Our biggest names (bar Gerrard) gone and it showed in our results ever since.

  21. I would have Alsono back any day of the week, but I have a feeling if he does come, he will go to Chelsea. That is were the Spanish/Spanish speaking vibe is right now. We moved away from that when Rafa left, gradually over time selling off a lot of the players (yes I know we still have some).

If he did come to the prem, it would be for the final years of his career, and I can`t see him wanting to spend them in a mid-tabled place club. Often when people do that last move, they one of two things, massive wages or a title shot, we provide neither.

    ReplyDelete
  22. signed a pre contract agreement in the jan to come in the summer benitez was the manager at the time. hodgson got stuck with him and janovic all rafas doing!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Unfortunately, I cannot see him coming back unless he's going to take a huge paycut and accept a more limited role. He's playing consistently for Real Madrid and if he came back here, I don't think BR would want to start him over Joe Allen simply out of pride alone.  Stupid, I know.  But managers let their pride get in the way of smart decisions too often.

  24. off topic ,last sunday brad jones again put in another very good display .he didnt deserve to get dropped in the 1 st place and think he should keep his place on sunday. along with carra who has been top draw in the last 3 games hes played.  3 5 2 with carra  skirtel and agger.

  25. look m8 you will be happy to see us in the championship if all fans were like you fsg would think all there dreams had come true, and don,t even start about the european fair play because then we will fall even further behind

    ReplyDelete
  26. As much as i like Alonso ...i dont think it would suit rogers or his system...he needs younger players who are more likley not to question his tactics..no surprise that the younger players have looked better they are more receptive...i think the system will work better when the old guard are phased out

    ReplyDelete
  27. you can say that about a host of players from souness to hansen to barnes to fowler....etc etc

    ReplyDelete
  28. I disagree. As it states in the article, Alonso has won every major trophy there is to win for a footballer. So if he does come back to the prem it will be Liverpool and ONLY Liverpool, as he loves this club more than any other, including Madrid. so unless of course Liverpool didn't want him and say Chelsea, United or City did then he'll go somewhere else

    ReplyDelete
  29. That was the case with Jovanovic (although in February that year), but not Joe Cole, I'm afraid. He was out of contract in June 2010 and signed for us on 19th Jul 2010.

  31. RAFASdaysWEREtheGLORYdays5:45 pm, January 09, 2013

People say Rafa wanted him out,Rafa was thinking of the moaning fans who were saying we want the league as were sick of just having CL finals to look forward to, were bored with them.So Rafa needed to raise money to bring in players who would be more suited to the PL.Your right by saying Alonso the year b4 wasnt upto much,so Rafa tried to offload him, which imo at the time wasnt a bad idea.alonso then knew he was playing for a move for a new club as Juve changed their mind on him. The two undisputable facts are,one Rafa asked Alonso to stay with LFC,two In Spain they had a rule called Beckhams Law were footballers coming from abroad only paid 23% tax so as to encourage the best players to go to Spain, this law was about to change to 45% tax and it was Alonsos last chance to go and be much better off as the 23% law would stand for people who were already on it and theirs wouldnt change.Rafa was loyal and expected loyalty back, imo Alonso went solely for money,he isnt loyal, like when he wouldnt say if he could travel to a CL match as he wasnt sure when his baby was due,yet Rafa was so loyal he missed his Fathers funeral to be wih LFC for a game. All this Alonso this Alonso that, these people make me want to throw up on the spot.

  32. Fair point about Jones, but you have to remember Reina has also been in good form last couple of games and let's be honest Jones was facing Mansfield Town, yes, they did have many attempts on goal and Jones did well to stop them but against United you have Van Persie and Hernandez and a very decent midfield to deal with and i think Reina's experience is very key in a game like this. Jones is a very good back up keeper but i would never play him ahead of a fit and in form Reina agains United

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have given no indication that i'm optimistic about our future. i said IF he decides to come to the Prem. But I AM very optimistic about our future LOL. why shouldn't we be optimistic? we have the best young talents in the prem and we keep them we'll be a very good team in the years to come

    ReplyDelete
  34. sorry i thought your reply was to my comment. now i feel like an idiot lol

    ReplyDelete
  35. Actually I am, but I think it will take time, and for any player who only has a few seasons left in them, prob not in that time frame

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yes he loves the club, but football is still a job. He hasn`t won every major trophy, he aint won the prem league, and a lot of footballers would love to have that under their belt. Do you really think if City offered him 200k a week, and we offered him 80k he would come to us still? There is love for a club, and then there is making a smart money move.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Xabi was amazing, is still amazing and would be amazing if he came to join us.....  he would give all around a lift, the guile and presence that we have been missing....   Come on Brendan make it happen, he's got Mersey in his blood

    ReplyDelete
  38. I thought you could only sign a january pre contract with a foreign club?

    ReplyDelete
  39. The answer which you failed to mention, so I will do it for you is ZERO. So to me that isn`t really that greedy is it? What people fail to see is football clubs do actually have to balance books. The fact we were run poor before, and therefore kept making large losses is not FSG`s fault. That doesn`t mean those who see that want Championship football, but maybe that we understand accounting a bit better :-)

I really don`t understand fans who would have us spend till we go under. How can that be any good for the club?

    ReplyDelete
  40. told him not to drink the water

  42. reina has been in form for only the last two games .hidden agenda me thinks ! he wants away and the window is open.well we will see sunday

    ReplyDelete
  43. spoke to a member of lfc staff on the same subjet he told me it was benetiz who signed him and liverpool were duty bound to honnor the contract.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Personally I have thought that Reina wanted away the Day Rafa left. Since then he has had to watch his team mates like Torres, Masch and Alsono move onto other clubs where they have won CL, and League titles. Reina was apart of that golden bunch, so must feel like he missed out.

    ReplyDelete
  45. You should stop telling me what I would be happy to see as you obviously don't have the slightest idea of what I like to see. Your comment is presumptuous and ill-informed.

And as usual you fail to answer the questions you are confronted with. Weak, very weak, Jason. You start attacking me as soon as you would have to come up with something well conceived.

    ReplyDelete
  46. FSG is American. Not Russian or Arab owner. They aren't as passionate as other owners but it's business. But what scared them was Kenny Dalglish n Comoli.  We all know the story. Hope things change and they don't bury their money too deep to dig out fast enough when a good deal or player is needed.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Fat heavy chubby Barry !?!
I was praying we didn't get him. Thank god !!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I never commented on whether or not you are optimistic about our future. Therefore I hardly understand your reply in context with my comment, but I agree that we have reason to be (cautiously) optimistic.

    ReplyDelete
  49. We nearly signed everybody !!!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. With the right signings and a bit of luck it may go faster than we hope right now. Alonso may, in a year or so, turn out to be just the catalyst we need.

    ReplyDelete
  51. but not on a big 90k a week contract .missed out? dont think so! the only people that have missed out are the fans who have had to suffer inept goalkeeping from a man on huge poke for a keeper

    ReplyDelete
  52. Im so with you Carl ! Every single point .

    ReplyDelete
  53. i can still see jasons point though. not many clubs are run as profitable investments. if it is a must that we run with profit, i cant see us in europe anytime soon. we need massive investments, FSG just doesnt seem to be sanctioning them.

the 100mill Spending Spree that kenny had couldve made us a valid title contender, but we all know how that went.

we need a successfull transfer window (ive pointed out before), with a lot more funds than 10-20m.

Im still curious what will happen in couple of years when the FFP is introduced and active. maybe we will be more competitive, maybe not.

but atleast we arent in administration.

    ReplyDelete
  54. honest m8 a member of lfc staff told me .maybe under the table deal but any way thank god hes gone

    ReplyDelete
  55. If we bought Xabi back, I'd have a stupid grin on my face. It'd be just that though- stupid.

We need to start looking forward. Alonso would be the best midfielder in our side right now but all he'd do is last 1-2 seasons (at a premium rate) and then we'd have Henderson and Allen having rotted from becoming second choices. I also think that Gerrard will probably be kept in the side past his sell-by date on the basis of him and Alonso having an understanding.

I wouldn't complain if we got him, but I think it'd be the heart ruling the head.

    ReplyDelete
  56. i,ve answered your ? LOADS OF TIME YOU JUST CHOOSE NOT TO TAKE ANYONES VIEW BUT THAT OF PEOPLE WHO AGREE WITH YOU,GO SAVE  A TREE,dam did not realise had cap lock on lol

    ReplyDelete
  57. He would be an excellent signing and worth every penny for the influence of having a world cup winner who loves LFC and still has friends in the squad. I'd be happy if we tried for a pre-contract agreement (or whatever it's called) now for a short-ish contract in the summer.

    ReplyDelete
  58. we did almost sign Dempsey and what many people may not realize is also that a desperate Brendan Rodgers tried to sign Italian miestro Allesandro Del Piero when his contract ran out last summer with Juves. Del Piero decided to choose Sydney FC in the Australian A-league over Liverpool for political reasons.  FSG and BR recognize that exceptions can be made in regards to bringing in older players. If the vet is a recognized force in the world of football Liverpool will not shy away from doing business with him. The kids could learn from an individual like Del Piero just like they did from Cole and Bellamy.

    ReplyDelete
  59. yes !!! HELL yes! Having Alonso back would be brilliant, players around him would learn so much.. FSG dont get it, "you will not win anything with kids" ... :-@b2a08aaa032438b3c9faeacd9e013619:disqus  lol Fixated with money ball system, sell on fees and having match winners / experience seems to be a second thought from transfer activity to date. Senior player & fan power may sway BR to this if he was available but senior management (Ian ayre) needs to support this.
If reports are correct on BR wanting to keep Carra, it signals an Alonso deal could happen....

    ReplyDelete
  60. lol I agree Jason... good arguments. I think we will be in the Championship when european fair play rules start. Makes totally sense jason

    ReplyDelete
  61. LOL ... oops capslock... you nailed it there jason

    ReplyDelete
  62. Totally agree with you Carl and can still remember Jan Molby in the 1992 FA cup final v Sunderland, where he played a 40 yard magical pass which swerved both ways and was inch perfect.  Never seen anyone else produce such a pass to date.

Alonso for me is a no brainer... world class, still loves lfc, admired by all and no Rafa!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. How the hell will we be in the championship???
We are already making a profit or there abouts.  Other teams such as Chelsea and Man City are not. When the fair play rules come in we are not going to have to change anything, where as the other teams are.  We will be better off than other teams, so your Championship expectations are flawed.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I'm more confident when Jones attacks crosses into the box than when Reina does. Jones at least seems to get to the ball, whereas Reina seems to miss the ball completely on many occasions, relying I think more on receiving a free kick.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Xabi Alonso is the player high value but very worth to re-sign back.Let sign him with Benat Extrebarria.Let Joe Allen go to position attacker after can get both this players.Lucas is just can playing but not to amazing player that LFC having now. Why? Please look at record assist or goal scoring and leaking goal.CDM must tough and strong to protection our fortress.Henderson still unclear which position should he keep stay and playing.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Under FFP ALL clubs have to run at a near profit.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Exactly. Some people can`t see the wood through the trees Peter. We are setting ourselves up top be ready for FFP.

I think though Chelsea turned there first profit on the last set of accounts. Not 100% sure, tho. Man City were still miles off, and I imagine Man Utd are a way off, as their massive debt must be a drain with re-payment fees.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I still think he may feel he missed out. Just because you earn crazy money, doesn`t mean you don`t want others things from your football career. Winning stuff is usually one of them.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Jason, you are a fool, I don't know anyone as narrow minded as you, I have been reading your comments for a number of months now and to be honest with you, you know fuck all about football, and like most other posters on here know fuck all about how to run a business, you all want instant success (ie: some rich sugardaddy) like chelski or man shitty, just do me a favour and look at Barcelona, they won nothing for a long time and got there house in order (ie: brought through homegrown talent) look at the smelly mancs under bacon face (brought though homegrown talent) and look where they are now, give Fsg a chance (5 - 7 years) they have us on the right path, we don't need much and we will be up there, what they and the club need right now is support from us, the players need the most support of all, trust in them ffs, and they will repay us, remember 2005? Underdogs, but we didn't just make it to the final, we won the most nailbiting and exciting final in history, and why? Because we were all behind them, and every player on that pitch knew it (Milan thought they had fans lol) now we need to prove that we are the best supporters in the land and get behind the club you all claim to love so much.......... Ps no offence meant hahahah YNWA96

    ReplyDelete
  70. Hey Jason you have a short memory old son if it was not for FSG fighting tooth and nail in court the championship is where the club was headed.
They would have demoted the club as it would have been insolvent at that stage.
Sure the club can borrow shedloads of money and buy everyone then end up stuffed again your choice.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yeah, you've told me how you hate the manager of Liverpool and some of our players.

Still, I've asked you a question and you came back telling me that I want us to be relegated. Get real, Jason. Would you please be as kind as to show me the comments I've made where I suggest that I want us to be relegated. I don't come out and claim that you want us to get into administration.

And you probably should not claim that someone else doesn't take anyone's view. Have a look at yourself will you. I can take anyone's view, if it is well reasoned. That's why I've asked you for some explanation, as you gave no reason at all.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Thanks for reminding me.

I have said plenty of times that I know that FSG MAY want to sell us SOME TIME IN THE FUTURE. For a profit, of course. May I ask you how they would achieve that? By taking money out of the club and getting us relegated? Surely not. By saddling the club with debt? Or buy building for the future and making the club run self-sufficient? This is just getting better and better all of the time.

We can dream about some bored super-rich oligarch all day long, or of some philanthropic Scouse entrepreneur who happens to have money burning holes in his pocket if you like. But this isn't the case right now.

I for one don't know which I think is worse. Having owners who are super-rich and bored, hence look for a hobby, a toy, a real life game of Football Manager, or a bunch of businessmen who see an opportunity to raise the value of the club, but run it within it's means.

I don't think FSG where sacared of Kenny and Comolli. Well, it maybe scared them to finish so far off the Champions League places after spending huge amounts of money on some players.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Funny, because when Joe Cole's contract ran out in June 2010, we weren't the only club interested in him. How could that be when he's had a contract signed with us already.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Most clubs around Europe have to live within their means if truth be told. And in case UEFA actually implement their financial fair play rules, those few clubs who are funded from the outside will run into deep trouble.

Jason's point, by the way, was that I want us to be relegated. How come you can see his point? If we spend money that we don't have we may end up in administration, we may end up like Leeds. To make it clear once and for all time: I don't want us to be relegated. Therefore we should not spend money we don't have.

Jason can dream about owners who put hundreds of millions of pounds into our club all day long. He is free to make FSG an offer to buy the club himself if he is so unhappy with them. Fact is, they are our owners right now and they run the club within it's own means.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think Charlie is ridiculing Jason, to be honest. In another thread he described Jason's IQ as "brick like".

    ReplyDelete
  76. Lets hope that UEFA do the decent thing and stand by their FFP rules. On a side-note, the owners of Premiership clubs recently also agreed that some kind of spending control should be implemented.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I didnt pick up on that :) my original comment is relevant for Jason too

    ReplyDelete
  78. I get the impression that Jason has no interest in reasoned views whatsoever.

    ReplyDelete
  79. don,t you see the big clubs who want to spend money will get round it eg man city stadium naming rights, whats to stop them selling vip boxes for 50 million and buying them themselves, and when the fair play comes in we will be behind both manchester clubs 3 in london and newcastle on gate reciepts alone ,never mind the champions league money that some of the clubs will be getting if fsg, want to strive for the top they need to invest now ,otherwise we will truely be left behind

    ReplyDelete
  80. yes m8 fsg fought tooth and nail in court because they loved the club,or was it because we were undervalued and they saw a big fat profit, let you answer that

    ReplyDelete
  81. dreamer man utd make a big profit every year thats why they have loving american owners

    ReplyDelete
  82. uefa will do as there told the big clubs own them ,they don,t need uefa ,uefa needs them, the fair play rule was dream,t up by barca ,real, inter,ac milan,as a way to stop rich owners coming in and out bidding them for the best players ,they have the income coming in through massive grounds ,some thing we do not

    ReplyDelete
  83. Hm, I may be wrong, but as far as I can remember it correctly, Real Madrid and Barcelona both have huge debts that wouldn't be in accordance with FFP. And aren't AC Milan at least partly funded by a media tycoon? So they, too, may have problems as soon as FFP rules were implemented, right?

Don't get me wrong, I too wait to see for FFP becoming effective and don't trust UEFA one bit.

By the way, recently the owners of Premier League clubs also agreed on some sort of financial control (very much to the discontent of Man City).

Here's hoping that the endless mindless spending in our beautiful game will come to an end rather sooner than later.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I, too, have argued in the past that those who want to spend whatever they want will find a way to work around any FFP rules.

But I'd like to hear what you'd suggest for our club. Should we risk doing a Leeds by saddling it with debts in order to get back into the CL as soon as possible?

    ReplyDelete
  85. ye joking  chelsea made a loss of 93 million last season and abromovich refused 2 pay it off

  86. What I don't understand going by your argumentation is, why didn't they sell up by now. They are astute businessmen. Surely they'd have no problem at all finding someone who paid more than 300m plus the cleared debt, right?

  87. I believe that FIFA has said that they wont allow transactions to go through that aren't at arms length or market value.  Why are you so cynical.  Every comment with you is criticising or whinging about something.

  90. Wrong, Real have massive debts, and I think Barca might as well.

  91. Again not true. Last year they made 20.4mil, year before a loss of 5mil. How is this a "Big profit every year"?

Jason do you just make stuff up in your head to suit what you would like the world to look like? I don`t mean that to sound rude, but I see so many posts from you, which aren`t based on any truths or facts.

  92. This is true, but I doubt they will enforce that too much. City charged 400mil for naming their stadium ( I think around that number). That to me is way over the top. It blows any other naming right by about 100%, and City aren`t as big a club as at least 3 others in the prem alone. Yet the deal seems to have gone down fine.

The problem is, City can argue that the 400mil is a just figure, as in the next few years they will be the best football team in the world, and that will give them a massive fan base, so the figure meets it. It is all just guess work, as no one knows how any club will be in a few years time. We could charge 500mil to ourselves for naming rights, pro-claiming we will be better than city next year.

  93. When his contract comes up or if he opts to move before that I feel like Anfield would be his prefered destination granted BR (or whoever is managering us then) has common sense. But if Xabi comes back and puts in a good shift, do you think that he warrants being called a legend? Most articles note him as an "former anfield/liverpool hero". But he's in that awkward place between hero and legend isnt he cause he loves us and we reciprocate that feeling. No other foreign player active right now has that. Only 5 seasons with us and only a handfull of them amazing, but we love him just as well. Legend status or is that premature? Thoughts?

  94. I almost entirely agree with your post (everything bar the "you all want instant success" part). While those on here who shout loudest (may) want instant success, quite a few of us advocate that we spend within our means, even though it may take much longer this way to get back into CL recognition.

There is another fine example for slow but constant growth. Borussia Dortmund. And they've even hired a young manager who had won nothing (but promotion and subsequent relegation) before he joined them, but relied heavily on the youth players coming through their own system. Despite this fine example some fellow Reds won't be happy with our manager or the pace of our progress until a so-called world-class manager worthy of our club is put in charge.

  95. Think you are posing a very good question here. Here's my view. Truth is that he wasn't amazing during all of his time at the club, but he was very good nevertheless when he wasn't amazing. Much of his work has gone unnoticed, though. At the time when many claimed that we were a one man team (Gerrard) someone actually put in some effort and compared our results and stats for matches with and without Gerrard to the same for matches with and without Alonso (it may even have been this site, but I'm not entirely sure about it). The results were not only surprising for most, but confirmed what I had personally felt at the time. Alonso has had a more positive impact on results than Gerrard and his absence was felt more than Gerrard's, too.

Whether he can be called a Liverpool legend, I don't know. I leave that for others to decide. What I do know though is that he still is one of my (few) favourite football players on this planet right now and that he is, amongst Sami Hyypiä, my favourite Liverpool player of recent years.

  96. they will when they can make the most profit

  97. Could you give a more specific answer please. When will that be and how will they achieve that (most profit). By the way, what is your valuation of the club and, if it is say 50% above what they've paid, wouldn't it be better to sell for a 50% profit after 2 years and be able to invest in some other thing that brings profit than, say, sell for a 60% profit after 10 years?

  99. Who would have thought that again you would not wish to share your infinite wisdom with the rest of us.

You think what you think, fair enough, but you only share the tiniest bits with the rest of us. How could anyone know whether you are right if you never give the reasoning behind such bold statements as "the greedy twats".

I guess I am not the only one on here who would like to know more, as you can obviously see things that at least some of us can't see.
Until now, unfortunately, all you did when pressed for further information, was to either "lol", not reply at all or simply end the thread.

As I've said, you make very bold and strong statements and therefore portray yourself as someone with a well advanced view of things. All I ask you for is to share it with all of us. If you never do, some may start thinking that there is nothing to back your statements up and that hatred for some employees of the club is all that drives you on. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't ask you for more specific information if I thought like that.

  100. While my initial reply awaits moderation, I'd like to voice my disappointment about yet another evasive answer from you. I believe you can do much better.

  102. I guess that you know by now that the word filter on here is kind of strict AND that I don't tend to be uncivilised in the manner I treat others.

  103. I didn't get past the moderator because I quoted you, without substituting the "a" in "twats" with "@".
