"Liverpool made an enquiry" - Rodgers chasing €5m contract rebel. Worth a bid...?

The Agent of Lazio 6'3 centre-back Modibo Diakité has confirmed that Liverpool have made contact over the possibility of a January transfer to Anfield.

The 25-year old Senegalese star has been linked with the Reds several times over the last month, and in an interview over the weekend, Diakite’s agent Ulisse Savini told Calcio Mercato:

"It is true that Terek Grozny are very interested in the player",

"Liverpool have also made an enquiry, and we are only considering immediate solutions."

€5m-rated Diakite is currently engaged in a contract dispute with Lazio, and it seems an exit could definitely be on the cards, especially given a recent incident in October, when two of the defender's cars were torched, an incident rumoured to be the work of the Lazio 'Ultras', as retaliation for Diakite's contract stance. Responding to the incident, Savini said:

“The lad is obviously very shaken by what happened, not so much for the loss of the cars as the incident which was unpredictable and unthinkable. He immediately realised what was happening when he saw the flames from the window.

“I don’t want to think that the contract dispute could have anything to do with this. It must’ve been the actions of a crazy arsonist.”

Sebastian Coates reportedly wants to leave Anfield to get first team football, and given his shaky performance yesterday against non-league Mansfield, a new defender would probably be a welcome addition at Anfield.

Worth a bid?

  1. I have to admit I don`t know to much about this guy, and I aint a fan of judging by video, however as thats all I got to go on, and normally vids only show your best bits, I`m not sold on this guy.

A positive is he looks very stocky, and we have lacked someone like that for a while. I can`t see him getting pushed off the ball easy.

My concerns are he looks a little clumsy (this might just be cause of his size and not that he is clumsy), and some of those tackles esp the one when he went in from behind, could see a straight red in the prem, as we move more and more to non contact football.

I`m not so sure we do need another defender centrally right now, yes Coates may leave and has looked iffy, but A and S have first spots held down, it is on the left we need a new defender. Our back up for now is Carra in the middle, granted he isn`t the best anymore, but for this season, when money is tight, he will do. Maybe in the summer we can look at it again.

  2. Difficult to judge as I honestly don't know anything about him, but 65 league matches in six years doesn't exactly speak for him. From those statistics alone I assume the he won't oust Agger or Skrtel. With Kelly coming back from injury and Wisom, too, being a central defender at youth and reserve level, I'd rather like to see them given a chance than wasting money on an unknown quantity. If we were to sell Coates, we'd probably be better advised to sign a younger talent who may have just as much first team experience as this 25-year-old.

  3.  I think most defenders would've been shaky yesterday on that cow field.

  5. Agreed... Zanatos has a similar sense about the possibilities, we need to be careful, take our time, use what we have until the right player comes along... I think we are moving, as a club, towards a new way, maybe a way not so different from the old liverpool way, just a modern liverpool way. I will expect some glory days back within a couple of years and as long as we grow slowly, I'll wait a couple of years for the rebuilding, but we have to see the growing even if it's slow...

  14. Totally agree, Although i dont think southhampton will sell at the present.
Reportedly about to outbid liverpool for a defender in this window so i dont think they will be in the selling mood. but i wouldnt mind it.

  15. I understand we need defensive cover but do we really need it in the middle? i would look more to fullback instead. althought Robinson does look solid hes still ateast 2 seasons away from the first team.
Besides i dont see how this is a step up from coates? and when Kelly is back from injury and hopefully resigned maybe he would be a good option to move inside.

  16. wasn't this coates guy meant to totally trump phil jones from man utd, who joined the mancs roughly the same time coates joined us? i also get pissed off with the pronunciation of coates' name with the spanish twist to it- coates is an anglo name!

  17. A new defender welcome, yes. This one? No. He's been injured more than Harry Kewell, Owen Hargreaves and Michael Owen put together?

  18. Ermmm after years of Durk Kowt, I don't think you should be moaning too much of how a name is pronounced :-)

  19. Rather rebuilding slowly than trying to force it with a hand full of expensive signings who may then fail.

  20. More worried about the Suarez saga. The job of a striker is to feint, dribble, dummy and I assume cheat in order to get past defenders and the goalie.I also assume the job of referees is to watch them carefully.

  21. Diakite is quite a physical presence. However his history suggest he seems to be injury prone ( aggeresk). I'm sure we could find another defender. Vasco da Gama's Dede is quite a catch if I might say so.

  22. I am hoping for someone who is going tut pressure on Agger and Skrtel to lift their games and this Diakite is definitely not the man.
He will be made look silly in the EPL looks clumsy alright give me someone like Shawcross any day.
