Confirmed: LFC in 'talks' with Lazio star. Last Jan signing after Coutinho...?

The Agent of Modibo Diakité has confirmed for the first time that Liverpool are definitely tracking the Lazio defender.

As reported on Tuesday, Diakité's Agent, Ulisse Savini, flew to England to meet with LFC to discuss the possibility of a January transfer.

Speaking to de LaLazioSiamoNoi.it last night, Savini confirmed the meeting, and Liverpool's interest in the 25-year old. He said:

"Yes, Liverpool and Juventus are both following Diakité, and today I was in London for [transfer] talks, but I can't make any predictions right now. "

So there you have it. Unless Savini is lying (why would he?), Liverpool are definitely trying to sign Diakité, and judging from the the reaction from fans, the Senegalese star is not a popular target.

Earlier this week, Diakité rejected a new contract at Lazio, bringing to an end a long drawn-out dispute with the Serie A giants. Lazio owner Claudio Lotito had previously blasted the player for refusing to sign a new deal, suggesting that his decision had alienated his team-mates:

“He has made an absurd choice. He didn't exist on the football landscape before. I was the first one to notice him, and when he was injured I renewed his contract. Then he refuses to re-sign three times and with his best known teammates not agreeing with his choice, and he even wants more, asking for €1.2m”

The 6"2 defender has barely played for Lazio this season, and after rejecting a new contract, that is unlikely to change over the next six months.

His only option would seem to be a move away, and with Liverpool in need of defensive cover, a move to Anfield is seemingly on the cards, whether fans like it or not.

If LFC do sign Diakite, it won't be for big money, which is one silver lining. Claudio Lotito, Lazio's owner, is looking to recover €1.5m (£1m) for the player, which is well within the club's budget.

  1. Looks like the owners have paid out about £20m this window, not too shabby. The only defender I would like to see is a left back. Rather we strengthen our midfield or attack

  2. We need cover for cb, and he sounds like a good solution. for 1m I'm voting for him. If he'll show his abilty, maybe we'll get as good of a bargain as we did with hyppia? :P

  4. With Coates most likely sold this window, we need to replace him. A bargain for the asking price.
