LFC hero tells BR: Forget Sturridge & sign £15m 53-goal star instead. Agree...?

Liverpool are rumoured to be in pole position to sign Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge, and if the deal goes through, I imagine most Reds fans will be distinctly unimpressed. Anfield legend Steve Nicol is definitely not enamoured by the news, and he's urged Brendan Rodgers to go for one of the Bundesliga's top strikers instead.

In an interview earlier today, Nicol insisted that Sturridge is 'not proven quality', and questioned Liverpool's zeal to sign a player who can't get into Chelsea's team. He observed:

“Daniel Sturridge [is] a good player but [he is] not proven quality.

"He can’t get into the Chelsea team, so why do Liverpool think he’s going to come here and set the place alight?"

Nicol then urged the Reds to consider a bid for Borussia Dortmund's star striker:

“I’d be happy if Liverpool were being linked with Lewandowski. He’s got just over a year left on his contract and Borussia Dortmund would let him go".

Liverpool have been linked with Lewandowski a couple of times over the last few months, but although the striker admits he 'likes' English football, it seems that he has no real interest in leaving the Bundesliga right now. He told Sky Sports recently:

"It wouldn't influence me at all [if scouts were watching him]. I haven't got plans to change clubs. I have a contract with Borussia and I focus on that. I haven't had the chance to play in England but, maybe, one day. What I like about British football is that it is fast and hard. For sure it would be interesting".

Manchester United are also hot on Lewandowski's trail, as confirmed by his Agent, Maik Barthel:

"The offer from Dortmund is not enough and I can confirm there is interest from Manchester United"

If £15m-rated Lewandowksi has to choose between Liverpool and Manchester United then as long as the Reds are not in the Champions League, he's sure to choose Alex Ferguson's team.

In any event, is the 24-year old Pole the type of player who would fit into Rodgers' team? Could he form a good partnership with Luis Suarez? His stats are quote good, but he's had only one great season for Dortmund so far, and his games-per-goal-ratio has decreased after making the step up to the Bundesliga:

* 41 goals in 82 games for Lech Poznan.
* 53 goals in 113 games for BD so far.

LFCs season has been such a letdown again.Lets hope the news thats just been released gives the club a lift now that Sterling has agreed to sign a 5 year deal.Get the likes of Joe Cole whose smirking on the bench and Downing and Carroll off the wage bill and instead of Sturridge surely we should be going for Llorente and Hunterlaar who only have 5 months left on their contract. If Carroll starts to string the club along and refuses a permanent transfer to west ham just stick the guy in the reserves,iv no time for him or his attitude or his injuries. We can start to build again with the nucleus of Rafas players and once were rid of Hodgsons and the Kings players and their wages the future will look brighter. In the summer it looks as though Real Madrid and Chelsae will fight it out for Rafa but i still think there s a slim chance he could come back and bring the glory nights back that we no longer have since hes left.

  2. sturridge a good player but think his attitude lets him down, could be a great player and a good age and obviously wanting to come.
lewadowski would he be so keen and probably an unrealistic target.
don't think Rodgers can attract the players like rafa could for example.

  3. Would love Lewandowski, but even if he were to leave Dortmund not much chance he would choose us over other interested parties.

  4. Also, says a lot when more people seem excited by the fact that the Sturridge talks have potentially stalled than they did about us actually signing him.

  5. Sturridge wel better than him

  6. Nooooo. Don't agree!!!!!

    Great story though!

  7. Hope the sturridge deal caves in but sadly i think it will go through, another player BR has worked with in the past( borini, allen,) so many better options out there than this guy, his injury record is poor as well, will be gutted if he,s our xmas booster

  8. sturridge is not worth 12mil for sure. he is going to be on high wages and if he under performs or gets injured we will be in the same situation as Cole and Aqua.
We should look at south american players. I am glad contract talks have stalled. Jamie you should send out a vote. see how many would actually like him in the Red of Liverpool.
Rodgers should keep an eye on this site.

  9. Are FSG advising Rodgers as to what players he can sign? They must be young and they must have a potential sell on value for example. Is Rodgers even trusted with signing any more players? Allen & Borini £25 million, yet made no positive impact at all on the team. Who has valued Sturridge at £12 million anyway? Have both FSG and Rodgers already wrote the season off and we are already planning for next season?

  10. Liverpool is quickly becoming a team of amateur talent. Granted some of that talent are showing promising signs but a lot of the young players are not ready yet to lead Liverpool forward. We should not depend this much on the youth. Not if we are serious of actually winning any cups this season. If Rodgers has one fault it is that he relies almost too much on youth when all we need are few more experienced players. Daniel Sturridge is a great player and is certainly one to look out for in the future. I and a lot of Liverpool fans would have liked to see Rodgers for once pursuing a player that a lot of clubs really want like Walcott (same age as Sturridge yet a more experienced player), Hunterlaar, or even Higuain of Madrid (who will always be second fiddle to Benzema) or even Alexandra Pato (who at 23 is well within FSG age range of comfort). Pato is no longer a guaranteed starter at Milan and is open to a move.

These players except Hunterlaar are as young as Sturridge but are more highly rated. We can no longer compete for highly rated players in the transfer market anymore and it pains me how far we have fallen as a club. No marquee big name player wants us. We are stuck now shopping in the bargain basement buying players that are not really wanted by many clubs another term that comes to mind is "rejects." I think i would die and go to heaven if for once i wake up to hear that Rodgers successfully has landed a player that is openly being pursued by at least three top European clubs. That won't happen in the near future so this means we won't be competing in the champion's league or obtain a top four finish this season or possibly the next.

The only good quality about Sturridge is that he possess a little pace. He by far not the finished article and I won't call his goal scoring prolific. I think it is another error in judgement on our manager's part. I still support him but I don't think we have made the best choice of a striker when there are better affordable options available.

  11. Ill say it again. Liverpool was finished as a club the day we sacked Benitez. Nothing since has changed my mind.

  12. im not sure if you knew about our clubs move into the champs league positions for agents fees last week. yep, were top 4. so, i hope the reason why this has hit a snag is down to this. im disgusted the way the club has been taken the mickey out of for so long. if he doesnt want to play for us let him rot somewhere else.

    ReplyDelete
  13. You have to ask yourself what Rodgers sees in Sturridge, why he thinks he's worth the money. I mean that literally : try to work out what it is about Sturridge that has us so keen on him. It doesn't make sense for it to be as simple as "he's young and british". Rodgers isn't an idiot, the idea that us as fans can see something obvious but he can't doesn't add up. If we can see Sturridge with a potential attitude problem, injury issues, a selfish streak, there is no doubt that Rodgers can see that too. The man manages a PL football team, he's not some goon from down the pub with no experience or a low IQ. Thinking that Rodgers is making these decisions without being aware of the same things we can see so clearly as mere fans is just not logical. Everything you can say about Sturridge, Rodgers knows about it. How could it be any other way?

  14. Would really like Lewandowski i suppose we are dreaming if we think he is coming in January but the good thing is if he decides Liverpool later on is there is a spot in the starting 11 waiting.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Good player for club and country. I am impressed by him but i thinks its unlikely he will sign for us. He'll go to Man U.

    ReplyDelete
  16. We must definitely be seen as mugs by agents, we get bleached every time by these bloodsuckers, hopefully for once they,ll do us a favour by blowing the sturridge deal but i reckon the leech representing him will back down a little & another donkey will be added to our stable :(

    ReplyDelete
  17. Were dteaming if we think he,d join us at the moment, under rafa or even kenny to a certain extent we still had the prestige to compete for top players but cant see it now, very, very depressing

    ReplyDelete
  18. Unfortunately for Liverpool Lewandowski is like a pie in the sky and there is no chance we could convince him to join us without champions league football but still there are enough proven goalscorers in the market who Liverpool can realistically get but they have to make a move, for starters Ba would be a great choice.

    ReplyDelete
  19. absolutely, hes 1st choise striker at borusssia dortmund, a club that beats real if needed.
0we cant attrackt him, and hes to expensive!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. please not sturridge ,i would rather resign ngog

    ReplyDelete
  21. Borussia is passing much more quickly than we will in a year so he would fit in... And he's been great for Poland so I would say proven.

    ReplyDelete
  22. In fairness, if we end up paying 12 million for Sturridge and then another club goes on to sign Lewandowski for the same or less, people at Anfield should lose their jobs because they're obviously too stupid to learn from their past mistakes. We signed Downing when we could have signed Mata for less and we'd now sign Sturridge for the same money we could get Jelle Vossen or Lewandowski for. I'll be seriously annoyed if we pay any more than 5 million for Sturridge.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Sell Downing and let someone else pay the wages for Cole and we can afford Llorente and Pato- even the later one would want to leave. Imagine Pato Suarez Llorente with Sterling on the bench- cl football...

    ReplyDelete
  24. hey if we can get lewandowski, we should also try for messi and higuin.

    laughable chaps.

BR knows that sturridge isnt a world beater, but the guy is keen to prove he has the skills and would inject much needed pace in our team.

    ReplyDelete
  25. We cant get these players of the wage bill because as a club we where dumb enough to pay them inflated wages....blame the club not the players, the players where acting in there own interest like the club should have been...as for sturridge Liverpool have to be strong ...i for one feel players and agents approach negotiations with Liverpool thinking we are a soft touch....they think we will role over and you can tickle our belly well its time we started biting making players and agents thankful for what they get...if the negotiations are already hitting snags with sturridge we should pack our briefcases and wish him good day

    ReplyDelete
  26. Orme we cant unload these players as they are on mega wages circa 80 to 100 grand a week ( DON'T QUOTE ME ) im sure the club is trying to get rid but the fact is unless we pay a large percentage of the wages ( see lille) they are staying put..i keep banging on a bout this but i cant see it changing see Allen Borini and probably sturridge...but we are constantly paying over the odds for players thats why no other clubs are in for the guy...if he doesn't fit in ...which i don't think he will thats 12m and 60G a week on the bench. its like ground hog day...

    ReplyDelete
  27. I know, but speculations are getting louder we can sell/offload them, so I'm hoping...

    ReplyDelete
  28. the biggest mistake was to let maxi and kuyt leave..two very good experienced players who would guarantee goals at any level..personally i'd get carroll back till the end of the season and save the money for a world class striker for next season..carroll was showing some decent form at the end of last season but was bombed out because rodgers didn't think he fitted into the type of football he wanted to bring to the team..i think it's pretty boring, all short pass an' move but no end product..we seemed to be quite successful with big tosh years ago..maybe rodgers should try and change our pattern of play and give carroll a shot..what's he got to lose?.!!!

  29. And still warm the bench

    ReplyDelete
  30. If we go for Sturridge you'll have at least 3 examples of better players signed by other clubs for around same fee.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Players wages should be based on performance. The flat rate wage structure should be scrapped. Incentives and bonus payment. This will keep these overpaid and spoilt brats on their toes.
It is disgusting the amounts paid out for mediocre display we get week in week out. There is no fire in their belly's to play to win. Hunger to win games is what makes up a good team. But we certainly are lacking in that department.
Between, the shrink hired to boost confidence in players seems to be working out. So it seems the other way round.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Where does he warm the bench?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Maxi and Kuyt requested to leave. THey moved as they wanted more playing time. The big Fcukup was there was no replacements for them.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I dont think we will be going in for a central striker? BR seems to rate suarez in middle. Sturridge has got pace, and he has ability to cut in and score. i do rate him higher than sterling at the moment. if Sturridge can be made to play for team im sure he will come good. he has huge potential.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes, I don't see him going there- no way...

    ReplyDelete
  36. Why do you think we could not sign Lewandowski if we can put up the money for him?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Annoying actually... Him and Ince for 9-10 would'nt be that bad though, with a proven one...

    ReplyDelete
  38. What do we need in january?

    1. A 10-15 goal per season left or right winger or both: The only person that we have right now that can be describe as a winger is Raheem Sterling and the lad is good dont get me wrong, he can pass, dribble and has speed to boot but he does not contribute enough goals to the team which make him not good enough to play in the front 3 of BR`s 4-3-3 formation. The others that we have namely Shelvey, Suso etc are just make-shift wingers and they also do not contribute enough goals to play upfront with Suarez. The latter has to play along side quality wingers that will provide the goals and help him score.

    2. A playmaker: To play in the middle 3 of BR`s 4-3-3 tikitaka you apparently need
    a) A player who can recycle the ball well with accurate passes which we have in Joe Allen
    b) A player who is more concerned with the "dirty work" of the team: tackling, intercepting, covering for the back 4 etc, which again we have in Lucas Leiva.
    c) A playmaker who will have to link with the front 3 and help take the ball from the middle to the attacking players. This was supposed to be the job of Steven Gerrard but as we all know he is not up to the job anymore. So we badly need a new one.

So if BR really want his tikki takka to function he needs a couple of wingers and a new playmaker and they better be experienced players who will hit the ground running not young inexperienced potentials...

    ReplyDelete
  39. If you watch Sterling you should see that one thing that he cannot do is dribble. Time and time again he tries to pass that man on the wing and the ball comes away with the defender. He would be much more effective if he drew the man and then passed before the tackle dispossesses him!

    ReplyDelete
  40. It's unbelievable how many times I think he's got it right, and again he doesn't get through... Still only potential I guess...

    ReplyDelete
  41. QPR ready to pay majority of his paycheck-Joe Cole's... Still hoping...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Why would Rodgers waste his time reading a site that bashes his team and players. Wake up sunshine!

Sturridge for £12m is decent price for someone that can actually finish. Not my first choice either but better than what the club has now.

Have you forgotten the the club payed £35m for a striker that could barely play football for the reds.

    ReplyDelete
  43. No No No! Sturridge!!! Bring in Lioriente, Honda, Sanchez and Hunterlaar.
    Job done!!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Because he is one of the three hottest strikers in the BL playing for the best supported team in Germany, generally regarded as going through a golden age and still in the CL. My argument is not because we have fallen or anything like that, but because Dortmund are like the Liverpool of Germany. Very very passionate supporters.

    ReplyDelete
  45. i want to know know who the fcuk is running the transfer affairs for LFC,do we have any real intentions to play in the CL anytime soon, cuz if we're continue to be linked with average shyte players like sturridge then i expect us to be firmly be a mid table team

    ReplyDelete
  46. A definate no to Sturridge. I think its universaly agreed by most if not all reds that he's not wanted. Not a team player and doesn't score enough to be as cocky as he is. Now, in addition to a class striker in Jan (or something near class) I think we should try a cheeky bid for walcott. Seriously, think about it. He is in the exact position Xabi was in years ago. Manager has no faith in him till he has to use him due to injuries and then the player starts putting in amazing performances. Walcott knows he's been margianalized by Wenger and I would not be suprised if he would push a move through to us if we put a bid in. He's been their best player over there and is finally playing to his potential. Xabi obviously didnt want to leave us but the past treatment by rafa pushed him out and it could be the same with walcott. £8 is all that would be needed to stir the pot a little imo

    ReplyDelete
  47. Unfortunately the job is too big for BR at the moment. That is why he reverts to type by going for players he has worked with.ie. Allen,Borini, Sigurdson and now Sturridge. He will repeat the mistakes he made in the summer. Expect him to sign Danny Graham in January.

    ReplyDelete
  48. He has never worked with Sturridge he was manager at Watford! But Sturridge has worked with Ancelotti and AVB but some fans seem to forget that!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Look, we only have 1 fit striker at present and the team is lacking pace, we are not a champions league team which makes it harder to attract most of the players mentioned.

sturrige is an England international who has done well when he has played, he is a threat! something that we only have in suarez and lately sterling. The guy knows how to find the back of the net with the added ingrediance of pace, pace equals THREAT! you must never forget that.

Yes i know that he can't get into the chelsea first 11 but remember that chelsea are also trying to aquire Falco, that's the measure of it all really so we need to try and get behind the team and B.R.

We all would like THAT marque signing but we may have to wait and build the best way we can and if that means sturrige at this present time it actually not a bad signing considering he has premier league experience!!!
