Isco, Tello, Muniain and...Suso? LFC starlet gets some 'exciting' news...

It is three months into the season, and it's fair to say that Liverpool's results under Brendan Rodgers have not been the greatest. Whatever fans' issues with the new manager, one thing he has got right is the handling of the club's young players, and the rise of Andre Wisdom, Suso and Raheem Sterling is proof of that. For me, Suso is the most promising of the three, and his great form has now been recognised at international level.

Earlier today, Suso received a call-up to the Spanish U21 squad for their friendly with Italy next week.

It's the 18-year old's first U21 call-up, and he'll be mixing it with top quality players like Isco (one of Liverpool's transfer targets), Iker Muniain, Cristian Tello, and Gerard Deulofeu. Reacting to the great news, Suso tweeted:

"I'm really excited to be called up to the U21 team for the friendly in Italy!"

This is great news for Liverpool too; playing with technically superior footballers and being around the Spain national set-up can only be good for Suso and his development.

Rodgers also deserves praise for bringing Suso into the team and trusting him in big matches.

Raheem Sterling also received another call-up to the England team, and whilst these opportunites are good from an experience/development perspective, Liverpool legend John Barnes believes that calling young players up too soon can potentially be counter-productive. He told the Liverpool Echo:

"I am worried about the fans’ response and what their expectations are. To put a lot of expectation on a young boy’s shoulders is unrealistic.

"I’m urging other people not to expect too much, and I’m just hoping for it not to be a Theo Walcott situation, where he was taken to the World Cup as a young player and, because of the expectancy on him, his...career kind of faltered for a while"

Let's just hope Suso he doesn't get injured (!)

  3. While it is good news for Suso, I wonder what the point in resting him for league matches is when they play their bloody internationals during the season. My point is that the corrupt organisations that UEFA and FIFa are should get a grip and stage their matches outside of the major league campaigns.

  4. tbh we would all want that but its not realistic because if you were to stage matches outside of campaighns it would mea that they would have to be staged in the off season when players are supposed to be resting from week in week out football from august to may. As a result players would not get any rest and would be too tired too play in the next season leading to burnout and extreme fatigue

  5. Congrats to Suso. Some special talents in that Spanish u21 squad. If he starts, might give it a watch and see how he fits in.

To be fair, Rodgers either was going to play one of the older mediocre squad players who he barely has any faith in (Downing, Henderson, Cole) or go with a talented but raw youngster like Suso. So I'm not giving him much credit for choosing Suso. If we had better older squad players than what we have (even someone like Maxi or Bellers), I would choose them over Suso, who I feel isn't ready to be played so much in the league, despite his talent. Disappears too much for my liking, especially in second half of games but it is understandable, he is a puppy and we've all seen at Arsenal a few seasons ago as to how frustrating and inconsistent talented young players can be.

  6. Would be a great bench player. We need alternatives that could actually make an impact in second half, vs Chelsea especially. Hope he really sits out first 45 minutes...

  7. I think that due to Liverpool's very thin squad Rodgers should be protecting the young starlets like Suso, Sterling, and Wisdom from burn out. Even though it is a good thing that Suso is called up for Spain, and Sterling called up for England. I believe that our manager should make sure that these youngsters are not being exploited by the national teams. We need to be protective of our starlets and limit the call ups they get. We don't need them injured during international duty. They got a lot of time to play for their countries after this season. This season we need everybody to be healthy and available for Liverpool because we have a lot or domestic and cup fixtures to play this season.

  8. Totally agree on the exciting potential of the three players named. They are class, but I do think that bringing on the likes of Suso and Pacheco when we are already loosing is just putting additional pressure on them. I stand to be corrected, but surely it makes more sense to field your 'strongest' team from the players selected from the start of the match, hopefully establish a foothold, and then introduce the younger and less experienced players in the second half. Against Udinese, Swansea and now Anzi, we only brought the cavalry on when we were already behind. On Sunday Brendan will play his strongest team from the kick-off, so why doesn't he employ the same principal when we are involved in, shall we say, lesser games. I support the manager but I do think he should tone down the rhetoric when praising the team wholesale after what was, after all, a defeat, and secondly, reconsider leaving star players warming the bench before bringing them on and expecting them to dig us out of the mire.

  15. Jason, not sure what your problem is with regards to Allen. As I said before, he is playing as our defensive midfielder.

Now just ask yourself the following question, how will Suso fair as a defensive midfielder? Let me answer that for you, he will fail miserably as that is not Suso's forte.

What you do not understand is that Allen is not a defensive midfielder so until Lucas is back, Allen will be playing as our defensive midfielder. Do you get it? So until then Allen will have to continue doing the dirty work for our defence...

What is the job of a defensive midfielder Jason?

  16. to defend but when he dose go forward or attempt to pass forward he genarally fails look at his goalscoring and assists stats for the previous 2 seasons including one in championship they do not make good reading i look forward to him playing in a more attacking role then we can see his longer passing game he will probably have to play 30 yard passes back to the keeper and defence hes not a bad player but lfc class never saying that the number of people who post and are happy with allen and rodgers iam afraid the glory days will never return and why not play a defender in that possision any half decent defender can play a ten yard back pass plus they will acctually tackle

  17. Allen is a great footballer who plays a massive role in ball retention and keeping the play flowing. Just as Xabi did before him. If you can't see the talent the lad has then I'm afraid you can't really understand the game.
