Despite Luis Suarez's great form in front of goal this season, Liverpool are still struggling for goals, and acquiring a striker in January has to be the club's number one priority. Whether that actually happens or not remains to be seen, but there are plenty of options out there, and the latest goalscorer linked with the club is Lyon forward Bafetimi Gomis.
According to reports in France and Italy, Liverpool and Juventus are tracking the France international, who is currently Ligue 1's top goalscorer.
The Reds have reportedly scouted Gomis recently with a view to negotiating a January deal.
Gomis - nicknamed the 'Baby Drogba' - grabbed a hat-trick last on Wednesday against Marseille, and last season, he scored a stunning 7-minute hat-trick in the Champions League against Dinamo Zagreb, the fastest treble ever recorded in the competition.
In an interview after the Marseille victory, Gomis was full of pride over his hat-trick. He said:
"It's great, it's my first hat-trick in Ligue 1. That will always be engraved on my career. I will savour it"
Gomis cost Lyon €13m in 2009, and his current contract expires in 2014, which puts him in a strong bargaining position, especially as he's integral to Lyon's success. Indeed, his hat-trick against Marseille propelled Lyon to the top of the table, two points ahead of Paris St Germain.
One plus point is that Gomis chose to play for France instead of Senegal, which means if Liverpool signed him, the African Cup of Nations would not be a problem. However, it seems unlikely that the Lyon would let him leave in January. After all, why sell your top goalscorer when you're top of the league?
Worth a bid if he's available?
A great hat-trick, and 7 minutes is impressive, but it's not enough to top Robbie Fowler's 4 and a half minute hat-trick against Arsenal :-)

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Andy Carrol 2.0, the new improved version is more technically apt but will undoubtedly fail like Andy Carrol 1.0.
ReplyDeleteI'd say he's worth a bid, even if we're not necessarily in with a chance of signing him...although supposedly, Lyon are in financial trouble (hence them selling Lloris)
ReplyDeleteI wouldn’t get too excited about Lyon making him available. The 15-20mil they would get from him is outweighed by the money they would receive from potentially winning the league, europa cup, and getting back into the champs league next season. Some of you might be thinking "but they let go of Lloris!" Lloris is a keeper, gomis is a striker. Strikers score goals that win games that win the trophies that generate revenue. Lyon just can't afford to sell their top striker. TBH. there doesn't seem to be a whole deal of realistic targets out there for us who possess quality...let's hope come January that BR does a better job at persuading "better" players to join LFC than his post-match press conferences

ReplyDeleteBaby Drogba? he is 27 aint he! and he is sh!t, over priced, oh wait there...
ReplyDeleteHe is another average player, so no surprise were been linked with him
ReplyDeleteTo add to Alex Watson's post, Aulas said Lyon will look to sell two players in January transfer window and one in the summer, as they need to raise money. Partially down to the financial strain of their new stadium
ReplyDeleteWhy does anyone think we actually have any cash?
ReplyDeleteAnd if we do it will be for low profile signings like Assaidi.
Time to stop reading endless "gossip" aka "rampant fiction"
NO
ReplyDeleteThe bloke makes Trevor Benjamin look like Gerd Muller, so no thanks, already got a big lump with no technique on the books thanks, if they are feeling that frivolous to waste money on rubbish like Gomus(or should that be Gormless!?),then we really are in trouble.
ReplyDeleteNegredo (Sevilla) or Griezman( Real Sociedad) is a much better bet and we should have bought Nelson Valdez instead when Hercules went down in the Spanish League.
ReplyDeleteGriezmann is class!
ReplyDeleteGood shout
