Liverpool legend John Aldridge has called on FSG to 'massively show their backing' for Brendan Rodgers during the January transfer window, and urged the Liverpool manager to focus his attention on one particular player.
In his column for the Liverpool Echo today, Aldo conceded that he expected the Reds to be in a 'better position' after 10 league games, but refused to blame Rodgers for lacklustre results in the league.
Aldo also admitted that he was 'really happy' to hear Rodgers say that Liverpool 'need two or three players in January', and he highlighted Arsenal winger Theo Walcott as a must-buy for the Reds. He said:
"I would be happy to see Theo Walcott move to Anfield. He is still only 23 and is getting better.
"He has the ability to play anywhere in that three-pronged attack Rodgers favours.
"Walcott comes from a Liverpool-supporting family and would be welcomed by the fans".
Liverpool have been linked with Walcott several times over the last six months, and when discussing transfer targets in a press conference prior to the end of the summer transfer window, Brendan Rodgers described Walcott as a 'very good player'.
In an interview a few days ago, Rodgers was asked about Liverpool's interest in Walcott, and he responded:
"There is nothing to say [about Walcott]. He is an Arsenal player and it is all speculation about many players at the moment"
As Aldo noted, £15m-rated Walcott is a huge Liverpool fan, and he revealed this in an interview a couple of years ago. He enthused:
"I was a Liverpool fan, but unfortunately I wasn't born when the team had their golden era, but I enjoyed watching the likes of Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman when I was growing up. When Liverpool won the Champions League I went mad. I was shouting so loud I think I woke up the entire village where I live!"
Last month, Arsene Wenger publicly threatened to run down the 23-year old's contract if he refused to sign a new deal, prompting Walcott to address the rumours surrounding his future.
Walcott's existing contract runs out next year, and Rodgers has already contacted Arsenal about the possibility of a deal, but is yet to hear anything back from the the London club, who are allegedly 'willing to enter negotiations with both Liverpool and City'.
I'm not a huge fan of Walcott but his end product over the last two season was far superior to any of Liverpool's attacking midfielders:
* Last season: 11 goals and 10 assists in 48 apps (43 starts)
* 2010-11: 13 goals and 13 assists in 47 apps (34 starts)
The question is, would Rodgers play him as a striker?

No club will pay £15m for a player whose contract is up in a few weeks !
ReplyDeleteTheo's dad is mad on Liverpool, that is why Theo is a red too. I think this is increasingly likely, he must already have an offer from Liverpool via his agent?. If we can get him for £7m or so then why not?, he is still young but we also need another experienced striker. He can go on a free in the summer!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhy would Theo want to take a massive backwards step?
ReplyDeleteBased on this year's performance it's a no brainer! And I agree that he looks better when played in a striker position (Center) rather than on the sides. Would love to see him in our red.
ReplyDeleteI would be very pleased if we got Theo and Hunter! That would be crazy! At the same time I am sure Theo wants to play up front so either Sterling or Suso would have to make way, probably Suso. And if we got Hunterlaar and Theo then it would be Theo, Huntelaar and Suarez up front. Anyway, dream over.
ReplyDeleteIf we can get him for less than £10M then I would take him.
NOT GOOD ENOUGH. FOR LIVERPOOL FC!!!.
ReplyDeleteTheo Walcott has no footballing brain.
ReplyDeleteBlistering pace with little to no end product or final third quality.
Another MASSIVE WASTE of £15M.
Rather spend that £15Mil on Jackson Martinez and have a deadly striker finish games off for LFC.
Why do we throw hundreds of millions on weak English players as opposed to getting talent who will win us games and restore LFC to the glory that this club can reach?
If we could pick Walcott up cheap then he could be a good buy but isn't he demanding ridiculous wages? We need a striker who can come in and hit the ground running because anybody who watches us can see that we're just lacking goalscorers. I personally would rather see us put all our efforts into signing Huntalaar, a player that almost guarantees goals. We'll see who Rodgers fancies in eight weeks time...
ReplyDeleteTheo (~8M) & Huntelaar (~12M) would be the perfect additions to our squad.
ReplyDeleteSurely we have enough little people up front .
ReplyDeleteI don't really want to get into this club rivalry thing because I respect the way Arsenal play and go about things but Arsenal have a few problems at the moment. Despite a good start you are having a sticky patch and are sliding down the league, and your performance at the weekend was really poor. Yes I know Liverpool aren't in the Champions league and I know what position we are in our league, but anybody who watches us on a regular basis will know all we lack is a couple of players who can finish off the lots of chances that we create. Hopefully that will be addressed in January
ReplyDeleteYou are right actually, apart from pace he is a one trick pony at the moment.
ReplyDeleteBut has a knack to score goals. I think he needs to be played up front.
theo???? no, no, no, no, no, no, no!!!!!!! he is an athlete who arsenal are trying to turn into a footballer. how the hell he thinks he is worth 100k a week is an unfunny joke. good on arsenal for standing their ground. he is awful, if we sign him for what he is asking, we deserve every bit of stick for the amateur way we deal in transfers. we are a laughing stock already in football, this would only add more petrol to that embarrassing fire.
ReplyDeleteI want at least 2 attacking players...PRIORITY
ReplyDelete1 creative midfielder....second priority
1 full back either side as GJ can play anywhere.....not a priority
I would like Walcott and some people think Huntelaar will be good too though am not sure about him but would have anyone right now. Huntelaar, Walcott and Suarez upfront...amazing...!!!! Personally I think Isco and Demba Ba will be great too.
Get that porto midfielder if possible...Moutinho or someone similarly creative like Mata....
Common FSG...we need only 3 "quick fix"es....
ynwa
This is what I was thinking but I wouldn't like to see players coming in to stunt the development of the promising youngsters. We're out of the league Cup now, so when are the likes of; Yesil, Morgan, Pacheco, Robinson et al going to get a look in.
ReplyDeleteHowever, having said that, if Suarez gets injured or a ban, we'll be in the brown stuff up to our eyeballs.
Huntelaar leading the attack with Suarez & Walcott behind him, switching from left to right will surely ramp us up the league?!?!
overrated and over hyped player not worth a carrot.
ReplyDelete£15mil for Walcott... again it looks like we have been seen coming
ReplyDeleteEXACTLY.. couldnt agree more
ReplyDelete£7 million would be worth it.
ReplyDeleteWho could gazump us? Spurs might but might be a little controversial. City could for the hell of it but where does it end with them signing everyone......
i wouldnt give BR £15.00 to spend based on borini and allen
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of money you'd be willing to pay for players with only half a year until they can move on a free transfer.
ReplyDeletePlease buy world class we need about 5 players Damiao walcott eriksen balottelli
ReplyDeletethe last two??? hav u been on the piss?
ReplyDelete3rd priority a keeper and sell reina
ReplyDeletenone of them are worldclass lol
ReplyDeleteBawlotelli? Never...ever. Not worth the aggravation and waaaaaay over-rated.
ReplyDeleteBorini still has a chance. Allen is a great player and hopefully will achor the mid-field for a long time.
ReplyDeleteAgree...Huntelaar would be a great pick-up. We already have a Walcott...his name is Sterling and Sterling is younger, smarter, quicker, faster, plays well with his mates and plays with more heart.
ReplyDeleteCompletely disagree mate boring looks well off what is required for a prem striker and Allen does naff all other than pretty safe passing backwards to left and right backs
ReplyDeletePace can get you plenty of goals...just ask Owen
ReplyDeleteAt this moment in time, most of the players we got rid of over the past twenty years are more than good enough.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't finished in the top four in nearly four years, and we are currently in the bottom half and don't look like changing that.
Targeting players that are currently playing CL football, with a policy of paying midtable wages is ridiculous.
It's 2012/3, not 1981. WAKE UP!!!
i am afraid thats how its going to be under fsg silly bids for players[eg dempsey witch are never going to be excepted or the dross no one else wanted eg borini, allen no other club came in for them thats why there here
ReplyDeletei disagree mate walcott is coming to fruition will guarantee 10 plus goals as he will guarentee 10 plus assists. jackson martinez signed for porto, i dont think he would cost us 15 more like 8
ReplyDeletetoo right thats what am thinking, we would be in with a shout for the league with that squad, if we had suarez, huntelaar, walcott and borini as our frontmen we already have the meanest midfield in gerrard (experience) sahin and lucas (prime years) henderson shelvey and suso (young guns) we have the same mix with wide players downing (Exp), assaidi and sterling borini, and our defence although shakey at the min we have a brilliant pairing in center halves Agger Skrtel, with coates carragher behind, enrique left back johnson rightback, with kelly flanno wisdom and robinson, and if pepe gets his mojo back we should be among the best if were not we are cursed hhahah
ReplyDeleteIt's called keeping possession of the ball you moron.
ReplyDeleteThere are several top strikers available at reasonable prices, Huntelaar, Walcott, Demba Ba etc. Surely we can't cock this one up?, get out there and get it done FSG. We must be talking to their agents already which is totally legal, they must already have a short-list drawn up. Any would do me but Huntelaar would be ideal, he is guaranteed goals!!!!
ReplyDeleteaye but on a free transfer how many other clubs would come into the equation? infact on a freebie clubs would offer them higher wages and then FSG will have another excuse not to sign them.
ReplyDeleteMaxi was on a freebie but left simply because his wages were too high - im sure if they really wanted him BR could have persuaded him to stay.
im sure rafa had scouted mata but for some reason we preferred Downing?
ReplyDeleteWalcott at 15 million would be too expensive considering we blew 10 million on borini as well. Hunterlaar has the pedigree and has played upfront with suarez at ajax. Its a no brainer. Would he leave Schalke in the middle of a champions league campaign - thats the big question?
ReplyDeletethat was long way back man...rafa missed mata, modric, falcoa, et all due to bad owners....things are even worse now
ReplyDeleteHe is signing new deal with Schalke...super deal. 8mn euros per year
ReplyDeleteI thought Maxi basically left because he was left on the bench at the expense of less gifted players. You may be right that BR could have persuaded him to stay, but had to cut the wages as we badly miss the CL money for quite some time now.
