Liverpool legend John Aldridge has called on FSG to 'massively show their backing' for Brendan Rodgers during the January transfer window, and urged the Liverpool manager to focus his attention on one particular player.
In his column for the Liverpool Echo today, Aldo conceded that he expected the Reds to be in a 'better position' after 10 league games, but refused to blame Rodgers for lacklustre results in the league.
Aldo also admitted that he was 'really happy' to hear Rodgers say that Liverpool 'need two or three players in January', and he highlighted Arsenal winger Theo Walcott as a must-buy for the Reds. He said:
"I would be happy to see Theo Walcott move to Anfield. He is still only 23 and is getting better.
"He has the ability to play anywhere in that three-pronged attack Rodgers favours.
"Walcott comes from a Liverpool-supporting family and would be welcomed by the fans".
Liverpool have been linked with Walcott several times over the last six months, and when discussing transfer targets in a press conference prior to the end of the summer transfer window, Brendan Rodgers described Walcott as a 'very good player'.
In an interview a few days ago, Rodgers was asked about Liverpool's interest in Walcott, and he responded:
"There is nothing to say [about Walcott]. He is an Arsenal player and it is all speculation about many players at the moment"
As Aldo noted, £15m-rated Walcott is a huge Liverpool fan, and he revealed this in an interview a couple of years ago. He enthused:
"I was a Liverpool fan, but unfortunately I wasn't born when the team had their golden era, but I enjoyed watching the likes of Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman when I was growing up. When Liverpool won the Champions League I went mad. I was shouting so loud I think I woke up the entire village where I live!"
Last month, Arsene Wenger publicly threatened to run down the 23-year old's contract if he refused to sign a new deal, prompting Walcott to address the rumours surrounding his future.
Walcott's existing contract runs out next year, and Rodgers has already contacted Arsenal about the possibility of a deal, but is yet to hear anything back from the the London club, who are allegedly 'willing to enter negotiations with both Liverpool and City'.
I'm not a huge fan of Walcott but his end product over the last two season was far superior to any of Liverpool's attacking midfielders:
* Last season: 11 goals and 10 assists in 48 apps (43 starts)
* 2010-11: 13 goals and 13 assists in 47 apps (34 starts)
The question is, would Rodgers play him as a striker?
