Rodgers admits: I would love to sign this 'phenomenal' midfielder...

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed his admiration for one of the Reds' greatest ever midfielders.

In a Q&A on the official Liverpool FC website, Rodgers was asked which player from Liverpool's history he would sign if he had the chance. He observed:

"If I could sign any one player? The one player that stood out for me and that I used to admire is Jan Molby. I thought he was a wonderful midfield player.

"He controlled games, always had the courage to get on the ball, his passing range both short and long was phenomenal, and he could really dictate the rhythm and tempo of a game.

"Amongst the many, many wonderful players the club has had, I'd have loved the chance to have worked with him and seen that real genuine quality on a day-to-day basis"

Given his football philosophy and love of passing football, Rodgers' response makes a lot of sense. In many ways a historical antecedent of players like Xabi Alonso and Joe Allen, Molby would fit seamlessly into Rodgers' current team, and what a thrill it would be to see the legendary Dane playing alongside Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez.

Liverpool are well-stocked in midfield, so I'm not sure Molby would be needed at the moment. If I had to choose one player from the club's past then my default option will always be John Barnes. However, the current team needs goals, so in this specific case, I would have to go for Robbie Fowler in his prime.

Put Fowler in the current team (and last year's), and I have no doubt that he would score 30+ goals a season. Put Barnes and Fowler in the team and Liverpool would be Premier League champions (IMO)

Who would you choose?

  2. Why not Brendon just what we need another midfielder, tiki taki is ok with Messi etc, its just not the same with Borini and morgan.

  3. i think that just says we're only 2 or 3 quality players from giving the title a real tilt

  4. TORRES OR FOWLER

  5. Let us get something straight - it is the job of the Manager to make sure He has enough strikers before a new season, it wasnt a last day decision He had a couple of months. If lfc fans had 11 million to spend it would not have been on Borini.

  6. I see Boston Red Sox went bottom of the league on Saturday losing 9-2 to Toronto who were bottom. They know little about baseball either. I believe the fans are in uproar about it all.
If Man Utd had Best Law and Charlton they would win the league too. If Everton had Ball, Harvey and Kendall they would too.
LFC should be concerned about the future not the past and they are half a team from getting into title contention.

  7. Well said, as a club we always seem to find ourselves with a lack of strikers. I remember the runner-up season in 08/09. We only had Torres and a relatively unknown Ngog as back up once Keane went. We got away with it then. However, with Suarez misfiring, I don't think we will be so fortunate this time around.

  8. Some mad answers to Jaimies question. 3 league games in and there is uproar and anarchy! I would have Robbie Fowler too right now, scores from anywhere.

  9. Spot on. To rely on the final day of the window but not be prepared to pay over the odds was suicide and they should share the blame.

  10. Spot on. It's not as if Rodgers is the first Liverpool manager to not solve this problem. Rafa, Hodgson, Dalglish. All left us, at least at times, short of firepower. Maybe they don't see value in the market.

  11. Defeniteli Fowler
Is 4th best goalscorer in the ENTIRE Barclays Premier League history,
I think the above sentence speaks for itself

  12. Molby had a massive stomach. He was fat all over. But was still ALWAYS head, shoulders over every other player on the pitch. Left foot, right foot (drools). I still can't believe we dropped Molby at 31 for Jamie Redknapp who was no where near as good.

  16. I hope Raheem don't catch any injury as he has been called up for England squad. Too soon I guess? Rodgers didn't want him to play for U21, let alone Senior squad.

  17. Would be hard to pick from Fowler and Rushie for me

  18. I have one bad news. LFC are very serious about Llorente but FSG want him for free next summer. Rodgers want him in January or 12mn but FSG will have the final say.

  19. He wasnt called the Fat Dane for nothing, always played well unless the game was 100 mile per hour then he struggled a bit, not sure in the modern game Molby would of survived, nearest to him is Tom Huddlestone in size and passing accuracy though Huddlestone would be a poor mans Molby.

  20. if money is tight you dont want to waste it, and Borini is a total waste, never made the grade at Chelsea, had a degree of success in the championship with Swansea the year they went up whilst on loan. How can you justify spending 11m on him which was significantly more than Papa Cisse or Jelavic cost.
I seriously question the managers judgement on this guy as he had done nothing to make me drool yet and think he is a great player. He is average at best.

  21. huddlestone would be a poor mans adams lol

  22. He didn't do too badly in the Italian League either. He has played how many games in the Prem? And you write him off already. It may not have been you, but probably people like you, who've booed Lucas, and how that has turned out.

    Clemence

    Nicol Hypia Hansen Neal

    Gerrard Alonso Souness

    Dalglish Rush Barnes

    Bench: Keegan, Molby,Grobblaar,Thompson,Beardsley

Rogers needs to look at the tapes if you ask me cus no way would he get in a all time 11 start

  28. King Kenny and Rush

  29. We have a decent team at the moment but lacking teeth upfront, all we need is one or two world class striker/s coz Suarez is not a clinical finisher and Bornini so far has been very average .

  34. I see the major problem with this is that the owners are trying to run Liverpool like Boston Red Sox. American sport you dont have a relegation or other incentives, its win or nothing. Owners in the NBA, NFL, NHL & Baseball if their teams arent going to have a serious tilt at the title & there is no legit way that they can add peices to do so they clear their best assests, go young & build the team from scratch. Yeah your team bottoms out for a few years but then you come back have your title tilt and stay at the top for a while.Whilst this may work over there Im scared they are trying that with Liverpool, if they are I dont think they will realize the ramifications involved. Players will constantly leave for a "bigger club" as no one wants to wait for what may happen several years down the track anymore if they can have it now. I fear that we will end up becoming another Everton, Newcastle, Fulham or Stoke.

  35. I doubt much of the current team would get into an all time 11 simply because it is a very young team. KK team of 1988 is my perfect team. Barnes Beardsley and Aldo were superb. Aldridge doesnt get the credit he deserves - the man never stopped scoring and was sold way to early by KK perhaps to give Rushie a second chance!

  37. If I could have an ex-Liverpool player, regardless of the state of our squad at any given time, it would be Dalglish.

    Fowler would do though!
