Earlier this week, the Agent of Colombian striker Radamel Falcao insisted that it would take €100m to prise the coveted goalscorer away from Atletico Madrid. Such a massive fee seems a tad unlikely, but according to Liverpool legend Steve Nicol, Falcao would be worth every penny.
Discussing Falcao's terrific hat-trick performance against Chelsea recently, recently, Nicol lavished praise on the striker, nicknamed 'El Tigre' by Madrid fans. He enthused:
"There's nobody you'd rather have leading your team than him [Falcao].
"He's been the best in the world for the last 6 months, and at the moment, he's on fire. He cost them [Atletico Madrid] €40m; is he worth it? I think he definitely is".
Falcao's goalscoring record over the last few years is pretty formidable:
* 62 goals/6 assists in 77 games for Porto (2009-2011)
* Last season: 36 goals/5 assists in 47 games for Atletico Madrid.
Is this enough to make him the best player in the world though? Better than Messi and Ronaldo?
Falcao is one of the world's most coveted players, with Chelsea and Real Madrid reportedly topping the long list of suitors. However, according to Atletico President Enrique Cerezo, El Tigre is not leaving any time soon. He said:
"Falcao has clearly explained that he is happy and content at Atletico and will be here for four years.Everything is very calm, and he is not leaving"
We'll see. As the saying goes, 'Money talks, and bull$hit runs the marathon'.

Wish we could buy him (Know it wont happen with us stuck in Europa league) But i guess there is no harm dreaming about it!!
ReplyDeleteNice sentiment but i would happily settle for Samed Yesil starting for now!!!
ReplyDeleteWhy dream about transfer thats not gonna happen? But ya, he is world class. Never seen anyone with such 100% finishing success.
ReplyDeleteI rate him as good if not better than Ronaldo and Messi, as a goalscorer, but in overall play, I would rank him 3rd of the three. A serious player though.
ReplyDeleteSeriously quality striker. Leading the line. Messi isn't that player, so it's not s comparison. Falcao is the nuts!!!! £40m to buy him but when he leads you to titles and cup finals that would be recouped easy. Goalscorers are a premium. You can't be tight if you want a great one that would deliver straight away.
ReplyDeleteIf he costs that much And a player of sheer class will never wear the red of LFC for the want of cheapskate club owners FSG
ReplyDeleteI don't feel they are cheapskate as such. Let's look at our squad and their wages vs what they produce: Carroll £35m, a handful of goals and good performances and prob on £80k a week. Joe cole's contract is basically trade description act because he is on £100k a week and for what? Injuries, non show at lfc. Kuyt, maxi were let go because last season they were mainly subs- although they should have both been in starting xi- that's prob £160k a week there. Anyhow, that's the jist of it. There's still doni- Henderson- who are prob on £110k a week between them as Commoli was handing on the contracts like sweets. So I do agree with fsg that we have to offload a lot of players to reduce the wasted expenditure on players that don't warrant it. Oh don't forget downing either!! So hopefully with the £50m a year saved in wages they will try and sign quality players for the high wages instead if average players on high wages
ReplyDeleteno chance unless jk finds oil like the beverly hillbillies!
ReplyDeleteReally Sad because Rafa scouted him and was close to joining before moving from Argentina to Portugal in 2009 but the owners weren't willing to fork out the mere 3m asking price!!! I remember at that time we were strongly linked in all the top media sources and I even bought it was a done deal but can only find the ones below...

You shouldnt have started with 'steve nicol said:'. I instantly switched off. The guy is a grade a idiot.
ReplyDeleteWe spent 5 millions less than that sum for Carroll.....
ReplyDeletefrom the link above i cold now see that we 've been missing on players with exeptional qualities, just few thousands of dollars LFC greedly refused to add up to sign FALCAO ask price of just $4m on such a goal-father striker.Infact the likely incident is that of Dempsey who could make things happen especially in a seemingly difficult situations we found ourselves against Arsenal.HOPE Rogers is taking note of all these repeated (what look like greediness)mistakes, and ROGERS shld stop saying he doesnt xellent striker,no team can will coveted trophies without a special player to convert chances to goals.
ReplyDeleteI presume ol' Angry Steve means 'best centre forward', not 'best player', no?
ReplyDeleteQuality and deadly finisher. Love how composed he is in front of goal, especially with some of the cool finishes he does. Makes it look so easy, when it isn't for most strikers, to finish in the manner he does.
ReplyDeleteCheapskate? You ignorant twat. How many owners ploughed in 70m last year and 25m this year? You epitomise all that's wrong with football fans.
ReplyDeleteIt's easy to make those kind of arguments as clubs like Liverpool are linked with EVERYBODY - that doesn't prove that the manager or club were ever serious about attempting to bring a player in.
ReplyDeleteJust look at how many 'done deals' we were supposed to have pretty much wrapped up in the last window alone!
I would rather have Messi though.
ReplyDeleteYou are no Liverpool fan!!
ReplyDeleteRafa did want him but H&G wouldnt give £4m for him
ReplyDeleteImagine if Kenny splashed the funds for Falcao instead of Carrol...Santi instead of Downing....Michu instead of Adam...
ReplyDeleteNo not as good as Messi or Ronaldo but a way better buy than Carroll even if Carroll was half the price.
ReplyDeleteImagine all the people, living for todayyyy...
ReplyDeleteYep. If Rafa had his way Liverpool wouldn't have wasted money on his 3rd or 4th choices and we may even have had David Silva, Daniel Alves, Mata, Jovetic amongst the plethora of talent he spotted first before other clubs sealed the deal. All these players he spotted shot up in value surprise, surprise!
ReplyDeleteWhen he was managing Valencia one of his main gripes with the owners was when he was chasing Drogba. Unfortunately the owners did not sanction the move.
