During the search for Kenny Dalglish's successor, FSG approached several managers about the possibility of taking over at Anfield, and one of those on the short-list was Ajax/Barca legend Louis Van Gaal. The Dutchman confirmed on Friday that he'd held talks with Liverpool, but FSG ultimately went with Brendan Rodgers. Was this a good idea?
In his first press conference as manager of the national team, Van Gaal - one of those rare managers who has won the league title at four different clubs - revealed:
"I had a lot of chances to sign with other clubs, but I've only spoken with Liverpool about a job. Only Liverpool came with a plan that I liked, because I've never worked in the Premier League and I always wanted to become champion in England."
Did Liverpool make the right choice ignoring Van Gaal for Rodgers? I conducted a survey on the site a few days ago asking that question, and the result was emphatic:
* 5700 people (approx) took part (So far - it's still ongoing)
* 69% of participants voted for Rodgers.
That is a strong vote of confidence in favour of Brendan Rodgers, and given everything we've seen since he took over, I have no doubt that FSG made the right decision.

Creeping closer to that magical 6000 figure, eh JK?
ReplyDeleteI think we needed a plan with a young progressive manager so I am more than happy with him. Will give him the time needed. Van Gaal is a great coach though and his track record proves it....now if just could sneak in one more winger...... :)
ReplyDeleteI think he is the right man for the job and I just hope he is given time and space to do what he feels is right for the club and I am sure the owners will do that as long as us fans are patient. Good article Jamie as it's interesting poll considering BR has come out and said he feels he has to win the fans over.

We'll only know in a few years if they got it right. Maybe even 5 years. Hard to predict, Van Gaal has never managed here so maybe he would have struggled like Scolari did?
ReplyDeleteThe thing is Van Gaal has been there and done it and knows how to do it, up until last season Rodgers was relatively unknown, i think rodgers has potential but i would have liked to see what would have happened next season as that shows its not a 1 season wonder, i hope he succeeds i really do, i just dont want us to have made a rash decision like some of the 1 season wonder big money buys we made, but all we can do is give him time and hope FSG got it right, but the signs are promising so far :)
ReplyDeleteI'm more than happy with Brendan. Fans need to be patient I guess it has some similarities with Shanks appointment in 1959.
ReplyDeleteNo matter how much as a Liverpool fan I dislike or hate ferguson ... I can compare BR with him .So I think BR have a potential to become new fergie in Premier League.
ReplyDeleteSave Agger !!!! Let Adams & Henderson go !!! Give Carroll, Downing & Cole one last chance to prove themselves. Lastly - Get Dempsy & Gaston asap!!!!
ReplyDeleteOnly time will tell.
ReplyDeleteAgger has already said that he would love to stay at LFC. If he is sold it will be done by FSG and our loveable manager.
ReplyDeleteIF Agger is sold, ...........JUST WAIT TILL CHRISTMAS GUYS JUST WAIT

BR has my vote over Gaal as he has EPL experience, having served in Chelsea and Swansea. He has managed to introduce a new playing style for Liverpool instead of the traditional "long ball" and making full use of the existing players' ball skills. This is a long way off from Dalglish's "scared to lose" or "a draw is as good as a win" tactics which saw him placing too much faith on the "gang of four" & the benching of Kuyt, Rodriguez and potentials such as Sterling. BR's the man to bring us back to the top 4!!!!
ReplyDeleteFurgie won the euro cup before he became scum manager, BR has won nothing in his career except promotion into the prem so you can't compare them. I like BR, he is going to be class! Every manager has to have a lucky brake and this is BRs, modern ideas, media savy and a guy who comands respect. So far so good!!!

ReplyDeleteRumour has it that Alonso is stalling on a new contract. Any possibility of him coming back? He is a LIverpool fan. I hope he does next season. It would be fantastic. Wishful thinking perhaps?
ReplyDeleterodgers can bring long stability to the club, we need to be patient
