Last season, Liverpool legend Alan Hansen regularly criticised Chelsea defender David Luiz, and at one stage, he claimed the Brazilian was 'so bad it's embarrassing', a criticism that incurred the wrath of former Blues boss Andre Villas Boas. Well, it seems that Luiz is just not popular with former Reds players, and Steve Nicol has joined Hansen in slating the defender.
Discussing Chelsea's Community Shield defeat against Manchester City on ESPN last night, Nicol expressed his dismay at Luiz's performance in the game. He scathed:
"He [Luiz] showed us again today that he hasn't matured one bit from last season.
"Your centre backs have to be cool, calm and collected under pressure. This guy is none of that.
"He's a loose cannon, and he'll give away needless penalties and free kicks. You just can't trust him".
There's no doubt that Chelsea's defensive performance is becoming worse with Luiz in the team (a player who cost the Stamford Bridge club €25m):
* Last season (Luiz's first): 46 goals conceded in the league (1.6 per game)
* 2010-11: Only 33 league goals conceded (0.8 per game)
Chelsea's defensive solidity has deteriorated even more in pre-season, with Roberto DiMatteo's team conceding 13 goals in 6 games (2.1 goals per game).
Let's hope this continues into the new Premier League season :-)

He awful :S has no position play, they shud just put him into midfield he good with the ball an can score brilliant goals :-)
ReplyDeleteHe's a right back, it would be the same if Glen Johnson played centre-back too.
ReplyDeleteLooserpool are a waste of a club and team....who gives a £uck what their followers think...have a look in the mirror at the useless players in your own club.
ReplyDeletehow exactly do I do this? if I look in a mirror I see me, should I stand Spearing and Adam behind me first? no wonder you support Chelsea
ReplyDeleteYes, his performances have been so bad that it won Chelsea the Champions League. I say bring on more bad performances, Luiz!
ReplyDeleteJaime:Quote: Your C/B has got to be cool , calm, & collected under
ReplyDeletepressure,This guy has none of these attributes,if i had not known
who Nicol was referring to, i would have sworn it was Carragher.
Who gives a chit what Nicol has to say, ? (apart from yourself).
ReplyDeleteWho cares what some loserbore bindipping has beens think. Enjoy your slide into oblivion
ReplyDeleteLuis is a lil bit like Coates in the back.Really shaky sometimes, but he has some highlighter type goals in his locker. They need to be more consistently better on the defensive side IMO. Good thing we started Coates at a young age, he has the time to become better.
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell did he contribute during CL nothing.
ReplyDeleteThats a shocking effort at a play on words. 'loserbore?' surely most people say 'loserpool!' (still bad but at least it sounds slightly like Liverpool. 2012/13 Liverpool played 2 won 2. Chelsea played 1 lost 1. Long may it continue.
ReplyDeleteAs for Luiz, he isn't shocking, but he does have quite a few mistakes in him and noone can argue that. However i think Cahill is quality, and along with Terry all three chip in with goals aswell. Could be a good season for you lot. Another good one eh? What will that be? About 8 good seasons in over a hundred years? And some would say you came out of 'oblivion!'
Love all the oldies chipping in with so called insightful comments....maybe they should concentrate on how poor their beloved Looserpoo have actually become over the past 4 seasons .... and let Chelsea worry about themselves
ReplyDeleteDavid Luiz is so overrated. And Chelsea paid a huge sum for him as well. He lacks concentration and composure and that are the key skills a good defender needs. Still young I guess but at this level a defender can't afford those kind of performances or mistakes.
ReplyDeleteLove the hair though!
Indeed so should you Sir.
ReplyDeleteI dont understand what fans of other teams are doing on this site or worrying what we are saying about them.I have never, ever, vistied other teams fan sites, MANURE chelski, etc. I dont care what they have to say because their opinion does not matter to me.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. Something about Liverpool ay!
ReplyDeleteit makes our signing of Carroll, Downing and Henderson seem so much value for money when I watch Luiz and Torres Play !!!!
ReplyDeleteDont really pay much attention to Steve Nicol except when he is quotes on this site. Great footballer that he was I find him difficult to listen to as a pundit as I dont appreciate a lot of his views. However I agree with him totally regarding Luiz he is definately out of his depth in the Premier League and I think a very very average footballer
ReplyDeleteBrilliant footballer, deplorable centreback. He should be played as a leftback - his pace, ability to bomb forward and the goals in him suit him more to that kind of role rather than one that demands discipline and a cool head.
ReplyDeleteAh, the "your mum" approach to debate. Genius.
ReplyDeleteREALLY???? you got some serious issues then, Luiz got more goals then Henderson and Downling put together, Downing couldnt even manage 1 goal or 1 assist in a whole premier league season...
ReplyDeleteder I thought you southern boys were educated articulate. In my post did you notice the exclamation marks (lots of them) after the word play. What would that suggest about my post.
ReplyDeleteSome would say that indeed, some would also say Liverpool remain competative, both would be wrong. As for the lost games who really cares about pre season and the charity shield.I see you're reverting to the old histoooreee chesnut, you can have your histoooreee we,ll have the future, hows that?
ReplyDeleteyaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwnnnnn,
ReplyDeleteSorry Rob ya lost me.
ReplyDeleteI didnt mention OUR history. Or historee. I mentioned YOUR history. Not historee. We also seem to be able to beat yous united and city. So we must be competitive mustnt we???
ReplyDeleteI think the Liverpool has beens, or in Nicols case the never was, have got the idea of mind games slightly confused. Mind games are meant to give you an edge over your rivals so i cant understand why they are attemptig to unsettle Chelseas defence when a dig at maybe Fulham, Stoke or Everton would do more for there top 10 aims
ReplyDeleteClearly.
ReplyDeleteyou mean the millionaire loserbore bin dipping has been?
ReplyDeleteother non Chelsea fans!
ReplyDeleteyour an idiot! who mentioned history? and we aren't competitive? like i said idiot! what part of Chelsea were you born in then?
ReplyDeletehe's got all the skills and attributes but doesnt have the mentality will take a couple of years to see the best of him...
ReplyDeleteYeah he's so bad that the best team in the world (Barcelona) are always enquiring about him & talking about him replacing Puyol.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Hansen should just keep his opinions to himself for a change. It's pretty clear that David Luiz possesses all the abilities to be one of the top Centre Backs in world football, he just needs to gain experience and improve his decision making. Positive criticism from Hansen might be a good change to his constant slating of players.
ReplyDeleteKanwar should rename this blog "Something Else Steve Nicol Said to be Controversial and Keep his Job on ESPN"
ReplyDeleteYawn.
i think hes a great player at times, but yes is a liablility, but aint most great players at times. skrtel has been terrible some times has had one good season, clashing heads twice with carra etc etc. id rather have luiz
ReplyDeleteIndeed .. But it begs the question what we on a LFC website are doing discussing a Chelsea player ??
ReplyDeleteI for one, and I don't think I'm alone, am sick of reading about what 'Liverpool Legend Steve Nicol' has to say .. It's bad enough when its regarding Liverpool matters but I think we should be spared his views on matters totally unrelated to the club.
Why are we bothered he's not Liverpool player if he's crap all the better for us play him every week as far as I'm concerned
ReplyDeleteRival fans are welcome here, and I don't understand why people waste time complaining about it. If rival fans want to discuss football in a civil manner then that's fine.
ReplyDeleteRe Steve Nicol - he was a fantastic player for LFC, and he's entitled to his view just like you or me. I always find it mystifying when fans slate ex-players for having an opinion. I guess it's okay for you and others to have their view, but Nicol can't. Why? Because his views are different to yours?
luuuuuuuuuuuiz!
ReplyDeleteWhat is the fascination with everything Steve Nicol says on this site. Yes the man was a good player in a great team I very much enjoyed watching as I grew up but he's been sunning himself 3500 miles away from the English game taking easy money for a long time now.
ReplyDeletePlayed in the CL recently?
ReplyDeleteNo seriously. If your gonna be smart at least explain. I gave a clearly constructive reply in which i wrote about Luiz. Whereas what i replied to was clearly more like a 'your mum'.
ReplyDeletechelskie are shabite jabust a gabang of cabock sabuckers so go and fabbuck your sabistaber you fabukin hillbilly
ReplyDeleteNot the last few years-does this mean we're not competitive? Oh, now Chelsea have won it there is only one competition or? I dont understand the point.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair Nicol's not the only ex-player to slate him, or did nobody watch MOTD last season!
ReplyDeleteMy point is I believe competative teams play in the CL, I see you got off to a flyer in the league, how competative was that? Good old Stevie Clarke and Lukaku, I love it when we win by proxy.
ReplyDeleteIf in doubt, quote Steve Nicol or Gary Gillespie in a desperate bid for hits!
