Breaking news: Joe Allen signs for Liverpool on 'long-term' deal...

Joe Allen's transfer to Liverpool has become one of football's worst-kept secrets over the last few weeks, and now it's official: the Midfield maestro is now a Liverpool player.

Reds manager Brendan Rodgers revealed last night that Liverpool had a 'agreed a fee' for Swansea City midfielder Joe Allen, and it's likely to be in the region of 15m, which is figure required to activate Allen's release clause.

Well, things apparently moved very quickly over the last 18 hours as Allen today confirmed the transfer, first via his Twitter Account (veracity disputed, but I see no reason to believe it's not real), and then with an official statement. He enthused:

"I feel incredible. Everyone knows the history of this club, it’s a massive club, and I’m delighted to have joined. The passion that people here have for football is something I share and I want to be part of that. I’m looking forward to being part of some great years ahead for Liverpool Football Club"

Allen was spotted in Director's Box at Anfield during the the club's 3-0 Europa league victory over FC Gomel, which kind of gave the game away:

Joe Allen at Anfield

After the conclusion of the deal, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers spoke of his delight at having Allen at Anfield:

"I'm absolutely delighted that Joe has made the decision to come with us on this journey. Joe is a player whose profile will fit perfectly with the ideas of this group. His ability to control and dominate the ball is an important ingredient in our attempt to gain success on the field.

"Joe has had a fantastic education at Swansea City and will now begin the next chapter in his exciting career, and I wish him all the very best in what I'm sure will be a long and distinguished career here at Liverpool".

With 91% accuracy last season, Allen was the 6th best passer in Europe, a mere 2% behind Barcelona's Xavi.

This is a fantastic signing IMO :-) And as Michael Laudrup said the other day, Allen is definitely 'a level above' several of Liverpool's other central midfielders.

With Lucas and Allen almost definitely certain starters, the death knell is sounding for the likes of Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson. Good squad players to have, but not starters week-in, week-out like they were under Kenny Dalglish.

Having said all that, it's questionable whether Liverpool actually need Allen. A great passer of the ball he may be, but it's hard to see what his function in the team will be. Short-passing and keeping the ball is one thing, but what else will he bring to the team apart from that?

  13. Yes, it is his. He's followed by Danny Graham, Ashley Williams and several other Swansea players, so why would they follow him if it was fake? Don't you think they'd be able to check?

  18. good signing . but big concern is that we have still got reina in goal .only two shots to save last nite . one was pushed back into the middle of the area .the second he flapped at it and just about got it round the post .he will cost us again this season !

  19. That's a fake account... Borini doesn't have an account according to @Liddlepool:twitter no way he made it just when he's about to be a reds...

  20. TThe Joe Allen twitter account you've used as your source has only just been set up and had only tweeted 4 times by the end of the Gomel match. Highly unlikely it's real but I do believe he is all but officially a Liverpool player.

  26. Last nights game was great. Style, flair, aggression... Wow! - Gomel never stood a chance! Great goal by Johnson, what a game by Stevie showing he's still got the goods! Now Allen to tighten things up in midfield and make the team even more fluent. The other teams must be getting a sick feeling in their tummies... The Mighty Red Machine reborn!
I'm tipping that we get a lot of clean sheets and a lot of goals this season. Awesome stuff... much praise and credit to BR!Ynwa!

  28. it's a fake account that only started the other day

    ReplyDelete
  29. I disagree... Reina is quality between the sticks, he has his bad moments, but it's mostly down to poor defense. His distribution is phenomenal! The reds would be hard pressed to find a keeper better suited to our new style of football.

I remember when the spanish twat was still playing for us... Reina... Torres... GOAL! expect more of that!

  30. Pepe is one of the best in Europe and he has passed his bad patch... hopefully he will again claim the golden glove this season... out of 7 seasons, he has claimed 3 golden gloves dear

    ReplyDelete
  31. The England cricket players allegedly didn't know if KP had a twitter account or not.

It just seems coincidental that he would set one up at this time. Also he apparently confirmed this 5 hours ago and indicated he had signed subject to a medical yesterday. Odd that no mainstream outlet picked that up.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The account was not set-up yesterday! Where do you get that from? It was set-up over a month ago, and that can be verified here: The account hasn't 'only just been set up'. Did you just pull that out of the air? It was set-up 1 month and 3 days ago. You can check that here:

    http://howlonghaveyoubeentweeting.com/

I see no reason not to think it's real. Prior absence of tweets is not proof that the account is fake. Perhaps he isn't a tweeter, and only tweeted now because he's massively excited.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Like he was our only problem last season?! He is a world class goal keeper during his time with liverpool, last year was a hard time for the whole team. I am sure he will come good this year especially if we get to keep our two central defense fit through the season.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yes, he's a huge liability.  Over the course of the season he'll cost a lot of points again. No wonder Barcelona fans were so delighted when he left!

  39. maybe... but i feel like I witnessed one of the best attacking displays I'd seen in a long time! Could have been 10-0. Gomel seemed to be quite defensively organised last week, hard to break down. They looked a team with a bit of venom, last night they we're completely dominated even though they were compact.

I watched every game of the friendlies in america also...I could definitely see flashes of brilliance and a definite style and theme the team were playing to. last night we witnessed that in serious force. I only see improvement to come really.the addition of Joe Allen will further reinforce what's been done already. It's my prediction... I've been wrong before... but maybe you'll be the first to say I was right... if in fact I am of course ;)

What planet are you on? Do you really think that any other keeper would have affected our league position one iota?! Don't give up on a LFC player after a couple of average performances! Be a "supporter" ... The opposition fans are the wingers and underminers!

    ReplyDelete
  43. It was set up a month ago though wasnt it?

  44. He has all the qualities which Luka Modric has. On top that he is British. I think he is worth the money Liverpool paid.

    ReplyDelete
  45. An excellent purchase and a huge step up from henderson, adam and spearing. tick tock tick tock..keep that ball moving like a rolex keeps time. welcome joe, and long may this marriage last.

  48. Welcome to LFC Joe. I hope the the short journey from South Wales doesn't become too much for you to cope with. Unlike another Welshman, who has just departed the club.

  49. I like your optimism, makes a change from all the negativity I see on LFC forums.

  50. 3rd choice for spain !! one of the best in europe my arse .won all kinds of medals with spain and never played a game !!!! shit on crosses .gets beat at near post all the time.granted his kicking is good but a goalkeepers job is to use his hands and make saves he doesn t .wba at home enough said dear!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. The team played with no hope, so it affected him, so what? If the team controlled the ball more often and if Jamie didn't play, yeah, it wouldn't look that bad for the goalie.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Oh Martin and Billy, it was Jamie who cost Rafa his job, go and take a look at Rafa's final season, Jamie did nothing. Most of the goals came from his side. Oh, wait a minute, can't blame an English legend.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Well said!! Our fans are fast becoming the the most negative, moaning, whingers in the country. It looks like the fans whipping boy for this season will be Charlie Adam, if he doesn't move on. God help him if he stays, as our so called fans have got the knives well and truly sharpened.
Whatever happened to YNWA?? I see very little of it these days.

    ReplyDelete
  54. he was, if you look at the mistakes  he made and goals conceded he must have cost us 20 points. but last season was the exception not the rule

    ReplyDelete
  55. welcome Joe lets hope you live upto the hype you seem to have become an overnight legend

    ReplyDelete
  56. Would'nt it be nice now if Lucas would f**k off , clubs are queuing up to buy him , he's that good ! ! !

    ReplyDelete
  57. Not convinced this is an essential signing, particularly considering the alleged price, the number of centre mids we currently possess, seeing the way we played against Gomel and considering that there are 3 other positions that should have been prioritised first (forward, right/left wing and Left back). However, I will say that Allen has grown on me and I do think he will aid Rodgers in establishing his footballing philosophy.

What Rodgers should be targeting now is a game changer, like Suarez. Successive LFC managers have failed to do this. No doubt football is a team game, but you always need a player who can unlock defences with a bit of trickery.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Kirk Dale, would be nice if you keep your stupid comments to yourself as Lucas was the problem we went backwards last season. The boy has come of age and has matured in the centre of the park. He outplayed yaya Toure last year so why the f...k should we sell him?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Unbelievable. Anybody who still criticises Lucas knows f..k all about football. He is one of our best players now and was very badly missed when he got injured last year.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Because he's shite ! You might not understand or get football , but what bit of my first sentence don't you get ?

    ReplyDelete
  61. £15m is high, but his wages are comparatively extremely low. He'll be costing the club around £2.3m less a year than the likes of Henderson or Adam, at least for a year or two until he gets a Suarez-type pay rise.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Does that mean Valdes is rubbish also but a bit better than Reina because he is the 2nd choice keeper for Spain.

  63. Welcome to Liverpool, Joe. Great signing BR. Our starting XI just needs one more addition now...

  64. more heavy hands with your message deleting huh? I disagree that its his twitter page and you delete the message? Fuck you JK you sack of shit. Its amazing to see how many people out there cant stand this site, and for all the reasons ive ever mentioned. you are biased and trigger happy with your delete button. cant handle a bit of arguing when it gets tough. and your headlines are constantly misleading to get hits on sites like newsnow. pathetic excuse for a writer. Last time I ever look at this page.
Id advise any of JK's fans to ask again about his £500 bet a few years back. Found a few screenshots of it too.

  65. Bored mancs or bitters, go to your own forums.

Coming on here and talking about reina and Lucas like that isn't funny. Everybody can spot you a mile off. No real Liverpool fans would diss reina or Lucas, so if you want to be clever, at least don't pick two players who every Liverpool fan loves.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Mine! LUCAS and REINA are WORLDCLASS. We cant get replacement for them. QED

    ReplyDelete
  67. Now that was silly wasn't it.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Funny, I thought Borini was the first. Shouldn't it be the second of many to come?

    ReplyDelete
  69. And just because 20,000 people are following this, doesn't mean it is not fake as well. There are countless examples of this

    ReplyDelete
  70. 3rd choice for no other reason than politics. A few seasons ago, form wise, he was better than Casillas, yet he was still behind him, politics is the reason he is number 3 goalkeeper in the Spain squad, just because he had a bad season by his standards last season, doesn't mean we should get rid. He is an excellent keeper

    ReplyDelete
  71. Such a huge liability that he won the golden gloves award 3 times, yep, huge liability.

    ReplyDelete
  72. And this LFC forum in particular

    ReplyDelete
  73. I agree that the twitter account is more than likely not his. But he is officially a Liverpool player, says so on the official website

    ReplyDelete
  74. You're right of course, Lucas was the reason we went backwards last season, BECAUSE HE GOT A SEASON-ENDING KNEE INJURY.

    ReplyDelete
  75. How an overnight legend? There is no such thing as an overnight legend, it takes a lot of hard work.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Name a club that Bellamy has stayed at for more than one season, although he is a great player and I rate him highly, he doesn't stay at clubs long term.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Ah yes, so it was. I was fooled by the lack of tweets...

Not that it matters now but the account still seems odd to me. Anyway, great signing in my view and good luck to him. Rodgers portrays a sense of calm assurance in everything he does and I really trust that he's building something here.

    ReplyDelete
  78. 100% certain,not better than Aqua whom Rodgers sold 4 0.5m

    ReplyDelete
  79. Man U supporters shouldn't really comment or are you feeling bitter because all your major signings are not coming through ...

    ReplyDelete
  80. We still lack a roy keane, viera, yaya toure or maserano type player in midfield. We need a ready made phyiscal midfielder who also has the talent on the ball. All the top teams in the premier league have this type of player. Apart from Gerrard who plays further up field we do not have one. Lucas is ok but would struggle against people like yaya toure or essein. Shelvey is not ready yet and should be loaned out and spearing is no way liverpool standard. Hopefully we'll see a winger & striker arrive soon. I hope joe allen settles into the liverpool team and becomes valuable to our cause as we just cannot afford any further bad buys!!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Lucas dominated Toure in the league at home last season and is one of the best defensive midfielders in the league now. Essein was a really good player a few years back but injuries have ruined him, so much so that he now can't get in the Chelsea starting line up. Shelvey is going to be a top player, he's still only young but looks to have a bit of everything. He can shoot, good passer and he likes a tackle although he can be a bit reckless at times. He reminds me of a young Gerrard. The fact that he's playing in front of Henderson and Adam shows that the new manager rates him.

    ReplyDelete
  82. He also had a bad season last year & doesn't appear to be the old Reina. I am not so sure his heart is at LFC. I think he needs to up his game big time.

    ReplyDelete
  83. You are also correct. JC also cost us & did create a lot of problems for our defence simply because he is past it. Pepe still needs to do it or he'll be gone & as for Carra he should be left out of the team, only used when we have no other option.

    ReplyDelete
  84. How do you work that out Einstein!

    ReplyDelete
  85. With Shelvey starting against Gomel I think the writing is on the wall for Adam. If Adam is behind a 20 year old in the pecking order for a qualifying european match and we just sign a new "maestro" for big money he's suddenly distant third in line for a role that honestly he's not suited to play. We'll keep Spearing as able backup for Lucas, Gerrard and Henderson will play that advanced role ... there just isn't a place left for Adam. Best for him and the club to find another club. I don't think he's a particularly bad player but why would he stay and fight for game time when he could start for another club better suited to take advantage of his skills?

Joe Allen is a great signing, simply for me because the manager wanted him so badly. I trust Rodgers in his evaluation of the player and to hear someone speak of a 22 year old as being as good as some the best in Europe is really exciting. I'm willing to be caught up in Rodgers' enthusiasm and believe that Allen is going to really boss that central role. With Lucas back from injury, Gerrard looking lively in that advanced role, Suarez already his blisteringly creative self, Borini a raw prospect already with a goal to his name ... what's not to like? Downing can surely only improve with finally a functioning midfield to help him out, well, we can hole.

    ReplyDelete
  86. what a load of crap lol.91 pass success ,6th best passer in europe ? swansea completed by far the most passes in there own half last season .51 % in fact which was comfortably higher than any other team.i would of thought that had something to do with allens high pass success rate .im pretty sure xavi etc were attacking creating chances a lot more than allen did last season since your comparing them.allen made 2 assists last season.thought hes surposed to be a deep lying PLAYMAKER.Allen was that much better than all the west brom, norwich midfielders that swansea finished on level points with west brom and norwich .to top that up west brom and norwich didnt use that really affective secret barca tika taka style that rodgers has secretly learnt lol

  89. "In the region of 15 mil" you say, whereas its quoted in goal.com as the fee was 19 mil.. Don't know whether goal.com is credible or not but if its true then the way I see it 19 mil is too steep an amount.

    http://www.goal.com/en/news/1862/premier-league/2012/08/10/3299793/official-liverpool-sign-joe-allen-from-swansea-city-for-19m

  90. Reina hasn't been world class for ages.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I like this signing as I think he is a good player and more importantly, he knows Rodgers' style first hand which is a big bonus. Probably expensive but he is British, so he is bound to cost a premium sadly.

Not surprised that Rodgers has come out with the comments he has, even if it maybe rather predictable, cringing and nauseating the hype he is giving Allen, as after all he has to back his signing.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Sounds like this Rodgers bloke hasn't got a clue. Let's get him out, quick! When can you start?

    ReplyDelete
  93. If he ever was. I don't see how Reina can be considered World Class when he's done nothing for Spain on the world stage. Yes, he's been unlucky with Casillas being no 1, but if he was that good, Reina would be providing stiffer competition.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I hope Joe Allen is given time to settle and provide the missing link to our midfield which was not seen in the past few seasons .Welcome to LFC Joe ,do us all proud.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I don't claim to be a manager ? Rodgers does. I'm not getting paid millions . But since your asking i can start immediately for a small fee of £2000 a week . What a bargain . I'm not saying Rodgers is completely hopeless. He had A good season with Swansea but so did lambert and west broms manager since they finished in level points and without using Tika taka style and having Allen playing in there midfield. That's all I'm saying. Rodgers season was slightly overrated but I still want him to be successful for us obviously being a Liverpool fan. I'm not going to lie just for the sake of being possitive . I say what I truly believe. I don't think personally Borrini and Joe Allen are good enough to get us to be where we want to be. Please prove me wrong mr Rodgers. I wish you all the best and let's hope I'm wrong

    ReplyDelete
  96. If u think lucas is in the same bracket as yaya toure then why has he never been linked to another club or someone bidded for him when he was soo outstanding, sorry dont agree. Our midfield is no where near as good as it was 3-4 years ago. Yes the current crop are doing ok but will not get us into champions league position. League table does not lie and im not going just big up players just for the sake of it. Shelvey is ok but i reckon he will be loaned again and time will tell if he's gonna be top. Allen will now be playing ahead anyway and may even be sold.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Toure is a top player, I never said otherwise but you can't compare him to Lucas. Toure is a converted attacking midfielder whilst Lucas is an holding midfielder. When they played directly against each other in the home league game last season, Toure was dominated by probably the best Lucas performance I've ever seen. Up to the Lucas injury in November last year we was sat in a comfortable position just outside the champions league places, once he was ruled out our league position plummeted. I find it hard to believe I'm sitting here having to defend Lucas because he's been outstanding over the previous two seasons. This is a guy that plays everytime for Brazil. But hey, what do those Brazilians know about football!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  98. Lucas was brought in as an attacking midfielder but was ineffective so got moved over to a holding position in midfield. Yaya can tackle, pass and score goals. The complete midfielder. Brazil use to be a great side with great players but not anymore and thats why they are 5th in world ranking just ahead of england who also have some good and some average players. I think you still have not answered....if lucas is that good why he's never been linked to another club, my point is he's ok and does a job by doing the basics, but you make out as those he's world class.....no way!! Now mascherano was world class and is why we miss him without a doubt.

    ReplyDelete
  99. billy the cat you haven't got a jar a glue.

    ReplyDelete
  100. so you think he is good on crosses ? and never gets beat at the near post then ? cos the facts are it happens all the time with him.and if there is a 10 year old on the site its certainly not the cat .

    ReplyDelete
  101. How do you know that no other club have been interested in him, not every offer that has been made makes it into the papers. A few years back Inter and Villereal reportedly made offers but so what if they did. Lucas is outstanding, has been for a while back and would get into Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal's team because hes better than the players they have in his position.

    ReplyDelete
  102. All great players get linked to top clubs and you here about it one way or the other.  That's such a poor excuse considering you think he's so brilliant.  Based upon you're assumption we should expect imminent bids from utd, chelsea & arsenal then, as they are all struggling to keep up with man city and need a player like lucas....right??  For a start Alex Song @ Arsenal is better than lucas hence being chased by Barcelona at present.  Need to back yourself with some hard facts and not a fan living in a fish bowl.

  104. What Rodgers did with swansea was so amazing last season.Unbelievable .Norwich and west brom finished on level points and lamberts men beat swansea both meetings with swansea conceeding 6 goals .swansea also drew 2-2 and 4-4 with the worst team in the prem last season [wolves].Norwich and west brom didnt even have 1 of the best midfielders in the world [joe Allen ] and also didnt use that amazing secret barca tika taka style like swansea did yet finished level.must of been a fluke lol.According to hendersons previous boss he was the best up coming english player but he has not looked anything like it so far.Im              starting to see people now overrating Allen in my opinion.hes a good player and did well for a mid table side just like henderson did but i have my big doubts that hes at a top 4 side standard player.i have a feeling that a lot of prem mids out there could of got a very high pass success rate like Allen did if they were playing for swansea under Rodgers tactics making lots of safe backward passes .swansea completed the highest amount of passes in there own half by far last season so i wouldnt get over excited about  his 91 % pass success and those of you out there comparing him to xavi etc are bonkers .chelsea ,1 of our top 4 rivalries just bought oscar for 25 mill.when team gb played brazil in a friendly im sure allen and oscar both played in that game.Brazil completely outplayed team gb winning 2-0 [should of been more] and oscar got man of the match.Brazil then went on to reach the olympics final and to top that up im pretty sure oscar will be 1 of the stars in the world cup in 2 years.Allen wont be there cause i very much doubt wales will even qualify. So im feeling the likes of chelsea etc are just pulling further clear of us when it comes to signings and looking at where we finished the last 2 years.Would be great if you could  prove me wrong mr Rodgers

    ReplyDelete
  105. And where are your hard facts that says Song is a better player? How about the fact that Lucas finished the season as one of the top tacklers in the league despite having his season finished in November. You also said previously that Brazil aren't a good team anymore and that's why Lucas gets a game. You only have to look at the quality of the team they sent to the Olympics, which was just about an u23s team to realise what a load of crap that was. If I had the choice between Carrick (can't get in the England team), Mikel (very average player) or Song (good player I'll admit) who all play the same position as Lucas, I'll take Lucas everyday.
