Denmark may suffered the heartbreak of an early exit from Euro 2012 on Sunday, but several of the team's players enhanced their reputations during the group stage, including Liverpool defender Daniel Agger. According to (dubious) speculation in the press, Real Madrid are monitoring Agger's situation at Anfield, but is there any chance the Dane will leave?
Despite an injury-plagued history at Anfield, Agger is arguably the club's best defender, and after 6 trophy-lite years at Liverpool, it would be understandable if he was thinking about moving on.
Thankfully, in an interview after Denmark's defeat to Germany, Agger made it clear that he's happy to stay at Liverpool for the foreseeable future. He said:
"It's no secret that I'm happy at Liverpool. I have not spoken with the club [i.e. LIVERPOOL], but if they come with an offer, I will definitely sit down and talk with them. It's not something that is urgent, as I have contract until 2014"
Agger publicly criticised Roy Hodgson's style of play during the England manager's ill-fated spell at Anfield, but there won't be any repeat of that under Brendan Rodgers as Agger is excited about working with him:
"I am looking forward to meeting the new coach. I've seen what he has done at Swansea, and it has been very impressive".
As Agger says, he has two years left on his contract so there's no real urgency to tie him down to a new contract.
To be honest, if I was Rodgers, I would make Agger Liverpool's new captain for next season.

Replacing one injury prone captain with another? Not a good idea in my opinion.
ReplyDeletewow, the results are very close. i could definately understand why people would want him to be captain, personally he would be vice-captain as carragher is most likely not to see that much football next season, but I would like to know your reasons Jaimie for wanting him as captain before Gerrard
ReplyDeleteit is so close but i think that its about time that gerrard takes a back seat
ReplyDeleteReplace possibly one of the greatest and most charismatic liverpool players of all time with Daniel "Ive been injured half my career and won nothing" agger. Are you out of your tiny little mind? Gerrard would be captain of any liverpool team going back 30 years, he has consistently dragged liverpool back from the brink and is hitting his best patch of form in 3 years with 2 assists from 2 games with england plus a match winning holding midfield performance against France.
ReplyDeleteThis article is one of the worst pieces of speculative journalism I've ever read and you should be embarrassed. Go and write for the scum.
Reina should be captain...end of.
ReplyDeleteHi Jamie, I don't think he should be captain. Not because he does not have the needed qualities but because he gets injured too often so less time on the pitch.
ReplyDeleteStatement he made is very typical of a player who wants to go. Let him go if he wants.
ReplyDeleteHe has been strongly linked with Barcelona. I would like him to stay at Liverpool. He is a very important player for Liverpool.
Stevie G should remain captain as long as he is actively playing in the team. Not wise for Brendan to rock the boat in his first year in charge. He needs solid players' support to implement his strategies.
ReplyDeleteWhat leadership skills has Agger shown to make him worthy of being captain? Perhaps if he got over his injuries to be on the field long enough he might be found worthy of a shot. until then I'd stick with Gerrard and have Lucas as vice captain.
ReplyDeleteYES AGGER WUD BE A CAPTAIN FANTASTIC BUT BEHIND STEVIE G
ReplyDeleteI think the negative effect it would have on Gerrard would overweight the positive one it may have on Agger. agree with above as well, until his fitness improves substituting one injury prone captain for another doesn't really help us. Maybe we could put Suarez in charge of PR.
ReplyDeleteGerard is captain - end of story!
ReplyDeleteFor me after Gerrard the next Liverpool captain should be Lucas Leiva, if not him then Pepe Reina would be my next choice.
ReplyDeleteGerrard is the Captain and Reina is the Deputy.
ReplyDeleteLucas is third in the order.
Vidic took the armband from Ferdinand because he never comletes a full season...... Similar to our Dan!
ReplyDeletehave you seen the way our skipper has performed thus far in the Euros?
ReplyDeleteStill a couple of years left in the boy. Sigurdson Gerrard and Lucas sounds, looks and is a formidable trio which will cause teams many problems next term
Skrtel should be captain. Plays every game. Plays well every game. Leads by example. Rarely injured. What's to discuss?
ReplyDeleteNo chance, Reina has whinged at any opportunity and has been a shadow of his best over the past 18 months.
ReplyDeleteI'd keep Gerrard as captain and promote Lucas to Vice Captain. Agger and then Reina as back up's.
ReplyDeleteKanwar, im really starting to worry about you, reading the question you asked the fans!
ReplyDeleteWell thank f**k your not Brendan Rodgers
ReplyDeleteWhat a person and a player - it is really hard to demand never-ending allegiance with a club that hasn't won anything important for 7 years, and still he is staying loyal.
ReplyDeleteRegarding captaincy: not sure about the next season, although Agger should definitely become our next captain eventually.
Lucas ? Have tou been on the Stella ? Stella
ReplyDeleteLucas ? We'd have to be desperate Dan
ReplyDeleteCorrect
ReplyDeleteGerrard is our Best player, Our leader and inspiration to all the other players, of what benefit would it be to even consider replacing Gerrard?
ReplyDeleteBut laso replace with a player who is nearly as injury prone as Owen Hargreaves! I do love Agger though and wish he stayed fit more often.
Incidently JK, in the article I read you say Agger has had 6 trophy lite seasons? Oh so it's about winning trophies now is it? Agger has played in the champions league for nearly most of these seasons but that isnt enogh on its own, it's all about WINNING!!! Whatever the cups are, even the Carling CUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
II think our next captain will be martin Kelly playin in the center of our defence. Gerrard got another 2 maybe 3 years there. Stevies style of play will have to change but I think he's an intelligent enought player to adapt as his legs tire. Look at giggs. His whole game was based on his dribbling skills and yet still playing at 64 years of age..... Get on the yoga Stevie. Long live the king they call Stevie g
ReplyDeleteLucas is great.
ReplyDeleteOh no he isn't.
Oh yes he is.
Sorry :)
ped·ant/ˈpednt/
ReplyDeleteNoun:A person who is excessively concerned with minor details
;-)
'Trophy-lite' is just an expression. Additionally, saying that is not an expression of how I see things, but of how I believe Agger would see things, i.e. players like to win trophies.
I actually looked at the first team squad again, and I have to say I'm somewhat worried about who will be our next captain.
ReplyDeleteFor now Gerrard is good to go, but when he tie up his shoes, it's gonna be tough making a decision.
It will have to be a senior player, which rules Kelly out for the time, and I do not think Skrtel and Lucas are great leaders, as much as I like watching them play.
It leaves us with Reina, Agger and Suarez, and not many will want the club's face to be Suarez's since his conduct this season made LFC look bad in the eyes of the world, at least for a while.
Unless we sign a big player, or any of the others develop faster than expected, I think it would have to be between Reina and Agger, and if Reina will return to his best, performace-wise, my vote is going to him. If next season he will continue with the level he has shown this year, and Agger will remain injury-free, I'll go with him.
Wow, big comment Jaimie! Why don't u think Stevie should retain the captaincy??
ReplyDeletecan agger be 4th? and johnson 5th?....
ReplyDelete2 things Jamie. Firstly, replace Gerrard, the man who's led England to top of the group, as captain? Nahh...
ReplyDeleteAlso, you spend a lot of your time ripping into Reina and say he should be sold for "undermining managers", and you even went as far as saying he was against Rodgers. Yet, when he recently said how excited he is and how great Rodgers is, you were quiet? Rather odd I think.
I fall for it every time!! I see an article on newsnow that looks interesting and then I read it and it's just more drivel from you Jamie, about how shite everything about our beloved club is, if you're not having a go at the manager, it's the players, and now you decide that a guy who undoubtedly is a good defender, but, is about as fragile as a China doll, should take over from a player that has given his life to a club and yes although he had his head turned by the millions at Chelsea, still decided to stay because the club is his life!! But it's ok for the Dane to threaten to leave every time he's left out of the starting line up, even though he might have been injured, and still expects to go straight back in without match fitness!
ReplyDeleteUkraine should have won tonight.
ReplyDeleteMiracle that England even qualified
Reina's first reaction to Rodgers' appointment was to say he wanted Benitez. I wrote about that, and in the article, I referenced Reina's positive comments about Rodgers. Even if I hadn't, it's not odd in the slightest. I don't have time to write about every LFC issue under the sun, so I choose stuff that interests me.
ReplyDeleteHe clearly states that he would sit down and talk to other clubs... and then you say he should be made captain???
ReplyDeleteHow do you twist what he said into making him captain? If Suarez had said that he would sit down and talk to other you would be calling for him to be executed!
So as usual it is the "negative" comments from players you don't like that interest you... Thing is,do you knowthat interview was done after Rodgers was appointed?
ReplyDeleteReally Simon? I thought, although England started weak, they were the much better team and deservedly won. Rooney was a real let down for me, hope he picks it up!
You have misread the quote; Agger says he will sit down and talk to LFC about a new contract, not other clubs.
ReplyDeleteSorry, your right, I did mis-read it. I was looking at it in the context of talks about real madrid.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, Agger is the captain for Denmark, although I do agree that Gerrard should remain captain with Lucas as his deputy
ReplyDeleteWhy not Lucas, he is a proven captain at international level, he was captain of the Brazil U21 side before making the transition to the national side proper and is a constant in that side. The Brazilians see the quality he has, especially in a leadership role, so does previous management at Liverpool, as he has captained us before. He should be promoted to Stevie's deputy
ReplyDeleteYou don't have time to write about every LFC issue under the sun, only the ones that are negative, when something positive comes up, you choose not to write about it because you are an "objective" fan. By the way, you still haven't responded to all the fans on here that have asked you why you would rather Agger as captain over Stevie. Cat got your tongue?
ReplyDeleteEr because he's shite
ReplyDeleteUr a tit, or just blind an deaf after his first season. What footie do u watch?
ReplyDeleteI would have thought he'd have proved his detractors wrong by now.
d door will open if u wan to leave....we want fully commited player...agree?
ReplyDeleteSad news newcastle are close to signing De Jong and Debuchy. WTF is Rodgers doing. I cant believe im sayi this but i wish KD was the manager atleast he wud have bought De Jong.
ReplyDeleteIt seems Arsenal and Newcastle will be a major force next season.
Tottenham are gonners but hey liverpool are gonners too.
Im with u on this one Jamie Pepe Reina will flop deliberately for 80% of the season. Sell him for 30 m and buy Ter Stegen for 20m.
ReplyDeleteWhat? Where have you been for twelve and a half months? Not watching LFC would be my bet. Lucas is a superior midfield enforcer, he has shown this many times last season and the saeason before. He is the first player on my teamsheetfor next season, no matter who we buy. Rafa once said "People just don't know how good Lucas is" I cannot understand why fans still can't see why he's so integral t our team. YNWA.
ReplyDeletewas that a miricale or was it offside
ReplyDeleterelax man....rush buy may leading to be FLOPs again....let our new mgr study team once all euro player back...
ReplyDeleteMe thinks Agger as captain from 2013/14 season and Suarez as VC.
ReplyDeleteCandidates for these two positions are between Srktel, Agger, Pepe (if he is staying), Suarez and Caroll definitely NOT Lucas!
ReplyDeleteThank you Kirk, Lucas is shite and has always been. LFC need someone to push him off his perch, pitty there's Spearing only. Best have a go at Diame, quicker, meaner, bigger and stronger!
ReplyDeleteSomebody please tell me what LFC is waiting in the transfer market, scraps, when are they intending to spend the reported £25-£30m? Arsenal have done their business, Chelsea have, Newcastle are, Man U are and LFC? The silence is sickening and scary.
ReplyDeleteEnd of what? No argument? Done and dusted? It's a daft idea frankly. Whilst the occasional exception can be named, I don't like having the goalkeeper as captain. The captain should be out there in the thick of it, able to encourage his players and even give them a kick up the backside (verbally) if the are underperforming. The goalkeeper hardly gets chance to talk to any of his players other than the defenders.
ReplyDeleteStevie G is the right club captain. Strewth, the guy is not ancient, he's 32. He's got tons of experience and wisdom on the pitch, he leads by example and he is respected by every player in the team bar none. Why change that?
The last six months have been his best since we signed him , out injured
ReplyDeleteThat's 3 decisions that Terry has been involved in this season (1 given, 2 not given). And each time the decision was wrong.....
ReplyDelete*Light blue touch paper and retreat to safe distance*
Don't forget Reina who was also a vice-captain and even played captain once when both Gerrard and Carra was unavailable...
ReplyDeleteWith 2 years remaining on a contract for a valued player there IS urgency to make a decision imo - at that point you need to decide whether you want to keep or sell, as his value is only going to decrease greatly as he approaches that final year of his contract...
