Moyes: Carroll can be an international star like this 'incredible' striker...

Everton manager David Moyes has dismissed suggestions that Andy Carroll is not good enough for England, and he's tipped the much-maligned striker to prove everyone wrong during Euro 2012.

Speaking to ESPN earlier this week, Moyes claimed that there are certain players who can 'open your eyes' during international games, and he believes Carroll - who scored only four league goals last season - could surprise a few people if he gets the nod against France on Monday. He said:

"Carroll might seem a throwback but some big strikers who don't fit the look of an international player have ended up being key men for their countries.

The one I always think of is Jan Koller. You had a Czech Republic team full of skilful footballers such as Pavel Nedved and Patrik Berger and then what seemed like a big diddy up front. Yet Koller turned out to be a serious player and his record for the Czechs was incredible.

"I've always thought Carroll has got it in him. He will be a worry to any team at set-plays."

I'm mystified as to what evidence Moyes examined that allowed him to come up with this 'Carroll could be great for England' theory. Unlike Carroll, Koller actually had the balance, technical ability and mentality to flourish on the international stage, and 55 goals in 91 internationals proves this.

Carroll's performance against Belgium last week sums him up: one misplaced header near the start of the game, and then he was anonymous for the rest of the game. The commentator repeatedly made reference to Carroll's defensive contribution, but he's in the team to score goals, not make defensive headers.

As Moyes is such a huge fan of Carroll, let's hope he puts in a bid over the summer. If ever there was a natural successor to Duncan Ferguson, it's Andy Carroll.

  2. i think a successful premier league manager like moyes knows more about football than you jamie.
and carroll had to play a defensive game against belgium cause thats the way hodgson sets up his team, very defensively.

  3. He set up young for his goal? Then defended brillantly.won headers...an touches were good? You seriously do piss me off. All you do is point out bad things about him well he getting better get off his back.idiot.:)

  5. Carroll did not set up Young for his goal and you know it. He passed to Young in midfield; the goal was an individual effort and Carroll had nothing to do with.

What is Carroll's primary role in the team? To score/create goals, or to defend? Is he a defender or a striker? What attacking impact did he have on the game? How many chances did he create for himself or others? If he wasn't on the pitch, what attacking difference would it have made?

  6. its by no means set in stone as to weather carroll will be a success or failure. He clearly looked lethal at newcastle, and has it in him, although yes, i agree, mentally, as with downing and henderson, he does look weak. However, unlike downing and henderson, carroll did start to respond to his dwindling career path. i honestly believe, that a manager like benitez would have carroll looking like a top class player, what remains to be seen is, can rodgers get the best out of him.

Carroll may never play at a club bigger than liverpool, this indeed may
be the biggest chance he gets in his whole career, but at the same time,
its unwise to write him off completely just yet.

id say, the euros(although rumour is danny w may start due to more
clinical finishing), and next season, are carroll's last chance to prove
he is a top class player. after that he'll be off to villa, stoke or
    everton.

  7. Ha ha, great piss take from Moyes. Can't believe people are taking him seriously. As for Carroll being the new Duncan Ferguson, keep on dreaming kopshites. Ferguson was five times the player that Carroll is.

  9. Jaimie, we all know you don't rate Carroll and you've made that quite clear. But your statement at the top of this page is just not right. Firstly he got 9 goals in total last year, yes only four in the league but he also scored in a semi final and a final. When he came on in that final he showed touch and technique and terrorised a team that won the champions league a few weeks later. His performance at home against Chelsea a few days later was excellent, I would go as far as saying he was unplayable even though he was up against two good centre halfs. Yes he has to produce these performances on a regular basis and yes he has to score more goals but he has recently started to look like the player he was at Newcastle. He's still only young, and if we give him more time he could become an important player for us. Moyes is a good manager and he knows more about football than me or you put together so if he says Carroll can be a hit in this tournament maybe we should listen.

  11. Zulu - the statement is not incorrect; Carroll scored only 4 league goals. That's a fact. It's great he scored in the FA cup but it was too little too late. LfC finished 8th in the league for a reason, and Carroll's failure in front of goal was a major factor.

  12. Your mystified? We are all mystified at why you keep trying to write about football when you know nothing about it. You have proved in every single piece i've read that your completely inept when it comes to football understanding. What you have wrote here is another example. Your not seriously trying to suggest that Moyes is incorrect here are you? You use words like 'mystify' to describe the comments of a man more successful, more intelligent than you as well as having a far superior footballing mind than you. Give it a rest Jamie your wasging your time trying to write about something you clearly just dont get.

  13. I said he'd got 4 league goals and 9 in total, and I also said he has to improve next season. The point I'm trying to make is that he's looked a lot better in the last few months, he's scored more goals and his overall performances have been better and for that reason we have to give him more time before passing judgement.

  14. Carroll could make a major impact in the euros Hodgson system is tailor made for him to shine. Plus slowly over the last 6 months for me he has shown  the mental toughness be a top a top player, England could reap the rewards of the difficult start to his Liverpool career. I wouldn't look in to stats to hard going in to the tournament. Alan Shearer didn't score for 16 games for England before Euro 96.

  17. Hi Jamie, everyone here knows you are biased against Carroll...But let me react a bit. Although you claim that Carroll's and Koller's skills and abilities can't be compared, you forgot about one crucial fact.
Jan Koller started his national carreer in 1999, he was 26 at that time! And Andy is still just 23. I remember Koller playing in the 1st Czech league prior to 1999 and he was more than terrible - sloppy, slow, awkward, without any technique. All the fans in the Czech Republic considered him to be a clown. But he was so hardworking and determined to get to the level where he ended -  the best scorer in the Czech national team - and prove all the doubters wrong.
I am not sure but I hope that if Carroll changes his attitude (and he seems to have), he might be able to be quite succesful both for Liverpool and for England.

  20. ha ha ha very funny Jamie. I think so many people are prepared to make excuses for Carroll because there has not been a lot of other young English center forward phenoms to get excited about (I am not implying that Carroll is a phenom). Danny Welbeck is a fresh face in the England national team set up , and a direct competitor for the starting position . Ofcourse Wellback represents the evil empire in English foot-ball the team Liverpool fans love to hate. So Carroll is the natural choice hero for many Liverpool fans. To be honest Liverpool has not produced a striker who got it done both domestically and internationally since Micheal Owens did that for club and country. Rooney is easily England most popular foot-baller someone actually wanted by a host of clubs across the world should he leave Man u tomorrow. With no other young striker as consistent as Wayne Rooney I believe that Carroll and Welbeck were included to fill the roster. Andy won't be at the Euro competition if there were more suitable younger options for Woy to choose. He is not there because of talent he is there because of a lack of other viable options. Bent , Defoe and Crouch represent a different generation and Roy would like to bloody the younger players in preparation for 2014

  21. Exactly !  He got Jelavić, a player I had to chance to see many times before he came to Everton and he made him such a great player for them.

Believe me, Carroll showed so much more potential, and still has it but was not used properly by Liverpool.
I'm not congratulating Moyes on Jelavić's great form, but he knew what he wanted in a player and he what they needed.

  22. Give the boy a break. If he screws up this chance he knows it may be his last. Roy may be able to get the best out of him. Roy's system may suit him just fine.

    ReplyDelete
  23. What's moyes talking about let's just face facts carrolls a average player at best victor anichebe scored more epl goals than him and he only played about 10 games and probley only started 1

    ReplyDelete
  24. he's not even starting, he's going to be plan B. make that plan c when shrek is back.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Roy has opted for skill and more clinical finishing with danny W. that means he doesn't trust carroll to score when chances arise. one more season to prove his worth as a top class player or else its mid table forever.

    ReplyDelete
  26. This sums you up. Your so arogant you even question one of the best managers in the premiership.

  27. Hi Glen got to admit i was a huge fan of big Dunc, also think if
big Andy is used right he could be equally as effective. As for
Neverton, if Baines , Cahill, Fellaini, & Pienaar go somewhere else
things could be very very bleak indeed, espescially if Moysie also
    leaves.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Moyes is a good judge of a player, Pienaar, Fellaini, Jelavic, Baines, Jagielka all good signings. Carroll and Jelavic upfront would be lethal, whether Carroll will be another Big Dunc who knows as he would need to put the fear factor into defenders first as most defenders were scared shitless of Ferguson.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I personally would not have signed Carroll in a million years, let alone for that stupid amount of money we gave them.
Now in saying that, what if Carroll could change, if he worked hard enough and gained speed on and off the ball, worked hard with his ball skills, became more mobile around the box, also became more consistent and accountable, f#$^k he would be really dangerous, i think he has the passion but is he able to gain all those things i mentioned, i really hope so but i really doubt it, only time will tell please prove me wrong mate.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Incidently JK. What will it take for Carroll to prove you wrong? How many goals / Assists does he have to complete next season for OPTA to rate him!!
Even his most fierce doubters must acknowledge his performances last season improved and he deserves a little credit and not to be laughed at every opportunity. yes he is not worth more than 15m but is not his fault.
He looks Fitter, Stronger and not the laughing stock he was at start of season. Yes his goal ratio is not acceptable but laughable he has only just turned 23!! Time is on his side and Rogers is going to give him a proper chance. So time will tell!!!!!
Oh and in any managers book, any player who offers Defensive support to Defenders is an asset. Shearer done it so good down the years but to his credit he knew where the goal was!!!!!

I’d guess that the “Evidence” Moyes is basing his conclusions about Carrol on , apart from drawing upon his lifetimes worth of experience within the professional game , is Carroll's performances in pressure games for both Newcastle & Liverpool , major factor why Liverpool bought Carroll is his temperament in pressure games , his ability to take it upon himself to carry the fight to the opponents “Gerrard Style” & his since proved ability to score important goals in finals & semi finals .

I’d also guess that those of you who would think that someone attributing Outstanding “technical Ability & Balance “ to Jan Koller must either be clinically insane or just someone who didnt know who Moyes was talking about so they looked up his international goals per game stats on Wikipedia & then tried to bluff his way in public with them , are either simply wrong or you have an axe to grind !?

I can tell you “Doubting Tomas’s” right here & now that Jan Koller is without doubt the most technically gifted , most well balanced European Centre forward I or anyone else has ever seen play the game !

All of you that think the attributes of “Balance & Outstanding Technical Ability” only applied to fantastic European attackers past & present such as Keegan , Dalglish , Beardsley , Litmanen , Owen , Fowler , Littbarski , Hazard , Johan Cryuff , Hughes , Brian + Michael Laudrup , Zola , Ronaldo (Portugal) , Baggio , Raul , Bergkamp , Butragueno & Del Perio , who happen to be wold famous for having Outstanding “technical ability & Balance” are simply wrong yet again !!!

Other appropriate words that described big Jan’s playing style are ..

    Nimble .

    Lithe.

    Tidy .

    Fast .Efficient .

    Athletic .

Now let that be an end to it !

I wont hear another word on the subject !!!

  33. regardless on everybody's opinion of carrol in the england squad (where i think he would fit into hodgsons system very well) we have to remember that lfc's principles of football are going to change dramatically with BR in charge, can you really see carrol fitting into the "tika-taka" style of play?? i mean i do like carroll i think he is a great player but just not in the liverpool team not with BR i will be very very surprised to see him be kept. he's not a great technical player he is a great target man, powerfull, large, okay header of the ball but be realistic he couldn't hit a barn door, i would love to see carroll flourish dont get me wrong but im not too sure whether he really does hav the potential to be number 9 for liverpool, i mean come on the great "ian rush" was our number nine, and being tall was about the only thing near being in common with carroll, his movement seems slow and quiet lithargic, he may have looked a little sharper near the end of the season but thats because he doesnt want to get sold... i really cant see how he is going to be part of the new quick style passing and keeping possession tactics that BR will bring to lfc.
