Agent confirms: £8m LFC target is open to offers. Competition for Lucas...?

Lucas Leiva is currently the only dedicated first-team defensive midfielder at Liverpool, and signing a back-up/competition must surely be on Brendan Rodgers' agenda right now. Liverpool have been linked with 20-year old Celtic midfielder Victor Wanyama several times over the last few weeks, and his Agent has now confirmed that the Kenyan starlet is available for a transfer this summer.

Speaking to Sky Sports earlier roday, Rob Moore - Wanyama's Agent - made it clear that the youngster wants to push through a move to a club 'at the highest level'. He said:

"Wanyama is like any other young talented footballer in that he wants to play at the highest level.

"He has made the club aware that if they receive an offer from one of the big leagues he would like them to consider it. He loves the club but should something come in he feels they should listen."

£8m-rated Wanyama cost Celtic less than £1m a year ago so if Brendan Rodgers is interested, it's highly probable that the transfer fee would be significantly less than 8m. If Nikica Jelavic - an established goalscoring international - cost 6.5m, Liverpool should surely be able to get Wanyama for £2-£3m.

  1. 2-3 million are you having a laugh, he will be worth 15million after next year.

  2. Think Diame should be brought in as cover for Lucas, he won't cost us anything.

    ReplyDelete
  3. 2 - 3 million? Are you out of your mind?
Wanyama is twice the player Jehlavic is. Besides, he isn't for sale. Why take a step backwards and go from Celtic to Liverpool? Give your head a shake.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Who writes these stories ? Jelavic was a snip but only as his employers were trading illegally. Unfortunately for interested parties, Wanyamas employers don't operate like that and as such his fee will be minimum £6 million. It's a shame for all involved that a great player will step down in terms of crowd attendance and atmosphere to a smaller club, who are granted in a better league, but much smaller in the larger sense.

    ReplyDelete
  5. 2-3 million?? Take a running jump! Celtic dont need to sell him....why dont they go across the road to Rangers? They will be giving players away by the end of this week....

    ReplyDelete
  6. Liverpool should be able to get him for 2-3M!!! Who do you think you are. Why would he leave a club with 60k watching a week to a small club like liverpool. If he does go it wont be for that money, it will be closer to 10M if you compare him to the duds that Liverpool have bought recently

    ReplyDelete
  7. £2-3m for Wanyama, never mind walk on, more like dream on. This guy is a class act and can only get better. Strong as an ox, tough in the tackle, good in the air and can play several positions. As usual poor research from an ignorant english source. He is already better than Carragher, Spearing, Skrtle, Agger, Lucas..........you are no where near as good as you think your are which is your clubs major problem.

    ReplyDelete
  8. He's under contract for another 3 yrs so Celtic hold all the cards here - its up to them to decide what hes worth and toss out any offers that don't meet their value. You are really having a laugh if you think you'll pick up a gem for a paltry 2-3milllion. Remember you paid 35 million for a striker who can't score. Hail Hail!

    ReplyDelete
  9. jelavic was only that cheap because rangers are broke..celtic have money and dont need to sell players for way below their value ...if wanyama leaves celtic it will be for at a minimum 7 million and not the ridiculous amount of 2-3 million that you said ...this boy is like a young essien and will be worth a lot more money one day ...

    ReplyDelete
  10. Of course 2-3m is realistic!

    * He's only 20 years
    * He's coming from the SPL, not La Liga;
    * He's totally unproven at the highest level.

Twice the player Jelavic is?  Based on what - playing for Celtic?  Jelavic is a proven international and he's a proven Premier League player. No one is going to pay 8m for a 20 year old whose only experience in the UK is one season with Celtic in a low quality league.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Maybe to play at a higher standard because the SPL is championship standard at best.

    ReplyDelete
  12. £8 million is the price Celtic will accept "apparently". At 20 yrs old the power in the lad whilst possessing good ball control and passing ability is very impressive. He also scores goals from defensive mid position and can play centre back and right back if required. Looks like a player worth having in your squad to me.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Lucas is a Brazilian international and one of the best holding midfielders in the league. Your guy Wanyama might look in the SPL but that could be because it's a crap standard. Agger and Skrtel are two of the best centre backs in Europe and maybe the only two players to come out of our season with any credit.

    ReplyDelete
  14. you might be right. The SPL is not the best that's for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  15. let me tell you, regardless of the spl standard, this guy is going to be world class. i watch the spl avidly and celtic are my 2nd side. he is a bully, a good passer, a fabulous defensive midfielder, as much as i would be sad for the mighty hoops to lose him, i would snap him up for the pool. a genuine, genuine talent. ihope he stays at celtic rather than go to anyone else, apart from us.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Is this the same Lucas that not so long ago was a joke figure among Liverpool fans? And if Agger and Skrtel are two of the best centre backs in Europe why are they playing for a mid table english prem team? I haven't seen any of the big boys knocking on Liverpools door with major offers. Wake up a smell the coffee, you are liviing on memories.

  19. Liverpool will have to pay a substantial fee for this guy

2-3 million is pie in the sky

Celtic don't need or want to sell.

This kid is a bit crazy in the tackle, red cards galore if we sign him

    ReplyDelete
  20. spartak moscow 11m for aiden mcgeady, who was only a squad player and couldn't get a game for eire.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Craig Gordon £9million
    Alan Hutton £8 million
    Stan Pertrov £8 million
only reason Jellyfish was 6 was os Rangers are skint

    ReplyDelete
  22. now that was a sick joke!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Wasn't the fee more like 9.5m than 11m? McGeady was/is far more experienced. Plus, that kind of fee is the exception rather than the rule. Find me me on player aged 20 or less who has moved to England for 5m+ in the last 10-15 years.

    ReplyDelete
  24. All of those players were experienced internationals, and much older than 20.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Liverpool are my English side but come on, the club that spends £35m on Carroll, £18m on Jordan Henderson, £16m for Stewart Downing and £8m for Charlie Adam, a guy who struggled to get a game at Rangers think they can get Wanyama for £3m!?!?

I thought a Liverpool FC blogger, unlike most English clubs sites, would be an enlightened football fan who is not so ignorant to be so dismissive of pretty much anything other than the wonderful English Premier League.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It is you who is ignorant, not me. I've given my reasons why an the fee will probably be low. Why exactly would LFC pay big bucks for an unproven 20 year old with only one season of experience in a lower quality league?

How many 20 year olds have moved to England from the SPL for big bucks in the last 20 years? Name one!

It's not dismissive; it's reality. A player is worth whatever a club is willing to pay, and I doubt that LFC would pay more than 3m.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 2-3 million r u steaming,u paid 8.5 for charlie adam, spl player that didnt get a regular game at the germs.when u see a boy thats a player u no he is a player, pay the big bucks and celtic will sell,we will the go and dig up another gem elsewhere but 2 mill stay off the sherry laa

    ReplyDelete
  28. Charlie Adams couldn't even get a game for rangers. Liverpool are a big team but thinking you can get a player like Wanyama on the cheap is the behaviour of a small club. I would wager Gary Hooper would score more goals for Liverpool than Carroll. You bought Kenny Dalglish when he only had experience of the Scottish league and playing for Scotland, that worked out ok for you and you paid a british record at the time, perhaps that was back when you were the biggest club in England.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well actually their is talk of Man city being after Skrtel, while I only read today that Real Madrid are looking at Agger. Yes that is the same Lucas, the same one who won our player of the year the previous season and despite getting his season ended in November still had the best stats of all our midfielders. Your kidding yourself if you think this guy wouldn't jump at the chance to play for us. Better standard, more money and a chance to play against some of the best players in the world every week. Finally let's not forget we won a trophy last season and narrowly lost in another final to the team that won the champions league so do you really think we're that bad a team or just inconsistent. I think it is you that needs to wake up pal, the SPL is just a stepping stone for any decent player.

    ReplyDelete
  30. You havent got a clue dont let your team down dafty

    ReplyDelete
  31. all told 11m. and the cheap skate, tight arse, is chasing me for 50 euros that i owe him for a game over two years ago!!! these players have no gratitude you know!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Liverpool didn't buy Adam from Rangers; they bought him from Blackpool, so that point is irrelevant.

    ReplyDelete
  33. so do i mate

    ReplyDelete
  34. This guy is a bulldog in defensive mid, I want Wanayama yesterday to be exact. Love Lucas but I think it's time he had some competition. We haven't really had a bulldog in midfield since we Mohamed Sissiko (probably spelled it wrong). Sissoko was  a terror for us. He unfortunately was prone to committing a lot of unnecessary fouls. He was a presence a real precense for us in that position. Lucas has done a really good job, and no one can take that away from him after a slow start at Anfield. I think that Wanayama is a strong solid competitor who will fight for every ball and would put his body on the line to stop the opposition. The fact that he can find the back of the net when when he finds himself in an attacking position is only plus that can only help our team. I think we should not waste Celtic's time with a bid for 2 - 3 million when they can  get more than that from other clubs who might want him. I know the clips are a compilation of some of the players best moments but from it I can tell that he has had much better moments than some of our more expensive stars. I think we should seriously pursue this player and open up the check book because he is certainly one for the future.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I didn't say Liverpool would pay more than £3m, that's up to Brendan Rodgers, all i'm saying is that you are wrong to think, and i quote "Liverpool should surely be able to get Wanyama for £2-3m"  To think poor wee Celtic will accept £3m for a player with 3 years left on his contract - that's ignorant.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Have you sold all your pies Simon

    ReplyDelete
  37. People like you dont do Liverpool any good dont you know your history thicko

    ReplyDelete
  38. No, that is based on history. Again, I ask: find me ONE player aged 20 or younger who has signed for a PL club from the SPL for more than 3m in the last 20 years.

History doesn't lie, and it's that way for a reason.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well if Liverpool only want to pay £3m then Celtic just simply won't sell him. Jelavic was only so cheap because Rangers were broke - Celtic are in no need to sell. And why does it matter if a player is a "proven international" (which Wanyama is) or not. Henderson, Enrique etc weren't proven internationals when Liverpool signed them. In any event I highly doubt Wanyama would choose to go to Liverpool. It would in all honesty be a big step down. He'll get regular Champions League football over the next few years then be able to move to a properly big club.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Well said Zurawski

    ReplyDelete
  41. You get to bed Jaimie you dont know much about football

    ReplyDelete
  42. Unproven, i think playing good against udinese, atletico madrid and rennes in the europa league is enough to prove he is good enough

    ReplyDelete
  43. Jaimie - I don't think you are listening to reason here.  If Liverpool offer £2-3m it wont even be taken seriously.  If you really think Celtic would sell at that you are plain wrong.  Anything under £6m won't be entertained and its going to take something more to beat the other clubs interested.  Liverpool aren't going to be his only option by a long way so why would Celtic take such a derisory bid?

    ReplyDelete
  44. That's not what I said.  What I meant is Celtic don't need to accept £3m for the player.  It would take a much larger sum of money for Celtic to even consider letting such a promising prospect go with 3 years left on his contract.  You said Liverpool should be able to get him for £2m - £3m - there is no chance of that.  Maybe a Newcastle would be so ignorant to believe this (i.e the idiot from newcastle-mad.co.uk), I am surprised to hear it from a Liverpool supporter.

    ReplyDelete
  47. i'll put it this way, if wanyama leaves celtic and liverpools bid is £3m then you'll find him going to anfield in the away dressing room guarenteed

    ReplyDelete
  48. celtic won't sell for 2/3m and liverpool shud go for diame but age don,t matter name 1 everton player who has matched rooneys fee jamie and glasgow celtic arnt a big club jamie there a massive club and if they say 7m they will get it and why the last 20 years name me any 20 yr olds who av gone for over 5m

    ReplyDelete
  49. TJ Hooper is right, There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that Celtic would accept a £2-3m bid it makes no sense footballing wise or financially. He has 3 years left on his contract and other teams will be offering far more. Celtic would laugh at £2-3m and that is a fact. They laughed at Bolton's £3m bid for Kayal last season and he's not even as good as Wanyama. £6m plus and you might have a shot.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Patronising, ill informed and insulting.

Why would Wanyama join Liverpool when he has heard a big club like Everton might be interested?

Yes, mate, your £2-3m suggested offer for a young, raw but considerable talent like Wanyama is comparable as an insult to my above comment.

Have you not heard of sale-on value?

    Gie's a break, pal!

    And stop nicking our songs!

    Hail! Hail!

    ReplyDelete
  51. You talk absolute garbage.  Charlie Adam couldn't get a game for bankrupt Rangers in his last months at Rangers ok.  The teeny weeny seaside club Blackpool had him & your great brains at Anfield waste £8.5m on him.  I hate man utd but Fergie played u like a fiddle, he said famously Adams corner kicks are worth £10m & within 2 months yer H£r0 king kenny master tactician (not) took the bait & flushed £8.5m on Better than his brother who is still owned by Inter Milan - Macdonald MARIGA.  £2-3m for a player being tracked by  JUVE 7 other sides better than Liverpool.  Keep your £2-3m.  You couldn't buy his house for that

    ReplyDelete
  52. This is ridiculous, a fee of 2-3m would be correct for a player like Stokes or maybe Rogne. Wanyama is rated by the fans at £8m, he can keep Jelavic in his back pocket. All you have to do is look at the highly rated Scottish players going to England. He isn't just proven in the SPL, he is also proven in the Belgian league. Fellaini, Courtois, Lukaku?

Yet again another EPL child sky zombie that doesn't know his facts.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Weetim, thats nonsense. Jelavic is a terrific striker. It matters not that he played for Rangers. He is a finished product who has proven he can score in both the EPL and European competition. I think you need to give your head a shake. Liverpool is a high profile club. We wish Celtic were in the EPL in the table position that Liverpool is.

As for Wanyama, you are having a laugh MaGee if you think 2-3 million will get him. Try 7 or 8 million. Celtic have no reason or pressure to sell anyone.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Have you heard of INFLATiON, market forces, inflated transfer ffes, where we operate now.  Carroll is seriously & i mean seriously a £2m pound player now.  You cannot say on his ridiculously bad stats, lazy attitude, bad shooting, terrible positional sense (that is where he is now.)  He was an £8-£10m striker for Newcastle when your brains Dalglish shat £35m down toilet for him.  His career has stalled.  Wanyama is fresh, exciting, super powerful, tremendous passer, powerhouse for 90mins, can play DM, CB, CM. This guy is going places & in todays market we already knocked back £7m bid from Southampton for Hooper & Newcastle bid £6m a year ago for Beram Kayal & that got laughed at.  These players we got are better than the £10m Spurs paid for Hutton from Rangers.  We don't entertain shitty £6m or £7m for players who we know are going onto bigger things & the going rate.  Keep your shitty £2m & buy another Andy Carroll cos that's what that lamppost is worth.

    ReplyDelete
  55. This the type of player we need to shore up our midfield, IF we can get him for a reasonable fee and he wants to come...i say sign him up.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I try to watch Celtic whenever I can on Sky, and thought Wanyama was immense last season, especially with Kayal injured and Commons suddenly going shit (!!). I think he would be great for Liverpool but he would cost at least £8Mill, and Celtic have no reason to sell.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Will you all give it a rest with the "small club" bollocks, please? We've already had enough of that from fncking Swansea fans, ffs!!

Just argue the facts. Celtic don't need to sell. Wanyama may try to force a transfer through, but then will clubs baulk at the asking price?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Agreed. He was immense last season.

Ever thought of changing your name to H8UTD+HuNS? Just a thought......

  59. Sorry, we don't do "enlightened" on this site.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I understand your logic, but to be fair we did spunk about £4m up the wall on Danny Wilson a few years ago. And I'm yet to see anything to suggest he was/will be any better than San Jose/Ayala/Wisdom.

I've no interest in Scottish football and have never watched this guy play so have no opinion on him though.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Which one in particular, Paul? YNWA?

Just out of interest, would Celtic vote for the Rangers Newco to be allowed in the SPL? It would obviously mean no Old Firm games (barring cup-ties) which would surely affect the pittance that SKY pump into Scottish Football. Personally I find it quite amusing that 130-odd years of bigotry may be liquidated, but it could have a huge bearing on the SPL especially to the clubs who count on the big away followings that Rangers invariably bring.

    ReplyDelete
  62. As good as the player he is, so let's see if BR can get him on a cheap, though 2-3 mil pounds sounds a little low. Anyway, a little off-topic, I hope LFC can bounce back after the disastrous 2011-12 season. I firmly believe we are now a laughing stock among football clubs, especially those selling clubs. Why should they sell their players to us cheap after we paid 35 mil pounds for AC and 20 mil pounds for SD? Those are extremely silly money-into-the-drain transactions made by our ex manager and DOF. I fully understand because I'll be the one laughing my head off say if Arsenal bought those champions. Sadly, they never will.

  76. First things first, I'm Kenyan, a massive Pool supporter and a follower of Mariga (Wanyama's brother) and Wanyama himself.

In Kenya the biggest clubs are Pool, Gunners, Chavski & the Scum. If any of the above come knocking, Wanyama will give it serious thought. Trust me. Clubs like Everton will not get him.

While the SPL is pretty good and Rangers & Celtic are top clubs, the rest of the league do not compare to the EPL, that's a fact.

I will be the proudest Kenyan Pool supporter if Wanyama signs for us. Not only is he a young and a very talented def mid, he is very dedicated, physically extremely tough and gives his all. He plays with his heart on his sleeve. You can't ask for more especially from a 20 year old.

With the right guidance, he will be top in the world. He comes from a top sporting family: his brother Mariga won the champions league at Inter with Mourinho, his father played for AFC Leopards (Kenyan PL) and his sister is a pro basketball player.

This guy was brought up to be a footballer and he will do us good. Sign him Rodgers!

  78. seriuosly outside the top 6 the Epl is nothin special...most England Internationists are not worth the money quoted or even splashed out i.e. Milner or especially Carrol...they look good in the EPL with foreigners around them, FACT!! Another interesting point is you take our so called nobodies for 2-3 mill like S. Fletcher and over night their value doubles, sometimes even trebles and for why?? For playing for the likes of Wolves or Bolton and fighting relegation every season and now surprise surprise Fletcher is on the move again for the quoted 8-12 million lmfao...do me a favour...England and its football is soo far up its own @r$e its laughable...Granted the SPL is not the best league in the world (wink wink), but Celtic more than hold their own in "Group stages" of European compitition and would give any EPL side a run for their money over 2 legs. Hooper is twice the player Fletcher is and Wanyama has nothin to prove and is worth 8+ all day...If he was to go down south I would like it to be Liverpool coz let me tell u, they feckin need a player like him. :D HH YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  85. Yes but Jelavic has been sensational in the Premier League against much higher standard opposition than Celtic or Rangers face every week so just because you play in a different league means nothing, class rises to the top. Look at that lad McLean at Sunderland came from the Irish League.

  93. Hey Jamie I was blocked from posting in  your article about Michu, why is that i did not say anything bad about anyone.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I don't believe that for a minute, Bill. Purely because the revenue that Celtic would generate in the "EPL" would ensure that they could compete for almost every player. They are, and I detest the word, a huge worldwide brand. Wherever you go in the world, you tend to meet a Celtic fan or a Manc (or at least a sad sap with a Manc top on).

    ReplyDelete
  95. Also the disparity in TV revenues available to English teams compared to Scots teams ensures that mediocre English sides make more money from appearing on the telly than Celtic will for actually winning their League.
You only have to look at the calibre of player that both Celtic and Glasgow Loyal Newco had on their books before the TV pulled the plug on Scottish football - Larsson, Sutton, Hartson, Petrov, Lennon, Ricksen (!!!)

Don't even start me on the parachute payments that reward failure.

  96. Give me strength.

Before Lucas was injured: handily placed in the League with wins at The Emirates, Woodison and Stamford Bridge.
After Lucas got injured: erm, not a lot, really.

Did you not see the City Home game, Kirk? Yaya Toure was probably THE best midfielder last season, but Lucas hit him with two tackles that shook him to the bone.

Why can't people appreciate that every team needs a water carrier?

  101. Reached 2 cup finals without him , just a couple of stats all the people that rate him quote his stats most passes etc , so there's 2 good uns for you , he is not good enough

  102. "Jelavic is a proven international"?  as much as i hate Rangers, he had done feck all for Croatia till he went to Rangers & improved dramatically.  You could write your knowledge of football on the back of a stamp.

  103. We reached 2 Cup Finals despite him not playing, not because of it.

Swap Lucas for Spearing, and we would have had a better chance of winning a cup double.

  104. a step backwards are u on crack, celtic play in a poor quality league and even if they were in the premier league they wudnt cope with the quality and more than likely get relegated, typical celtic fan.

  105. not many of the players who have moved to the EPL from SPL at around that age have cost anywhere near that amount. However, they also have nowhere near Wanyama's ability. He will be a superb player for any team that want him.
James Mccarthy is now worth quite a lot as is Steven Fletcher is you are maybe doubting the quality of player that a league such as SPL can produce...
Jelavic was 'only 6.5' because Rangers were SKINT. Remember they somehow managed to con Spurs out of the 9mill or whatever he cost, if they weren't desperate Rangers would've doubled their asking price and picked up a much higher transfer fee.

Also, if Liverpool are only willing to pay 3million for him then rest assured Wanyama will most certainly not be signing for Liverpool.
Peter Lawell is stingey, but in this scenario, if it even arises, it's a good thing for Celtic.
Wanyama has also played for his international side at the highlest level they can play. He also has European experience from Europa League this season.

  106. you're right Jim G, but as much as i LOVE the games against the great unwashed, they have cheated, and despite the pretty much guaranteed drop in income from sponsors, tv deal's etc they must say no to the newco. Otherwise the Scottish footballing authorities will lose all credability, if it even has any left after the Dallas scandel, and now the Campbell ogilvie scandels...
They should know FIFA and UEFA are watching their every move...

  107. i hope that never happens... He really is a class act. Before Celtic he was at Hibs where he helped Hibs unearth guys like O'Connor, Riordan, Whittaker, Thomson, Brown, Fletcher, Murphy, Murray... all quality acts for Hibs and almost all moved on for very healthy profits to Rangers/Celtic/Burnley/Lokomotiv Moscow/Birmingham...
    Quite impressive work for them...

  108. Pity they can't take a few of their titles off them, like Juve had done to them......

    Hail Hail.

  109. Paper reports today suggest that Chelsea are monitoring Wanyama, and a £14 mill price tag has been mooted.

  110. I think in the 12 league games he played in we'd drawn 5 and lost 2 not exactly league winning form , he is not good enough

  111. I guess we'll disagree then.
