England manager Roy Hodgson sprung a few surprises yesterday when he announced his Euro 2012 squad. For some inexplicable reason, the likes of Stewart Downing and James Milner got the nod, but the inclusion of beleaguered Chelsea thug captain John Terry for 'footballing reasons' also came as a surprise. Amid major criticism over the decision to include Terry, the FA this morning posted a series of video clips on its site showcasing Terry's recent imperious performances. I was initially skeptical of Hodgson's reasoning, but after viewing the FA's footage, it's clear that the former Liverpool manager was absolutely right to include him.
In his press conference after announcing the squad, Hodgson explained the thought process behind selecting Terry:
"My decision with John Terry was based purely on footballing matters, I was given a free hand as to the squad I picked. I realised that when I selected him there would be people who would raise eyebrows but that's the decision that I've made, that's the decision I shall live with".
Hodgson was immediately attacked by the media for selecting Terry, but the FA quickly moved to quell the criticism by posting evidence on its site of the 'football reasons' that underpinned Hodgson's decision. A spokesperson for the FA stated:
"Roy Hodgson and the FA studied hours of footage from Chelsea's recent games before making the decision to include him, and purely on a footballing basis, it's clear that Terry's defensive ability remains unsurpassed in the Premier League, and indeed Europe"
Here is the footage from the FA's website, and as I'm sure you'll agree, it shows that Terry remains one of the finest defenders in the world:
* Astonishing poise and balance against Arsenal:
* Prodigious anticipation/reading of the game against Liverpool:
* Incomparable defensive timing against Slovenia:
* Admirable commitment to fair play against Barcelona:
* Astounding defensive masterclass against Liverpool recently:
Clearly, Hodgson and the FA inarguably made the right decision.
John Terry: England's finest.

What a pile of knob cheese!
ReplyDeletehahahah......hes a disgrace! ....amazing drogba reaction......
ReplyDeleteNothing surprises me with Hodgson and FA. For Hodgson read Poulsen and Konchesky as for the FA. WELL. The biggest hypocrites in the whole wide world. They were quick to condemn and ban Suarez but with JTerry they let the case until after euros. Three people were enough to ban Suarez. F****** HYPOCRITES.
ReplyDeleteEDL member and general thug-sums up the typical chelsea fan.
ReplyDeleteCant believe he and Downing were selected, 36 games 0 goals and 0 assists they are credentials. Players who got left out must be gutted to find their places filled by scum like Terry and crap like Downing.
ReplyDeletethe fa are liars terrys a racist
ReplyDeletethe third GIF has me dying, i can't believe it. LMAO
ReplyDeleteI agree, I would of selected jagielka over Terry and Chopper MacCardle who plays right wing for the Eagle and Child in Huyton over Downing.
ReplyDeleteNice one. LOL.
ReplyDeleteWell, as i have been saying since Hodgson got the job, everyone who slated us for not giving him time or being fair will now know what the fuss is about.
ReplyDeleteAnd i don't believe him, he dropped Ferdinand because his brother had the cheek to, allegedly, be abused by Terry and then Chelsea delayed the case specially, so the England manager could have a chance to pick him. The defence looks light without an experienced defender like Ferdinand in there and I think it is shocking to see him not get the chance to step down at a tournament that Carroll and Downing are going to while Henderson is standby.
At least Hodgson's general negative outlook might suit the actual ability of the squad, though. We are the WBA or Fulham of world football.
Haha - actually, I am surprised that Konchesky didn't get the England nod!
ReplyDeleteTerry is a gurrier alright but one hell of a defender in terms of bravery and putting his body on the line for the team
ReplyDeleteWorryingly he looks to be getting found out a little recently. Who will play alongside him? Cahill has pace so may be ok with him
I hope Hodgson does well, gentleman
Terry is lucky to be included in what may be his last major tournament. He may be considered too old for the next world cup and Euro competition next time around. I don't know but some people are saying that Hodgson is taking great pains to exclude other members of the Man U squad from his Euro squad.
ReplyDeleteYoung and Rooney have their places reserved on the squad for Euro 2012. With the injury to Lampard and Parker a lot of people where hoping that Woy would call up Micheal Carrick. Carrick a far more experienced player than Henderson saw the latter take Lampard's place on the Euro squad. In all fairness Carrick is not making a big thing about it. On the other hand with the injury to Gary Cahill, Reo Ferdinand has blasted Woy openely about his ommision in the England squad as he saw Martin Kelly replace Cahill. Some people see this as an attempt to limit the inclusion of Man U players on the squad. With Woy's recent connection to Liverpool it is believed that he has a soft spot for members of the team which explains why he included Martin Kelly a player with limited first team starts this last season and Jordan Henderson a player with very limited international match experience. While a lot of people feel that it is a good idea to let more young inexperienced players into the squad to allow them to get that much needed experience this issue is certainly raising a few eyebrows simply because the two last minute inclusions are both Liverpool players. Anyone have any thoughts on this please feel free to comment.
