Liverpool Manager latest: Top 10 candidates - Who is your choice?

After the sacking of club legend Kenny Dalglish, Liverpool are in the process of selecting a new manager to lead the club forward. The current favourite is Wigan manager Roberto Martinez, but who would you like to see take over at Anfield.

Odds are changing on an hourly basis at the moment, but according to an aggregate of all top bookmakers right now, the top ten candidates for the Liverpool job are:

* Roberto Martinez (Odds-on favourite)
* Andre Villas-Boas
* Rafael Benitez
* Didier Deschamps
* Frank Rijkaard
* Fabio Capello
* Jurgen Klopp
* Alan Pardew
* Martin O'Neill
* Paul Lambert

For me, I would immediately rule out all of the following:

* Fabio Capello (Too old)

* Martin O'Neil (I've called for him to get the job for 10 years, but sadly now he is too old)

* Alan Pardew (I'm not convinced he can replicate his Newcastle form at LFC, plus I don't think the fanbase would accept him)

* Didier Deschamps (Style of football is too negative, plus he's already turned down the club once)

* Jurgen Klopp (My top choice, but let's be realistic here - there's no way he's leaving Dortmund, especially after signing a contract extension recently)

* Rafa Benitez (He's had his time; go forward, not backwards)

That leaves four:

* Roberto Martinez
* Paul Lambert
* Frank Rijkaard
* Andre Villas Boas

To be honest, I wouldn't be averse to any of those four managers. Klopp or Guardiola are obviously top choices but that isn't going to happen.

  1. Jamie, give us who you prefer.  Give us a name!  My choice is AVB for sure.  His CV out-weights Martinez

  2. Has to be Klopp like Jaimie
AVB has been a flop at Chelsea that is also on his CV.

  3. Houlllier brought in loads of French players.
Benitez brought in loads of Spanish players
KD brought in loads of British Players
Everyone knows Britain hasnt got any talent, a dog won the talent show.
It has to be Klopp and then we can have lot of German players, we would definitely will score more pens then.

  4. out of the ones who i think would come. I prefer avb, then rafa as 2nd choice, martinez 3rd choice.

  8. flopped at chelsea because the old players wouldn't do what he wanted, it is a horrible club to manage. Plus he still had a better record in the league than di matteo believe it or not. (and he is a success?)

  9. Klopp, for me. Contracts don't mean anything in football these days. He has done amazing at Dortmund and doing the double this season has been a fantastic achievement considering the team Bayern have. Not sure if he speaks English though.

  10. We need a top proven manager not a relegation dodger. been there done that.

  11. AVB by a long long way.

He is young and has bags of potential. Plays attractive football. Has a honours on his CV. He bought well for Chelsea.

So he didn't work out for an aging rebelious squad at Chelsea. So what? It takes time for anyone to settle into the premier league, and at least he has that out of his system now. Of course he made mistakes at Chelsea, but the question is has he learned from them. After a fat paycheck and some time to think, I'm guessing yes.

He is the best fit for Liverpool, so when it happens.. Get on board.

As an outside shot, his appointment may indeed be a route back in for Steve Clarke. Might make for an easier transition.

  12. Martinez because hes the more realistic target out of the bunch

  13. Yasser.
If we always relied upon experience, no one would have heard of uncle Bob. It's not always the best way to go.

  14. AVB, top manager unfortunately the right man at the wrong club (with regards to Chelsea), if he were to be chosen at Liverpool we could see promising youngsters get a chance break through the first team, his style of football is what Liverpool need.

If England can look at Hodgsons CV and admiss the failures at Inter and Liverpool, I'm sure that the owners won't judge Villas-Boas on what was a unjustified sacking.

  15. Out of AVB and Martinez i'd go fro AVB for sure, had he been an option after Roy....i think we all would have been giving him the thumbs up.

You can tell that he's got a lot of ideas about the game and is very enthusiastic about it, he's young and positive, love the way he jumps up and down on the sidelines getting all animated etc shows a lot of passion in the man...

Ticks all the boxes as far as im concerned in terms of football style etc and does have some pretty impressive success to his career already, the Chelsea episode was i think doomed from the off, right guy wrong time....

Could also attract some quality signings, does seem to be able to spot talent BEFORE said talent mankes a big name....lots of positives IMO has to be on the shortlist and as i said IF he had been an option after Roy (Kenny not an option..) i think most of us would have been pretty happy with him as manager....

There was much talk about this guy at that point and he was the preferred choice, that hasn't change for me, the Chelsea situation does not bother me at all, yes we have some ego's but i think its about time the Club dealt with them and brought in competition for their places SO IF they don't like it they can be dropped....

That to me is the biggest issue with have, finding the right manager for the players.....should be the other way round i.e. finding the right manager for the Club..... and i think with AVB we could clear the decks start anew, get rid of anyone not happy about the decision to bring him in etc replace them....

Don't see it happening though becaues i think FSG will not want to go through that much upheaval and face potentially a lot of hostility from the fanbase if it isn't glaring success straight away...

SOS are already kicking up a stink about the state of the Club atm, calling for a sit down with the owners....and this is the thing really, the pressure will be on FSG and that is IMO very much to do with rafa benitez, because if they appoint him then SOS will STFU and be happy, most of the team will be happy as they would have got what THEY want...and the rafa obsessed fanbase would get what it wants.....and seeing as they are the most hostile and impatient of us then i can see that being a big issue, it is almost like we are being FORCED to take rafa back......

But fcuk em :) its AVB for me, and i hope FSG have the balls and the brains to drag this club out of this headlock that rafa seems to be holding the club in....

  16. Bring Benitez, Klopp or Pep but Martinez would be the worse choice to ever be made.

  17. Rafa is the obvious choice - with the exception of Fabio Capello, he is the only one who can practically guarantee success on the basis of a longstanding track record. Fabio however speaks terrible English and is in my view too old for the Liverpool job, while Rafa is "hungry" to prove his critics in England wrong; knows the club and how to get the best out of our players; and is the master tactician par excellence.

Liverpool (unlike our old rivals upriver) made a big mistake in allowing Rafa to go a couple of years ago based on one bad season, now they have another golden opportunity to reverse that mistake.

Mourinho, the other low-risk candidate, is not even on the list - and I would still prefer Rafa.

If Rafa were not available, the only other convincing candidate would be Jürgen Klopp - who however has yet to prove himself outside Germany and on the European stage. Of course he is also unlikely to leave Borussia Dortmund at this time. Pep Guardiola would be an intriguing choice but would also be high-risk, having flourished in the context of the club where he played and coached for so many years.

So back to the future - Rafa is the man and FSG should do everything they can to bring the man who led LFC to the pinnacle of European football back to Anfield.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I honestly don't believe that the owners are even really considering Rafa. Dangerous situation. For me if they go for Martinez when a more experienced, more qualified, better fit is simply waiting for the job, then there will be revolt on the first loss of the season. For that reason i'd put my money on AVB beeing in the dugout at Anfield next season.

The one I'd most want to have if I could choose anybody?---Klopp followed closely by Guardiola.

As far as credentials of the managers most likely available?---No question has to be Rafa.

The one I believe the owners will end up going for?---I have very little doubt it will be AVB, as he is young, but with enough of a CV that the fans would be a little more patient.

Only reason that I am not crying out for Rafa, is that I believe that the English media, this website among many others, had a massive problem with Rafa. Maybe because he stood up to red nose. I don't know but they'd be looking for absolutely any reason to give him negative press, which always ends up affecting players/perfomances. What I really liked about Rafa is that he took every part of the club into consideration and had high standards of himself and the players. I will always look back and wonder what could have been, if he'd had the backing to go for players like Silva, Simao, Mata, Villa etc. We'll never know now.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Of these candidates, my choice came down to between Villas Boas and O'Neill. I stick with the latter as I've called for him to be appointed for years now.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Guardiola never for me, Liverpool doesn't have Barcelona team nor set up that is bringing young players to their first team. It rules out Rijkaard too.

They didn't make Barcelona what it is today they were just one of the catalyst's to make it happen.
For Liverpool, it would probably ended in disaster.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Heart says Benitez, head says AVB.

We can only hope the wholesale changes in the backroom staff will be followed by drastic changes to the squad.  No manager will break into the top 4 with the current squad.

There's at least 5 good options there anyway- klopp, avb, benitez, martinez, deschamps

    ReplyDelete
  22. I wish Chelsea will pick Rafa.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Everything they can do to get Rafa? All they'd have to do is cough, and he'd be in the job within seconds, frantically scribbling down tactics/formations.

AVB. Tactically sound, young, enrgetic, has a point to prove.Media in England made him look like a disaster and with all the chaos behind the stage at Chelsea they were just 3 points behind Arsenal. Imagine what he could do with the right support from the owners. Also at Liverpool we have very sound senior players.Carragher did not mind sitting on the bench this season and he has openly said that he would be supportive to whoever walks in as manager.Steven Gerrard is Liverpool through and through and he would also be very supportive i am sure.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Dani Pacheco, Lauri Dalla Valla, Kristian Nemeth 3 good reasons not to go for Rafa for a start.
The lack of funds was Rafa's excuse at the end.  Before he wrestled control of team affairs from the board, he was blaming his lack of control for Liverpool's lack of success. Then when he got it he blamed lack of funding.
Alonso left because Rafa spent a season pushing him out, and then discovered that he needed him. Rafa started with Owen, tried to get rid of Gerrard,  and Murphy saw the writing on the wall and left. Crouch was frozen out, Robbie Keane was signed and ignored. He signed Glenn Johnson who can neither attack nor defend, brought in a cheap  Greek defender having totally messed with defence.Got Voronin in who was totally useless
He frittered away another 20m on Aquilani.
The list goes on and on Josemi, Morientes, etc etc.
Crouch and Keane, two of the Premiership's best forwards at the time, came and went under a cloud and could not get on with Benitez. Alonso, one of the best midfielders in the world, again left after not getting on with Benitez. Also, very good players have come to Liverpool but Benitez has turned them into either average or poor players by his poor tactics and poor strategies and lack of inspiration; e.g. Benayoun was brilliant most of the time with West Ham but not at Liverpool.
He had players in the squad who were playing poorly, he played players out of position, he constantly changed the team for no apparent reason. All these  led to a dysfunctional, confused and dispirited team, fans and club. All this had nothing to do with lack of money. The true sign of a good manager is one who gets success with shrewd buys and one who can inspire seemingly average players to become very good or great players and one who can get a team to work together for each other, for the club and for the fans traits Benitez does not have.

I read somewhere that supporters will conduct a march in support of Rafa behind the kop soon. Is it true ? I dont think FSG will make another populist decision.

    ReplyDelete
  29.  I have it on very good authority that Damien Comoli has poisoned FSG management in regards to Rafa returning.

So unless there is a big change of heart Rafa will not be the new manager.

My choice would be AVB, followed by Rafa then Martinez.
Klopp will not come, Capello wants the chelski job and as said above is too old.

Deschamps, Riijkaard no thanks. Pardew would he leave Newcastle ???

Martin Oneill too late for him i am afraid, and Lambert has said no.

I think its between AVB and Martinez

Oh and Guardiola lets get real, he is having a rest as he is burnt out, would he really want to come to Liverpool and all that's required here

    ReplyDelete
  30. Agree, the board here would agree with how AVB wants to run a club and i think the Chelsea experience could actually help him.

For me, though, O'Neill is the only one who guarantess success at the top level in England. He's improved every top flight club he has been at and his achievements at Celtic, after Kenny flopped there, were outstanding. He has previous in terms of cleaning up after Dalglish.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Mee too. He guarantees progress. And that is what we need. Guaranteed progress.

    ReplyDelete
  32. none of these, mine would be guardiola and why hes not on the list? if any other comes in this club will get ruined even more, likes of martinez avb lambert, the best solution would be murinho he wont come clearly so get guardiola, thats the best from the possible ones, please stop mentioning names of manages who are managing relegation fighting teams or managers who failed at top clubs like avb, I think fsg should open an official poll asking all the fans who they want and the manager who gets more than 60% of votes they should appoint him, thats it , stop making decisions by themselves because they dont know much about football, and we do way more than them, so they better listen to us for the first time in the history, without the fans this club would have been nothing, like kenny said.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Apparently, pep said he wanted to rebuild a club as his next project. Who better than us? But i don't know that he would even work at our club, bit diferent when you don't have Messi in the team!!

I'd love to see O'Neill here, if the owners knew more about football history in the uk, i reckon he'd be one of the first names on their list.

I dont want Martinez  - as much for his sake as for ours ,

I read on a forum last night " martinez - booed on his debut , out by xmas " also there were calls to protest against martinez' candidacy at the LFC offices - thankfully though those calls were shouted down.

is that what we've become ? the LFC manager should by rights be seen as the holy grail of football management  - instead a certain section of our fans seem intent on making it a poisoned chalice unless they get thier man ( for many its got to be Rafa )

whoever it is I pray we give them the respect that the position deserves  - we didnt want Roy and it was painfully obvious from the earliest bad result of that season  - we dont need anymore negative publicity so get it right FSG.

  40. The yanks dont go for the peoples choice they replaced their manager who won 2 world series at Boston with a guy called Bobby Valentine. He had not managed for 2 years, last managed in the Japanese League, had no noticeable success in the USA, had been an analyst at ESPN for 2 years and a very outspoken one at that. As a player he was a journeyman utility player.

the owners will not allow themselves to be held to ransom by another fans choice manager  - they want thier own man in place this time .

anyway 60% of the fans would probably want Kenny back .

    ReplyDelete
  47. Jurgen Klopp is my choice.  He's a fantastic track record on recruiting young players with talent & small wages. He's the ideal candidate for FSG plans of adding profit to value. However, He's unlikely to leave Dortmund just now, with the opportunity of CL's football. Martin O'Neill has a proven track record of improving the Clubs when He take over from another manager. Klopp or O'Neill for me.

    ReplyDelete
  48. All this talk about CVs you'd think we were playing Top Trumps!

Personally I wouldn't mind Martinez. And before people say it's only Wigan...tell me how many managers can handle that kind of pressure and still get his team to play passing football and not simply hoof it upfield.

And again, for all those who say we need a top manager it's no guarantee of success. Sven and Fabio had 2 of the best CV's in football but couldn't do it with England. There's no reason Martinez couldn't be succesful - most top managers start at smaller clubs, e.g. Mourinho, even Shankly! And what of Klopp and Benitez. Again both started at smaller clubs and both experienced relegation... Beneitez twice (and sacked twice in his career in Spain) before achieving success.

On that basis Martinez's CV is not a problem.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The rafa brigade cant take the truth fact.

  50. Kenny Dalglish couldnt speak English so thats not a problem

    ReplyDelete
  51. why was pep not put in the poll because he would have won hands down.

    ReplyDelete
  52. seem to recall that didnt happen twice, think Everton got in once

    ReplyDelete
  53. Some 50 odd years ago the then Liverpool board took a chance on a youngish manager by the name of Shankly - and we all know how that story ended!  So I have no problem with Martinez who I think is exactly the sort of manager that could work wonders - unfortunately over a longer period of time which I fear the new man will not be allowed.  AVB would potentially have the same problem, but with his Porto success he should certainly hit the ground running.  However, for me, it has to be Rafa.  He worked wonders with one hand tied behind his back under the ownership of Laurel & Hardy, is desperate to return and is still plenty young enough whilst having loads of experience. He would also be the ideal man to groom a certain Mr Carragher who I fully expect to Liverpool manager one day.

People have short memories. The last six months of the Benitz regime were abject in the extreme. Certainly as bad as the style adopted by Hodgson and not improved upon by Dalglish. Oh, for some sustained, attractive, attacking football. what we have endured over the last few years has been utter garbage. Martinez plays an exciting game but I am concerned by his lack of any european competition. My choice would be Klopp, especially if he brought Kagawa with him, or Guardiola, and he could bring Messi !! If only !

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'd like to see O'Neill get his chance, he's overachieved everywhere he has been, knows the premiership, players respect him, and he's had experience with dealing with big expectations at Celtic.  Unfortunately if he has committed himself to Sunderland I can't see him trying to wriggle out of his contract, it hasn't been how he has donw things in the past.

Of the realistic options I think AVB is the best choice.

    ReplyDelete
  57. then it must have been houlliers team that won thr CL

  58. sick and tired of hearing bring rafa back he had his time ,its time to move forward he had his chance in 5 years or so he only managed to mount one credible title challenge ,and thats what we want the premier league not the champions league , we need a manager that not only has the experience at the highest level but can attract big name players to the club and martinez isnt the man to do that ,i fear if we get him the pressure will be way to much for him and we will see another roy hodgson saga , and even to go as far as losing our top players come xmas if we arent in a position in the league where we should be ,if our owners are serious that they want liverpool to be succesfull they need to go out and do what it takes to get a top level manager ynwa

  59. I would like to bring in Frank Rijkaard he is the reason Barca are the best footballing side in Europe at the moment

    ReplyDelete
  60. Most successful managers were average players (Fergie, Rafa, Paisley) as I said above, previous success is no guaranee of future success and vice versa.

    ReplyDelete
  61. rafa had 5 years numpty mounted one title challenge, what do we wait for another 5 years with rafa and him wasting millions on players to mount a credible challenge ,no we dont he had his chance and its gone ,

  62. I asked Jaimie last night if he could run a poll just to gauge interest from this site. I picked Capello for 2 reasons;
1 - he was my choice yesterday on here
2 - I wanted to see the results.

In all honesty, I'm not letting who is picked affect my feelings toward the club. If I pin all my hopes on one guy then it's only going to lead to disappointment and an initial sense of rejection if he's not 'my guy'.
So, I'll apologise for sitting on the fence but I'm more worried about playing personnel, both coming in and going out.
I want to see either Huntelaar or Bojan wearing red next season.

  63. RAFA has made it clear that he will not work for a club with Director of Football. Liverpool have changed the setup since he left and he can not control the everything at club like he used as Manager.

  64. Calm_Opinio_Dr_DKG2:33 pm, May 18, 2012

    Afternoon all,

New to this posting game but have been reading comments from this site a number of years.
Whether we approve or not FSG look as if they will interview a number of candidates, including Mr Rafa Benitez; whom I have alot of respect for.
If we want a guaranteed concerted effort, given the fact that there is between 50 and 115 odd million pounds worth of new 'talent', depending how you look at it, just introduced to the club in the last 12-18 months. On top of which there will be a reasonable amount of money available for this summer as a budget for some improvement in the playing staff again, then I believe Mr Benitez can hit the ground running.
However, he just does not seem to fit the remit or profile of what was propounded as FSG philosophy when they arrived and introduced themselves to us; they wanted someone young fresh and under the radar, much akin to the type of football players they are after; undervalued buut awesome.

They also need to see some return soon, as a show of intent and faith by the club/team they have bought, to reassure themselves of their own good judgement as regards their initial purchase of the global brand; Liverpool Football Club.

Therefore, I wonder if they might take a safer route by convincing R Benitez to work with R Martinez to ensure short term strength and a smooth handover, thus keeping a sort of 'bootroom-like' feel; the very thing that alot of die-hard old school fans are complaining has gone.

Personally I like FSG, I think they are brave, strong-willed and apply strategy; something Lfc has been lacking and without clear, concise strategy one leaves things to chance and a fall is assured, one way or another.
I also like the idea of a clean break with introductions of performance related praise and reward, in order to bring the best out in the cogs of our club; that is the only way to get to the top.
The world is ultra competitive and ultra PR driven; get those right and we have a chance.

    Regards

    Dr DKG

  65. I think thats about right tbh, but WHO is it...?

    ReplyDelete
  66. My top 3 are:

    Klopp
    Martinez
Pardew (only if he brings along Newcastle chief scout Carr)

That is who I'd like to see but I don't see Klopp happening at all, as he has a good situation over at Dortmund. Bundesliga is a good competitive and 'increasing in quality' league (hence, one of the reasons why Serie A losing one CL qualification place). Dortmund squad is relatively young, plenty of life in them left as well as plenty of talent, a team that is a genuine rival for Bayern. He'll be hungry to continue to rival Bayern and develop this side as a CL side. A noisy 80k stadium too, that is one of the best stadiums in the world in relation to atmosphere I reckon. And of course, he signed a contract in January.

Pardew's success at Newcastle has been, for me, partially down to the fine work done by the Newcastle scouting team. Don't get me wrong, Pardew is a solid manager but he is made better by those around him too. I like how Pardew gets his team to 'play for him', i.e., he can get them to battle and do the mundane stuff, as well as getting them to play.

I like the general tactical flexibility Martinez tries to impose on his team. The switch to the 3-4-3 has played a massive role Wigan's form in the calender year 2012, where they picked up more points in the league than we did. He, like Brendan Rogers, is forward thinking and I appreciate that in a manager.

So why these guys and not the likes of Capello, Rafa, etc, for me? Well I think the three guys above are capable of building something and more for the long term, as well as being able to work with cheap buys and getting the best out of them. We can't afford to always have a high player expenditure, we have to buy cheap too, in a smart way and with a manager that can get the best out of these risky cheap players  I have never rated Rafa's squad rotation, because he failed at Liverpool and Inter to get the best out of the cheaper players, squad players. He rarely ever got the club genuinely going for both PL and CL at the same time, because he didn't know how to get to rotate WELL with the non-first XI players (one player here and there maybe but I'm talking about overall impact on squad rotation and fielding non-first XI team).  Whereas the likes of Pardew, Martinez and Klopp have shown they can work with the more 'obscure'/'lesser known'/low cost players. Capello needs a proper DoF behind him, like he had a Roma and Juve, and he does best when he has a lot of money to work with. At clubs like Roma, Juve and Milan, he was working with some seriously talented group of players and some of which he inherited (e.g. Saachi's great Milan side). We are talking about the likes Cafu, Maldini, Van Basten, Batigol, Savicevic, etc. We can only dream of having such high-calibre players at the moment. He built some serious teams but I think we don't have the right set up nor is he exactly young, to give him the platform to do it to his high level standards. Regardless of what happened with England, this guy is a legendary fantastic world class manager but sadly, I don't think we are a suitable club for him. I think Chelsea will go for him, if they don't give Di Matteo the job.

The key thing for me is a long term project and the awareness that the club can't afford to always have a high player expenditure (ergo, experience of working with cheaper/lesser known players), in relation to what kind of manager we need, in my view.

  67. Klopp or PEP!! Nobody else is worthy after Kenny! If not them do you really think that anybody else can take the club to top 4 and also he will have to win 1 cup! There is no doubt in my mind that Kenny would have gotten another cup and top 4 next year. So we have to get someone who will bring it next year! If not we need to demand the owners to sell the club to the People. Barca style!

Benitez is not a viable option. Thank you for the champions league trophy but we need some new ideas and syle

  69. I would appoint Jaime K. He has had a wonderful analysis of almost every game before hand since I started reading his articles and he knows LFC inside out. All he needs is a team coach and a few bucks to beef up the squad. Talkin abt the squad, its not that bad and only needs to be selected wisely. Rafa, Roy and Kenny have all had a prob of poor team selection. In addition, Gerald and Carr should be of loaded as they have stayed for too long and most managers fear to antagonize them.

Dont appoint AVB coz he is too young.. He wont command respect.
    Rafa because he failed b4

  70. Hey, where's my post??? Its been nearly 2 hours since i posted it...

    ReplyDelete
  71. I would like to know is they going to be a show of support outside the stadium for Rafa or its just nonsense. The other is how many candidates supposodely they are looking at or that a manager is already in place and this media circus they are creating is just a smoke screen.

What I believe is that FSG are putting these names out such as martinez, Rafa, AVB etc. out in the open to see what the fans reaction of that candidate is. Because they have dethroaned the king recently. And the fans and old players I would say are shocked, angry, and confused about that. Getting a manager they want ( if the manager is not liked by the fans) will have a backlash to the owners. Just like hicks and gillet a few years back. So they don't want that. Fans would want someone like pep or klopp in but thats not gonna happen and I and the fans don't want martinez as the manager. They are others but would they take it knowing that they had the balls to sack King Kenny. All managers will be shitting themselves knowing one bad season like kenny and they a goner aswell. The only option they will be left will be to go back to Rafa. This time Rafa will not do his bullying to the owners asking to much. I think he will take the job whatever conditions the owners want. Because remember he's been out of a job for 18 months which is long for his quality of management. so he'll take the job hands down.

i like Roberto Martinez as my choice. I really like what he did at Wigan, and i think he deserves a shot with a big team and a bigger budget. He got a bunch of misfits to start winning games. Midway through the season I would have picked Wigan as one of the teams that would be relegated this season but I have been proven wrong. The Wigan team took a while to get their act together but when they did they played like their very lives depended on it.

I would really like Martinez to have a go with Liverpool . It would be interesting to see who he would sign and which ones of our misfiring misfits he would get rid of. A lot of players on the liverpool team were shown preferential treatment under Kenny even though they were not performing all that well. If Martinez does get the job I would hope that he gets the best out of our players.

I would have actually preferred Mark Hughes but he just took the job at QPR not too long ago . He has proven him self as a good manager at a host of different teams. At Man City he proved he could work and get the best out of the big egos on the team, and at Fulham he has shown he can work with a small budget and get the most out of the team. Having been around the block a few times Hughes has a good eye for talent. He would have been my first choice but he is not included in the list of potential managers.

  73. "I and the fans don't want Martinez as manager". I'm a fan and I'd rather have Martinez than Rafa. It seems to me that it's more a 50/50 split as to who wants Rafa back and the fans who would rather we go elsewhere so please don't make out you speak for the majority of fans because I don't think you do.

  83. Just like I said that the whole thing is a prelude to a Rafa takeover, I am sure that KD will back him more [He brought back the King to LFC, remember?]  The dismissal of the DoF, is exactly what he wants, to control the budget and go get players asap.  We would have had even Ronaldo, Essien, Alves, Jovetic, etc, but the last two boards were not concerned about success on the pitch but in their pockets. Rafa back

    ReplyDelete
  84. Doubt Klopp is leaving Dortmund unless he feels he has achieved all that can be, its like asking Mancini to leave now or Pep to break his sabbatical! It does not make sense, Rafa, Capello and Emery are the front runners by far, CVs say a lot about everyone. Of the three Rafa is best suited.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Sharp and short mate

    ReplyDelete
  86. We should appoint Muricy Ramalho and tell him to bring his No.11 with him!

    ReplyDelete
  87. You will be one of the pple calling for his head.

    ReplyDelete
  88. so KD's team was Woy's team then and he helped us survive? Be logical.

    ReplyDelete
  89. To tell you the truth Rafa is back, all polls have proved it that he is the man that can take us forward not these struggling managers suggested by the S..n, Mirror. Daily News, Talksport and most of the S..te papers

    ReplyDelete
  90. I like your chain of thought but with so many teams fighting over so little prizes and each with a vast scouting network, finding 'hidden gems' or 'rough diamonds' is akin to the old 'needle in a haystack' analogy. The best and probably safest financial method of this is to bring as many talented youth players to the Academy and, after a couple of years of training to our methods, hope that they will fulfill their potential and the club can then reap the rewards.
If you look at the 'bought talent' vs 'developed talent' in the Premier League, there is a major bias towards bought talent. With the exception of the Man Utd 'Golden Kids', this has never been repeated.

  92. Calm_Opinio_Dr_DKG5:56 pm, May 18, 2012

    Thank you

I understand exactly what you are highlighting, hence why I just wonder if those two Spanish heads, one who can apparently find cheap players and get them going (Martinez) and the other (Benitez) who has vast experience that by all accounts will have a certain bearing on squeezing these little 'gems' found, in getting the absolute best out of them, if only from the fear and respect of playing under a force of character like him.

Young players need time, which we do not have, but as seen with man utd give a young player a fast strong well prepared tight systemed well drilled gifted winning team around them they have less fear of screwing up in their formative first team games and thus a higher chance of reaching full potential.

Benitez is a master at getting his first choice players to play in a winning way, mix that up with Martinez and his apparent ability to spot younger fresher cheaper more youthful talent (that is why they are getting him isn't it?)
And we may have a strong team with good cop, bad cop leadership; one of the best ways to get the best out of people.

    ReplyDelete
  93. And what did the others do?! I think you forgot that we havent even won the league in 20+ years now!! And that 1 second place was the closest, give credit where it should be given, and not to forget that Rafa was under fire through his years. And seriously what money you are talking about? How much money did his players make after we soled them? We made 30m from torres and not forgetting Masch and Alonso!! We had a team that everyone feared to play in the CL!!

The man has his own mistakes but compared to the circumstances and the club status back then, he made us look much stronger than we really were.

    YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  94. Wow, you guys cant forget that one mistake he did?

What about Carrol for 35m? Henderson for 20m at a time we had meriles and aqua? Downing 0 assits + 0 goals for 20m? Charlie adams 0% confidence, even shelvey did better than all of them combined, and how much did he cost us?

    Give me a break mate,

    ReplyDelete
  95. And who made Alonso the player he is? Did you even hear about him before he came to Liverpool?

I dont want to take you through all the details, but the image that all the teams who we played against had for us just speaks out loud!! I remember a time where no team wanted to face us in the CL! And who created that fear Houlier? He created that team and he deserves credit for his work, and in return he just got attacked by the same people who had blind support for KK who was dragging us down to the dark side.

Hope you guys wake up and face the truth. No one is perfect and no one is falwless, but looking back 20 years, Rafa was the only one who put this team in a position it deserved.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Someone on here mentioned how Comolli had poisoned Hnery's mind about rafa so he won't be coming back BUT who was fired just a few days BEFORE the FA Cup final.......??? Comolli...

Im off the opinion that all this "candidates" talk is just hot air...or more accurately put, a smoke screen....

The cynic in me can't help but think this is all done and dusted already....has been done and dusted for a while now....but they want to make it look like its been a democratic decision whereby we have looked at all potential "candidates" and gone about our business in a way which would have been respectful of Kenny Dalglish's exit....

I think FSG have bought into rafa's story...the one about how he was fcuked over etc, it wouldn't surprise me if our new owners have been impressed by rafa's CV and promotion of his "tactics".

A very well coordinated coup d'tat...

    ReplyDelete
  98. Still waiting for my original post re which "candidate" i would like....

    5 hrs awaiting approval..?

  99.  Getting back in the top four would be a good place to start its better than Kenny+money=8th.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Martinez is only odds-on because we know we're talking to him. AVB and Rafa aren't part of a club, so we won't know unless they become advanced. So Martinez haters shouldn't worry just yet! AVB for me.

    ReplyDelete
  101. He still signed great players Like Alonso Reina Agger Skirtel Lucas Torres Kuyt Garcia Crouch Bellamy Arbeloa Mascherano and for those of you who cant work out Glenn Johnson is a very good attacking winger all managers make poor signings its just that Kenny only signed 1 good player.

    ReplyDelete
  102. You know, there are better examples tan pacheco... you just listed players he bought for youth squad. Such waste of millions of pounds I see.

    ReplyDelete
  103. The anti rafa brigade can't take the truth fact.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Roy hardly added to the team so KDS team was Rafa's mainly

    ReplyDelete
  105. aquilani, morientes, keane 45m

    ReplyDelete
  106. Lol funny, it seems like you have a short memory as you can only remember his last six months out of six years........

    ReplyDelete
  107. Then Liverpool will look like a Donkey if he wins league with them.

    ReplyDelete
  108. He has been managing for a long time, but no big clubs have ever asked for him. Another Roy?

    ReplyDelete
  109. Benitez is by far he best choice and everyone knows it.There was electricity in the air when he was in charge.
The Benitez LFC was a major force in Europe, and beat Milan, Real Madrid, etc etc. Benitez had even figured out how to beat Mourinho on a continuity basis. We beat Real Madrid and Manchester United by 4-0 and 4-1 on succesive games.
With FSG and Dalglish, LFC is a Mickey Mouse club.
It will not be easy for Benitez to rebuild the club, but someone has to start somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  110. YES he was a well known player with Real Sociedad playing under John Toshack, have you heard of him?

    ReplyDelete
  111. pennant, keane and aquilani

    ReplyDelete
  112. agree 100% with what you say about players rafa would have bought if had the backing , gillet and hicks are to blame for the demise of our club ,rafa was fighting a battle against these 2 evils

    ReplyDelete
  113. Rodgers was my top choice from the "realistic" names listed, but he has rightly refused an interview given that he has a 3 year deal with Swansea

Martinez is merely the first manager who has had an interview confirmed, he surely won't get the job

None of these candidates feel right, apart from dream appointment of Guardiola - he is on record as saying that for young players, Liverpool is the best destination after Barca, possible based on the fact that Seguera and Borrell are with us. Pipe dream though

I personally think Guardiola will return to Barca in next 18 months

Vocal supporter groups could help the return of Rafa - there would be far worse appointments

MANAGER'S JOB IS A POISONED CHALICE. EVERYONE CAN WISH FOR THE VERY BEST THAT
EUROPE HAS TO OFFER BUT WHAT IS PROBABLY NEEDED, AT LEAST IN THE SHORT TERM, IS
SOMEONE TOTALLY EXPERIENCED IN THE TRIALS

AND TRIBULATIONS THAT GO WITH LIFE IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE (INCLUDING HOW TO
DEAL WITH THOSE PESKY SKY AND NEWSPAPER JOURNALISTS). LET'S BE HONEST, LFC IS
JUST NOT THE FORCE IT ONCE WAS. GIVEN ITS CURRENT STATUS AND REQUIREMENTS, IT
SHOULD AT LEAST BE CONSIDERING APPROACHES TO NEIL WARNOCK AND MICK McCARTHY.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Not keen on rafa coming back myself, but that was an excellent post.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Yep. This club needs bringing back down to earth, we aren't in a ideal position for your Capellos, Mourinhos, Hiddinks, Van Gaals, etc. We are in a shitty place on and off the pitch, nowhere near those guys ideal scenario when managing a club. I don't think we are as good as we think are, hence why I have gone for the 'less-fashionable' names.

    ReplyDelete
  126. were u in athens when it was cryin out for pc and cb to brought on  well i was  and it didnt happen  rb do us afavor stay well away from LFC

    ReplyDelete
  127. Wouldn't want Pardew, think this season is a one-off for him, Martinez for me is not going to be able to take us forward,we will not be able to attract a really big name I don't think either, which in a sense leaves me in agreement with you in as much as we need someone not in the main spotlight but my choice would be Holloway fom Blackpool just think he would be able to get the best out of the existing squad and any new cheaper-end arrivals. I know it won't happen, but just feel the guy is a motivator, which is what we are going to need!

    ReplyDelete
  128. I think with Pardew, his success is linked with the work of the scouting team too, hence my little requirement on scout Carr. So don't get me wrong, he is by no means perfect and that I would prefer him to come with Carr.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Rafa is the only one for me and LFC. YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  130. OK,but still not convinced even with the scout, even though it won't happen what about Holloway? Or someone similar, other than the names already on the table, none of the candidate's in the running right now really inspire me! and I suppose if I am totally honest out of all of them it would have to be Rafa only because he know's the landscape so to speak, but even then I have reservations !

    ReplyDelete
  131. BillyJean69, I do not have an allegiance to any manger and I
didn’t have time to argue the points made in your rambling diatribe.  Your original post had so much conjecture, hearsay
and opinion in it, it would be hard to know where to start.  What I will say however, is you point to some
of the cheap or free signings that Rafa made and say they were crap, fair
call.  But that’s the situation Rafa had
to deal with, he didn’t have the money to spend so he had to try to uncover
bargains.  So for expensive signings - ,
Alonso, correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t Rafa sign him in the first
place?  Crouch, didn’t he play for 18 or
so games without getting a goal?  Hardly
frozen out in my opinion.  Keane?  Really, it’s Rafas fault that Keane wasn’t successful?  HE WAS CRAP!
Where is Keane now, setting the world alight in the MLS after loans at
Celtic and West Ham.  Wow, we should sign
him again.  How can you say that Rafa
totally messed with the defence?  We had
an amazing defensive record under Rafa.
Rafa turned amazing players in average players?  Like Gerrard?
    Torres?  Mascherano?  Alonso?

Yes, he made some bad signings, but nowhere near as bad as
KK.  Yes, he rotated a lot, but we won
games, we were in the CL every year, we were competitive and did not fear any
team in the world.  So we were dysfunctional,
confused and dispirited when we put 4 past Man U, Real Madrid, Arsenal and
    Chelsea in almost consecutive games?

I don’t have wood for Rafa, but in the 20 or so years that I have
followed Liverpool, he was the manager who got us closest to the league and we
won trophies as well.  It was not one or
    the other.

So, maybe he’s not the right manager, but it seems to me he is
probably one of the best available.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Are you Winnie the Pooh in disguise, because he can't spell either.

    ReplyDelete
  133. We should break the bank and lure the current england manager Have you seen his CV? Inter, Malmo, IK Oddevold, Orebro and other places that lack consonants have benefitted from his experience, why not us?

    ReplyDelete
  134. I think I heard that Klopp has declined a move?

    ReplyDelete
  135. What about the 2 we lost the season before that?

    ReplyDelete
  136. I think that you are wrong about twice, we were in it from 2005-2010.  I hardly think that the last season was indicative of Rafas reign

    ReplyDelete
  137. what is the fascination with avb? forget what he did in portugal.  has everyone who wants him, had their short term memory taken away? does nobody remember his successful stint at chelsea? he was great there, so good, that he effectively put them in a position, where they missed out on the champs lge!! now i thought our owners main objective was to get into that competition? if so, why the hell would we want a proven premiership failure? how many examples of cons rather than pros, do people need to see, to realise it would be madness to even consider bringing rafa back?

    ReplyDelete
  138. Shame if it's true. Would be my first choice.

    ReplyDelete
  139. will he get 4th? no, so he will be sacked at the end of the season!

    ReplyDelete
  140. It will sound mad but i am starting to think what about Steven gerrard and a carragher partnership. As they are still playing and are senior in the dressing room they can lead by example. the only down side will be if carragher keep playing himself till he is 40!! lol seriously though AVB, yes done a great job at porto but he is the same age nearly as carra. Unless we get benitez, klopp, capello, pep, morinho or a manager of this calibre then for me if they are going to gamble, give stevie gerrad a go. he has routinely grabbed games by the cruff of the neck as a player so why not do it as a player manager. it may just bring out the best in him and people around him. he would be best placed to make a change if he knew people where not having a good game. if it went south at least he could just fall back into playing and snap up a manager quick!!! if its martinez or bust, i choose gerrard wit hsteve clark giving advice!

    ReplyDelete
  141. yes i agree a huge megaflop he would be a disaster

  145. pep wont coach henderson, downing and spearing after he has coached messi, xavi and iniesta.

  146. Billy Jean was a tennis player
Gerrard was already a top player and so was Torres and Mascherano.
Rafa signed Keane whether he was crap or not.
He lost the dressing room in the end didnt qualify for the CL and only once in 7 years challenged for the title.
And he signed Aquilani who you didnt mention.
In my time we challenged for the title and didnt set out for fourth place which seems to be the only target of most of you now.

    ReplyDelete
  147. there was no electricity in my air nor is he the best choice.

    ReplyDelete
  148. According to reports, Liverpool plan to
interview a dozen different candidates for the manager's job to ensure every
viable contender is considered. Insiders tell me the American owners are
actually closer to making an appointment than many believe but have been busy
deciding precisely which scientific method they will use to whittle those 12
names down to that all important one. A tombola or a dartboard?

What on earth is happening at Liverpool?
Having sacked pretty much everyone in a position of authority over the past
couple of weeks barring their beleaguered chief executive, the club appear to
have resorted to drawing random names out of a revolving drum and then cold
calling them to see if they fancy moving to Merseyside.

  149. I honestly dont think fourth is an achievement or target (but it is better than 8th).  I agree Gerrard was already good, but Rafa got the best out of him, he was scoring <10 a season before Rafa came and this increased to ~20.  Torres was unproven, and definitely not the goal machine he was under Rafa.  We signed Mascherano from West Ham.  No offence to west ham, but he took a huge step up at Liverpool and he delivered.  Aquilani... honestly, I just don't know about him.  He may have done well given an other season, and he is undoubtedly talented.
I totally agree with you, the last Rafa season, was shocking, but I think there was a lot going on in the background.  His last season was no worse than what we have has since, and the rest of his tenure was ultimately better.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Sorry, just to add, re Keane, he was the captain of Spurs, it's not like Rafa took a gamble on him.  He should have done much better, and I doubt there was many people out there who thought he would be as bad as he was.  I thought he was a great signing.  He was not!

    ReplyDelete
  151. Real Sociedad? So why was he playing with them if he was so great? Wasn't on Spain's list from what I remember, and if he was that great he would have went to madrid or barca rather than Liverpool, but he didn't because?

Just give me one player who we could really attract now at this stage?

And let's say that they were amazing before Rafa bought them, then that means Rafa was a good magnet for players, right?

Based on our last two managers who cam after Rafa, from all there signings, there are only two players who would find themselves in any team around the world, Meriles (credit to Roy) and Jose (credit to KK), but all the others would dream to play with a team like Liverpool and especially with the amount we paid for them!!

Come on guys be reasonable, I am not with Rafa or anyone, I am with Liverpool, but studying the facts it is obvious that Rafa was our best during our Premiere League era. Stop living in the past as our history will bye us minimum respect with the brave new world. We need someone who can make us look strong, not someone who would make us look like a mid tabe team who would believe Carling Cup is silverware!!

  152. Right, mister. Quite obvious what i meant but some people take things literally on purpose or by accident. First of all, I wasn't calling Liverpool, the place, shitty. Secondly, Nor was I calling the club shitty. Thirdly, I was calling the state of affairs at the club shitty. Fourthly, I was there 2 months ago, yep I'm a unashamed 80s Liverpool glory hunter.

  153. Rafa wanted Keane but only if Barry came as well as that was a part of his tactical plan for the season (said in a interview in 2009). When Barry didn't come, he was stuck with Keane and childishly, (from the outside looking in) he didn't really bother integrating Keane into the side tactically. A pity really, that Keane was never really given a proper go by Rafa, just because Rafa didn't get Barry.
