"I want to stay" - £10m LFC target reveals Premier League dream. Bid?

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish recently visited the Liberty stadium to watch in-demand Swansea star Gylfi Sigurdsson in action. The Icelandic international is coveted by several top clubs in the Premier League, including Liverpool and Manchester United, and yesterday, he once again reiterated his desire to stay in the Premier League.

£10m-rated Sigurdsson has grabbed seven goals and two assists in fifteen starts for Swansea this season, and e's desperate to continue his Premier League adventure.

In an interview with Setanta Sports yesterday, he said:

"All I can say is what I have said. I want to stay in the Premier League. I have always wanted to play in this league from when I young. It will all be sorted one way or the other in the summer."

Sigurdsson is undoubtedly playing well for Swansea, but I'm not 100% convinced a move would be wise. After the Andy Carroll debacle, is it wise to spend big bucks on a player with limited exposure of top-flight English football?

  1. good player but i think we need better than him if we are going to push on.i feel it could be another charlie adam case where a player plays well for a smaller club but can't make the step up to the next level.

  2. We need players with 10 times his quality he has played a hole season in the prem with reading but never really got going players of his quality and consistancey are not needed as we have henderson adam and downing for that

  3. i agree, i think we need proven talent, maybe even sacrificing the buy young policy just to get some experience and maturity on the pitch. who is a whole different question. will be a interesting summer in several aspects, although i am not going to lift my expectations as high as last summer.

  4. I think the expectations are all time low, most people seeing anyone better than downing and adam are already thinking about a transfer, i'm worried about us being linked to Bent again. btw i think Gylfi is not a bad option, shows promise and has guts unlike hendo

  5. I have followed this player for a while. 10 million is a bargain

  6. Got to agree with the other comments, but where do we get the money for the better players? We don't have a rich Arab or Russian oligarch, or  these days the pull that will entice good young players like the Arsenals and dare I say it the Manure. Too many lean years and atrocious management have put paid to our reputation.  We now don't have a manager with the contacts that might bring in good players from the continent.  So it's a case of the kids stepping up to the plate until we can get new owners with real mone and creative accountants.

  7. I hope he reads these pages because we really want him to stay at Swansea.

  8. Titi_Camara. Talking about a step up to the next level and Liverpool in the same sentence. Does'nt quite add up. Are Liverpool a step up ????? Some how don't think so. If Gylfi's going anywhere it will be to Swansea, where he knows he fits in to their style of football and he'll play most weeks. Just remember who played you of the park at home and had a standing ovation from the home crowd. Gylfi to score the winner on Sunday and give you you're worst league position in many a year.

  9. He is the creative midfielder that we need. He is so good that he could replace Gerrard in the future!

  10. Worth the risk at £10m, not worth the risk at £35m.

  11. On a irrelevant note, Juve win the title and their best player has probably been new boy Vidal. Anyone who watched Bundesliga would know that he was a really good player and a ideal PL player, before he went to Juve. Juve picked him up for around £10m, hardly a bank breaker. Players like these can be found for reasonable money and be top players. Frustrating we spend £20m on Downing, £16-20m Hendo and £35m on Carroll, yet there are good players out there for reasonable money.

Dempsey only got a year left on his contract. Yes, he isn't young but at the end of the day, we have to prepare for the short term, not just the long term.

  12. He is the kind of player that people will say isn't up to Liverpool standard or we need more PL experience which is fair enough. But then if he goes to a team like Newcastle and keeps performing people will say why didn't we sign him!!
It's a risk signing unproven players but at some point you can't go chucking huge amounts around every day

  13. Too bad...the boy is not a Brit and he does not ply his trade in England. This is out of KD's ability to scout him. I'm just wondering when will FSG ask him to go. Any transfer activity before that makes me lose sleep.

  14. Given the present financial situation at LFC, we need a manager in the mold of Arsene Wenger. He is a genius that knows how to spot and convert unknown youngsters into world class players. Just give him 10 mil pounds to bring in 2 players and after 3-5 years, he can sell them for 30-50 mil. That's how Arsenal can afford to build a new stadium. Sadly, that's the gulf in standard between the 2 clubs right now, in terms of capability of manager, stadium, finance and league position.

We cannot afford to throw another 100 mil pounds this coming summer and at the end of next season saying we need a world class striker,  winger or defender etc. How many 100 mil pounds can FSG afford? It only takes 400 mil pounds to build a new stadium. A third of it being spent on players but bring them the League Cup and 8th to 10th position in the league. I really don't think LFC has spent little money on players over the years. It's just that we never have a manager that knew how to earn money through transfer activities for the LFC.

Talking about this boy, he may well end up like those one-season or half-season wonders at LFC right now. It will be a good gamble if he cost 3-5 mil pounds and definitely not in the 10 mil pounds range. We have all been twitched in some way that 10 mil pounds is small money. Why do we always have to buy from another EPL club? Is it because our dear manager has no capacitiy to look beyond that? Kagawa was plucked from Japan by Dortmund for 350k pounds. There are way too many good unproven players around the world but who has the eyes and guts to bring them in? Maybe I'm too old-fashioned and outdated in the football world. I still thinks that players cost 5 mil pounds downwards are prospect young players and 15 mil pounds upwards are star players. unfortunately my outdated views do not coincide with the manager at LFC and fans over here.

LFC really have to buy careful for next season. FSG may not be capable or willing to splurge another fortune on players after this catastrophic season. Neither will LFC gets more tv revenue money next season after this one. FSG must also prepare another sum of money if they are going to change manager.

Good Luck, LFC, for the next season!

  15. If it happened, then more likely commit suicide for Kenny. This type of approach wont help the club. I have had enough of Adam, Henderson.

  16. its all pot luck, gaston ramirez looks top draw but may hate L4 and never settle. mertens, de jong+ ramirez seem to be genuine targets.

  17. Probably wouldn't get a work permit, if we tried to sign Kagawa when he was in Japan. For e.g., Arsenal didn't sign Yaya when he was younger because he didn't have a European passport at the time and he hadn't fulfilled the work permit criteria at the time. British clubs don't/can't often buy non-EU young players for a reason

  18. CHARLIE ADAM SYNDROME, PLAYS WELL ONE SEASON,IF HE DOES IT AGAIN AND AGAIN,THEN FAIR ENOUGH,BUT SECOND SEASONS ARE ALWAYS TOUGHER. YES SWANSEA DID GET AN OVATION,I WAS THERE GIVING IT TOO,WELL DESERVED. DOESN'T MATTER WHERE WE FINISH NOW,IT ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH. ANYWAY, WHY ARE YOU ON HERE? WHY DON'T YOU FOLLOW YOUR OWN TEAM? PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE A JOKE,I BET YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN TO SEE YOUR OWN TEAM! PATHETIC!

  19. He has not played for Reading in Prem..and only been at Swansea since January..

  20. As KD will be sacked next week I doubt whether this will come to anything unless the new manager wants him.
I think also Roberto Martinez is a hell of a manager.

  21. We don't need another average player, Downing was great when he was at Aston Villa and look at him now.We need players who are not just good performers but who can handle the pressure of a big club and deliver consistently .

  22. 'who can handle the pressure of a big club and deliver'

players who have proven this, usually cost a lot of money.

  23. I can see where you are coming from. You are probably right about Kagawa. But still there are way too many unproven but good players that are available for British clubs, not only to LFC in particular. RVP for 3.25 mil pounds, Vidic for 7 mil pounds and Fabregas are some successful examples in EPL, LFC has its own in Alonso and Lucas. I hope Coates can be another positive example in some time soon.

  25. I think he'd be a good signing:

Knowledge of English football (played for a few other English teams before Swansea).

Would add goals to our midfield.

Hoffenheim's player of the season last year.

Would presumably be affordable since Hoffenheim loaned him out.

    Wages would be comparatively low.

    Young player.

  26. This season's Charlie Adam.

Hoffenheim's player of the year, so why are they loaning him out this year? Something doesn't seem right. It is a position where we are overloaded in any case.
