Confirmed: LFC scouts meet Mexican wing starlet. Replace Downing?

After the underwhelming performance of Stewart Downing this season, Liverpool will hopefully prioritise the signing of an effective winger this summer. The search has seemingly already begun because according to the Executive Director of Mexican club Pachuca, Liverpool are interested 21 year old winger Hector Herrera.

In a recent interview with ESPN, Andres Fassi claimed that the youngster could become 'one of the Premier League's best players in two or three seasons', and confirmed that he is being watched by Liverpool. He said:

"At the moment, we know that Liverpool is interested. Liverpool's people came to Mexico on a general scouting trip, there's a declared interest in Herrera. [Herrera] can surely be one of the Premier League's best players in two or three seasons. He's that good."

Herrera then confirmed that he's met with Liverpool Scouts:

"I was only introduced to him [the Liverpool scout], he didn't tell me anything specific. I found out about the [Liverpool interest], I haven't been told anything concrete yet and I'll have to wait to see what [Fassi] says about it. "

"I think it's a great opportunity, it's one of my dreams to play in Europe."

Herrera was nominated for the Mexico league's 'Golden Ball' in 2011, an award that recognises the country's best talent.

  1. he should fit into the lfc squad well , as he not scored no goals if we try hard we should be able to pay 20mil plus for him

  6. Silly story and a poor link to Downing.  First of all we are on the look out for a right sided winger not a left.  Secondly he's been scouted like many many other players world wide.  Replace Downing?  Have you not read/listened to KK he is right behind his signings and while I am not exactly raving about Downing's start at LFC he'll need time, just like Carroll (who looks like he is finally turning the corner).

  7. We live in hope that someone at the club will soon realise, after paying 20m for a prem ready player, downing is still not ready for the (semi) big time, and never will be.
Carroll is trying at least,, has curbed his thug like lifestyle and wants to come good. downing on the other hand is as bad as mark walters, diouf and nunez and needs to be sold while he still has some sell on value.
when was the last time not one player came good after a lavish summer spend? probably GH's diouf, diao and cheyrou debacle.

Kenny was also right behind Hodgson......before he replaced him as manager.  I'm not saying Kenny is a liar, just what he says in public is part of the LFC PR machine.

  10. To my understanding, he is right-footed and plays right wing or on the right of centre midfield.

  11. How is a 21 yr old with virtually no experience going to walk straight into a premiership team and make a significant difference? Squad player maybe, but that's it.

Downing, Henderson etc will be given another year to develop before we jettison them (Henderson is only 20 and I remember Lucas being slaughtered when he first came)and we need 3 or 4 good quality players. Dalglish has to get it spot on this time though.

  12. risky. completely different league. but javier hernandez did it. These players go from south america and play in europe for a few season then they are big stars and cost a lot. One that springs to mind are Aguero at athletic madrid. Prob didn't cost over 15M originally. He was quality in La liga..  why not. However, we do need proven ability for next season. We don't need 'for the future' players. we are sinking without even a whimper.....

  13. Liverpool payed stupid money for Downing as there was no contest for his signature and Villa just sold Young and were uninterested in letting him go and there was cheaper and better option like Vargas but his experience in PL was thought to be one of his quality's, as he would fit right in .

     Well, he didn't.

  14. I wish to God we could replace or sack you.

  15. We need another winger so this would be good!

  16. Your articles appear well written, however, that is because they have been written by other people at an earlier point. You tend to rehash old news and label it as "new".

  17. That's the way reds, get them before they sign for the Spanish or Portuguese clubs, hijackers!!!

  18. him being right behind his signings is nothing more than stubbornness from KD... the whole world can see they're not good enough, so why cant he see it and admit it? if he doesn't admit his signings were mistakes soon and replace them, then we are only going to fall further down the spectrum. it's his stubbornness that has cost us this season and its time people recognised that, instead of constant sentiment.. results are what matters

  19. we must do all we can to sign adam johnson, the lad is class. and maybe a bid for walcott if we have the cash. clint dempsey to replace gerrard, he just dont have the energy levels to play at the top of his game week in week out. and again id like a player like nigel de jong, alongside lucas.
and a left back.   not askin for much eh!!

  20. We need to bolster the squad and any competition for places would be a good thing, Downing should stay IMO, he can fight for his place for another season, no point off loading him unless we get a very decent offer, this fella sounds like a good prospect and we seem to be linked to many foreign players lately....

Maybe we need a load more to keep poor Reina Suarez and Enrique etc happy.....

  21. Downing didnt do so good the first season with Villa. Maybe  next seaons he will come good.

  22. The main difference is one cost 5 mil pounds and another cost 16-20 mil pounds. SD will be 28 next year with a 20 mil pounds price tag firmly round his neck. Player cost more than 15 mil pounds are considered players for the future shows how money has depreciated in football world or in the perspective of LFC. FSG must be kicking their own balls for such a blind investment in buying LFC.

  23. with Roy in charge now, they probably will!!!

  24. Some of the comments on here do make me laugh. So we should just keep giving these players 'another season' in the blind hope that they'll will eventually come good 'just like Lucus'. Well if we follow that model we'll be in the championship before we know it where the stars will no doubt be Henderson and Downing. So sad how far we've dropped and how the fans are more and more accepting of this. God i'm depressed today. To Gagnuaga above - Downing is an England International (lol - was), in his peak age and has contributed a total of 0 goals and 0 assists in the league this season. What part of that sentance is acceptable to LFC? Just so frustrated right now  :(

  25. Hernandez did it???

I remember him bursting on the scene 2 years ago or so and having a good run but since then hes been poor...People were referring to him as a bigger talent than Owen when he broke on the scene absolute tosh....

  26. He didnt exactly set the world alight after his first season either...

  27. another player we are wasting money on. ones and for all go and get 3 or 4 good proven players. otherwise same story next year. i think we will end up with players like lee cattermole or darren bent again. never learn their lesson season after season. poorly run club with sub standard management.

    ReplyDelete
  28. i think our scouting system need an overhaul. we seem to scout young players for the academy, but never for the first team? this is fine to a point, but when the youngsters don't get much of a chance, this suggests they are not good enough, which in turn suggests, the scouting and coaching is below standard? what little gems have we picked up recently, for what would be considered a 'bargain'?  enrique? maybe to a point, but if that is as far as our network stretches (tyneside),then we are in trouble. he was in their first team so that didn't need much work. utd, newcastle, everton, spurs, have all got good, effective, players cheap. our scouts need to up their game massively, we need a new geoff twentyman, urgently.

    ReplyDelete
  29. absolute total speculation and tabloid rumour, you can pick up any newspaper any day of the week and have players all over the world linked to English clubs. Until you see them at Melwood undergoing a medical then thats the time to start getting excited. I also think Liverpool will not buy any player until until KD's fate is decided.
I think he will go as FSG are ruthless and dont dwell on sentiment as they showed recently with the most succesful Boston Red Sox manager ever.
A new manager will want his own players in not some Mexican some obscure Liverpool scout happened to see.

  30. Yeah your name sounds proper Welsh mate...

  31. What we need is top quality strikers.. Gonzalo Higuain and Diego Milito, that should do it. Wide players.. I agree Adam Johnson (more than decent) and Victor Moses should sort that out. 1 centre mid get Diarra from Fulham or Keita from Barca to play alongside Lucas and we got a team fighting for the Prem.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Gilligan you would be from island right?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wrong Diarra...we need Lassana Diarra from Real Madrid, who has been on the "available list" for 12 months (if rumours & speculative journalism is to be believed) and at around £8m.

Considering that when he does get a look in at RM he still looks class.....

We missed out on Van Der Vaart after being "linked" with him for 18 months or so, let's not miss out on Lass....who I much prefer over Keita....

  34. Mexico have a few promising youngsters it seems, looking at their results in their younger squads, so, like Uruguay, seems to be a country with potentially very good players who can be obtained for less than the extortionate british rate.
