Liverpool Manager Kenny Dalglish and his Assistant, Steve Clarke, have flown to Boston for crunch talks with FSG.
Dalglish and Clarke were originally due to submit written reports to account for Liverpool's atrocious league season, but after yesterday's defeat at Swansea - the club's 14th league loss of the season - it seems that the review meeting has been moved up. According to my source:

I am still wanting KD to have another season as I believe that some one should be given time and allowed to hang themselves if it goes all bad and also on the other bring success if possible. cutting a manger when there is still a 50/50 split between fans makes it bad. The 50% calling for KD's head this year will be the 50% backing a new manager if he fails next year and saying things like' its his first season, give him time' and likewise the other 50% who still wanted KD will be on the back of the new manager if he does not achieve 4th in his first season. TO be honest if KD stays then at least all the players that are good will stay, if he goes, it may just be the excuse surez, skrtel, agger, renia, kuyt maxi need to say, I am not staying for another supposed 5 yr plan. Dalglish should get no money but shoudl instead havr to do deals by selling and playing youth, this means if another manager is needed next year they have considerable funds. In conclusion, if liverpool do get rid of KD and do not install someone that will dramatically improve our results and get us into top 4 next season, well you know where the blogs will be going and the ones who wanted the change will have be the ones who will be hypocritically having to defend a manager that would of achieved exactly the same as KD, this is why i want KD for another year, if he fails he is out and 100% will move on, if he is succesfull well we will never need to utter such negativity and we can all eat humble pie!

ReplyDeleteUnderstand where you are coming from, but for me, KD was supposed to bring the passion back. Last year after Roy he did a good job of getting everyone to play together. Yet this has been lost since, and the team spirit and desire has dropped off a cliff since 2012. All for giving time, but failure to maintain spirit when that is supposed to be what you are bringing to the party, means that I don't feel the KD can turn it round.

Rafa is not the answer and Martinez has won a couple of games against big teams with a rubbish side and finished 3 places above the relegation zone. He is not a saviour. We should get behind our club AND our manager or we will end up like Chelsea having a new boss every 5 minutes. We have had some bad luck in the league this season BUT we have finished with some silverware and 3 trips to Wembley. A few additions to the squad and we will be fine!

ReplyDeleteIt's time for a change. Dalglish did all he could do but it did not work out. I have not seen liverpool play like this for a very long time and that hurts all liverpool fans. It's not paying the price but for the best interest of the club. I for one do not see any hope for those below par players who have to be changed as well. It's no use beating a dead horse.

Many times. I only live 3 hours away. Admittedly, I don't to games as much as I used to. Part of the reason is to protest against football greed, but since my stalker (2 years and counting) posted pictures of me online, I've been recognised in the stands (on two occasions) by a couple of irate fans who hate this site (probably RAWK members). It was just typical mouthy yobs, but things could've gotten out of hand.

It is not 'plastic' to believe that Kenny is not the right person to take the club forward from where we are now. Most of us who feel that it is time to have a new manager are not knee-jerk reacting but considering this carefully. What distresses me is that Kenny seems to think that everything is down to bad luck. I was embarrassed when he referred to the the refereeing 'conspiracy' a few weeks ago. It is these things that make me feel it is time to change. I always felt it was just a short-term idea to have Kenny back, though I never thought there would be some of the performances we have seen at Anfield this season, so now I feel 18months is right rather than 30 months. I believe we do need a really long-term prospect now. I really do like the idea of Martinez. He is learning fast, and if he was appointed, I admit he would need time to continue to learn at Anfield, but I think he has the quality to bring real success and give us a bit of PR credibility too with the Press. Those who complain that he has not yet managed at the highest level, Shankly came from Huddersfield... I write this with deep respect for Kenny. FSG should retain him, of course, but in an ambassador capacity because he loves the club so much.

Its because of the almighty KD that players like kuyt & maxi want to leave, he plays the AWFUL hendo & downing instead of proven scorers & work horses like the afore mentioned 2 & this is the big problem with the angry scot! ReplyDeleteSeeing the last few weeks unfold is surely like watching one of those Scream films. One by one, your friends and the people you know are bumped off....and then there's just you....Question is, will Kenny survive?
I only hope that if they decide to keep him, they back him with a reasonable amount of funds. If they sack him, I hope they've done their research and get someone decent in. No stop gap managers, but the young manager they originally envisioned. They will still have to back him with funds to improve the team.

ReplyDeleteKenny is a good man... and his intentions are admirable... even his re-building process is understandable... but his on-field tactics have a lot to be desired... does he know what his best 11 is? Does he make the right decisions that change the course of a game? One thing is that he was never able to arrest the dismal home form... And even though the signs were there in the 1H of the season... we never got a striker to help us convert those chances for the 2H... Unfortunately the league table does not lie... and seeing Man City win the league yesterday show's that we are so far away from where we want to be. I would not want him replaced by any manager untested at this level... For all of Benitez's failings, when it mattered he built a system and bought players to fit. He was a big game manager, cool under pressure and has the heart for Liverpool that Kenny has.

b) He will continue, as per his contract (to 2014), and they will then reflect on the season, discuss required transfer budget, targets & departures and influence/support the DoF recruitment process.
My point exactly, why not give KD three years? The owners, and fans have to lower their expectations, top 4 in a season is not possible anymore, a team needs to gel, no matter how much you spend. Correct me if I'm wrong but did City make top 4 on their first season after the Sheikh took over?

Is he blind that he can't see the player of the season and indeed other key players requesting to leave! Here we are faced with a situation where the coaching crew and the players have gotten so used to defeats both from big and small teams, and yet he wants to stay put courtesy of his legendary status . Dear Kenny, instigating some fickle minded fans against our beloved club/owners is not in the best interest of the same club which you love and have served dearly. I think KK knows that he made mistakes and bougtht the wrong players and handled a few situations badly. Can you blame him for backing his players and for being so passionate for the club that he will die for? I also think he made a lot of mistakes but i don't believe that he needs to be sacked.

What I like aboout John Henry is that he doesn't just fire the Manager, he looks at the background staff as well, they are just as much to blame. Look at Alex Ferguson his job was on the line before Untied really became a force to reckon with, they decided to keep him for another season and he turned things around.
being unlucky in a few games is one thing but through out the whole season is completly something else you lot will believe anything. instant success is what we have a right to demand especially seeing as we spen 120mill on a winger who scored:0 and got 0 assists let me guess that was unlucky.
ReplyDeleteI have mixed feelings about Dalglish. Part of me wants him to stay because our football in most parts of the pitch has improved. The other part of me wants him to go because I doubt how good he is psychologically at the top.
ReplyDeleteI attribute a lot of the mistakes LFC have made to psychological problems. eg. the massive amount we have hit the woodwork is due to overcompensation. Overcompensation stems from inferiority complex, and it is safe to say that over the course of the season, our players have been wildly inconsistent, afraid to take risks (stemming from inferiority) and playing out of character. This has stultified Dalglish and Clarke's good work in the training ground. The problem is that Dalglish seemed to be suffering from this too, as is evident from his escapist interviews given after the match.
Tactically, Dalglish has not convinced me a lot either. If a change is to come, then we better get a manager who is tactically and psychologically savvy. That has been our Achilles heel since Rafa left, possibly even longer than that. I believe it has also been the main difference between LFC and Man.UTD. Man for man, we are not that inferior to them.

Based on that further average english players will probably arrive over the summer such as D.Bent. !!These players cannot handle the pressure of playing for a big club!!!!
All that being said the basis for a good squad is there, 3 world class players or more is needed for us to push on.

i don't think that Rafa is the best man for the job, He had his chance . He went to Inter and couldn't hack it over there. Granted the Inter owner is a raging lunatic. I think that Liverpool should move in a new direction if we want to bring in a good manager.

ReplyDeleteKenny got us a finish last season many didn't think possible after the terrible start, and he got us playing some good football. This season we've continued to play good football for the most part, but have failed to convert chances - this can be fixed. Yes, we finished 8th this season, but we played good football and showed what we could do if we could get finishing off the many chances we create. He got us to 2 out of 2 cup finals, and won one of them.
Surely the fact that we are now playing better football and the fact we won our first silverware in 6 years is a sign of progress? Andy Carroll is now returning to his best, and some of the other signings are showing some improvement - surely Kenny should be given another year to see if we can continue this progress under his leadership?

I do thank him in bring in Alonso, Torres, Mashareno and a few others. I think he must have been suffering from some sort of mental illness when he suggested he tried to replace Alonso with Gareth Barry. The two players are not comparable.
ReplyDeletePoints in the league hasn't been great i agree, but see the bigger picture guys......most chances created, most woodwork hits, most shots OFF target, most time in the oppostitions halves.....we really just need a couple of quality signings and a few tweeks (maybe a good striking coach) etc and we aint a million miles away. On paper we are on par with 'scum'....give kenny time please. rome wasn't built in a day!! (oh and 1billion was spent at city and 3 yrs for them to win the league) so TIME is the key.....in kenny i trust :-) YNWA is our motto so lets not let kenny walk alone back upstairs.

I know from a good source that Comolli although he has been sacked does not like Benitez, and the feeling is mutual, Comolli had Werner and Henry's ear and poisoned them to any thoughts of Benitez coming back, so unless there is a great change of heart do not expect Rafa to return.

ReplyDeleteI agree though to give him more time, rome wasnt built in a day and the stats are there to see we are making plenty of chances etc, just a few tweeks and a couple of quality signings and we're not a million miles away.
Everton may have finished 4 points above us but technically they achieved it by playing their best ever football compared to our dross of a season, team that with the fact we knocked them out of the FA cup semi and the fact we have a trophy to show for our season and I'd say we have finished the better mersyside team :-) YNWA and in kenny i trust.

i have no problem with martinez but the sudden lusting after him to take the job is ridiculous.
Regarding Alonso, the season before Alonso was sold when he had played crap, Arsenal offered 18m for him, and Rafa said no.
ReplyDeleteThe season later after Alonso had been brilliant, Real came in with a bid of 18m and Alonso wanted to go, but Rafa said no Arsenal offered 18m when you had been rubbish and so the fee is now 35m, we eventually sold for 30m

ReplyDeleteHope they convince Dalglish to stand down. Problem is, I am not sure these guys are getting good advice as to who to bring in next. But, whoever it is, he will probably have more people after him than Dalglish does. Like a girlfriend, when no one is interested in your manager, you know that you could do better.
He's done a decent job with players who cost very little and got them playing good football. Still think O'Neill is the man to bring guaranteed progress, though, he has everywhere else he has gone. If our owners like statistics, he is the man to do the job.
ReplyDeleteNo one is bigger than the club, which means your support for Liverpool club shouldn't (IMO) end just because someone you don't like might be taking over the club. I never particularly liked Roy and Kenny, but I supported the club nonetheless. I hope that you will still stay as a Liverpool supporter no matter what happens during this upcoming summer.

Clarke must take some of the blame he is the hands on coach, were Kenny is more of a man manager.
The players, they have been woeful at times, and need a good kick up the ass.
The management team for the Suarez debacle, which could have and should have been handled far better.
Comoli for some of the prices paid for signings which were far to high.
And lastly lady luck which a sadly left Liverpool cruelly this year.

Next season is another matter, a few shrewd signings in key positions and i believe we will be up there again challenging.

ReplyDeleteYeah while "the times have changed and it will take a few years to acheive blah blah blah," players like Gerrard and Carragher ain't getting any younger. I don't think they want to wait a few years for LFC to improve before they lift the league trophy do you? I am ashamed that you are a fan of the club because you are comfortable in redefining the standard of success in LFC. If we now set the bar lower for Daglish because he was a Liverpool legend then we open the door to lower level finishes and possible relegation battles in future seasons to come. What you need to also understand is that the competition in the premiere league is getting better every year just ask Man U. We don't have the time to wait for our squad to get it together. That dream or fantasy you hold in your head of a multi-year rebuilding project is not realistic. Liverpool bought a lot of young teenage talent in the past two windows and these players represent the future. Nobody was brought in who went into the first team in January. What is needed now are players who can make an immediate impact today and not some future date. Clearly first teamers purchased by Kenny last summer have failed in that capacity.

ReplyDeleteIm certainly not a blinkered LFC fan!! but I honestly believe you lot should keep KD, unless a top, top manager becomes available.
I wont deny its been a poor season for LFC and Kenny is responsible for some of it, my view is that if Suarez hadnt acted like a tool, you would have done much better. Negative press doesnt cost you points, but having your best player suspended for ages does. And it might make you edgy enough to hit the post a bunch of times...the affair certainly must have affected the relationship between Suarez and KD, also between KD and the Yanks.
Its not all rosy at the moment, and I know you appear to have overpaid for several players, but you have defended well and been quite unlucky in front of goal. Surely its worth a go with Kenny until Xmas? A modest transfer budget would minimize the risk. Hes a LFC legend, I think he deserves one more try.
Seems hard to believe that they would pay to fly KD and SC to Boston to fire them (haven't they heard of SKYPE?). I think it is more of an ultimatum: here's what we demand by end of next season...or else...and here'$$$ what you have to work with.

ReplyDeleteSo not very many great losses. Aquilani probably would have played under Rafa. Lost money on R.Keane but not that much and by most accounts he didn't want him. Also when it was clear it was not working he got rid of him for a decent amount rather than persisiting with dross (see KD with Downing). Other than that most were sold for profit or marginal losses. Your use of the stats is worse than a tabloid. If you take into consideration the sales of Rafa players since he left we are probably fairly close to a 0 nett spend. How many of KD's signings would bring a profit?

And yes, El Zhar was somebody else Rafa rated. At least KD was a great player and great manager first time around - Rafa is a total incompetent whose man management skills are zero. Neither Benitez nor KD should be at the helm.

ReplyDeleteI'm guessing you just see everything at face value and fail to see how Rafa had his hands tied towards the end of his reign. THIS MAN PUT US BACK ON THE MAP IN EUROPE. KD NEVER WILL. Still trying to work with a formula that last worked in the mid-90's with Blackburn, and the EPL has changed dramatically. He was fired from Newcastle for dismantling a good team and he's doing it here now. I think he can leave with dignity this summer but if he stays and continues like this he will be fired.
ReplyDeleteRafa remodelled our youth academy and medical facilities. He signed Sterling and Shelvey for less than a quarter of a Charlie Adam. He had a long term plan for the club that was disrupted by the idiot board at the time.
Look at the players he tried to sign to be told there was no money. Players like Alves, Ramos, Simao, Silva.
Also look at Gerrard's stats before Rafa came, whilst he was there and after.
Rafa knew how to get the most out of his players.
Go and read his website once in a while and see how he analyses games. Look at the report on the UEFA cup final, for example. Kenny would just have said Bilbao were unlucky!

ReplyDeleteSheikh Mansoor took over City at the beginning of the 08/09 season, buying Robinho on deadline day and then in January they bought Bridge, Bellamy and Given. None did particularly well and they finished 10th. Worse than the year before. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Dalglish is part of our history ,but obviously is out of time. I truly believe that liverpool is all about winning and playing with pride and passion. unfortunately he splashed big money for ordinary players like JH and SD and i dont think that Spearing is going to make it even at wigan or S nderland . ReplyDeleteAnd Morratti refused to release any funds as they had success under Mourinho but Rafa wanted to inject youth. What happened to Inter AFTER he left? Leanardo was given money and made them much worse. The team Mourinho left were very good but were only use to playing his system. Rafa tried to change that (and it was acknowledged int he Italian media that their style improved) but wasn't given the time -- 6 months because he tried to get Morratti to give him a budget and Morratti didn't want to spend!

ReplyDeleteI have read a lot of comments some are good and some are way off mark. It is a slow day at work so I do have the time. I don't know if many of you here are aware of who the owners of LFC really are. Many of you across the big pond are really not too familiar with the Boston Red sox and the people who own it. If you do know them then you would understand that they are a very ambitious lot. They demand a good performance from the Red Sox every season. Not only that they also fired their coach not too long ago for poor performance in the playoff. That being the case it makes sense that they have asked Daglish to have a heart to heart with them in Boston on the goings on at Anfield this last season.
ReplyDeleteSome people seem to think because Liverpool were fighting bankruptcy and basically relegation not too long ago that we have no business being very competitive now. We should just accept a 9th place finish and just chalk it up as part of the rebuilding process. I say no that. On this very squad are veteran players who want to lift the league cup before they hang up there boots. They would prefer a competitive Liverpool as early as next season.
Coming back to Kenny Daglish I believe he may not be the man for the job at Anfield. He seems to be stuck in a different place in time (may be a more glorious time ) but a different time none the less. The mordern game has completely eluded Daglish. He seems overwhelmed by his job and I believe you see it in his press conference when he gets confrontational with the press. He would have to conduct a 360 degree change to succeed if he is indeed given one more season.
Areas I believe he would need to improve in are the following:
(1) Need to adapt his tactics , reward players who score more with more playing time.
(2) improve the scouting at the club. Last summers signings were disappointing
(3) Keep his composure when talking to the media. It embarrasing to see King Kenny lose his composure. The manager's job at any big club is a pressure cooker.
if Kenny can do these things he will be successful.
If he is fired It won't be a great loss.
And Kenny managed to bring us up the table when there was no pressure. As soon as there was pressure he failed. Lets face it, Roy didn't have Suarez - he's the only reason our 'kick and rush' football under KD looks any good.

His absence from coaching and managing has been made apparent this year.

They obviously don't want a player exodus IF Kenny stays....and yet they probably don't want to bring in a manger who divides opinion either....its a bit of a bind to say the least....
Someone asked earlier why so many fans are now keen on Martinez, the answer as far as i can see is that it is a step forwards.....for me at least Martinez represents a NO vote for rafa to return...
There are it seems 3 types of stance re the managers position atm.
1) Those wanting Kenny to resign/sacked and rafa to return...
2) Those wanting kenny to resign/sacked and Martinez or other(not rafa)...to replace him...
3) Those wanting Kenny to stay.
So what should FSG do?
One solution would be to bring rafa in as DOF and let Kenny continue as manager, this would probably be enough to convince certain players (rafa's admirers...Reina & Co...) to stay, that would be one way out BUT of course it would mean that Rafa would be in a position to confront FSG IF he didn't agree with any proposals etc that they might have.....
We all know that rafa would not be happy in that role as he is ultimately a control freak who would want more and more power eventually.....
Although i have mentioned that Martinez might be a good fit for the Club i couldn't help think about AVB today.....i recall that before Kenny took over the reigns he (AVB) was the manager many LFC fans were talking about....
I would say his credentials are more impressive than Martinez's, the Chelsea episode could easily be forgiven as it seems that the players were instrumental in his sacking....
He's young, his football is attractive, he would represent agood fit for FSG and he's also a manager that was being talked up on Liverpool forums before we got Kenny back on board.....so he would probably get a better reception at the Club and consequently a better chance of succeeding....
Out of all the options we have atm i would say that if i was in FSG's shoes i would go for him, a lot of the fans who want rafa back would probably be okay with AVB and so would many of the fans who want Martinez or other....
In terms of damage limitation which is where i think we are at then that might well be the best bet.
Hasn't Reina got an assist this year?

Cheesy also fails to mention that while Rafa also signed players like El Niño, Alonso, Johnson,Crouch,Reina,Masherano,Skertel,Agger,Kuyt,Garciaand many more KD signed Caroll,Adam,Downing and Henderson for combined fee of 80 million pounds. Most of Rafas players were sold for profit while KD signings we will have to pay someone to take them.
ReplyDeleteLiverpool fans are well known for their support to their manager and the players and especially to one of their club legends like Kenny. I find it hard to believe that this web site has the gall to call itself 'liverpool kop' when it constantly reports on rumours and stories which are detrimental to the club.
ReplyDeleteYou are right , Roy did not have Suarez but he had Torres and Mereiles who was anonymous under him but scored for fun under Dalglish. Why? Because one man set up his team to avoid defeat and the other set up his team to win. The latter allowed Mereiles to go forward more and the result was more goals.

ReplyDeleteYou honestly think a manager like Benitez would want to be a DOF? I am sorry, but DOF is just a fancy name for head scout and it would be offensive to any top manager to be offered that position.

But I agree with you, AVB wouldn't seem like a bad choice, but I would pick Benitez right now, as he is, for now, a better manager.
You might not like him, but at least he got us reasonable results. Someone like Martinez or AVB are still inexperienced (IMO).

ReplyDeleteI was concerned when I read about Kenny flying to the States, but then I read the comments on these pages. You have no problem, FSG, there are at least 100 people on here who know how to manage LFC better than KD. Remarkable when you think that he won everything there is to win in Scotland and England, holds the record for International caps for Scotland, is joint record scorer for his country, played in two World Cups, is the only man to have won the title as a player-manager, won two more titles and came close to winning four doubles with the same club before taking another team from the depths of the old second division to the Premier League title in three years. Yes, he struggled at two other clubs but was given diddley squat time to prove himself- a lot less time than the Knight down the East Lancs. But, say his critics, he has been out of the game too long( apparently he has been on a desert island for 15 years without a TV ) and it has moved on. Moved on? Are we still debating goal line technology? Has video technology finally arrived? Is the ball still round? Is it still 11-a-side? Is Joey Barton still behaving himself?

Its not so much that i just don't like him, its more to do with the fact that i don't want him back because i don't think it would good for the Club.....
ReplyDeleteThats why i wanted him out in the first place.....in fact i was unhappy with benitez from early on in his time as manager with us....i could see certain problems developing and i think he became bigger than the Club...
I recall his comments re the CL win and that it would have better perhaps had he not won it, like too much success too soon or something to that effect BUT had he not won it, then he would not have been gifted so much time.....
6 years is a long time to keep making excuses and blaming everyone else for our failures which is what i think he did....and would do again IF he couldn't cut it the second time around.....
People talk about H & G and how they fcuked him over etc, but at the time i remember being of the same mindset as George Gillett who wasn't all that convinced re Rafa and was looking to replace him....
That was when the real war between rafa and the owners begun....it wasn't so much that rafa was fighting for LFC IMO, he was fighting for himself......
He used the fanbase to fortify his position against the owners, which i didn't like because i was not of the same opinion as other fans who sucked up everything he said like it was the gospel according to rafa....
Im not going to say that H & G were the right owners for us, we've moved on and it seem that FSG are more prepared to commit themselves (even though the ground issue has yet to be resolved..)
I also think we need to move on in terms of management also, and that means not going back in time and replacing rafa who has yet to find work....and proved once again at Milan that he's a difficult charcter to deal with....
Those people wanting him back are very quick to rubbish other candidates which makes it difficult for the Club to move on.....thats why i mentioned AVB because i think that of all the possible candidates he could actually be more of a uniting factor than anyone else...
A very good post, Accept everything except that kenny should get another year, why? because i didnt see a bit of football manager in him, No eye for good players, his best team, Tactics, what to do if something goes wrong...i can only rate him for keeping the players quiet...and thats it, you may give him 3 years, 5 years or even 10 years, fact is he will not get the same 120 m again and will not take us to top 4...he may win Carling cup ( or FA cup for that matter) yet again but how that doesnt matter unless we are in the top 4..financial losses has hit us badly this year, need to get back into top as soon as possible..but with Kenny...honestly not a distant possibility...
