Ajax star Gregory Van Der Wiel recently revealed that a proposed summer move to Valencia had fallen through, and admitted that if no 'big club' comes in for him, he will stay at the Amsterdam Arena. Whatever anyone thinks, Liverpool is still a massive club, and if Van Der Wiel is still available, then the Reds should (IMO) definitely think about making a bid.
Van der Wiel has a contract with the newly-crowned Eredivisie champions until June 2013, but his flirtation with Valencia proves that he's willing to leave before his contract is up, and Ajax will want to sell him before he's eligible to leave on a free transfer.
Yesterday, the Netherlands right back provided an update on his status, and it seems clear that he's still hoping for a move away with this summer. He said:
"I don't know where I will play next season, but no club has shown a concrete interest in signing me so far. I have not said farewell to the club yet. We had agreed not to do so with the players whose future is still undecided".
Liverpool have been linked with €20m-rated Van Der Wiel several times over the last year, and with Glen Johnson proving yet again this season that he is consistently error prone, Liverpool could do with signing a new right back.

NO need to get rid of Johnson..other more pressing positions to worry about
ReplyDeleteThought you may enjoy these... but for goals I'd say these stats are very positive.
ReplyDeleteEvery single prospect mentioned by you never materialized. Give it a rest. looks like a conspiracy against you and your choices. But every player you have identified are due their merit. Nice.
ReplyDeleteNo thanks if we get rid of Johnson we have Martin Kelly the money needs to be spent elsewhere
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of Johnson but rather we improved in other positions first.
ReplyDeletePoor planning by Ajax over him and Vertonghen. Going to lose two good first XI defenders in one go, both have only a year left on their contract and so Ajax won't get much for them. Got a fair bit of work to do to replace them, if they leave.
We already have Kelly and Flanagan so no. Better to invest in other areas such as a creative midfielder and winger.
ReplyDeleteWhat?? Replace Johnson? I gotta laugh out loud. Who else should we replace? Agger? Skrtel? Lucas? Johnno is one of the few quality players that we have.
ReplyDeleteThis blog has become a big (albeit not funny) joke.
No need to sell Johnson, other areas need more attention, like a striker and some good wingers
ReplyDeleteWhat Liverpool need most is an absolutely top class midfielder. Depending on how close Sterling is, they could also use a winger.
ReplyDeleteAny suggestions on players before FSG asking KD to go is a waste of effort and time. I'm just afraid that KD is planning for a 60 mil pounds double swoop for Jermain Defoe and Darren Bent...
ReplyDeleteType your reply...RedChica - I value your contribution to the site, but please drop the sniping comments. If you think the site is a 'joke' then you're welcome to go to some other LFC site.
ReplyDeleteRe replacing Johnson: yes, he needs to go IMO. Johnson is a defensive liability, and he's proved that time and time again this season.
I've never suggested that LFC should get rid of Agger, Skrtel or Lucas, but another central defender is needed for competition.
As for players who need replacing this summer (IMO):
Johnson
Downing
Carroll
Kuyt
Henderson
Carra
Reina
We could use him as a right winger, seems to know how to cross and score as well and is keen to move, a little bit high on the price range though.
ReplyDeleteChange of manager is more important than Glen Johnson
ReplyDeleteI would add Adam to that list....at the top
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind Adam as a squad player, but I wouldn't be too fussed if he was replaced with someone more mobile.
ReplyDeleteabsolutely positive about this one, mate.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you re, Downing,Kuyt, Henderson and Carra, but Johnson Carroll and Reina should stay. Carroll showed us what he can do, when in form, last Saturday
ReplyDeleteAdam is the biggest liability in the squad.
ReplyDeleteget a grip you clown, we will be changing one every season then. We are Liverpool not Newcastle or Chelsea!! Stability is needed not knee jerk reactions
ReplyDeleteHahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahaha
ReplyDeleteLets get Martin Unreal in too!!!
I agree.. He would be one of the first out the door.
ReplyDeleteJamie you've got to give Carroll and Henderson a chance it was their first full season for us and they're young. There must be a reason Henderson was England U21s captain, they've both got bags of potential and need our support to grow into the players that they could and should be. Downing is older so understandably will come under more scrutiny but is he not worth hanging on to for at least another season seeing as he's on a 5 year contract and we'll never recoup anywhere near the fee we paid for him? Carra has done enough for the club to deserve to leave when he wants, he can stay as a squad player and in an ambassadorial role for the young players. And surely you can't want Pepe out after one poor season, we know the quality he has and its not as if he was the only one whose had a poor season, collectively its been atrocious. I personally like Johnson and watch a fair amount of the Eredivisie, Van der Weil is very much in the Johnson mould; he's an attacking wingback but has his defensive shortcomings as well.
ReplyDeleteHopefully he'll not be there to do that
ReplyDeletewe need other areas strengthened as many here have already stated. A winger and a creative mid must be our priorities. Not even sure we really need to get another striker in; personally I'm convinced that carrol and suarez will get the goals next season. Suarez would have scored 20 plus had he not missed 9 games through suspension and had his attention distracted throughout the evra affair. Carroll has shown over the last few games he can score important goals and i think his confidence is back on the rise. A scoring midfielder and a winger with goals would boost that tally.
ReplyDeleteKeinsuke Honda is still looking to move and i believe we could still snatch arda turan if we showed an interest. James McLean should be given a chance; raw talent but think he has a big future. Adam Johnson is also worth a gamble I believe. Think we could also do worse than showing an interest in Victor Moses. Diego should be followed for a bit of creative spark in in the middle. There are also plenty of excellent teams that made it into the europa league this season whose players may be happy to switch to another team in the same competition - shinji kagawa, acrea cossu, douglas costa, mirjalem pranjic. There are plenty of players out there that don't fall into the 10 'star' players that the champions league teams will be fighting over. let
Think it's a real shame that we didn't go after ben arfa but after the problems with aquilani I understand the position they took. I also think aquilani should be brought back and given a run in the team.
With Lucas returning next season I think our midfield will look so much stronger again. And i believe henderson, adam, shelvey and spearing would be a very strong bench to pick from. Promote Suso and sterling to the first team full time next season and we have the makings of a very strong squad. If there is money left over from buying 3 of the above then we can look at bringing in a 4th choice striker behind suarez, carroll and bellamy but otherwise i think they should save the money to replace bellamy next summer.
We got Flanagan - kelly - carrager - robinson - ARE U CRAZY BABY
ReplyDeleteglen johnson??????? I think you will find that there are more pressing issues than this!!! We have to get our wage bill down so that we have some capability in buying new players - aqualani, cole, aurelio, kuyt, maxi, adam should all be sold. Whatever hit we take cos we are wasting money paying their wages (in regards to those on loan). we don't play maxi kuyt or aurelio much. adam is not for lfc. He lacks composure, poor creativity/ vision. poor reactions to changing situations.poor corners free kicks, gives away stupid fouls in dangerous areas all too often.
ReplyDeleteWe also have to work out why we can't score this season. we create plenty of good chances, but we can't score. Is that something to do with the coaching or what?
Downing is so poor this season. 27/28 years old, an abundance of experience in the premier league and he is that poor? should be sold also. prob spending a lot on him too. cut losses and start again.
our defence has been good on the whole, so glen johnson is not an issue. he attacks well, so does enrique. They both need competition for their positions though to keep them on their toes. Kelly should play more. he has been good when he plays. so has flanaghan.
If carroll goes - we need someone who will link up with suarez- assuming he stays also. He needs a player up their with him that is just as skilful and agile like he is, so that they can link up with their tricks and one twos etc. This player needs to also be proficient at finishing chances off. If only we could attract higuain to lfc. he doesn't play too often for real madrid.
Jordi alba left wing or gaston ramirez, who can play as an attacking midfielder also. Suasaeta for right wing. 3 realistic players surely, who are performing well for their clubs. Adam Johnson? wasted on bench at city.
Granero doesn't play too much for real madrid. good player. jovetic at fiorentina. they are 17th or so, could tempt him to prem?
All these players are better than what I've mentioned above.
Will lucas come back strong? hope so cos we have missed him big time. Moussa sissoko, y'ann m'vila and javi martinez are quality in that position.
Soldado, luuk de jong, Falcao all doing well for their clubs up front this season.....
no more opta stats to buy players!!!!!!!! just watch football matches and gauge what a good player is.
ReplyDeletewe need to sign quality a lot of people here are talking as if we have man citys money saying replace up to 10 players the priority is this dalglish, hendersen, adam, kuyt, maxi, spearing, downing, doni out bring in elm 8mil krasic 9 mil vargas 12mil ba 8 mil say around 38 mil thats about all we will be getting to spend if you think the owners will give us another 50 mil plus without champs league you are very stupid sorry about grammar i am in a huge rush if we are very lucky the owners may give us an extra 20 mil which we should use to sign belhanda
ReplyDeletewe could drop vargas for 12 mil sign luuk de jong instead and risk playing sterling still sterling can't do as bad as hendersen downing spearing or adam can he ?
ReplyDeletedisagree with you there on getting rid of carroll and johnson, carroll will be a revelation next year and i'll laugh at most of you because you can eat your words!
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, not changing manager, just so your not like other teams, is not sound logic! Sometimes there's a necessity for change. I feel that if a young talented manager is available we shouldn't hesitate. As this season demonstrated we're going nowhere fast and Dalglish isn't getting any younger..
ReplyDeleteSurely Henderson has more place in the squad than Adam?
ReplyDeleteHenderson has his problems but he is an honest player and his problems are largely ones that players can grow out of (the big one being overawed). He is more versatile than Adam too.
I think that johnson should be kept and transformed into a right winger that would be useful and give us strength and depth and i also think that carrol will come good with confidence been playing much better towards the end of the season hopefully he has a strong start next season
ReplyDeletethose players can manage double figures a season don't u mean danny graham and grant holt for a combined 60 mil
ReplyDeleteexactly if where not chelsea or newcastle hodgson would still be manager
ReplyDeleteHonestly? Reina has one average season, before that he was considered within the top 3 of the premier league and top 6 or 7 of the world. Henderson is a kid and needs a bit more than a season to adjust, look at Lucas. Johnson has been playing very well for us and if he is bombing forward and leaving the defense open, its the CB's job to cover him and the DM's job to cover the CB. Dani Alves is a RB that gets caught out, but that doesnt stop Barcelona from using him. Carroll, lets sell him because he's obviously past his prime and has no good attributes, right? Mate Carroll has looked awesome the past few games and is starting to really gel with Luis. The others I agree should be replaced, except Downing, only because we wont get enough for him, and that felt terrible when we had to sell off Keane for less that what we paid. Jaimie, I respect you for putting up with the constant criticism, but stop being so negative on everyone when they have a bad game or even a bad season.
ReplyDeleteSo every day you trawl through Youtube to find yet another player who has a video about him and throw it out as "the next possible signing" or "Should Liverpool sign this man?" - What a load of crap
ReplyDeleteReina - Are you crazy?! He is one of the best keepers in the world.
ReplyDeleteHe may have made a few mistakes throughout the season but I also remember him making some fantastic saves too which probably saved the team from being even more humiliated this season.
Despite how we all feel Downing (very poor), Carroll and Henderson are unlikely to be sold considering how much the club will lose out on them and a couple of them will be decent back up IF the club was to sign better players.
You haven't got a clue you have obviously never played the game Henderson is young and you can see his football brain is good and like any other young player he is getting better take a look at other so called better clubs than us no 20 yr old is playing week in week out and as last night proved he IS getting better. Carra he will be good as a squad player and as he has proved last couple of games he is better than terry. Johnston well any club that gets rid off first choice international players is finished. Reina OK he has had a few poor games but cummon get rid of him take up cooking Jamie and start a web site for that cos u haven't a clue when it comes to football
ReplyDeleteInstead of talking about what we would like to happen, why not talk about what is more likely to happen... from your list, i highly doubt that Downing, Carrol, Henderson and Reina will be sold. Johnson might get sold to make a buck but only if another quality RB/LB is bought.. Another important factor is that there has to be a replacement for SG and Bellers and Kuyt...
ReplyDeleteReina?? Are you serious? Just because Liverpool had a bad season as a whole I see no justification in getting rid of one of the best keepers in the world. Not to mention most of the goals conceded were mainly from defensive errors or unstoppable shots. You fool!!!
ReplyDeleteLudicrous, Johnson is a great defender, he's not perfect ok, but a great all round defender. Van Der Wiel seems a good player, but Liverpool aren't a wash with money, and already have two good back ups to Johnson. Focus on investing in the right places and not necessarily 15-20 million. Good scouting is what is needed, not necessarily who's the most talked about in continental europe. Its the most popular sport in the world, there's no need to be paying ludicrous sums for a defender. Seb Coates for instance, he hasn't made a huge impact but looks like a great fill in the backline who will be a great player in the future.
ReplyDeleteHi Jaimie, im not too sure replacing one attacking full back with another would solve any defensive problems. Instead we may just get the old cliches of he should play right midfield not right back type comments and then the it worked for bale. I tend to agree with other posters that we have more pressing concerns in other areas. I wouldnt mind the ajax centre half Jan Vertanan (sorry about spelling but cba googling it) carra for me should be a squad player now like Hyypias later years. Where he can come in and do a job because he still has ability but probably not over the course of a season.
ReplyDeleteno to selling johnson that would be poor prioritising , as for selling hendo and carrol you dont buy 21 year olds and then sell them after one season, adam has only played for us for 6 months so again far to early,, we need a midfiels and another striker to replace the out bound kyut, reina poor season but hes been a star for us one season does not make a bad goalie
ReplyDeletelol replace Reina, i dont need to make any snide comments about that suggestion. It speaks for itself.
ReplyDeleteReina should definitely be replaced, his form or lack of this season is inexcusable.
ReplyDeleteThink Johnson is still quality and with our poor attacking we can hardly afford to lose one of our best attacking players, even if he is a defender. Still think he is as good as Skrtel, doesn't get injured as often as Agger and Enrique is pretty accident prone too nowadays. Him and Reina handed Chelsea their first goal on a plate last saturday.
ReplyDeleteWith Blackburn relegated, i reckon that Paul Robinson should be bought, Reina sold. Don't care how good Reina was two years ago, his heart doesn't look in it and his performances have appeared to confirm that. Time to cash in and get someone who is as reliable for half the cost.
