Why is Dalglish pursuing this potential €9m flop...?

Liverpool continue to be linked with a pre-Euro 2012 move for AZ Alkmaar star Rasmus Elm. AZ technical director recently confirmed that other clubs are interested in the midfielder, but insisted that he is determined to keep the Swedish international in Holland. I hope AZ succeed in persuading Elm to stay, as I can't see any evidence to suggest that he will be a success in the Premier League.

In an interview with Voetbal International last week, technical director Earnie Stewart insisted that AZ did not want to lose Elm to Liverpool. he said:

"We cannot afford to lose Rasmus. It goes without saying that we want to keep him happy and to stay here longer. We are talking to each other, but with the birth of his daughter these discussions were postponed. Despite all the interest for Rasmus, I really hope he stays at AZ."

I really hope that this is just a baseless rumour because I can't see Elm being a success at Liverpool. As I always argue, end product is all that matters when it comes to attacking players, and €9m-rated Elm is lacking in the department:

* Thirteen goals and one solitary assist this season.
* Averages 1.5 assists per season (over the last four years)
* Averages 8 goals per season.

Stats: ESPN Soccernet

As we've seen in the past, high-scoring players from the Dutch league have generally failed to replicate their form in the Premier League (Kezman and Kuyt, for example), so if Elm - who is not a prolific goalscorer/creator - can only manage an average of 9.5 goals/assists per season in the comparatively inferior Eredivise, what are the chances that he's going to improve on that in England?

I just can't understand why Kenny Dalglish would be interested Elm. How is 1.5 assists per season close to being good enough for an attacking midfielder? Has Dalglish learned nothing after the transfer debacles over the last 18 months?

If the club is going to upgrade its midfielders then surely there are better options out there?

  3. We have more than enough midfielders, we need two goalscorers, a big buy and a free will do, especially with Maxi going, Stirling must play some part from day one especially in home games. getting men forward is the remedy to Andy Carroll and liverpools future, options at all times.

  4. Depending on the owners and our ambitions for this club, I'm not sure Elm is the sort of quality we should be trying to attract to this club. He's a good player, but he's not great. If we want to improve next season, we can't go in to the summer with our eyes firmly on 'good players'. We need to be signing 'very good' or 'great' players. There's very few players in Holland (not including academies) that would make it at Liverpool, perhaps with the exception of the Erikson's and the Vertonghan's. Remember we will have Lucas back for next season so is holding mid really a priority? I'd pass on a deal for Elm and start trying to attract star quality.

  5. No, he's not. He plays as an attack-minded midfielder for AZ.

  8. Why do you not put yourself forward for a guest spot on LFC TV Jamie. Show your face, share your views face to face. Or meet up with a fan group at the game, they'd love to meet up for a chat about all things Liverpool, maybe the Sandon, invite your mate Tom.

  9. elm has scored 13 goals this season from midfield

    ReplyDelete
  10. Yes, but that's in the Dutch league. With very few exceptions, players from the Eredivise don't tend to score lots of goals in the Premier League, and if Elm can only manage 8 per season (average) in an inferior league, I doubt he'll be able to score/create lots of goals in England.

After the utter failure of LFC's midfielder's to regularly chip in with goals this season, we surely need midfielders with a track record of scoring goals at the highest level?

  11. Doubt we need to know pointless stats before we try to sign him!!! He might actually be a good player, just that stato doesnt fancy him.

I bet Wayne Rooney's stats were awful pre Man Utd and whilst there for 2 seasons, RVP, what were his stats at feyernoord??
frankly I don't care, just look at them now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. to be fair the assists stat isnt necessarily his fault- if the strikers dont bang them in, they aren't counted as assists...

he seems a half decent player. my main concern would be his lack of pace; the guy looks as slow as a tree if you'll pardon the pun.

    ReplyDelete
  13. He has 7 assists under his name this season. And too bad they don't keep score on who gave the assist on the assist. I bet he would have a lot of those under his name too, as almost every attack is architected by him.

    He's a genius.

  14. Elm have 13 goals and 16 assist this season.. What is with this 1.5 assist?? And Kuyt have been no good for Liverpool ?? Kuyt in Feenord played like a striker and in Liverpool he is a winger .. Last year Kuyt was best scorer for LFC.. You need to check you statistics again.

  15. The whole world has gone stats mad! Stats can be used to guide transfer decisions but they cannot be the be all and end all. Otherwise, who needs scouts? Stats don't necessarily tell you much about a player's leadership qualities, ability to take ownership on the field of play, how well a given player will fit into a given system or gel with certain types of players.

Having said this, I'm not sure either if Rasmus Elm is correct for the club. I don't think it's correct to say we have enough midfielders, focus on strengthening other areas first. This area really is the most crucial, yet it is our weakest department. What if Lucas struggles on his return from injury, Charlie Adam's form can improve as much as you like, but he will never reach the standard Liverpool need to dominate other teams on a regular basis - same for Spearing. Henderson hopefully will come good, but it worries me that even for his age. talent, experience and cost (admittedly grossly inflated), he is way behind his international peers in the performance stakes. That leaves us with the ageing, and increasingly less phenomenal Gerrard and the oft impressive, but young JonJo. If we are to compete with the Barcelonas and Real Madrids of this world we need to start now by bringing in quality central midfielders, in particular, and wingers. No doubt we need at least one, but preferably two decent strikers.

Now Jaimie, question, who do you think we should be looking at? Apparently Moussa Sissoko is looking to move on from Toulouse. Described as a box-to-box midfielder who can take up either a defensive  or attacking midfield role, acquiring his services would be like getting 2 midfielders for the price of one. At 6ft 2in, and with his athleticism, he possesses the kind of stature to intimidate in midfield. Haven't seen his stats but I like the look of him. I still think we should have brought Diego to Anfield...

    ReplyDelete
  16. He might turn out to be a bargain and even if he's not a world beater, he'll still probably do more than Adam.

I know the midfield bar Gerrard is crap but does nobody think another striker is more important than a midfielder?

  18. if you're expecting someone to hammer goal after goal gerrard style, then look elsewhere because he's not that type of player to be honest, he seems more like alonso, and god knows he didnt score enough. i kinda see him developing into the makelele role, breaking up play and starting off attacks. his set peices and passing play is second to none- i think the major question marks would be his lack of pace and ability to assume a more defensive role.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Equal importance needs to be attached to both positions. If rumours are to be believed and if LFC are smart, there's no reason why quality signings in both departments can't be acquired.

  22. Yet again, what an incredibly negative article. I'd be surprised if you ever smile if you are in life the way you write on here

If any manager had your attitude they'd never sign anyone or take a chance. Yeah there's probably a fair few more flops than their are successes coming from the dutch league into the prem but there's also a whole load of outstanding players that have succeeded who's stats would more than likely been a lot lower than when they arrived. As for Elm specifically, he's actually more of a deeper lying playmaker closer to alonso's style, meaning that he'll always technically have less assists than other players, but he's the guy who starts the attacking moves. Alonso was the same, he started the moves rather than providing the direct assists. So as someone earlier said on this occasion the stats don't tell the entire story, so not signing him entirely cos his stats are low on assists would be ridiculous. The same with goals. Firstly, 8 goals a season on average is actually a very decent return, even for an out and out attacking midfielder, there won't be many scoring more in the prem this season. And secondly, fact is he's improving his goal return each season which would bode very well for the future anyway. If he carries on improving he could be scoring even more.

  32. If you want to gamble on a manager who has not managed a top side then my man would be Roberto Martinez what he achieved at Swansea from a bankrupt club at the bottom of League Two and then with Wigan has been miracle. How he can get a team like Wigan to play as attractive as he has is fantastic. He is articulate and intelligent and ready to move up a notch or two to a bigger side, maybe not at Liverpool but I wouldnt lose any sleep if he got the job.
As for Elm he came over here a few years ago and chose not to play in the Premier League and signed for AZ Alkmaar, that speaks volumes in itself, I fancy another Swedish flop if he came.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree that we need to strengthen our midfield in the summer, but with rasmus elm I think we're barking up the wrong tree.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Isnt Elm an attacking mid? we really need a more defensive minded player as backup for lucas- moussa sissoko would be perfect but apparently hes rated at a ridiculuos 18m. our problem this season hasnt been creating chances, but rather finishing them off. a goal poacher (like jelavic- shame hes gone to everton) and a quality midfield battler is what we need.

  40. Rasmus elm wud be a revelation at the club with his creative spark, eye for goal and being a dead ball specialist, which we dont have!! for around 9m he is a bargain!! On paper chelsea had a better side than us on tuesday but we demolished them!! this guy on paper doesnt say too much! heck Suarez on paper dont say much but we all know he is a BOSS!! anyway since wen do we have to go out there and get the "BIG NAMES"?? this guy Elm has enuf talent and young enuf to be an anfield legend!! LFC supporters?? den SUPPORT!! i feel for the likes of Henderson, Spearing and Downing they have the weight of the world on their shoulders. You guys and your criticism are hindering LFC and the performances of these young talented players... hope url realise it and wake the F... up! Its supporters like you even the writer of this junk who continually lack respect for LFC as an organization and their decisions... trust them to bring in the right ppl heck with all the 2 cents goin around here u guys shud bring in the talent lol btw that was a joke. Atleast next season the pressure wud be off a lil and watch these young boys come into their own... and if we get Elm u can count on suarez not so much carrol on being amoungst the top goal scorers!! where he shud be if our midfield had quality!

With the only decent goalscorer (Maxi) from midfield leaving, we certainly need to improve in that area

  47. For a 16/17/18 year old at the time, Rooney had a decent record (around 1 in 3 goal ratio, which is not bad considering and his talent was obvious at the time, whereas Elm is not what you call one of the world's best young teen prospects like Rooney was). Certainly not 'awful'. The same goes with RVP, for a young player, he had a decent record and he was playing out wide too at times over there.

Though I do share your implied view that stats aren't the be all and end all.

    ReplyDelete
  48. No thanks. Apart from a game here and there in that position, he can be a liability with his positional indiscipline and impatience. I've never been a big fan of Stevie in any two-man central midfield combination over a long period.

I have a friend in Rotterdam and have asked him about Elm. This is just his opinion, and he's an Ajax fan so fairly unbiased about Elm; his words were: he's quite lightweight and not that good on the ball, he's known more as a dead-ball specialist!

Didn't we already spend (waste) money on a dead-ball specialist in Adam? How has that worked out...?

Haven't seen anything other than YouTube on Elm myself, but I trust the opinion of someone who sees him most weeks.

Doesn't sound like an inspiring purchase to me

    ReplyDelete
  52. Exactly. In Sweden he was a bit more offensive minded, but since he came to Alkmaar he's had a deep role.

    ReplyDelete
  53. The stats are misleading as in his first two seasons he was hampered with injuries and illness.  I believe that he has potential to be good in the EPL and for Liverpool.

In terms of the stats, here is some interesting reading for the 2010/11 EPL season...

    Charile Adam - 12 goals, 9 assists
    Stewart Downing - 7 goals, 9 assists
    Jordan Henderson - 3 goals, 5 assists

What happened to them this season.....considering that they are still playing in the same league?

  58. he is a central midfielder not an attacking midfielder plus just because he doesnt have that many assists doesnt mean he wont be a good signing. Modric rarely gets assists for tottenham and look how crucial he is for the team. Dont let basic stats cloud your judgement mate

    ReplyDelete
  59. According to the British (read London based media) the English premier League is the best & toughest in the world, therefore, bringing any player from abroad would be a gamble as they are all playing in 'inferior' competitions so it would be best to buy players form other premier league teams.

This is the logic from the original post.

Elm is young, the reported £7m is relatively cheap (for an international player with potential), he is a 'dead ball specialist' - something Liverpool have lacked this season, his 13 goals are better than what anyone else at the club has managed this season and he can't be any worse than Charlie Adam.

Of all the players we've been linked to lately, the one I would pull up trees to see happen is Bojan. Sure, he's not had the best of seasons with Roma but this kid is only 21 and he holds all of Barcelona's youth scoring records. He is also the first player to score in a Champions League match who was born in the 90's. He'll get us goals and, at 21 and a product of the Barcelona youth academy, if they want him back ina few years time (a la Fabregas) they can pay us top dollar for him.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I would be concerned as to how much Bojan would cost and his contract situation, as Barcelona have this buy-back clause written into it. But Bojan is the kind of player we do need to be looking at.  He has a bit of everything, he is young and is a goal-scorer plain and simple. The added bonus is that he is different to Suarez and Carroll which would provide added variety to the Liverpool strikeforce.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I haven't seen him in AZ but plenty of times with the Swedish national team. He plays as a holding midfielder there and does it pretty well. And talking about Xabi-crosses - I will never forget his brilliant last gasp cross to Ibrahimovic in that unforgettable game against Hungary in -09. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L28GJxElQu0

    ReplyDelete
  62. The smallest amount I've seen quoted is £20 million. I don't know if that is a standalone amount or if it includes player sales. Nevertheless, it is plenty for a decent midfielder and striker providing LFC are smart - which they weren't last summer.

I'm not sure that a £20 million-rated striker would want to come to a Liverpool team without Champions League football, unless it's, if rumours are to be believed, Darren Bent (Yes people, another overpriced British player).

  65. a) Another negative piece - would love you to look at pro's & con's now and again....just once??? go on, please....

    b) He's more of ball player similar to Alonso/Xavi rather than Stevie/Lamps

    c) He's not the finished article - ie he has "potential" - He's been touted as the best young player Swedenhas produced since Zlatan Ibrahimovic...(if he lives up to hos potential then wow he will be some player)

    d) He's cheap - which pleases me, considering we have just been linked to some serbian kid for £18m...and they want him back on loan next season.

    e) He has to be better than Spearing and Adam.....

    f) At £7m he's not too much of a gamble and could have the opportunity to prove himself in the Europa League at worst...at best he shows his promise, fulfills potential and displaces Spearing/Adam during pre-season.

    ReplyDelete
  66. He has suffered with injury & illness during 09/10 & 10/11 season...nothing too serious just the usual....for a young player beng over-used due to his talent....!!!

    ReplyDelete
  72. also you say he would be a replacement for dirk kuyt, but they play in completly different positions, why do you think he will play on the wing or as a striker as dirk does, i think its obvious that this year we have lost a few exp central midfielders and relied on youth, Elm is 25 old and more exp than shelvy spearing and henderson, this gives shelvy, spearing and henderson more time to learn the game,

gerrard is not getting any younger and in two years shelvy henderson and spearing will still only be 23. so we need someone a little older , in two years elm would be 27.

we are also after a winger and a striker this summer which you know.

    ReplyDelete
  73. oh and how can we use stats to say hes poor and we want better when hendo downing and adam had top stats before joining liverpool, now we say dont buy on stats unless they are poor stats then we say need better stats hmm lets make up our mind shall we

  79. Firstly Jamie, you are not a scout. Assuming your stats are correct, stats only gives you one part of the story. If a players fits into a system with a team, they can sometimes perform well.

Secondly, you seems to be writing off most players. In any case, it is is just a rumour. Ultimately, the manager has to call the shots and be responsible for it.

Look how easy Carroll was knocked off the ball early in the season, maybe it's a "playing with confidence and conviction" thing... I don't know.

If that is the case, and I don't know only thinking, then I'd want him less.

I don't agree with the few exceptions over here, players from the Eredivise does tend to score goals in EPL, players like Robin Van Persie from Feyenoord(don't score awful lots in Eredivise but does the job for Arsenal), Ruud Van Nistelrooy(From PSV,absolute goal machine to say the least!),Marc Overmars(From Ajax, scores and assist!),Rafael Van Der Vaart(was from Eredivise when he started, scores and assist as well!), Klaas Jan Hunterlaar(proved it in across Europe but EPL,I think he will do well in EPL given a chance),Dennis Bergkamp(Legend, need I say more?) and those are a few I mentioned and I don't think people can disagree with me on this?

Of course I'm not trying to prove that there ain't any flops from Eredivise,I do think people stand a chance,Kuyt hasn't do that bad for Liverpool,it's just that he hasn't scored enoug while we all expected him to. I think he's got game intelligence that's why managers still plays him.

  93. Jaimie. I hope you read this. You wrote "how is 1.5 assists per season even good enough for an attacking midfielder", well I agree it's not certainly good. But the fact is that R.Elm plays as not an attacking midfield for AZ!!
In Swedens national team, and before he came to AZ, he played all over the midfield, wing, AM, CM, but in AZ he has settled in as CM/DM.

  94. Actually gerrard has scored the most goals of our midfielders but I know where your coming from as maxi's linkup with suarez is immense also he needed to start more and kuyt has although downing has looked like a better player when playing on the right better than he has on the left mind

  95. Van nistelroy van persie. Not to mention kuyt was our top goalscorer last season plying his trade on the right when his most efective position is a striker what about bergkamp and overmars were they not great players from the eredivisie it also had taken suarez 3 seasons in that league before he then had a terrific season. What was it 49 league goals and 53 in all comps

  96. 1 goal every 3 games is a very good return for a young CM!!

  97. Averages do not tell the true story. Your only as good as your last game or rather in this case season. He had a strong season this year and I think he would be a good edition to the squad for reasonable amount.

  98. spot on...he generally plays behind another attacking midfielder who take turns going forward.  I've seen him play five times this year and hews played in that role everytime...
