Liverpool have signed Crewe Alexandra youngster Dan Smith for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £300,000.
Manchester City were previously reported to be in pole position for the young midfielder's signature, but it appears that Liverpool have beaten them to the punch. A spokesman for the Cheshire club told reporters:
"We are naturally disappointed that Dan has decided to sign for Liverpool.
"The club has received an undisclosed fee and future add-ons but we would have much preferred to have seen him play for our first team.”
Smith revealed details of the the move via Twitter, posting a picture of himself alongside Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish:
Here is a video featuring Smith. Skip to 2:39 for an example of great touch (Smith is number 12), and then to 3:30 to see him scoring a goal.
Smith will now go into Liverpool's Academy, where he can expect to toil for years without every getting a sniff of first team action. He'll then be farmed out on loan to glamorous places like Rochdale and Hull, before inevitably disappearing into obscurity like so many other LFC youngsters down the years.
Obviously, I hope Smith can buck the trend, but that's the reality he's facing.

City Fan?
ReplyDeleteLiverpool are signing lots of young talent, Ibe, Sterling, Pelosi, Nacho, Ngoo, Teixeira, Bijev, Danny Ward, etc etc...................great to see us putting together a fantastic group of youngsters to go alongside the Scousers, like Morgan, Flano, Robinson, Coady etc!!!!
ReplyDeleteCrewe keep on producing decent youngsters. That man Gradi is a legend for them. Haven't seen much of him but their best young player is Powell probably. Only 18 but is a first team regular already.
ReplyDeleteWhy bother being so bloody negative? Seriously do you really think that things are soooo much different at all other premier league clubs? If he's good enough he'll make it simple as. But for now why not just treat this as it is, a potentially great signing of a very talented kid.
ReplyDeletePS. Fair enough to rate a player signing and it's potential to the club that's established and a bit older but don't criticise one and put a downer on it with a kid this age. The lad's probs gonna be ecstatic after signing for a massive club, then what's he gonna think after reading this?
If he reads this and gets offended then he hasn't got the mentality required to be a top class footballer. Jeez, get over it! This is the real world, not some mollycoddling utopia. I am a realist, and people who can't handle realism always call it negativity. I don't just say things for the hell of it; I've showed with evidence many times in the past how young midfielders/attacking players never make it into the first team and stay there.
ReplyDeleteSince the late 1990s, the only midfielders/attackers to come through the youth ranks and become established in the first team are Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard.
That is the reality, and I'm not going to sugarcoat it.
A bit sour that report. The lad's ambitious. The biggest club in England wants him. The Liverpool youth set-up is currently second to none. He must have had to think all of two seconds before saying 'yes please. Good luck lad.
ReplyDeleteWhat is your problem Jaime? You are worthy receiver of the "world's worst Fan" award... Nothing but negativity from you. We sign a young prospect aged 16 and you're moaning about how he is going to be destoyed by the Club. He IS only 16 FFS! Of course it's going to take years before he is ready for first team if he ever will be. Do us all a favour and go support City or Chelski!
ReplyDeletejk you make victor meldrew seem like lenny henry, give it a rest ffs,it seems you want things to go bad to cause debate on your site,no one wants it to be a one eye site with everything pro liverpool but ffs the inpression you put out about the new kid is he will be lucky to make it because of liverpools past, and lets get one thing straight out of all the potential kids we have invested in threw the years , who have we let go and they have gone on to better things?well i cant think of one player, if there good enough they will make it end off,so dont give out the rubbish about never getting a chance,i remember the greatest manager ever sir bob paisley buying a kid called harrinson if my memory serves me right for 400k he was 17 at the time, 400k then is about 4 mill now and the kid never made it,so give these kids and management a chance.
ReplyDeleteYour right Jaimie... but we seem to be buying the best youth internationals out there before the other big clubs therefore the chance of generating one into a world class talent is a lot greater than has ever been before.
ReplyDeleteBut you are correct in that the general probability that he (Dan Smith) will specifically become a talent worthy of a starting berth is minimal.
I kind of agree regarding so called talent wasted in the youth set up and not coming through. But you say they get loaned out and eventually sold. If these youngsters were so good, then once we have sold them surely they would go onto to greater and bigger things. Please provide a list of names of ex Liverpool youth players that the club had, but have sold and have gone on to be successful. I doubt you could name more than a handful.
ReplyDeleteThe point is FSG realizes that our youth set up and structures are strong. IF we can source great talent, coach and mold them, hopefully gems will appear. Some of these will go on and play for Liverpool, most won't. FACT. This is the same for Liverpool and the same for every other youth set up. You are looking for diamonds in the ruff and only a very very small percentage make it too the top.
I think to be fair we have given some of our younger players a crack recently. Pity about Flano's last showing though, prob means he'll go back to the reserves for a spell but he'll be better for the experience and hopefully have another shot later.
ReplyDelete"where he can expect to toil for years without ever getting a sniff of first team football", Kelly, Robinson, Flanno, Shelvey, Stirling, Spearing, Henderson, Coates. How many Premiership teams can you name who have played as many players aged 21 or less this season?
ReplyDeleteJK feeds of your anger and it drives him to write another story which he thinks will generate equal naive anger whilst knowing he is correct in what he says. He will put the odd sorty of praise when recognition is derserved. But he is fundamentally a realist with a mildly bitter resentment of how football has changed ever the past 20 years. Keep feeding him its funny to read! LOL
ReplyDeleteJaimie I'm beginning to very much dislike your negativity, you are in grave danger of embarrassing yourself and losing readers.
ReplyDeleteYour type of support is not wanted at the club, why couldnt you just say welcome and hope he does well?
No because your very bitter about the place you 'apparantly' love and adore. thats not love or adoration in my eyes. you almost told him not to bother coming!!
Or are you a ManU WUM ?? ... I'm starting to think so..
Please name ANY attacking players that have gone on to show they can make it at the top level from our academy. Other than Guthrie to a degree there are few to mention.
ReplyDeleteYou will see a lot of the current set up in a Liverpool shirt in years to come!
Agreed with you jaimie but when you say you're a realist, that's a big LOL,you can't even take some of the comments that didn't go your way,all you did is asking them to buzz off your blog, that is reality and if you can't take it,close this blog, why bother to keep writing and ask for comment?
ReplyDeleteBTW don't bother to answer, figure it out ur'self
ReplyDeleteThere are loads of youth internationals being picked up by other clubs, as well as us, such as Feruz at Chelsea who looks a real talent. We have signed so-called top youngsters before (tallec, nemeth, etc) but I guess we are doing it a more frequent rate these days. But at the end of the day, even though we have bettered our chances with young players, we're no different from the rest of the big clubs.
ReplyDeleteThe kid's 16, how the hell can you judge whether he'll be mentally suitable to make it at that age whether he looks at this and dismisses it or whether he gets down about it?! At the 16 I'd hazard a guess you were nowhere near being the mentally who you are now. It's called development and that's what academy systems are for, to see who develops right and who doesn't. As I said before if he's good enough he'll make it, if not he won't, but at this stage he's a very young kid with a lot of potential and that's all, like so many who've passed through all the premier league academies.
ReplyDeleteIf you can judge people's mentalities at the age of 16 for the rest of their lives Jaimie you should ditch this blogging business and go become a psychologist, as with those skills you'll be world renowned in a matter of years.
Exactly.
ReplyDeletePoint is, that if the kids that've passed through our academies in the last 10 years haven't made it at any other top club either then they haven't been good enough, and that's down to faults in the scouting staff not in the players themselves
Every NEW Signing you are wishing them bad luck, you should be a liverpool fans' ROLE MODEL
ReplyDeleteLiverpool ready to sign Athletic Bilbao top scorer U-16
ReplyDeleteAccording to published press Bilbao this weekend Liverpool want to sign
Mikel Zaton front that is free and is the team's top scorer sub'16
Athletic Bilbao. The player has scored 25 goals in this league

Actually this time I agree with Jamie, and I probably shouldnt say this but I dont care much who we sign if we talking about "starlets", we never see them getting chances anyway, all other clubs play their talents give them chances only us not, just look at sterling it took years to see him playing only 10min. at anfield and we never saw him since then, what about the others? will they get a chance? will this boy now get one? I highly doubt it, and as I know sterling could leave this summer, spurs are leading the chase and hes right to do it, he will lose his talent staying here and playing never for the first team, so we sign this and that thats not important they will never play for the first team except in some pre season games in asia or whatever, thats why I never look forward to these buys and you cant call me negative because facts tell im right.
ReplyDeleteAnother top class report from Special Agent Kanwar of the Trafford Park resistance...
ReplyDeletePerhaps you should stop foaming at the mouth for a second and actually read my article correctly. At no point did I say that Smith is not 'mentally suitable' to make it at LFC. I responded to someone in a comment, stating that if he came to this site, read this article and got offended, he might not be mentally tough enough to make it. If you're going to paraphrase, do so correctly.
ReplyDeleteDear Jamie,
ReplyDeleteI am writing this to you because I have had enough and I am leaving you (and your blog) for good.
I really tried to see past the negative, hostile attitude that you have but once past that I couldn't really find anything of substance left.
You seem to have personal issues with LFC and I would advise that, for your own mental health, you should start supporting another team seeing as LFC is such a disapointment. Maybe the Mancs or Chelsea would appreciate your style of writing.
Perhaps it is not a personal issue but more of a means of generating hits on your site by being controversial and then hoping like hell that someone clicks on one (or more) of the 11 adverts on your site helping you generate revenue.
You claim to be a LFC supporter but you really dont seem to know what YWNWA means. I would recommend you find out what it means, really means and see if you can't apply that attitude to your blog, your life and everything else and then perhaps we will feel better about yourself.
Regards
Me
Shelvey, Henderson and Coates didn't come through the academy; Stirling has played for 10 minutes. My comment is about *attacking* players, and only Gerrard and Owen have made it since 1998.
ReplyDeleteI thought kelly, spearing and flanno were youth or reserve players. i reckon 3 of the young lads in to the first team equation would count for something. honestly, if there isnt space to accomodate maxi or bellers how can you even begin to rationalise accommodating susso, sterling or texeira.
ReplyDeleteas usual negative jamie! haha
ReplyDeleteI didn't claim you said it in the article, you said it in your original response to me.
ReplyDeleteBut nice try having a pop at me anyway.
Maybe because all of our attacking players through the academy have been shit and not good enough!! Neil Mellor etc...... just another excuse to have a pop and it's ridiculous. Maybe Sterling is not ready, he is so lightweight I can see why he might not have been given massive opportunities!!!! Of all the attacking players we have produced, Eccelstons, Amoos who have gone on loan, they are nowhere good enough for the 1st team. Simple as
ReplyDeleteJaimie, Jaimie, Jaimie, please, please, please do not buy a ticket for the top floor of the Liver Building because I fear for your safety. I am used to your criticism of the past and the present( usually constructive ) but now you are getting stuck in to LFC's future by predicting dire consequences for a lad who has not even kicked a ball for the club yet. Please try to be more positive!
ReplyDeleteOn a slightly different tack let's consider the team LFC fielded in the semi.it contained 7 English players, including 3 locals who came through the Academy. There were 2 Academy 'graduates' also on the bench. This compares to Everton's 3 English players and 2 'locals', plus 2 graduates on the bench. After so many years of media criticism of the failure of clubs to field enough English players, thus damaging the prospects of the national side, Liverpool puts out a squad containing 8 English lads and there is not a hint of recognition in the media because, as we now know, nobody gives a stuff about reporting positively about LFC. Not even you, Jaimie.
I missed the discussion about cheating but I would like to refer to an interview given by Darren Fletcher ( bless him ) pre- season. In this he introduced us to the concept of the 'tactical foul'. He admitted, in other words, that it was the 'norm' to deliberately foul an opponent to break up the play. If a move by the opposition was looking threatening then he saw it bas part of his job to commit a foul to stop the move. This enabled his team to 're-group', thus frustrating the other team. Was he just being honest or was he admitting to cheating? Over to you, Jaimie.
Ridiculous statement 'all other clubs play their talents'. Total rubbish
ReplyDeleteCan you point out where in your article you say you're talking about 'attacking players' or are you just moving the goalposts to suit yourself when you're wrong?
ReplyDeleteIf you read the comment to which you replied, it states:
ReplyDelete"My COMMENT is about attacking players, and only gerrard and Owen have made it since 1998"
I didn't it in the article, I said it in a comment. In any event, I've written several articles over the last year about the issue; here is one example:
http://www.liverpool-kop.com/2012/01/lfc-sign-teixeira-whats-point-history.html
Liverpool aren't the biggest club in the country and certainly don't have the best youth set up. Should of stayed at Crewe stupid move by him
ReplyDeleteCracking response Jaimie. Your original article is negative towards academy players getting a chance in the first team. Hughes_nye then makes a comment that actually that's false and young players do get chances in our first team by highlighting the 8 players that have (5 if you don't include the academy graduates), you then out of nowhere respond to that comment by claiming that you were referring to 'attacking' players, hence moving the goalposts to your own benefit when Hughes_nye proved your original article wrong.
ReplyDeleteRegular readers will know that one of my core views is that youth attacking players don't get given a chance in the first team. if you think the article is wrong, good for you, but I don't have time for this pointless pedantry.
ReplyDeleteSterling, Kelly, Flanno, Robbo, Shelvey, Spearing, Eccelston. All have been playing first team football the past year. Be it league, Europa or the league cup.
ReplyDeleteIf you see my response here as pointless pedantry then you obviously just completely fail to see past anything but your own opinion. What I highlighted was an entirely valid flaw in your article and subsequent comment.
ReplyDeleteIf you say that's pointless pedantry then I say your article is pointless negativity
If hes good enough, he will eventually play for the liverpool first team. Im sick of hearing people complain about youngsters not being put in the first team, theres a reason...they havent been good enough. An example, verybody wanted Pacheco in, he got in and did NOTHING.
ReplyDeleteIf so many youngster's fail to make it into the first team over such a long period of time, surely the problem is with the scouting/coaching, not the players?
ReplyDeleteIt works both ways, its no secret that the academy hasn't been up to scratch for a big part of the last 15 years, but the academy was revamped(Largely by Rafa) and we are now beginning to reap the rewards, but people must be patient, for every Michael Owen there's a Lauri Dalla valle.
ReplyDeletei agree our scouting needs to be better at all levels. Never would have believed it, even Kenny bought duds!
ReplyDeleteJaimie is correct,
ReplyDeleteI was quite upbeat until I saw the Picture of Dalglish next to the lad.
I bet Rodolfo Borrell leaves in the summer.
I don't trust Kenny with young players or senior players, he's choosen TERRIBLY with his choices.
Nothing will improve in our premier league fortunes until Dalglish goes it's just a matter of time now.
So you don't trust kenny eh?! A man that has signed many young players in his career from Jamie redknapp to Alan shearer as well as giving others a taste of first team opportunities. He was also involved in our academy before taking the reigns. Let's not mention all that he has won as a manager and the respect throughout the game he has. But 'septimus_severus' doesn't trust him. I'm still chuckling to myself at this, I'd love to hear what kenny would say to you if you said that to his face. Probably just laugh
ReplyDeleteI've given up watching the reserves nowadays as I can no longer bother wasting my time in getting excited over players that are never going to break through anyway.
ReplyDeleteOf all the talented players that we have had in recent years, it's flipping Jay Spearing (who was always decent as a box to box midfielder tbf), Flanagan & Robinson that get picked out. While the talent gets trained out of naturally gifted players as they are taught to become little robots.
Combine that with the focus on 'work rate' and 'jack of all trades, master of none' approach to buying senior players, and it's no surprise that we've become a midtable team...
MN - we are not in the late 80s or early 90s. Would you trust Muhammad Ali in the ring right now? How about John McEnroe at Wimbledon? Many of us trusted Dalglish during his first spell as manager, but you are totally ignoring the reality. TIMES CHANGE. People change. Dalglish has demonstrated *this season* that he is not cut out for modern management. League results prove this; the way he's handled the club's business proves this; his rudeness to the media proves this.
ReplyDeleteWhat evidence is there this season that Dalglish's judgement on players is to be trusted?! None whatsoever. You're living in the past - wake up see the reality as it is today.
I wouldn't trust either Muhammad Ali or john McEnroe if you intended them to fight/play these days. But I would certainly trust there view and understanding of their respective sports, wouldn't you? That's why many old pros go into coaching! Ridiculous comparison. I seem to remember kenny doing pretty well last season, how can he do it then and suddenly is inept? Certainly the players chosen in the summer aren't the best buys but many close to the club understand that comolli had a huge influence over the owners. Certainly kenny gave the go ahead for the players but there is a suggestion that the statistical approach to player recruitment extended to a certain method of playing. Only time will tell if this changes now comolli is gone
ReplyDeletebut something changed in our style of play from last year to this. Last year was far more how we would expect a dalglish team to play based on previous experience.I agree the manner he deals with the press needs to improve but that is something that has changed over the years, I don't think the fundamentals of football have and for te tactical side we have one of the most respected first team coaches in Clarke.i cant see why dalglish suddenly doesnt appreciate what makes a talented player, only adam, carroll and downing are genuine poor signings. All top managers have them and dalglish hasnt been choosing these on his own. Incidentally I actually wanted villas boas to take over as I worried if kenny struggled he'd get this reaction so I'm by no means have 'blind faith' in dalglish
ReplyDeleteDalglish had no pressure last season; there was a massive feelgood factor, and nothing to really play for. Liverpool played well for a while but even so, the warning signs were already there during the second half of last season:
ReplyDelete* Liverpool failed to win 12 of KD's 23 games in the second half of last season. In other words, the club failed to win more than it actually won, which is the same this season.
* Games that should've been won were either lost or drawn, i.e. Blackpool, Everton, Wigan, West Ham, West Brom, Aston Villa etc. Again, it is the same this season.
There were also warning signs in team selection, 'tactics' etc, and they have been replicated this season.
Dalglish is not the answer; he will not take LFC forward in the league. Fair play to you for having faith but I can see the writing on the wall, as can many other fans.
Jamie are u really a liverpool fan all u seem to do is moan about liverpool, daglish and suarez sick of reading your crap. boring the tits off me your full of shit
ReplyDeleteI actually don't have faith, that is the wrong word and I can see it going either way should he stay. I do believe that if, and it's still a big if, he can win the fa cup then he deserves a chance next season. I agree he had no pressure last year and I was worried as to how it might change things this season but to be fair he picked the team up from a bad place so while e may not have a statistically great run, he was competing with the top teams with our form. We nearly pipped spurs don't forget which was unimaginable earlier that season.
ReplyDeleteJK won't discuss the Fletcher comment as he is apparently Ferguson in disguise
ReplyDeleteJust hope this time round they are not adding only quantity but rather quality.I want to believe that with absolute support he will develop as a great player.
ReplyDeleteThe original article is correct. He should have stayed at Crewe. He would have been playing first team football in six months. Now he will disappear and never be seen of again.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, it comes to something when Liverpool can basically bribe a kids family to abandon the club that have made him what he is and take the cash. What else would make them risk chucking his career down the swanny?
It just shows how the new academy system is basically the equivalent of the Tory government, just further enabling the rich to take even more away from the poor.
Jamie is saying when we buy such a player, we should give the lad a chance because of the reason we bought him, we think he is good enough. I agree that sometimes the player has to prove he is good enough and I also agree that the player should be given enough chances to do so. The current management is not giving enough chances to some of our young players, IMO and I agree with Jamie on this aspect. Players like sterling, Morgan, Suso should be given more time on the field especially in the when sterling has show he contributed when he came on. Players like maxi and bellars have made great contributions and should be given more time on as well. There is competition but it seems that for some players the competition is not being given. We can use our players and bed the new ones with the many competitions that we play in.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Jaime would like these kids to get a chance so when they are not an instant success he and his followers will have more to write and whine about?
ReplyDeleteIf everyone had your mentality then we might as well give up on youth. Stupid ending to the piece.
ReplyDeleteSo Spearing is not either established or a midfielder?
ReplyDeletejamie your so negative its unbelievable,i totaly agree with mn on his points . look at the quad he had to work with when he came in , plus it takes time to get a new yes new players to settle in . jamie do you think fergie would of done a better job in the 18months kenny has been there ,i dont think so go and have a look at his record for the 1st seven years.
ReplyDeleteby the way jamie kenny will always give the kids a chance ,so your talking rubbish with what you are saying .spearing, kelly, robinson ,sterling, shelvey, henderson, carrol, etc arnt kids come on jamie take ye blinkers of hey mate
ReplyDeletegano your spot on
ReplyDeletei don't even know what you're trying to say- footballers rarely make it as pros and even more rarely make it as top class footballers and even more rarely make it at liverpool, and therefore the chances of the average youth team player making an impact, as with any other top team are slim? yes your insight is correct yoda. but the "reality" is that he also looks to be very talented and could make it depending on how he develops physically and mentally over the next few years (being not yet the person all round he'll eventually become).
ReplyDeletehowever dan smith looks like he has a chance of making it lets just wait and see. he looked outstanding against a chelsea youth side at the age of 16 and looks like he could be of the same standard as a few of our youth from a year or two ago who are now pushing for the first team squad.
on another note, for most players when they reach 19,20 it's obvious what level they're at- certainly for anyone who's good enough to make it at liverpool by that age they should look a world beater in the reserves (which is league 1/2 standard on average)- watch when shelvey played for the reserves this season, or sterling, and you'll see what a player who is just getting good enough looks like at a lower level. all the players who aren't close to that level do get farmed out to other teams- all that means is that we've been unlucky not to have the opportunity to sign the right players. who knows, perhaps everton snatched all the young talent where beforehand we might have got them.
Maybe you hope for the same, so you can whine about other people? Could go on forever, couldn't it?
ReplyDeleteYes, and Dalglish managed 20 years ago and is now attempting it again. And does not seem to have realised that the game is different now.
ReplyDeleteHe started to struggle when he got money to spend. Comolli or not, Kenny takes responsibility for tactics and selection. Or is that someone else's fault, too?
U got me gabweb. I've not long discovered this forum and I must admit the bickering and moaning can be quite entertaining. Is this how all the other clubs in the UK get behind and support their team?
ReplyDeleteI am Pool fan and agree to an extent that youth set-up has improved but I think Arsenal holds the title as the best youth set-up in the country. I would like to see some of the youngsters get a chance this weekend. Start Sterling on the left and Downing on the right and see what happens
ReplyDeletethe only players to come through since late 90's gerrard and owen? clearly dont know as much as you think you do mate. spearing, kelly, flannagan, robinson do these names ring a bell? they are all youths thats played in the 1st team from the youth system. please dont come back with they are not regular starters or anything they are all young players that have came from the youths to the 1st team they might not make it as regulars but they might as they are proof your point is without proper substance.
ReplyDeleteyou say your a realist does this mean you can see into the future? LFC have made huge changes to the academy the real reason not a lot of youths have not been coming through is because there wasnt enough focus on the academy this isnt the case now. your point of if the young boy read this and was hurt in any way by coments like yours that he hasnt got the mentality to be a top player, wow get a grip do you still react to stuff the same way when you were as young as 16? mental strength comes a lot with growing up i think you forget we are speaking about a young 16 year old boy.
would accept things change in life? if yes then just because you think you have evidence that youngsters never come through into the 1st team at LFC which ive gave you some evidence this isnt the case but does this mean this cant change? especially considering the new fair play rules coming in that means you cant go out and spend more money than your profit on new players. hence why LFC have been busy filling the academy with possible future stars also bringing in rodolf borrell and others to improve the academy.
if you you want to be classed as a realist mate try speaking about reality and not just using the past as a point of refrence to try make a point. im not saying the young guy will make it but im not saying he wont i dont know this and neither do you so yes you are putting a negative slant on things as you cant see into the future so you are just talking crap. evidence haha your so called evidence isnt even correct, i for one wish the youngster all the best and goes on to prove so called realists/negative people like you wrong.
There's something seriously wrong with our coaching system in the EPL when we have so few youngsters coming through. That to me points to failure at grass roots when they cant make the grade to the first team. The leagues tougher than it was back in the days of the owens/ fowlers/ etc. The pressure to perform is higher. But, we are still failing to produce the players that can handle this level of competition.
ReplyDeleteHehe, he can call it "tactical foul" or anything else he wants - the reality is if he lets a threatening play keep developing and leaves his keeper hung out to dry he BETTER have the entire squad, the entire coaching staff AND every paying member in attendance at said stadium reaming him a new one.
ReplyDeleteCan't believe pple still come to this site. It's a rubbish site.
ReplyDelete
