LFC Legend admits: £20m flop's goal failure at Anfield is 'amazing'...

Liverpool face Newcastle United this weekend in another must-win Premier League game, and fans will be hoping that Kenny Dalglish's under-performing signings *finally* start earning their salaries by helping the club get a good result. The Newcastle game will Stewart Downing's 30 league match of the season, and despite having more minutes on the pitch than most other players in the squad, he's still yet to score or create a goal, something Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson finds incredibly hard to believe.

In his weekly column for the BBC, Lawro admitted that Liverpool's league form has been 'extremely poor', and bemoaned the absence of defensive stalwart Daniel Agger, claiming the team had 'missed him' greatly.

At the start of the season, if someone had said 'Downing will go 29 league games without scoring or creating a goal', I'm note sure anyone - myself included - would've believed it; but that's the situation, and Lawro acknowledges that the England international is not the only player at Anfield who needs to buck their ideas up. He observed:

"Downing did well in the Carling Cup final but that was against a Championship team and he is yet to score a Premier League goal for Liverpool, which I find amazing.

"In terms of goals, players like him, Adam [two league goals] and Henderson [one] should be chipping in to compliment Luis Suarez and Craig Bellamy's output and, along with Carroll [three], I think they should have 30 league goals between them by now.

"Those goals would make a massive difference. The total for me from those sort of players in a good team is 30".

30 goals? Liverpool will be lucky if those four players collectively reach double figures by the end of the season. So far, when it comes to the league, Carroll, Henderson, Adam and Downing have cost Liverpool £13.8m per goal (!)

£13.8m?!

It would be great if Carroll got on the scoresheet against his old club this Sunday, but I can't see it happening. In fact, given Dalglish's recent team-sheets, I would be surprised if Carroll even started the game.

I still can't believe that Liverpool are 8 points behind Newcastle, a team that were in the Championship two years ago.

  1. its not the players iys the coaching...good players dont just go bad....but they perform bad if there played in wrong positions and are asked to play a system and way that doesnt suit them ...

  4. I would like to pass on to Lawro that I , for one , said before we bought that along with Adam Downing was neither needed nor talented enough. It is therefore no surprise to me of the quality of his play and the "returns" of his efforts. There were many much more talented on offer and they in the 5-8M bracket. To be sure our opponents today , NUFC , spent wisely and extremely effectively resulting in them doing what we had hoped our staff would have done for us - namely strongly improved the club's level in the League. You don't simply get there by being who you are. You get there by being correct and buying right.

  5. 8points behind a club that two years ago were in championship. We lose 2day and that wil b 11 points behind. That's some progress we made compare to last year. The sad story is that all these players r there to stay cos he won't get rid of them. At least Benitez would get rid of them if it wasn't working(Robie Keane). It's very worrying knowing that all the crap he bought will still b there next season.

  7. Well said Jsconstantine. Patience needed!!! Remember from basement to champions in 14 months...absolutlely pathetic!!! PATIENCE NEEDED!!!!

  8. Who said that the team should be Champions this year??
And if such patience was needed, why get rid of Hodgson so quickly in the first place??

  9. I would like to add being a fan of a big club (Newcastle) that Liverpoo are simply that.  Shit.  Keep on buying our academy crap for 35 Million... we are loving the Liverpool income stream flowing like a river into our bank account.  We buy players like Cabaye, Ba, Cisse, Tiote, Ben Arfa (We also nicked Marveaux for nothing from under your scouse beaks... although not seen him yet due to an injury).  Those 6 players cost Newcastle a Grand total of 25.5 Million if you include Ba's 2 million agent fee.  So cheers guys... 9.5 Million Profit... Six great players... and you bought a piece of shit from Gateshead.  Good work!!!  Next ;)

  10. I was a Downing naysayer before we bought him, especially at the prices quoted, but I never expected him to be this bad. I thought he'd be a good second choice winger, but he has performed way below those standards so far. And he's our first choice winger :-(

Rieira was a lot better than him as far as I'm concerned. Downing has shown no ability to beat a man, create space to whip in quality crosses, or be a goal threat individually. That is not what you should be expecting from a 27 year old £20m winger. He'd better improve A LOT next year!

  11. hopefully there aren't too many biters on this nonsense...

  12. You've got nothing to bite on brother... unless your still living in the 70's (Granted I was pleased with your CL Final Comeback and generally I like Liverpool fans).  However, one day Mr McManaman scored a goal in a 0-4 drubbing at SJP and raced past the Newcastle fans giving it the large.  Since that day... My thoughts changed... never forgot it.

Also as a Newcastle Fan... we are sick of you guys trying to nick our players... at one point you must have been thinking of renaming Liverpool as the Toon.  Also, the money you have spent is ridiculous and pure waste... you have bought overpriced shit.  However, I am no longer concerned about you stealing our players, indeed come and pay over the odds we shall happily sell...  but please don't steal our scouting Network and chief scout Graham Carr... he is worth his weight in gold.  Watch the summer and you will see...

You got Jose... good buy.... but him and Carroll must be looking up the league and thinking... was it really a good move to leave a stadium full of 52,0000 fans to go to a club which can never reach that many... and after today will be 11 points ahead of you.  You dropped to 8th and leapfrogged by your bin scratching brothers Evertoon.  I am going incidentally today... travelled all the way from London to witness Newcastle kick your ass today...I will love every second of the Enrique/Carroll Tears.  I go to all away games but thought I would make the long trip home for this one.

  14. Whilst he had his detractors, I miss Riera. You tubed him the other day, brought back fond memories. That man had talent in abundance. He was the sort of flair player that Liverpool need to unlock stubborn defences.

My major concern come summer is what class of player will we be able to attract. Not just because of lack of Champions' League football but because of our poor showing in the league.

  15. bollox.the players are poor.adam, henderson and downing aren't up to it.that's why we are where we are.

    ReplyDelete
  16.  marveaux is a crock that's why you haven't seen him and why lfc didn't sign him.

    ReplyDelete
  17. as bad as joe cole was last season he had a better impact than downing and henderson.that says alot because most fans saw him as a flop.

    ReplyDelete
  18. i fear we'll be bargain basement hunting the likes of matt jarvis and stephen fletcher.i just can't see fsg sanctioning another massive spend after the failure of last summers signings.

  19. I'm a Newcastle fan and personally have nothing against Liverpool, their players (well 2 perhaps for obvious reasons) or their fans.
But bringing back Dalglish was as big a mistake as when we brought Keegan back as manager for the second time. As great a player as they both were they're out of touch with the modern game and Dalglish is going to ruin his brilliant reputation amongst Liverpool supporters.
He needs to step aside in the summer so you guys can build, I mean face it he's not going to get another 100mil plus to spend so god knows who he'll be scraping the barrell to sign for you.

  20.  Kačaniklić made his debut for Fulham yesterday a LW that was sold as part of the Konchesky deal. Kenny let Ince and Bruna go. Players who never even got a game at Anfield who could have filled the LW position surely one of them would have succeeded and Downing would have not have been needed!

  21. i made the keegan comparison on here before.
all lfc fans want to see kenny succed but there is always the suspicion that the modern game has passed him by.there's no way he'll step aside though,he's too stubborn and loves the club too much to be able to have any impatial look at it.

  22. So your saying that all of these players that were great at their own clubs just happen to be shit for us. don't be stupid dalglish has them playing shit football, just look at carroll last year he was out muscling everyone and banging in the goals, now dalglish wants him to fall over everytime someone touches him

  23. was downing 'great' at villa?
    was henderson 'great' at sunderland?
if you think so,then your measure of a great player is alot different from most fans.

    ReplyDelete
  24. If the system does not suit them then can you explain how we  have done good against top teams this year?

    ReplyDelete
  25. downing plays on the wing, how can that be any different for him than rest of his career? it's not like he's been asked to play centre midfield.henderson is the only one who hasn't had a chance to regularly play in his natural position.
people blaming systems are just desperate and won't admit the players are poor.

  26. thought u cried wen we bought didi. bottom line you still have not won anything and never will.

    ReplyDelete
  27. well we gave you barns, rush, owen pmsl. if i remember they were fantastic for you lol

give me some brotherly love . lol

    said sarcastically.

  28. Is 22 years enough patience for you?

    ReplyDelete
  29. We LFC fans have been very patient... 22 years of patience and counting...

    ReplyDelete
  30. With a little luck, he won't be there next year.

    ReplyDelete
  31. They might,  if Kenny and Comolli are'nt there to spend it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Can't argue mate, just make the most of it while you can, you won't be there next year.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The players did'nt want Hodson, they wanted Kenny. Just be carefull of what you wish for in future.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Guess what? LOST!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well said. Most of those now playing at Newcastle, were linked to us. Never wanted any. Kenny wanted English pity they're crap.

    ReplyDelete
  36. No he's not....he's a FUCKING nugget.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Great at their old clubs? do me a favour.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The new players, Henderson (the worst), Carrol (under performing)Downing ( should stay on the left and has been unlucky) but Kenny bought them and used them in strange ways and keeps insisting to justify his several flops at one go and dropping the the likes of Maxi who everytime comes in, did well. Kenny is not in touch with modern football. Period. He should resign and Henderson 1st to go with him, or loan him if there are any takers at all. We saw 7 mins of Raheem Sterling, and it was enough to conclude Kenny needs to wear glasses.
    KENNY MUST GO !

    ReplyDelete
  39. SPOT ON !!! You are the man who sees the real fact and say it how it is !!! Sad truth. Kenny wiil keep playing them, and try justifying it by playing them at the expense of precious points we kept losing in too many games. He hasn't the b*ls to drop them let alone get rid of them. So we must get rid of him.
Martin O'Neil does good without splashing millions. Imagine what he can do with the squad we have. I'm sure Henderson would warm the bench if he is lucky !!!

  40. I dont understand why kk after finishing off last season on such a high with maxi, aquilani, miereles, suarez, cole, etc. They have been sold off now, and the new players arent meeting expectations. Thats really bad management, why break a team when its doing well....doesnt make sense. They should have just added three players from last season such as silva, tevez. aguero, 3 players I love.

    Suarez, tevez,
    aguero gerrard lucas silva
    enrique agger skrtel johnson

    what a line up,,,

But every one must keep faith KK he will do it give him and his players 1 more year! Players take time to gel......

  41. Chi Bai lu, this is the worst team of Liverpool in 50 years. Give them the puki mak they all need !

  42. Fuwee I'm massive fan of Benitez. We all have different opinions. But I genuinely believe that he overachieved at Lfc. Last season I think he was undermined from people within the club and the hole the crap that was going on with the owners. I would love to c him give it one more go. After all with him we came the closest to win the league for last 20 years and also he made us nUmber one team in Europe.
