TV comedian Alan Davies has launched a stinging attack on Liverpool FC for refusing to play the FA Cup semi-final with Everton on the anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster.
During his regular 'Tuesday Club' podcast for Arsenal fans, the star of TV shows QI and Jonathan Creek criticised the club's decision not to play on the 15th of April. He raged:
"Liverpool FC and the 15th - that gets on my tits that shit. What are you talking about, 'We won't play on the day'. Why can't they? Do they play on the date of the Heysel Stadium disaster?
"How many dates do they not play on? Do Man United play on the date of Munich? Do Rangers play on the date when all their fans died in that disaster whatever year that was - 1971?"
Davies then admitted that he 'hated' Kenny Dalglish, adding:
"Every interview he's given this season he looks like he wants to head-butt the interviewer. This tight-mouthed, furious, frowning, leaning-forward, bitter Glaswegian ranting, 'Liverpool FC do not play on April 15th'."
EDIT: I may be a Liverpool fan but I do not in any way condone the death-threats being hurled at Davies on Twitter. It's pathetic, and just makes the fanbase look bad. Making death threats online is a crime, and if the idiots doing it had half a brain cell they would realise they can be tracked down and charged by the Police.
I've said it before, but I hate Twitter with a vengeance; it's nothing but an online sanctuary for society's racists, bigots and cowards.

He is a spa
ReplyDeleteRather than get Jaimie in a Litigious situation all I can say is that Alan Davies & Paul Merton share one thing in common involving a woman whom Alan was 'liaison' with behind Pauls back ...but of course that would be a subject of litigation should it be published
ReplyDeletealan davies is a strap on and getting brave ! the shithouse must have a book coming out
ReplyDeleteseems abit heartless from him...
ReplyDeleteI agree with Alan here.... you don't see Utd, rangers etc not playing on their tradgies so why LFC? becaue they are deluded. If this was against Utd, Ranagers etc, lfc would be laughing - like what they do on Munich.
ReplyDeleteDisgusting LFC fans more like!
su
ReplyDeleteStupid ignorant jumped up prick .
ReplyDeleteStupid ignorant jumped up prick .
ReplyDeleteAlan Davies is being totally insensitive, its one thing to suggest that we should play on a day marked by a tragedy BUT the nature of this tragedy is what he chooses to ignore...
ReplyDeleteHad this been addressed and proper apologies and responsibilty taken etc by the authorities then im sure it would not be considered such a sensitive issue....
The twat should keep his mouth shut about such matters when he clearly has no interest in the truth....
The bloke is just craving attention. I wouldn't get too worked up about it.
ReplyDeleteIt's difficult to play a match AND be at the memorial service at the same time.
I agree with Alan too. It was an horrific time, but a two minute silence surely would be enough, because its enough for every other disaster. What makes Hillsborough any more upsetting than Munich (a disaster Liverpool fans fail to respect),or the Bradford fire? They were all sorry occasions, but this can not go on for ever.
ReplyDeleteThink this all boils down to Hillbourough still not being resolved after 23 years. If the Police and the Government admit (admitted) to liability the the wound would be closed if not forgotten.
ReplyDeleteThe other Tragic disasters, Munich, Rangers, Bradford etc where accidents with very little blame metered out. Hillsbourough was avoidable and blame was wrongfully aimed at the fans. When this is corrected then prehaps thing will change.
However until then I think nubes like the totally unfunny Alan Davis need to keep their nose out of it.
the thing that disgusts me most is the title,i mean comedian come off it pfffffffffffffff
ReplyDeleteWho is this no-mark?, so funny we never see him on the box!!!!!
ReplyDeleteTosser!!!!
ReplyDeleteYes Davies is out of order but he is a gooner and you expect rival fans to dish out and belittle our great club. What you don't expect is our own fans to be dishing it out and causing unrest for the club, manager and players, something that you seem to do far too often in your articles.
ReplyDeleteEverybody knows that Liverpool always have a memorial service on 15th April as a mark of respect to the 96 and their families. The least Liverpool can do is have the squad present and have done since the very first service. This means that the players have insufficient preparation time as the memorial runs on quite late.
ReplyDeleteIt is therefore not the fact that it's the club saying they won't play, they simply have a responsibility to show their respect which any decent human being would do.
Just because United and Rangers choose to play if they have a fixture that coincides with the date of their own disaster doesn't make them better or worse, they choose to deal with their loss in a different way, and Liverpool choose to act in their own way which shows they can think for themselves. I for one would hate to see us play on the anniversary certainly whilst the families continue to wait for justice.
Good for you Liverpool on making a stand and sticking by it. Shame on you Alan Davies, why don't you engage your brain before opening your gob. No wonder everyone rips the back out of you on QI, you really have proven yourself to be a moron.
fuck off you clown and go and play with your willy
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell is got to to with this frizzzy headed tool ?? Comedian ?? He is as funny as a fire at an orphanage on Christmas Eve
ReplyDeleteHas he not got a point regarding the other teams who play on their anniversarys?
ReplyDeleteErrrrm you thick moron before you launch a attack on Liverpool bout Munich think of the disgusting shithead man u fans that were chanting shit at Sunderland game within a matter of days. Man u are slimy dirty scum of the earth nobs, bit like you really you blithering idiot!
ReplyDeletethe blame was wrongly aimed at the fans by the Sun but the Taylor Report proved them wrong
ReplyDeleteer, comedian? thought it was the frizzy haired 'alan davies' until the word comedian preceded his name! we've been slated by better than that lisping nobhead. bring it on
ReplyDeleteWell it was on an obscure football fan podcast that hardly anybody listens to, it seems a few people are going out of their way to be offended.
ReplyDeletehe is correct
ReplyDeleteStupid , ignorant , jumped up , unfunny , prick , toe rag .
ReplyDeleteWe don't play on the 15th as a mark of respect to 96 fans who never came home from a football match, if we were playing any of the other teams Leo Sayer's lovechild mentioned, on the dates of their clubs respective disasters and they asked us to postpone, we would duly oblige. Alan Davies is a college boy knobhead who has probably never stood on a terrace or even sat in the cheap seats and has now conveniently become a Gooner in an attempt to appeal to the man in the street.
ReplyDeleteThe man needs to keep his mouth shut and not bother coming to Liverpool unless he wants his silly hair set on fire.
fuck off you little cunt before youget shot!
ReplyDeleteHe's right though isn't he? People seem to forget that 14 Liverpool fans were found guilty of killing innocent people at Heysel, with prison sentences totalling 42 years. That day should surely be the one Liverpool refuse to play on if any.
ReplyDeleteThat's their choice and you have no right to criticize others for the handling of a very emotional situation
ReplyDeletehe deserves a good head butt, prize pr#ck typical toff who thinks his sh#t dont stink. im sure he will live to regret his outburst
ReplyDeleteLiverpool make a request to the FA who up to now have always been happy to allow the dates to be changed, if the FA said no there wouldn't be a problem, but as they where culpable in the disaster that is not going to happen. You Sir are a sick barsteward who is too chicken to even post his name.
ReplyDeleteNo he hasn't. Hillsbourough was avoidable and blame was wrongfully aimed at the fans. When this is corrected then perhaps thing will change. Until then unless you have something sensible to say, but out.
ReplyDeleteAnd that was a stitch up, who had the weapons? not the Liverpool fans, that disaster was totally preventable EUAFA knew the stadium was decrepit and the stupid barriers made of chicken wire were useless. need I go on
ReplyDeleteYeah, another stitch up, like Suarez ?? You reds fans need to check out the word GUILTY in the dictionary ! Deluded passers on of blame, poor lickle Liverpool, everyone blames them for everything ! GET A FUCKING GRIP !!!!
ReplyDeleteBehave Bill you idiot, Liverpool fans have a chequered past. I suppose it was a stitch up in Athens when Liverpool fans starting robbing off each other? Do you know how stupid you sound trying to blaim everyone else when Liverpool fans misbehave? The club as a whole are becoming paranoid. What's up with a 2 minute silence like other clubs have? I agree with what Davis said,I just don't think he should of been as flippant with his remarks.
ReplyDeleteHey,every curly haired ugly twat unfunny cunt are welcome to their opinion.
ReplyDeleteoh yes, alan 'i can't take my drink because i get violent and give it the big i am' davies. a talentless prick who hangs off the coat tails of real, funny comedians. just like we react to the 's**', don't give the prick anymore coverage.
ReplyDeletethat is down to them. thakfully we are not 'them'
ReplyDeletethe prick is nothing other than a violent drunk who attacks homeless people. a talentless fat fucker, who hangs off the coat tails of real comedians. i hope he crawls back to the gutter he came from. just another typical middle class twat who likes football because it looks 'cool'. keep your bile in islington you violent thug.
ReplyDeleteyou forgot to add that he is a violent drunk who attacked a homeless man.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you skilfully avoid Heysel. I believe fourteen Liverpool fans were given 3-year sentences for involuntary manslaughter. Half the terms were suspended and it is unclear how many served their sentences.
ReplyDeleteNo real justice was served.
ReplyDeleteAs so do every other fans including Man Utd with one of the 'United' faithful holding a fenerbahce flag at an FA Cup match at Leeds. I'm not a Liverpool fan but what this Davies is saying is fucking stupid. These middle class twatting comedians think they have a right or are clever enough to get themselves involved in incidents that do not concern them, along with snide little jokes about disabled like Frankie Boyle.
ReplyDeleteyou have not lost anyone to a tragedy then. How unsympathetic of you. LFc would NOT be laughing. I know of people who lost their brothers, fathers in that tragedy and I am so proud to live near Liverpool and am proud of LFC - they're like one big family, so supportive of each other. Everton and Liverpool stand side by side, supporting each other when there is a tragedy -
ReplyDeletethats what its all about. Surely you must be able to understand that?
A bit like the mock offence on Evra's behalf, I guess.
ReplyDeleteWhat has Liverpool fans misbehaving got to do with the hillsborough disaster? LFC can't put this to rest until they have redemption. A 2 minute silence isn't any good for those fans who sre attending the memorial service on that day. If you knew people whose family had been killed on that day you'd see it differently I'm sure. How heartless you are Paco.
ReplyDeleteHeysel was on the 29th May. It's not that often that the English season stretches that far, so your point is irrelevant.
ReplyDeleteImportant semi-final against Everton coming up, and suddenly there are plenty of Hillsborough and, more notably Heysel, comments cropping up.
Quelle surprise.
Sorry. I forgot that the Bitters would bring up Athens, too.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Saturday's going to be fun........
Which is worse? An Arsenal fan making some disparaging remarks about Liverpool not playing on April 15th, or Liverpool-Kop website owner Jaimie Kanwar refusing to pay up & donate £500 to a Hillsborough charity after losing a bet last season??
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sam.
ReplyDeleteBill. Don't rise to it.
ReplyDeleteYes, the 'stadium' was crumbling. Yes, UEFA were culpable. Yes, we were able to come and go through a large hole to the left of the turnstile, without showing our tickets. BUT a small minority of Liverpool "fans" behaved like animals that evening, regardless of the provocation.
We've got a semi against Everton, and the Anniversary the following day, so brace yourself for the usual: Wall-pushers, Murderers, Without Killing Anyone, Self-Pity City, It's Never Your Fault, Ken Bigley, Jamie Bulger....... ad nauseam.
We've heard it all before. We'll here it all again.
We just have to be better than that.
And JK, whilst I appreciate your role is to report/comment on all things LFC, you may have just opened a whole can of worms, so prepare yourself for some 'lively debate' from a host of unwelcome 'guests'.
I struggle to think of a single good comedian who isn't occassionaly offensive. I would be very surprised if the vast majority of people complaining haven't found themselves laughing at darker humour before.
ReplyDeleteAnyone seen Bill Hicks, or watched South Park?
Alan Davies is a comedian. Don't take it to heart
Munich is different, though obviously, still a tragedy, because very few, if any, United fans knew the people involved in that tragedy. The Hillsborough tragedy is recent and involved fans and therefore many people lost family members. People can't watch the game (since this was a football disaster, we can assume that many families will have an interest in the game) and go to a memorial service.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Davies is being nasty, as it is being portrayed, but he has failed to understand a pretty simple thing.
Pretty stupid comments by a lazy, terrible comedian but the crap he'll be getting off nutters online will be well worse. I, like Jaimie, hate Twitter but to be honest, it is just symptomatic of the way people act when they feel anonymous, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteAlan Davis Has hated Liverpool/scousers for years and
ReplyDeleteit's not the first time he's come out spouting derogatory shit about Liverpool
in general. I would love to know the
root of his hatred of anything Liverpool. A comedian, now that is a joke!

For what it is worth - I agree with his assertion that LFC should play on the 15th but thought his tone and other comments were shocking
ReplyDeletehttp://stevehynd.com/2012/04/09/alan-davies-i-feel-that-the-liverpool-v-everton-semi-final-could-be-played-on-apr-15th-i-tend-to-agree/
He's right though isn't he
ReplyDeleteAnother woolieback shooting from the hip. Probally the nearest you've been to Liverpool is watching desparate scouses wives.... nobhead!
ReplyDeleteActually I went to watch the game vs Villa this weekend as part of a trip with my relatives. I just happen to agree with him re: Dalglish (as a neutral) and what better way to represent the 96 than beating your city rivals in a Cup Semi-Final?
ReplyDeleteIf LFC want to remember the day then fair enough , fans are free to form their own opinions about the tragedy. But I dont agree with the comment that just because heysel happened on May 29th outside of the season that it shouldnt be remembered in Liverpool with equal significance as Hillsborough. Hillsborough justice hasnt been concluded yet, fair enough, but my concern is that some LFC fans are using Hillsborough as a way of pushing the memory of Heysel into the distance. Those fans who have tweeted death threats should be prosecuted.
ReplyDeleteJim G
BTW-you've attempted to cover all possible permutations but free speech outside Liverpool is alive and kicking. If you want to withdraw back to your default position then we (the reasonable masses) have heard it all before from people like you.
RIP Hillsborough and Heysel victims.
Hysel is May 29th season over. UEFA the authorities and police were also blamed as well as the fans, Belgium was banned from holding major cup finals for 10 years. Segregation in one part of the stadium was a chain and the missiles that were thrown by both sets of fans came from the stadium which was falling down.
ReplyDeleteNo excuses for our fans but at the inquest there were again
questions raised that could have stopped it happening the fact the Hysel stadium was well below standard for a major cup final.
It's just an opinion about one issue. He doesn't hate scousers, I remember him doing a benefit for Liverpool's dockworkers
ReplyDeleteEnglish/England fans and clubs has a whole have a chequered past but lot of fans like yourself seem to forget that.
ReplyDeleteLiverpool and Rangers fans together on Hillsborough and Ibrox.
ReplyDeleteMoney donated by Liverpool and Rangers fans has raised over £4000 for groups close to the clubs' hearts.
A total of £4100 was split between the Hillsborough Family Support Group and the Ibrox Memorial Fund.
I like Alan Davies I think hes very good however after these disgraceful comments I no longer feel that way about him. For many people this is a very emotional subject and rightly so, and he no right to pass comment on it. It doesn't matter what other football clubs do, this is how LFC show there respects for what happened. However despite these comments being heartless and disrespectful he should be sent death threats for them
ReplyDeleteLike you actually care...
ReplyDeleteGot to say he's right
ReplyDeleteLiverpool fans do respect the Munich incident, that's total bull. We respect these things because we have been there ourselves. We would support any other team making these decisions for themselves as well.
ReplyDeleteWe made a decision about a tragedy. Many people lost their lives, how we handle that is our business and no one else's, and you don't have the right to an opinion on this unless you were effected by it yourself.
Aside from anything else, since when does being in the minority suddenly mean you are wrong? So other clubs handle their situations differently, that doesn't make us wrong automatically.
What does Heysel have to do with Hillsborough?
ReplyDeleteI'm appalled that people would try and use any tragedy in which people lost their lives as a way to attack a football club. It's pathetic.
no, he is not.
ReplyDeleteAlso, even if he was that doesn't justify what he said or how he said it.
Not only did he say these things about LFC and kenny he also went on to say that all spurs fans are vermin and are the scum of the earth.....I think this so called comedian is saying far more about himself as a human being than those he points his obnoxious and narrow minded comments at
ReplyDeleteAt the end of the day he is showing himself for what he is he is simply a narrow minded and unpleasant person and he cant be as clever as he seems to think he is as he is inviting trouble for himself.....What an IDIOT
Justice for the 96 YNWA
probably best to read the whole transcript. he also says hillsborough was one of the worst disasters in british peacetime history.
ReplyDeletelets not start another jonathon ross situation here.
I am a Gooner and I don't like Liverpool that much because I think the fans need to get real about there club. Plus they always want to say they are better than arsenal (very petty i know)a bit like spurs, however I am ashamed to support the same club as this stupid posh prick. If Liverpool want to remember this day it is their right to. I find it strange that he would want to disrespect the dead and their relatives. A man in his position should know he can influence a wide amount of people; especially when the people feel the true story has not been told.
ReplyDeleteHe has a history of anti Liverpool sentiment. He was on the BBC program Room 101 many years ago and one of the things he wanted dumping was Liverpool.
ReplyDeleteFact: Only Deluded LFC fans are against him - who other than LFC are against him? there we go!
ReplyDeletenot gona happen
ReplyDeleteWasnt this said on an arsenal podcast? regardless of the fact that you might not like what he said how has this become news? noone other than arsenal fans should've heard what was said. also if you hear/read the whole thing he's very careful to state that he doesn't want to disrespect what happened but hey have your fun and slate this guy for having an opinion which differs from yours. Hypocrites
ReplyDeleteWhile I fully support the marking of the Hillsborough anniversary, I have to say I do agree with Alan. No-one else has to rechedule matches as a result.
ReplyDeleteI'm a Scouser myself but an Everton fan - I was at the other semi that day and had friends and family at Hillsborough. While the scenes on that day were horrific, to blame solely the FA or the Police is ludicrous. There seems to be no blame apportioned to Liverpool fans. Let's get this straight, had however many thousands of fans not continued to pour into the stadium, then there would not have been the scenes that were witnessed. While I fully agree that the powers that be do shoulder a significant amount of responsibility, to absolve the Liverpool fans of any wrong doing is absurd. I suppose we need to absolve them from Heysel too - or maybe the European Cup Final where Michael Shields put a paving slab on someone's head and he died, or maybe when Liverpool fans were mugging their own fans for tickets outside another European Final night.
Personally, this season has shown LFC in their true colours - a bitter and twisted club with no sense of responsibility.
While I feel for the families of those who lost loved ones at the tragedy that was Hillsborough - to not accept ANY liability for their own actions is entirely in keeping with the way that club conduct themselves.
Fact #2: Liverpool fans don't get hyped up as much when its against Munich. They would laugh!
ReplyDeletemaybe Alan Davies thinks that jewish people should get over the Holocaust, too, or does he only try to be funny about easy targets
ReplyDeleteStrange that he should be so controversial when he is about to embark on a tour, no such thing as bad publicity, eh, Alan?
Did you think Bolton should have just got on with it after Muamba nearly died on the pitch a couple of weeks ago?
ReplyDeleteYou are a liar, lad, if you were a scouser you would understand, now get back to revising for your SATs
right-wing
ReplyDeleteI do know someone who was there,he sadly lost his cousin at the game. But even though it's sad time for him,he can't see a reason not to play on that day.
ReplyDeleteFancy comparing Hillsborough to the holocaust? I know Liverpool fans think they're the most important club around, but your a fucking idiot for doing that
ReplyDeleteI didn't say we shouldn't remember Heysel, just that it would be very unusual to be required to play a game on that day.
ReplyDeleteI remember that day, I remember what I saw and how ashamed I was, and still am......
I am an advocate of free speech, I was just trying in my simplistic and uneducated way to say that LFC fans should be used to a lot of the bile, and should try to rise above it, and not react. Because as soon as we do (such as with the twitter stuff) then we have let the loons win.
I know what went on at both grounds, and will take those images (and the noise) to my grave.
As you said (and thanks), RIP to the 96 AND the 39.
And now, if you don't mind, I will withdraw back to my default position, because it's the only way I know how to get through.
What a crass and insensitive git he is for making these comments - very ill timed and totally out of order.
ReplyDeleteBut lets not go over board with the rage and indignation - posting online about what violent act he deserves does LFC and the city of Liverpool absolutely no favours at all .
I think his stupid remarks are a symptom of how far we have fallen and how much we are despised - not just by rival fans but many neutrals hate us now as well .
would he have even made these comments if the club had not saddled itself with such a negative image lately ? perhaps not - but he's got this one drastically wrong , I share an office with a few Utd fans, chelsea and even a Leeds diehard - everyone agreed that he's been incredibly cruel and had no right at all to even speak about Hillsborough.
I just hope he learns to keep his mouth shut after this.
ok fair enough -respect
ReplyDeleteIf he'd kept his comments to what he said about kenny and the press then I would have to admit I tend to agree with him , at least in principle - kennys paranoid ramblings and treating every interviewer with total contempt have done the club no good at all - and too many fans are jumping onto the conspracy theories about Utd and the FA - its ludicrous but many buy into it so they dont have to face the reality of whats happened to the club.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand I am totally disgusted by the cruel stupidity of the man to take cheap shots at what is a very emotional and painfull time for the club and its fans.
FFS roadender, have you actually listened to the podcast? He was not trying to be funny about it or saying 'they should get over it'. He was making a valid point about Liverpools refusal to play on that day - and the knock-on concequences for teams like Chelsea who have to rearrange their fixtures. Please get the facts right before making ridiculous hyperbole comparing this to mocking the holocaust.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the state of Israel do not avoid having to go to work, shut down the infrastructure or goodness whatever on Holocaust Memorial day, as do Jewish diaspora around the globe.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry good sir but if you care to read suared's post, to which I was replying to, he brought up other disasters to the debating table but not Heysel. So in reply to what has Heysel got to do with Hillsborough has as much relevance as the other tragedies brought up by suared.
ReplyDeleteAlan Davies is a coward and a hypocrite, he attacked a homeless man for no reason other than he was drunk and described jews as 'vermin'. I dont agree with death threats but i am glad he is finally be shown as the vile excuse for a human being most of us already knew he is.
ReplyDeleteWell, he is not really a comedian, in my opinion, in any case. But he might be a clown.
ReplyDeleteI suppose the main sufferers from the decision to let us play on that day, rather than the next day, were Chelsea, who will have to go and play Barcelona with a day's less break than they could have had. But the FA could, and should, in my opinion, have tried to find a way around that.
Everything else he said is not even worth commenting on.
And your a scouser...or are you Alan in disguise???
ReplyDeleteRound of applause buddy!
ReplyDeleteAll the negative comments only indicate a facination with our great club. And not rising to' it' is the Liverpool way.
The semi aginst Everton will be a cracker and that is what bugs other clubs fans. Just enjoy the footy!
This remark is out of order!
ReplyDeleteAre you serious?
ReplyDeleteDon't be so ignorant.
Having stood in a Liverpool pub with my man utd shirt hidden under a coat I can assure you they do not respect Munich, unless running around a pub doing'aeroplanes' is respect
ReplyDeleteI'm just still coming to terms that Alan Davies profession is a comedian. About the only thing that's funny about the man
ReplyDeleteIt's the use of the term 'comedian' in association with 'Alan Davies' I find most offensive.
ReplyDeleteFirstly, I'm not a liar, I do understand the pain for those who lost loved ones. But you really mean to tell me you maintain the point of view that no LFC fans were to blame at all for this incident?? C'mon lad, get a grip.
ReplyDeleteRe. The Bolton incident - Bolton did go and play back at WHL around one week after that tragedy - an emotional time for all concerned including the Spurs fans and players btw.
I'm not by any stretch saying LFC should 'just get on with it', I believe (and I know I'm not alone here) that remembrance can take place on or around that date. I don't think they should be able to dictate when they want to play. While I fully appreciate the club wish to honour those that lost their lives, surely after 20yrs+ the time has now come to move forwards - not forget, but to move forwards.
And re. your comment on SAT's - if I was at the other semi that day - I'd have to be at least over 20 (if I attended as a newborn) - slightly too old for SAT's - but then I guess simple mathematics has passed you by - perhaps it is you that needs a refresher in simple addition.
Jim G
ReplyDeletePlease prove that 'bitters' as you call them (I assume you mean Everton fans?) 'brought up Hysel'? It's people like you who will make Saturday 'fun ' with your snide comments. Grow up.
As for Alan Davies - the man is a fool, and worse than that an insensitive fool. I'm pretty sure Everton FC would have stood with Liverpool in refusing to play the semi final on that day. Families in Liverpool are divided Red and Blue. So I am sure some Everton fans lost family in that tragedy as well. It's not just about Liverpool FC (although they were the unwilling vitims of the tragedy) but about the loss to the people of Merseyside (and beyond) and their fight to have the truth told.
I can't prove it , Tigertim, and I apologise if I have offended you with my generalisations.
ReplyDeleteI guess after 23 years of banging my head against a wall, trying to explain to people who only know what they have read in the tabloids, or who only believe what they want to believe due to their prejudices, I tend to get very defensive and bullish. As such my defence mechanism often involves comments that you obviously feel were snidey. I am not particularly proud of that. You must agree that there are plenty of people who never resist the temptation of beating Liverpool (the Club AND the City), with any stick they can get their hands on?The simple scenario would have been for the Liverpool-Everton game to be held at OT on the Saturday lunchtime, and the Spurs-Chelsea game to be at Wembley on the teatime of the same day. But as we know, it's all about money now.Hope the game on Saturday is a fitting tribute to the 96, and the occasion is another one that the whole City can rightfully feel very proud.
I hope you take my apology in the spirit it is meant.
I do agree that plenty are always waiting to stick it to Liverpool the city as well as the clubs and their fans. However eventually we do have to learn to rise above such fools. For tose who think it;s all about aportioning blame - it isn't. It's about getting the truth for the families of the dead.
ReplyDeleteI can't say I'm confident of the fans 'making the city proud' at the weekend, too much seems to have gone on in recent years for that to happen.
I think in one of my earlier posts I did say that we should try and rise above it.
ReplyDeleteAnd then I bit, like I always do!I too feel apprehensive, both with regard to the fans and from a personal point of view, hence my comments about "Saturday should be fun". It wasn't meant as a sleight on Everton, merely an appreciation that some misguided comments by a 'comedian' have stirred up a lot of raw emotions - you only have to look at some of the reaction on Twitter. You and I both know that the atmosphere at the games is a shadow of the 'MerseyPride' Final in '84, and it only needs a few knobheads to stir things up (on either side). I'm also pensive at the reaction of the Spurs or Chelsea fans to a minute's silence the following day, bearing in mind the Chelsea perception that LFC have been in any way intransigent.
Anyway, here's to a good game at least.
Hes a comedian. It's what he is supposed to do. They make fun of things from liverpool fans killing each other to get free seats to the holocaust. Get over it.
ReplyDelete
