Line-Up vs. Aston Villa: Shelvey starts; Bellamy missing again...

With Pepe Reina suspended for the next three games, most fans assume that Brazilian Keeper Doni will come in and take his place. However, could Kenny Dalglish be about to spring a surprise?

About an hour ago, Liverpool's third-choice goalkeeper Brad Jones tweeted the following:

"Great to be back in the mix today. Has been a difficult 18 months. Let's have 3 points to round off a great week!"

As it happens, Doni is actually starting, so Jones must have been happy about being names on the bench.

Here is the full line-up:

Doni, Flanagan, Carragher, Skrtel, Enrique, Shelvey, Henderson, Kuyt, Gerrard, Downing, Suarez

subs: Jones, Bellamy, Carroll, Maxi, Spearing, Agger, Coates.

It's good to see Jonjo Shelvey getting another start, but Henderson and Downing in the starting line-up again? What have they done to deserve that?

It looks like we're going to see Henderson played on the right *again* - why does Dalglish keep doing this?

Also, with Spearing on the bench, who is going to be doing all the donkey work in the middle of the pitch? It looks like it will be either Shelvey or Gerrard, which could nullify the attacking threat of one of those players.

Overall, a good attacking line-up though. Probable formation:

----------------------- Doni

Flanagan --------- Carra -- Skrtel ------- Enrique

Henderson ------ Shelvey -- Gerrard ----- Downing

----------------- Kuyt ------ Suarez

Other possibility: 4231

--------------------- Doni

Flanagan ------ Carra -- Skrtel ------- Enrique

----------- Henderson --- Shelvey

Kuyt ------------- Gerrard ------Downing

------------------ Suarez

  1. What an odd speculation. Brad Jones hasn't been involved with the first team for most of the season so of course he's just happy to be included at all. That's what "back in the mix" means. He'd be training with the squad, preparing for a backup role. Nothing here to suggest he'd actually start, except your inclination to try and stir something up on an otherwise dull Saturday morning.

  3. oh nooo henderson again man I cant stand that boy, even if he scores a hat trick for me hes pure sh.ite, wheres bellamy maxi sterling who can play on wings 100000 times better than hendo, shelvey starts? tbh im not a big fan of  him still think hes too slow and un powerful but why not I mean the season is finished so let the youngsters play, hope sterling is on bench and suso, again fearing for flano he aint good enough.

  4. i have no idea what goes on liverpool behind closed doors. every week a different team, no consistency. sterling should be starting instead of henderson or downing imo

  5. That's a rubbish selection imo. Nothing to be learnt, just another random mishmash of players and hoping for the best. How can reserve players get games in Man U's title challenging teams, but not in our flipping midtable battle?!

Anyways, hopefully it's a 433 or 4231 rather than a 442, with Henderson playing his safe football as the deepest lying central midfielder out of him, Gerrard & Shelvey.

  6. I can't understand why kuyt doesn't always get in first team every match. He is our bread and butter, our backbone in the team. He,ll never stop running and gives 100%, so how can kenny want to sell him??! Doesn't make sense to me. Also can't un and Henderson keep getting picked for first team eitherderstand how downing

  7. Agreed! I don't like Dalglish's selection here again - patricularly having Carragher & Kuyt start, and Coates as the only prospect on the bench - but a 4231 has to be the way forwards.

  8. Kuyt shouldn't get in the team every match because he isn't particularly good. Everybody ignores his negative contributions, while focusing on the likes of Carroll and Henderson, but Kuyt has delivered nothing this season while also featuring heavily in numerous poor team performances

(btw, Kuyt has actually started most of the games in this current terrible run of form)

  9. Agreed again mate - the same players that let the club down every week just get rotated every week in another random formation, with no fresh faces given a look in. There is no logic to the selections either - form and opposition appear to be irrelevant, with Dalglish just randomly throwing names together.

  10. Totally agree with hakeem, why have we not heard why bellamy isn't playing, there,s been no statement, is he injured? Or out of favour? One thing is certain, we need him in first team every. Game.

  11. Is n't that the sort of line up fans have been calling for to be played at home with no defensive midfield player?

  12. 0-0 game written all over it.  Where the hell is sterling again!!! Coates need to come in and nice to see agger on the bench.  Same old s*** as usual!!!

  14. disappointing would of liked to see jones in goal since he has PL experience.Nathan and Raahem should be on bench both played brillant against villa's reserves.hendo instead of maxi.even tho maxi and suarez are very good together.shocking

  15. Downing, henderson & carroll the future of Liverpool....I'm depressed even before the game has began.  Never felt like this before and I've been supporting lfc 27 years

  16. either way kenny likes to test people's patience, let's see how much patience does fsg have

  17. Strange central midfield. Really hope Stevie isn't in a two-man central midfield but me thinks, he will be because of his so-called 'experience'

  18. Agreed, the balance to the team looks wrong. Looking at the bench - Bellamy and Maxi should be starting, instead of Downing and Henderson. That will give us real width. Gerrard and Shelvey - love them both, but both attacking midfielders, and there will be little support from Downing and Henderson. Love Jamie - but Coates should be on IMO.

I may yet eat my words with an Henderson hattrick and some tactical genius from KK.

  19. kenny trying to prove to himself that hederson and downing will come good.

  20. Jones has not had it easy, in relation to personal life in that period.

    ReplyDelete
  21. And Sterling should in the least be on the bench - with another 15 mins appearance late on

    ReplyDelete
  22. And why is Carrager playing instead of Coates. Come onnnnnn liverpoolllllllllll

    ReplyDelete
  23. What's the betting he brings on Carroll and takes off Downing?

Agree with those who say there is nothing to learn from this team and it is the same old rotation of underpeforming players. Once again relying on Gerrard or Suarez to come good. The fact that they haven't done so as much as we hoped is why the team is struggling. No one else is stepping up.

  24. sigh please i can't take another loss

    ReplyDelete
  25. If Carroll hadn't have thrown his strop he would most probably had started.

    ReplyDelete
  26. In the end, they will be his downfall im afraid to say!!

  27. Big AC is punished for last weeks indiscretion and of course KD's favorite signing Henderson is starting again pun intended so i'm going to give this game a miss another stalemate again poof

Its a good thing were full of goals at the moment.  Well done Kenny for picking Jamie Carragher.  If he gets sacked he brings it on himself.

stewart Downing is so poor.  He just waits for an overlapping run time and time again.  TAKE HIM ON!!!! ..forget it... TAKE HIM OFF!!

  33. I actually said last year when we signed him he's going to be a BIG PUSSY!!  Some desperate fans still bang on about his assists...says it all!!

Ro, I truely believe If Kenny is looking for a Sterile left midfielder he has found his man in Downing.

I would be tempted to swap Enrique and Downing.  Downing  would be more effective at left back, it would suit his defensive, no frills, never take you on style down to the ground.  Enrique would cause so much more problems in an advanced position.

  35. It doesn't matter either way cos they both cant hit a decent cross to save em' selves!!!

Suarez has once again shown glimpses of where his best position lies....wide left or right.  He's a wizard on the flank.  Did more in 30 seconds on that left side than Downing and Henderson have dreamt about in their entire careers.

Win lose or draw kenny has to go.

    ReplyDelete
  37. so upset arghhhhh!!!! downing doesn even take on his man after losing the ball hendo kills the entire fing play by skying the ball into the crowdsuarez stop diving please argh carragher stop berating on the keeper and do your own job first if aston villa win they deserved it cause we are not playing like a team at the moment... plain simple... JUST AWFUL... KENNY IT WAS NICE KNOWING U BUT U MADE, POURED, AND DRANK YOUR OWN POISON.

This poison was a tincture with its main ingredients being the long and slow marination of Henderson, Downing and Carrols talent.

    A lethal concoction, I'm sure you'll agree.......

Gerrard pops up in his best position of right mid and look what happens.  He crosses like Beckham and makes runs off the ball.  The problem is he is rarely ever 'managed' and so plays in central midfield.  Start him right mid with Suarez on the Left and Even Andy Carroll will score goals.

  49. against a depleted Villa team!!! yeah!!! let's go out and celebrate!!! who's with me??!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. The situation is so bad that a draw against a team in 15th position feels like a win.  Agger makes instance impact and lucky not to score.  Another game (32 games in the league) where the likes of downing, henderson or carroll could not score!!

  51. Theycallmemrburt5:21 pm, April 07, 2012

unfortunately our defensive midfielders play left and right midfield.

  54. The only defense I can mount for KK is that the League fight is over and everything has to go into winning the FA CUP. But having typed that, I can't see any real evidence to support it. This season has been bewildering to say the least.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I suggested that back in october i think...great minds think alike hey!! Pity kenny cannot see it. I have always said enrique is much better going forward...

    ReplyDelete
  56. My patience has worn thin - Dalglish clearly has no commitment to developing the youth, and so if a manager has to buy our way out of this predicament, I'd rather it be a fresh manager that hasn't already displayed such irresponsible errors in the transfer market

    ReplyDelete
  57. Just hope Kuyt is not doing the shooting for you!
