Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy has (so far) been a massive success during his second spell at Anfield, and after playing alongside his new team-mates for a while, who would Bellers choose for his Liverpool 5-a-side team? One thing's for sure, there's one player who definitely would not make it.
In a recent interview with LFC TV, Bellamy, who will hopefully be fit enough to play against Newcastle this Sunday, chose a very strong team:
"It's hard because there's a lot of good players.
"I'm going to be falling out with everybody over this, but obviously, Pepe would have to go in goal.
"Then I'd have to have a back two of Daniel Agger, and Jamie Carragher, just for his intimdation of the referee!
"I couldn't pick myself as I'm not good enough to be in there, so I'd have Stevie and Suarez".
Two central defenders? I think Bellamy's team is a tad too defensive for a 5-a-side; plus, Carra is not renowned for quick, zippy short-passing, so I'd replace him with someone else.
As for Bellamy not being good enough - perhaps he's just being modest, but with his speed, technique and low centre of gravity, 5-a-side football would be ideal for him.
My team (From LFC's current players)
------------------ Reina
----------------- Agger
------ Bellamy ------------ Gerrard
----------------- Suarez
Who needs defenders?!
Jaimie Kanwar

I actually agree with Bellamy on this one, I play 5 a side regularly and 2 defenders are important because 1 could easily be cut out by A 1 2 pass. Agger could easily convert into an attacker and Jamie could cover well Without wanting to get forward. I would actually play Suarez centrally and Stevie forward.....Looks like a good team to me!
ReplyDeleteReina
ReplyDeleteAurelio (if fit)
Lucas (or Henderson)
Gerrard
Suarez
Maxi to just miss out
who cares about your opinion jamie
ReplyDeletestop these stupid posts please
I used to play a lot of 5 a side, we used to play a diamond with one defender who could pass a ball, two players in the middle and one up top.
ReplyDeleteA good defensive midfielder could do the job as the defender if you are playing with a 'below head height' rule.
So my team would be Reina, or Doni, Lucas, when fit, Gerrard, Shelvey, for his energy, Suarez up front. Maybe Bellamy in for Shelvey. Carragher wouldn't get anywhere near the team!
I play quite abit of 5-a-side. Pass and move is the emphasis so I might have to get Maxi Rodriguez in that 5 a side team. I'd go with;
ReplyDeleteReina
Adam or Agger
Gerrard
Maxi
Suarez
Bellamy as a sub. So many contenders for a Liverpool 5-a-side team though!
you say pass and move and then put adam in the team!
ReplyDeleteAssuming a fully fit squad.
ReplyDeleteReina
Agger
Lucas Gerrard
Suarez
old news! posted this when he actually said it, 6 months ago!
ReplyDeleteJamie K aint gotta clue
lol... burn... :)

Garrard can defend and the other 3 outfield players are short with a lot of acceleration and a low centre of gravity.
Agree with you that a 5-a-side team usually works around a GK-1-2-1 structure, with of course, various other options as possibility. The strucutre shall also be fluid as it more of all attack/all defend total football.
ReplyDeletePractically, it means in addition to the GK, you usually have: one (central) defender, one forward, and two offensive full-backs /or defensive wings/.
Based on my experience, I think requirements for 5-a-side a slightly different that those for 11-a-side. In addition to ball technique, you need a somewhat different footballing brain. Players need the eye and the discipline for quick, short passing and quick decision making, as well the ability to pass/beat opponents in small, congested areas without much space to run into. Speed of decision making and short passing is key, not linear speed.
On this basis, Agger seems to be the most suited for the defender role. For the the back/midfielders, I would consider Maxi/Bellamy/Enrique on the left and Lucas/Johnson/Gerrard on the right. Suarez could work as the lonely forward or as a back/wing on any of the flanks.
In addition to Reina, Agger, Suarez, it is so tough to select the other two /Gerrard, though truly great on the large field, may not work as well on the smaller one/. Given that the 5-a-side football requirements for constant changes to keep the tempo, I would stick with the larger selection.
This team is so good, dont even need a keeper! lol

Adam
Downing Carroll
