A few days ago, Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson suggested that Liverpool should try and sign Man United striker Dimitar Berbatov to partner Luis Suarez upfront. Lawro described the Bulgarian as the 'perfect foil' or Suarez, and now it appears that he may actually be available at the end of the season.
Earlier this week, Lawro told the Liverpool Daily Post:
"[Liverpool need] someone else to be sniffing around alongside Suarez in the box. Even someone like Dimitar Berbatov would be the perfect foil for the Uruguayan".
Last season, Berbatov was the Premier League's top goalscorer but that seemingly cuts no ice with Man United manager Alex Ferguson, who's rewarded the striker with extended bench duty.
Ferguson, however, admits that he may have to let Berbatov leave at the end of the season, and if he's available, Liverpool could be in with a chance of signing him. Ferguson told The Daily Express:
"His [Berbatov's] concern is not getting first-team football. It is difficult for me to guarantee that, so it could lead to him looking elsewhere, and having had chats with him, I understand he wants to get first-team football"
It seems likely that Berbatov will leave at the end of the season to pursue first-team football, and once he's a free agent, he can join whomever he wants. Coming to Liverpool would make sense for the Bulgarian, mainly because he wouldn't need to uproot and disrupt his life.
I would love to see Berbatov signed on a free at the end of the season, or even for a small fee. He may be 31 years old, but age hasn't stopped the likes of Craig Bellamy, Paul Scholes, Robbie Keane and Thierry Henry having a major impact for their respective clubs.
Despite only making 14 starts this season, Berbatov has still scored more goals (10) than £75m trio Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing combined.

Won't happen sadly, the mancs have a clause in his contract to get an extra year out of him which they are going to exercise to ensure they get a fee for him and sadly they won't sell him to us. Agree he would have been a good signing though if it were possible.
ReplyDeleteToo expensive and why would he go LFC in the first place?
ReplyDeleteAnd why the hell would we even want him?? He's a less talented version of Carroll who's on the downside of his career. No thanks
ReplyDeleteProblem is though he has a clause meaning utd can extend his contract by a year, meaning he won't be free. He'll probably end up at Bayern Munich
ReplyDeleteI wondered about the sense of that clause and I think Ferguson is taking the option to ensure that he does not end up at another premiership club, particularly us. The last thing he would want is for the last piece in our attacking jigsaw to be provided by him for free!
ReplyDeleteHe's very unlikely to end up at an English club. The figures do not add up. A 31 year old striker, probably on 100k per week, for Man Utd to make money on selling him they would have to sell him for 2 or 3 million probably. If Berbatov decided to just sit on the bench and take his pay, that would cost his club 5 million. So, Ferguson is not taking up the option for the selling price but just to have control over where the player can go next. But, like Chris says, I'm sure if Munich offer a nominal fee, Ferguson will sell.
How about Drogba on a free? I doubt he would play for another English club but after taking 50 million off Chelsea for Torres, getting Drogba for nothing would be quite appealing, i think.
Berbatov to Bayern. Gomez and Van Huntelaar to Anfield.
ReplyDeleteYou're being ironic, right?
ReplyDeletePointless article waste of freaking time...I like how you keep the headlines vague on this site though gets people to click on from aggregators like newsnow
ReplyDeleteBerbatov would be a great addition to Liverpool, he is one of the most creative (actually probably the most creative) forward in the PL. Won the Golden Boot last year playing only 2/3 of the season, this year has about 3 starts and 7 goals, and has been very rarely injured during his career. He is currently a bargain by any definition. He is leaving United, and was permanently benched in the middle of last season, because of personal falling off with Ferguson. Whoever thinks that Welbeck or Chicharito do a better job for United, has not been watching United before and after Berbatov was benched.
ReplyDeleteNo, Jamie, he's being facetious! What's ironic is your use of the word 'ironic', when he's not being ironic at all!
ReplyDeleteWhat are the chances LFC buys any ManU player directly from them ? He can be good addition but I don't see it happening.
ReplyDeleteMoreover you can't assemble a team for future with all short time solutions. We already have Bellamy who can be used for limited matches. Don't want more old horses.
He is less talented than Carroll are you mad what talent does Carroll have?
ReplyDeleteChi Bai lu, my Chi Bai says dont buy from scums. When arrive at Anfield they become rotten!
ReplyDeleteashfah hussain or ashfah ngoh. no dirty words please
ReplyDeleteWhilst the phrase "less talented version of Carroll" is hilarious sentimental bias, I did actually thought of Carroll when I read this story. I know this'll be good for laughs, but I honestly think that Carroll will one day come good. Whether it be at Liverpool or somewhere else further down the line, he just needs some adjustments to his attitude and he'll look like the player we were supposed to buy.
ReplyDeleteWe could put Andy on one post, Berba on the other, and have Suarez running down the middle. We still wouldn't score, but...
Seeing that Fergie wouldn't let Gabriel Heniz join us what are the chances of him letting Berbatov join?
ReplyDeleteGet your point bout Berbatov but still no need to use his goals this season and use the facts against your favourite 4 LFC players records. Berbatov's goals actually won Man Utd any points this season??? NO, 2 against Blackburn and lost and remember him scoring 4 in a game with the points already in the bag.
ReplyDeleteStats don't lie..........Bullshit and pointless!!!!!!!!!!!
he's a free agent how is that too expensive, durrrr :/
ReplyDeleteVan Huntelaar?
ReplyDeleteNo, Jamie, he's being facetious, what's ironic is you thinking that's an example of irony!
ReplyDeleteThe kind of talent that scored 2 goals againat Man City last season!
ReplyDelete8 out of 10 people think that statistics are a load of rubbish!
ReplyDeleteNo, what's ironic is that you clearly have no understanding of the meaning of the word 'ironic'.
ReplyDeleteOh my god, well i hope you feel satisfied Damo whats that about 7mill a goal, don't kid yourself mate, if you think thats talent then you know shit about football, your a clown.
ReplyDeleteone of his shoulder and a glaring howler from Harte? Top draw
ReplyDelete'because of falling off with Ferguson'
ReplyDeleteYou mean falling out? If so, what happened? Any source? Would be interesting read
Great comeback, you've basically come back to me with what I've already said. If there were two of you you could be classed as a wit. Berbatov IS on the downside of his career, doesn't start games, year younger than Michel Owen
ReplyDeleteI think you'll find the phrase is 'top drawer', do they let you out often?
ReplyDeleteYou're a clown! Mind the apostrophe. Same type of idiot that gave Lucas a hard time!
ReplyDeleteSo he hasn't scored any since then, you're saying?
ReplyDeletei would think before you speak coz you might sound stupid....utd have an option to extend hs contract for a further year, something fergie has stated utd will exercise and thus wll be able to command a fee for him although it will be no where near the 30 mil that they pad for him, so whos the durrrrr now eh?
ReplyDeleteexpect him to go back to germany for a fee around 5-10 million.
i certainly wouldnt want him at liverpool...far to lazy and well past his best
No idiot what im saying is that he is about as talented as Zenden, by the way i have read a couple of your post and you might have a clue on punctuation but you really don't know shit about football if you think that Carroll has any other talents other than his head.
ReplyDeleteget your details right jk. he is not going to be a free agent. utd have an option to extend his contract for a further year and ferguson has said that they are going to take up this option so as to command a fee for him.
ReplyDeletec'mon jaimie at least get the basics right!
Really? So I don't agree with you or Jaimie and that makes me an idiot? Carroll was doing quite well at Newcastle before we bought him thanks very much, scored against us and others, didn't orchestrate his move here, was injured initially, didn't get a run in the team, has showed signs recently of getting back to his best. But you've already made up what passes for your mind. Support your team! Really well spotted on the punctuation by the way, if only you could spot developing talent!
ReplyDeleteDamn, forgot to mention, he has a very sweet left foot. That's a talent other than his head surely?
ReplyDeleteDamo you are obviously related to Carroll what a joke, and you talk about spotting talent, which other team of LFC stature would he just walk into, not to mention have some overrated manager pay 35mill for or i suppose you think his fee was just.
ReplyDeleteYeah if he new how to swing it
ReplyDeleteStature, well, Newcastle would be happy to have him back, and they're ahead of us in the table, but of LFC stature? I'd say on his form the season before he joined us, a lot of teams would have taken him
