Liverpool beat Cardiff on penalties in the Carling Cup Final last Sunday, but striker Luis Suarez was not amongst the penalty-takers. Should he have volunteered and taken responsibility? Former Leicester and Blackburn midfielder Robbie Savage believes that the Uruguayan should have stepped-up for Liverpool.
Suarez has not had the best of luck when it comes to penalties; he's missed two so far this season, against Brighton and Sunderland, and it's easy to understand his reluctance to take another one, especially with so much on the line in a Cup final.
Savage insists that Suarez should've put his penalty woes behind him and taken responsibility for the team. he told The Mirror:
"[I was] astonished that Luis Suarez did not step up to take a penalty in the Wembley shootout. Yes, he'd missed that spot kick against Brighton. Yes, Kenny Dalglish probably wanted to protect him from the possibility of being the story if he missed again, but a player earning the wages Suarez does should have stepped up, grabbed the ball and said, 'that's mine'".
I don't see how wages has anything to do with taking a penalty; the fact is, Suarez is not that great when it comes to spot-kicks, so removing him from the penalty line-up was clearly a good thing.
Savage seems to be implying that Suarez somehow shirked his responsibility during the shootout; I disagree with that, and I doubt that's what happened in practice. Suarez probably wanted to take a penalty but he was probably overruled by Dalglish, or other players.
it surely always makes sense to let successful penalty-takers take the responsibility. Having said that, both Steven Gerrard and Charlie Adam missed penalties so you never can tell.

what do Robbie Savage know never done or won any thing when playing football so just another as been shouting is mouth off on telly
ReplyDeleteI think he needs to step up in every game. He is really not setting the world alight.
ReplyDeleteOh come on its not their choice the penalty takers are decided by the manager.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing Suarez can do to please the former slave traders and invaders of many countries. He must leave, he must go to Italy or Spain where he would be welcomed. The more I read, the less I like the arrogant, ignorant English people. Not to mention their really ugly women.
ReplyDeleteSuarez was probably in so much pain from the 'foul'(!)
ReplyDeleteHim and his theatrics......urgh
your a dickhead!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSuarez cannot score simple goals. We've seen enough proof of that this season. He is too clever a player to be taking important penalties and his desire to win is too big. I thought Downing and Johnson were brilliant choices as they wouldn't think too much. Those 2 may not be fantastic when the chips are down, but they handle the easy stuff with aplomb!
ReplyDeleteIf a player is not confident of taking a penalty, how does the team benefit from having him take it over somebody that is confident?? Savage's logic is missing here...
ReplyDeleteI think Savage needs a new hobby, his pointless rants about LFC are becoming tiresome. Get a life Robbie, if you are so knowledgeable about the game then get your coaching badges and get into management - or shut up!
ReplyDeleteCant believe the front savage has He's critisized Dalglish and Suarez lately. He's not good enough to lace their boots. The only reason he gets on telly now is due to his haircut and makeup.
ReplyDeleteThe long haired Savage should stick to dancing as he thinks he knows a lot. Who made the big mistake of letting him talk rubbish on TV. Robbie who do you think you are?? An average footballer with average opinions.
ReplyDeleteHaving fun yet?
ReplyDeleteMaybe if you weren't such a LIAR, people wouldn't HATE you so much and laugh at your pi55-poor attempts to stop us all making your life a misery!
ReplyDeleteSee you in the Bear and Swan sometime
ReplyDeletewow really, Italy or Spain never invaded another country and took slaves? Surely their past empires were just gifted to them because everybody wanted to be a part of that, even if it meant self-imposed servitude right! Also every country has really ugly women and idiots like you.
