In a Press Conference prior to Chelsea's defeat at Napoli, beleaguered Blues boss Andre Villas Boas suggested that several managers - including Liverpool's Kenny Dalglish - should feel under pressure at the prospect of Jose Mourinho returning to the Premier League. With Rafa Benitez seemingly being lined-up to take over at Chelsea, we could see an ironic role-reversal if Mourinho ever ends up at Liverpool. Would Reds fans accept the Portuguese manager at Anfield?

Over 2000 fans voted, and despite the vitriol toward the Portuguese, and the constant accusations of boring football; short-termism, and huge financial outlay, the result of the Poll was a little surprising:
* Yes: 53%
* No: 47%
It seems that the majority of voting fans are willing to overlook the negative aspects of Mourinho if it means bringing league success to Liverpool.
For me, the result is not surprising at all; it encapsulates the defining feature of modern fandom: success at any cost; condone all negatives as long there's a benefit, and sell your soul for silverware.
Liverpool FC were guilty of this approach themselves with the purchase of Luis Suarez. Clearly, the club ignored his disciplinary issues and cared more about goals than the potential for future damage to the club's reputation...and look what happened (!)
A lot of fans moan about Mourinho but if he came to Liverpool and won the league, that moaning would stop pretty quickly, I'm sure. Not that I'm personally advocating that change; as someone who grew up watching Dalglish play, and then manage Liverpool in the 80s, I'm perfectly happy to have him in charge.
When all is said and done though, I sincerely doubt Mourinho would've handled the Suarez situation in the same ill-advised way as Kenny Dalglish and LFC. The so-called 'Special one' may have a prickly personality, but has he ever handled any football situation as badly as Liverpool handled Suarez-Evra?

ReplyDeleteHe'd be brilliant at LFC. It won't happen in the near future though. Can't see him walking away from Spanish league leaders to 7th place English Prem team. He will probably end up back at Chelsea or Tottenham if Redknapp walks for the England job. Dalglish isn't doing badly, hard to defend the money he has spent on certain players, but i reckon all those years out the game made him a bit trigger happy to begin with.

There were a few who said something like "I've been a ticket holder for over 40 years, but this was the last day I supported LFC" - well... good riddance to them.

Mourinho is crap. Real do play well against weak teams, and they do have good players but Mourinho has not got it to beat the best. Look, the guy has never played. ReplyDeleteAnd, while we are at it, the only mistake Liverpool made in the handling of the Evra- FA affair, was to get Suarez and Kenny to apologise for the lack of the handshake. That is down to sponsors. Money once again wins out over morality.
It's only your opinion that things were handled badly...... it is the FA who have handled the situation badly, with their siding with Evra and coaching him through his 'evidence.' If it was a court of law, it would have been laughed out.

The 2000 that took part may have took part more than once, they may not be LFC fans and may be relatively unsure of the traits Mourinho would bring to the club. He was often a disgrace at Chelsea, as he has been at Madrid.

Lots of managers purchase/stick with flair players with issues (Cantona, Ginola, Best, Maradona, Rooney, Barton - to a degree) in the hope of getting the best out of them and reducing the worst to a manageable degree. It's actually one of the principle tenets of moneyball. But you don't care as you're blinded by you own obstinacy and refuse to see anything other than blask and white. I understand totally that a balanced approach on the Suarez/Evra affair seemed to be beyond everyone who commented on it but I personally felt that a degree of objectivity on your own part would have given you far more credibility among the people to whom your site was aimed - and not just a way of poking a stick at the caged angry dog who myopically felt that 'Suarez is INNOCENT at all costs!'
I'm not saying that I felt Suarez was guilty or innocent in this situation but I felt that you had a platform to objectively explore both sides of the issue, whilst pointing out the classless and vile reactions of every party involved.
But by dismissing one side of the argument totally, you essentially showed your hand too early. It was a similar stance to Roy Hodgson when he appeared to attempt to 'make friends' with United by fawning to Ferguson.
You knew that the Liverpool supporters would respond with vitriol and that you'd get hits on the site. Isn't that basically why you're still tenuously snipping comments on Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra into articles as far reaching as Jose Mourinho managerial links?

No thanks, I respect what his teams have won but, as i posted earlier in a different thread, my choice would be to either get rid of Commolli or have him moved to chief of scouting operations, have Dalglish as director of football and Benitez back as manager with Clarke his assistant. To me, this would be a recipe for success.
That said, Liverpool's brand of football has alot in common with Mourinho's. We play a physical, pressing game based on ball retention and pinning our opponents back. We rely heavily on counter attacks to create any of our chances and those counters are all minimalist. The entire team defends all over the pitch. If we win, we seldom win big.

ReplyDeleteI think it would be fair to say that it was the FA, media, Powar, and Taylor that botched the whole Suarez affair. The FA had an agenda and they forced the so-called independent panel to get a result that was not objective but subjective. The findings published were ridiculous as was the harsh penalty. The media, and powers that be, proceeded to hang Suarez and LFC out to dry. I congratulate Kenny for standing up for Suarez for an unjust finding and biased hearing.

Unless you've got billions to spend you don't reconstruct a poor team into title contenders overnight. Not even City or Chelsea managed that. Kenny's team in the late 80's was, in my opinion, the best football team I'd ever seen before or since. Give him time and you'll reap the rewards.

Plus he is a PR nightmare, which is the last thing we need at the moment after the Suarez affair.
And finally, he does need to have a very large transfer fund, which FSG probably won't supply - and rightly so, if the club is going to be run as a proper business, instead of a rich man's plaything.
It's not your highlighting the Suarez situation that is tedious, it's that it is over, finished, done and dusted but you continue to make it an issue. Let it go for goodness sake! This site has over 100,000 comments (over two comment systems), and many of those disagree with me. I have absolutely no problem with that, but as I've explained a billion times, people who just come here to bitch, moan and hurl insults should just go elsewhere.
Why is this so hard to understand? Just because there is a comments section doesn't mean people have the right to just turn up and hurl insults and sniping derogatory comments.
If you were walking down the street and someone came up to you and started shouting obscenities in your face, would just just stand there and take it under the guide of free speech?! Hell no. Why should it be any different online?
If people cannot debate/discuss football in a civil, polite manner then they are not welcome on this site. It's that simple. I don't care how compelling their views are - debate is meaningless unless it is conducted in an intelligent manner, and that means attacking the argument and not the person
The net is saturated with forums that descend into slanging matches on a regular basis, and I will not allow that to happen here.
Ultimately, It's very simple: Vociferous opposing views are welcome and encouraged here, but as soon as the sniping/insults etc begin, the post will be deleted. I don't want readers to have to scroll through pages of crap to follow the thread of an argument.
People go on about free will and freedom of speech; where has that ever got the human race?! If history proves anything it's that without regulation, human being are animals: genocidal, cruel warmongers who revel in cruelty to their fellow man and stop at nothing to destroy the world they inhabit. Why do you think we have laws? They're necessary because without them, the world would be back in the dark ages right now.
The same underlying principle applies to online discussion: let people do what they like and all you would have is constant insults, slanging matches and nastiness (anyone who frequents football forums will know this to be true), which is why the commenting policy here is the way it is.
As for 'losing support' - that doesn't bother me at all. If people want to never visit this site again that's their choice. I don't do this to win a popularity contest, and in my experience, people who write just to make others happy produce bland, uninspiring content, and that is what loses support in the long run.

ReplyDeletePolarize! Perish the thought, unless you loik at the behaviour of KD during the Suarez debacle! He wanted to get the whole, the worlds against us thing, going on and he had so many people screaming fix it was laughable. I think Morhinio is the only person Liverpool fans ( just the crazy ones) didn't blame for Suarez's short ban!

ReplyDeleteHow could anybody not want the King at Anfield, he has transformed Liverpool in the past 12 months and already got us to a cup final and the quarters of the FA cup. It wasn't long ago we were in the bottom half of the table playing terrible football with Woy!

But in light of your somewhat lowbrow subjective insistence upon shoehorning the Suarez/Evra incident into most of your articles, it appears that you have unfortunately become detrimentally pious and ornery.
You are actually far better than this. You just seem to have subconsciously espoused a similar all-consuming quest for sensationalist provocation to a lot of the tabloid journalism that I previously felt was beneath you.
It's genuinely a shame.
I understand totally that a balanced approach on the Suarez/Evra affair seemed to be beyond everyone who commented on it but I personally felt that a degree of objectivity on your own part would have given you far more credibility among the people to whom your site was aimed - and not just a way of poking a stick at the caged angry dog who myopically felt that 'Suarez is INNOCENT at all costs!'
I'm not saying that I felt Suarez was guilty or innocent in this situation but I felt that you had a platform to objectively explore both sides of the issue, whilst pointing out the classless and vile reactions of every party involved.
But by dismissing one side of the argument totally, you essentially showed your hand too early. It was a similar stance to Roy Hodgson when he appeared to attempt to 'make friends' with United by fawning to Ferguson.
You knew that the Liverpool supporters would respond with vitriol and that you'd get hits on the site. Isn't that basically why you're still tenuously snipping comments on Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra into articles as far reaching as Jose Mourinho managerial links?
Jose Mourinho The new LFC Manager Kenny has been great but he has definatally lost his way, the only way forward for Liverpool is to sell ALL the players and get rid of Kenny and bring in Jose and give him 200million to rebuild the squad and watch the success start. If Kenny stays all Liverpool will show is the 2012 League cup (WOW)
