Sunderland midfielder Stephane Sessengon has been linked with Liverpool several times over the last couple of months, and despite Black Cats manager Martin O'Neill recently dismissing the possibility of a move away, the rumours still persist. Now, the player himself has addressed the speculation surrounding his future.
Speaking to the Northern Echo recently, O'Neill reiterated his desire for the Frenchman to stay at Sunderland:
"I would be massively reluctant to let Stephane go. I would also be pretty confident Stephane is fine and happy here. That is certainly the impression we have been getting.
"He has been fantastic for us. He is only small, but he is very strong with the ball, has great control and is quite quick. That is not something were blessed with, we do not have fantastic pace in the squad.
"From that viewpoint, he stands out at this minute and he is not someone we would be wanting to let go".
As we've seen so many times though, if a bigger club wants a player from a smaller club, the chances are that, eventually, a deal will go through. A couple of weeks ago, the Daily Mail claimed that Liverpool were prepared to open the bidding at £8m, and were 'willing to put together a package that suits both player and his family in a bid to convince him to remain in the Premier League'.
Sessengnon is seemingly aware of interest from the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, but as he told L'Equipe recently, he's not thinking about it:
"Interest from some bigger English clubs? I don't think about that so far. Above all I am thinking to score and assist. We will talk about my future again at the end of the season."
Sessegnon could've said 'I want to stay with Sunderland for the next three years', but he has cleary left the door open there for a potential move at the end of the season.
The midfielder has six goals and seven assists in twenty five games for Sunderland so far this season, which is a creditable return, but is he good enough for Liverpool, and would he fit into the team?

Dont talk crap Mr Kanwar, at least try and get your facts right before publishing this garbage. Sess cost us 6.5 million after his impact this season, his valuation has at least doubled
ReplyDeleteI trust SAFC will tell LFC where to go should they table such an absurd bid. Sessegnon is arguably the form player of the Premier, Sunderland should fight tooth and nail to keep him and, if it proves impossible to do so, any transfer deal must be on our terms. This time, unlike with Bent and Gyan, there simply has to be adequate replacement/s lined up before anyone goes anywhere. And if Carroll is worth £35m, the mind boggles at Sess's value. Of course I do not know what get-out clauses may be contained in his contract.
ReplyDeleteBigger club, whyaye man
ReplyDeleteWould be nice to have him as a option in the squad. Very good player but don't know about first XI player in a big club. He can play in different positions behind the front man, whether it be behind the main striker or on the wings. Could possibly suit a interchanging attacking midfield.
ReplyDeleteNo point bringing in Carroll's transfer fee, as Sessegnon isn't British, let alone English, so his potential transfer fee wouldn't be astronomically absurd.
ReplyDeleteSessengnon definitely has got quality and i think is good enough to play for a big a team like Liverpool. Sessengnon has the quality to open up defenses and Liverpool could do with a player of his quality, only his age would be a factor as he is 28 years old and his value will only drop.
ReplyDeleteI would hope for Liverpool to sign Hoilett in the summer as he will be a free agent and is relatively young and great dribbler.
The gap is closing on the size of our clubs. Liverpool were massive but are no longer massive. Please stop living off your history.
ReplyDelete£8m is absolutely laughable...
ReplyDeleteHenderson - £16m rising to £20m
Tiote - £20m
Modric - £50m
Come back with some real valuations before writing utter garbage - he is worth easy £30m plus...if you can beat a man, hold a ball up, have good ariel presence, and have good pace then £8m, ahahaha
No point going on about British or English... The fact is Sessegnon is a better player than Carroll and is easily worth more than £8m. It's a piss poor article anyway.... Carroll, £35m= mental! SAFCFTM
ReplyDeleteOn New Years Day 2011 when Liverpool played Bolton in a North West derby at a time when their fans were getting hacked off at 'Woy' Hodgson, Sunderland attracted a bigger attendance on an equal playing field for a game aginst Blackburn @ the SoL. That says a lot about the passion and loyalty of both clubs support in different ways. The manner in which people on here [most of who probably live nowhere near Anfield] prattle on about Liverpool being a bigger club smacks of arrogance and sums up why fans nationwide are bored with the glory supporters who follow the Reds, Man U, Chelsea [check out their pre-Abramowich attendances-lol], Arsenal, Man City [can't sell out home or Euro games and recently returned 900 tickets for their local away game at Everton three weeks ago] and Spurs. Show some humility, man.
ReplyDeleteThere is a point as you highlighted Carroll's transfer fee as some sort of measure to value Sessegnon's transfer fee. The fella that replied to you highlighted that Carroll's fee is skewed badly because of the stupid prices paid for British players, hence why its silly in trying to imply Sessegnon would cost more. So yes, there is a point.
ReplyDeleteShall we cut to the chase in all this? Just like last year it is blossoming in the "press" of LFC involvements so just agree we are in for absolutely EVERYBODY in the coming months! Talk about moronic...
ReplyDelete8£ + downing then MAYBE
ReplyDeleteLiverpool won't be able to afford him, it's not like they'll be the only side interested. He'll go to a better club. Liverpool have been poor for years now.
ReplyDeleteBig club? Shit team and you're saying Sess wouldnt get in it? Stupid cunt.
ReplyDeleteI'm really not sure Liverpool are one of the 'big clubs' any more. Add To that their sudden, horrible reputation for racism and I don't see that they could attract Sess.
ReplyDeleteYou have made your point. Now let me make mine. Carroll plays like a donkey and there is simply no denying it!
ReplyDeletesome catty remarks on here about Liverpool, haven't got the money ha! yeah right, racist club ha! yeah right! one player accused of racism and we are a racist CLUB?? get real, if the player wants to go to Liverpool and Liverpool want him badly enough it will happen..
ReplyDeleteAnother Henderson?
ReplyDeleteYou are a tosser Tom SAFC could get 70000 and that still would not make them anywhere near the club is. You are not measured by attendance, you are measured by success you idiot that is what makes you big and Man U may have that in UK, LFC have that in Europe whether it be in the past or not they are twice the club SAFC are sorry but that is the truth.
ReplyDeleteRacist not because of the player but due to the way the club dealt with the situation. I thought it was disgraceful and am sure it's tarnished Liverpool's reputation globally.
ReplyDeleteI think you could afford to buy the player. Just not sure he'd want to go to Liverpool. Could be wrong but my *guess* is he'll only move in England for one of the top four.
Well said, people don't understand that, the club and its supporters are the ones who look racist now.
