£10m wing starlet reveals excitement over possible Liverpool move...

For whatever reason, Liverpool have struggled to produce/buy decent wingers over the last twenty years. Steve McManaman and Patrick Berger aside, the club's wide players have been and continue to be - a massive disappointment.

Most of Liverpool's league winning teams have contained great wingers, and it's no coincidence that the club's failure to win the league for 22 years has coincided with a lack of decent wide-players. With this in mind, it's always pleasing to see the club linked with quality wingers, and Birmingham City's Nathan Redmond certainly fits the bill.

Redmond has been linked with Liverpool several times over the last few months, and the £10m-rated youngster revealed yesterday that he's excited by the speculation. He told The Guardian:

"The speculation about transfers is a compliment and it just kicked me on a bit more.

"When I heard about Manchester City and Liverpool I sat down with my mum and my agent.

"I've talked to the gaffer as well, and he's assured me that as long as I keep working hard, everything should go smoothly."

Redmond has five goals and two assists for Birmingham so far this season, and seems to have the potential to develop into an effective, productive winger.

Having said all that, as I've highlighted before, young attacking players very rarely progress through the ranks and establish themselves in the first team at Anfield, so perhaps Redmond would be better off going elsewhere...?

  1. Looked poor against Chelsea> Lightweight.

  2. I think Ibe, Silva, and in particular Sterling could have more potential than this guy but there is no harm adding another talented youngster to the Academy/Reserves.

With Rodolfo "La Masia" Borrel working with the exceptionally talented youngsters we have (Robinson, Wisdom, Coady, Silva, Sterling, Suso, Adorjen, Teiexera etc) and are looking at signing it will hopefully pay dividends in the next 2-4 years time.

  3. The transfers over the last couple of years mean that we no longer have the time to risk buying more expensive youth projects. All major signings moving forwards need to be capable of delivering to the first team immediately.

Leave any focus on the future to our own reserves/until we've got a quality starting line-up...

  4. lucas ocampus is way better than him. he is much pacier and has more skills and already 6'2 at the age of 17 plays for river plate.

  5. We have sufficient "up-and-coming" what we need is "here-and-now".

  6. The owners don't have the same view hence the investment being made at academy and reserve level. To be honest its not that expensive spending 500k on a youngster with potential world class talent when compared with say an experienced £20m winger that doesn't perform.

We should indeed be buying for the present and in the summer I am sure that is what will happen but at the same time the club should not cut spending on the academy that has been developed to such a high level - that would be a massive mistake.

Even without winning the next gen series (which we have a chance of doing) our acadmey will be at the forefront of alot of the parents of the best young players in europe. If we can get these players in working with Rodolfo, we could develop the next Pique, Xavi, Gerrard, Fowler. That is no exaggeration and the owners and Kenny know that.

  7. Do we really want to be an Arsenal with all the ' Potential ' in the world and win nothing and get absolutely battered against the experienced football clubs ?

The owners have shown their commitment to the club in their first real season at the helm; Thats not worked yet !!!

Its time the owners stepped up and admitted their buy English has flopped with dead weight like Downing ( Absolutely pathetic to watch ), Henderson, Carroll...

What i would hate to see is another bunch of Yanks that think they know ' soccer ' better than the rest of the world; This aint Moneyball!!!

  9. Thats a harsh line at the end ..... 'Young attacking players rarely progress through the ranks and
establish themselves in the first team at Anfiled'

to me this suggests that over the years there have been all these talented players at Anfield not given a chance and have since moved on to show their true class at another team ??? if this is the case, then who do you refer to ?? only Adam Hamill springs to my mind, but his contract was coming to an end and he wanted 1st team football. he had to settle for that at Scotland before continuing his development at the Championship. even now at Wolves he only shows glimpses of his capabilities. is he Liverpool 1st team class ?? ....other players in recent memory are the French gems, but to my knowledge their best achievements were while at Liverpool under Rafa....i am truly excited at the players working under Rodelfo Borrell and the coaches! and am sure that when young attacking players show themselves to be good enough, then they will be given their chance....regardless of age !!

  10. Not another overrated English dud.....When will they ever learn!

  11. The price being mentioned above is £10m, not £500k. As far as I'm concerned, that is enough to buy a good first team player, not a reserve/project.

Irt the NextGen series, we only remain in the tournament on a technicality. And the academy will only be at the forefront for prospective talents if it is proven to promote players into the first team.

  12. I would rather gamble on our youth players and save the money. No more downings please i said before we bought him and hopefully lesson learnt u hope. We need to spend VERY CAREFULLY MOVING FORWARD!!!

  13. for ten million i'd prefer to go for junior hoillett.
hopefully sterling will make the step up in the next season or two.
knowing our luck we'll pay 25mil for theo walcott instead.

  14. Hence why we now only buy the best young players to ensure best possible chance of promotion to the first. Otherwise you may as well bin the whole idea of an academy all together as it will produce one player every 20 yrs out of luck.

  15. We need to start fielding academy/reserve youngsters more than we currently do. Only Kelly, Spearing and Shelvey manage to play more than 3-4 games each season in first team, and I think we haven't seen enough from Shelvey to say he has future in this team, so that means no attacking youngsters have become regular first team players since Gerrard and Owen, which is disastrous statistics.

If the real talents like Sterling don't get their chances now, they will waste time in academy/reserves.

  16. Are you even reading your own argument?

How is pinching youngsters from other teams and dumping them into the academy, "producing" young talent?? If you're spending £10m on a player, why are you expecting him to then come through the academy??

If an academy is just going to be stocked full of multi-million pound players pinched from other academies, then yes, you may as well bin the whole idea! The whole point of an academy is to develop young talent on the cheap (relatively) and avoid paying out those excessive fees to bring in players from elsewhere

  17. Hoillett's contract expires at the end of the season, so he'll be on a free transfer to whoever gives him the best personal offer...

  18. Shelvey didn't come from the academy - we bought him from Charlton, where he was already playing first team football...

  19. Another jerk from another local club.

  20. Stop buying more overpriced mediocre British garabge... we already have way too much of that... keep Dalglish away from the check book as it is obvious the man zero talent for buying top class players...

  21.  yeah you're right-aldridge,shearer,barnes,houghton,beardsley...
    all shit signings.
oh wait you're basing your opinions on 14 months of his entire management career aren't you?

  22. I know that mate, but I mentioned both academy and reserves, where he started before having first team outings.

  23. mate, that was 24 years ago

  24. To inspire the academy and resreserve players we first need a class winger doing it in every match in the first 11. I still don't think we have that player in the team yet.....

  25. Ok, I'm just saying that even if Shelvey does eventually break through as a first team regular, that won't be evidence of the success of our reserves, seeing as we bought him with first team experieence (just like N'gog before him).

I agree with the sentiment of your argument though. I think that plenty of our reserves have in fact been good enough (in comparison to players that have featured in the first team for us, or to kids that have featured elsewhere). That they haven't shone after leaving us says more about our club failing those individuals, than proving that the kids never had the talent to make it in the first place.

  26. OK now I see your point about Shelvey, that's true.

  27. If a player is young enough and has quality LFC should be able to turn him in to good PL player.

Liverpool needs speed on the wings, and I don't think Eden Hazard or Lucas Moura will be coming i to CL-less team, so Liverpool needs to find someone they can make a class player.

I don't know if it's him but you can not blame him for not being good against Chelsea, LFC payed all that money for Downing and he has not been good against anyone.
