Llorrente: "LFC spoke with the club but they wouldn't sell me". Time to try again..?

Liverpool could be in the market for a new striker in January, and one possibility could be Athletic Bilbao's Fernando Llorente, a player the club tried to sign a year ago.

A few months ago, Llorente told Radio Marca how Liverpool tried to sign him:

"Liverpool came to Bilbao and spoke with the club, but it was obvious that they [Bilbao] weren't going to sell me".

in the same interview, he added:

"For the moment, my future is here at Bilbao and I am going to give my all."

Llorente's current contract is up in 18 months, and he's in the process of negotiating a new deal, so now is probably the ideal time for Liverpool to renew their interest in the player.

A few days ago, Bilbao's Sporting Director Jose Maria Amorrortu provided Marca an update on Llorente's current situation:

"We are very confident that Llorente stays with us. He is a very important player. We are working on its continuity, but we have not gone any further.

"I'm optimistic. Fernando has been here for 11 years. This club is a club of values and Fernando knows this.

"We must transmit values and reinforce them because they are what make us different."

If Liverpool tried to sign Llorente before, it's conceivable that they could try and sign him again.

Llorente's comments in response to Liverpool's interest were hardly an emphatic display of loyalty. Note that he said 'For the moment, my future is here at Bilbao'.

Well, that moment has passed; Liverpool need a new striker, so perhaps it would be worth another try?

  1. Llorente is no doubt a great player but he would be just as ineffective as Carroll has been in the current Liverpool side because service from the wide areas has been very poor. Liverpool first need to sign world class wingers and a striker and hope they don't settle for mediocrity like they did in summer transfer.

  2. I'm increasingly worried that Kenny will pay outrageus money for Bent or they will go for Jelavic. Althought Podolski is available for 15m and barrios for 12m, but Kenny will overlook them

  3. How about asking about a striker at velencia...Soldado! Hit him up kenny..im starting to worry hearing names like Bent!

  4. Totally agreed Lion Heart - all of that video looked like a big man thriving on the same sort of service that Carroll would, and hasn't been receiving, at Liverpool.

One big man is enough and Carroll isn't going anywhere anytime soon

  5. Maybe the little man can expedite his dream move to Barcelona and be replaced by a less inedifying character though...

  6. I hope the news iv just read is true and Torres will be back, hes been slashed to 3/1 by skybet from 12/1 to be at LFC in january.Hes not in AVB plans and people must realise H and G broke promises to him, he wanted LFC to be competitive thats all it wasnt about money it was about winning and having the players to compete, now he can see JH is genuine i hope he comes back and the reception he gets will be unbelievable.

  7. there's a whole world difference between lorente and Carroll.. same as between carroll and crouch.. crouch and lorente are fabulous big strikers unlike carroll. carroll. lets be honest to ourselves, caroll cannot control nor pass the ball properly.. nobody in the league will want him even for 10million after his recent performance. we r doomed

  8. Barrios is overrated, he is struggling to get back in the Dvb side , Podo is not a prodigious striker @ club level. He has a wonderful international record but has struggle to translate that form at both Bayern and Koln.

Yes we need a Stiker but we need pace and flair to.

I would love to see Marco Reus , Stefan Jovetic , Leandro Damaio , Sidney Sam, Junior Hoilett, Mesut Ozil, Marko Marin, Javi Martinez, Loic Remy, Seydou Doumbia, Arturo Vidal, Walter Gargano, Abel Hernadez, Daniele De Rossi, Andre Ayew, etc.... Any of these guys would add quality to our squad.

There are loads of talented players out there besides the normal media nonsense.

Andy Carroll is NOT Chicharito! Why does everyone think he would thrive on crosses? Our players have delivered tonnes of crosses with Carroll on the pitch, only for him not to be in a position to capitalise on them! Enrique, Downing, Henderson, Johnson and Suarez whip in cross after cross, alot of them being potential assists, but that's not the kind of service Carroll thrives on. Besides being one of the best headers of the ball, Carroll has a hammer of a left foot and is a strong lad - he needs to be put 1-on-1 or 1-on-2 against defenders, or be allowed to charge at them. Forget about the crosses, it's Stevie G's trademark defense splitting passes from the middle of the pitch Carroll needs more of! And I concur with Llorente only being as effective as Carroll. We don't need Llorente. We need another Craig Bellamy or someone like Cavani - intelligent but fast and able to play both tiki-taka and traditional English kick-and-chase. Higuain is another Fernando Torres and would need space to be effective too. If that's not how our boys are going to play, he would be as big a flop as Carroll in red or Torres in blue.

  11. As does the company that is providing the 3/1 odds, they want naiive punters to lump money on it

Torres is 1/50 to be still at Chelsea at end of January on Betfair

  12. I agree the number of crosses that are put in the box are irrelevant carrol wasn't a regular goal scorer from headers more through or loose balls but he just lost his confidence when he's on the ball terrible finishing has been his problem if he was so good with his head he would have finished at least one of the 4 crosses that gerrard gave him but like i said teribble finishing

  13. Like he was 1-on-1 with the Newcastle goalkeeper???

  14. Torres will still be collecting cobwebs sat on the Chelsea bench for the foreseeable future. We need a hungry goal scorer not a washed-up has-been.

  15. Andy Carroll is a DONKEY he's a bad buy it's that simple he's slow can't anticipate and has no ability to get pass defenders.
STOP TRYING TO DEFEND THE INDEFENSIBLE

  16. guys, believe me, llorente is exactly the kind of attacker liverpool needs, he is skillful with the ball and good in the air.
secondly, marco reus, of mgladbach, men that guy is great. these are the two players liverpool should go for. kk please save the darren bent story, dont spoil the cash men, buy quality not quantity

  18. I can't understand people who claim there is no service from wide areas. We have plenty of balls across the 6 yard box but there has to be someone on the end of them. For me the wingers and full backs have been absolutely good enough. Actually connecting with a target is another matter and it requires understanding and good position from strikers. Suarez will never have the size to worry defenders, Kuyt simply doesn't get into the box often enough. Maxi is the only attacker who consistently finds himself on the end of passes in the final third and he often scores from them. People write off Carroll but I think the understanding needs to improve. Kenny hinted the other day that AC is being asked to play quite a different style of football to what he's used to and that he's making progress on that. That means everyone involved needs to adjust and find the right combination. I'm tired of hearing about the price tag on his head, I just don't care any more. The team as a whole need to find that one system that works best for everyone and obviously it's not there at the moment. Only when we see players making those combinations will we know if the system will really work or not. For all the drama and anguish coming from LFC fans right now, Andy Carroll could have a handful of goals under his belt for the sake of a few inches of difference and in my mind that's good enough. Those few inches are intangible, impossible to produce. It either happens or it doesn't and I think even for the very best of players luck plays a massive part.

  20. Llorente will rot at Bilboa and la liga. He needs ro come to Liverpoola and show his stuff in the EPL. Only then his ranking in world football would be measured cos Liverpool has all the infrastructure to make him one. Just look at how we develop Spaniards like Torres, Alonso, Reina, Albaloa and Luis Gracia into  world class players. Me, Ashfah loves Llorente.

  21. How meny goal has Liorente got so far this season Soldado is a goal machine. Llorente to Carroll no question but Soldado would put the ball in the back of the net more so if it's possible let get the GOALS

  22. you love everyone...

  23. I think we need a striker only for this season alone. A striker who can hold the ball, dribble few defenders and score goal with closed eyes (i.e proven goal scorer). I see players like Tevez, Drogba, RVP or even Forlan will do that type job for us this season. We are in effect playing with only 10 men when we include Andy Carroll in the team.

This season is what should matter for LFC. Forget about building team for the future; you win the title with what you have now and the based on the win you build the team for future. If we buy players for the future and by the time they are ready other PL teams are not going to sit idle and see LFC growing.
