Old Trafford legends Roy Keane and Paul Ince were livid with Man United's 'schoolboy defending' at Anfield earlier today, and both players were disappointed that Alex Ferguson's team could not turn [what they perceived to be] superior possession and quality into goals.
Summarising the game on ITV, Keane was typically blunt about United's defensive failures:
"Poor goals from United's point of view; absolutely shocking.
"I've seen [Patrice] Evra in a lot of big games and I think he gets caught out alot.
"[For the winning goal] He should've tucked in a bit when he saw Carroll going up for it; expect Carroll to win it - he's 6"4!"
Ince, who memorably scored a crucial 89th minute equalising goal FOR Liverpool against United in 1999, argued that a draw would've been 'a fair result', and also identified Evra as a weak defensive link:
"The second half became a little bitty; nothing was really going on, but it was just schoolboy defending from United. getting into the right position is something that Evra should know about.
"Once United took Scholes off, I think they lost it a bit; they lost the dictation and possession of the game".
Keane was quick to praise Liverpool for staying focused, and he was also impressed with the way the team responded to Kenny Dalglish's stinging criticism after the Bolton game last week:
"Great reaction from Liverpool's point of view. Kenny Dalglish questioned the players' attitudes and their hunger, but now they've got to a cup final during the week and they're beat United today.
"United will be kicking themselves; in terms of possession and quality, United edged it, but that doesn't win you football matches.
"Credit to Liverpool though; whatever lack of quality they had today they stuck at it, and the substitutions for Liverpool definitely turned the game for them".
There was a touch of twisted poetic justice about the way the game ended; the winning goal came as a result of an Evra mistake at the same part of the ground as his infamous spat with Luis Suarez, who was watching on in the stands.
Great win for Liverpool, but I would trade it for a win against Wolves next week.

Hey don't be so harsh on Evra!!! for all we know someone may have abused him at some point during the game
ReplyDeleteI will bet my bottom dollar we beat Wolve's Liverpool are on a high now.YNWA.
ReplyDeleteConsidering we had 2 days to recover from Wednesdays epic battle I think the lads did well but Fergie wont accept defeat graciously, see: http://www.thefootballnetwork.net/main/s237/st174699.htm?
ReplyDeleteMaybe he and Evra will learn that lying cheating bastards don't prosper.
Jaimie...I can't believe the CRAP you write. To see ManUre lose is the best thing since sliced bread...to see LFC do it to them is the cream on top! Trading today's result for a win over Wolves is sheer lunacy...and we will beat them anyway!
ReplyDeleteAgree that beating Wolves will be much more important result than this game but this game has lifted morale of everyone at the club and hopefully now Liverpool show some of the cup spirit in the league too.
ReplyDeleteAgree, mate... he may have been serially and serously abused in more than one language, though on UK ground, and that on top of being cheated by the referee for the coin toss.
ReplyDeleteJokes aside, great win.
YNWA
Sorry, I didn't know I wasn't allowed to have my own opinion. I'll ask you for permission next time.
ReplyDeleteTalk about trading this result for a win over anyone is a bit silly, IMHO. Why?
ReplyDeleteFear factor. Teams will see us on the up and won't be thinking that we're any sort of pushovers as we were at Bolton. They will see that, after Kenny's rocket up their arses, Liverpool are heading in the right direction to become a team to be feared once again. Hopefully a good signing or 2 before Tuesday and we'll have a strong run in.
Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. This was a huge game and we played SO well. I'm flying over from South Africa for the Carling Cup final and hope to be back in May for the FA Cup final.

ReplyDeleteIMO that was Carroll's best game so far!!! Hope Kenny stars him against wolves to capitalize on today's performance!! It's always nice to beat united.
ReplyDeleteYNWA!
It was definitely Carroll's best game so far but with him in the team Liverpool are not at their best as they are without him but at last he is contributing something but he needs to do more to earn more play time.
ReplyDeleteLost count of the amount of times we have won against big sides but go onto fall apart against lesser sides.
ReplyDeleteProof is in the pudding. Don't get too excited.
If we are going to play hoof-ball, than he is the ideal player.
ReplyDeleteA short passing probing style, than he should be on the bench.
Odd signing, considering how KK likes to play the game
Your totally negative I notice this on all of your posts, what's the deal? Carroll was good in the air and good with it on the deck and it's something he can build on. How is he not a Kenny type player? A good player who can add something to the team is a ANY manager type player. I have posted this a few times an I hate to say I told you so but I said Carroll an Downing WILL come good (it's very early days but it's lookin better) and also Bolton game is a catalyst (also early days but I'm just reminding people it looks good).
ReplyDeleteIt was a great goal well picked out by Reina to find Carroll, nice flick onto Kuyt who had given EVRA THE slip and good finish by the man for the big games Kuyt.
ReplyDeleteCarroll proving his worth when the football fails more then one way to score a goal!
I agree Reinas pinpoint pass to Carroll was something Reina does a lot so why cant the players find Carrolls head if reina can.
ReplyDeletePlayers have found Carrolls head but he likes to find the cross bar! It completely undid United defence! Can't think of to many times Reina has kicked it long from a goal kick we usually play it short, first time this season as well someone has been close enough to take advantage of a Carroll flick on or knock down!
ReplyDeleteI would never trade a win over Manchester United for a win over Wolves. YNWA.
ReplyDeleteI'm not mate, just being more optimistic than most who post on here. I know there's work to be done but I'm just enjoying the club's last 2 results.
ReplyDeleteAnother optimist, are you feeling ok Chucky? I thought it was just me.
ReplyDeleteHaha, nah I'm always on here being optimistic mate. I think I have a good knowledge of the game an not FIFA and Champ Manager and don't expect a team in transition to above Arsenal, Man United, Man City, Tottenham and Chelsea when they have mostly spent a lot more then us, had a manager longer, quality youth system, same board etc. (certain clubs have a few of these or even all). I think some fans think we have a divine right to be up there due to a year of stability and some signings. We don't. I'd be more p**sed off if I was an Arsenal fan. And Chelsea have spent a lot an aren't exactly flying either, people need to accept that Rome wasn't built in a day an that players don't always slot into a new team straight away, it's been proved time an time again-Lucas is a major one who it took ages for, Crouch is one it took 6 months for an look what happened, and Keane is one who didn't get a chance. I mention these because Carroll has it all the time, he's only just hit 23 (younger then Crouch an Keane was) an with less experience in the prem, his cost was above the value-but it clearly wasn't our money.

ReplyDeleteKenny likes a no9 who can get on the end of a cross, he did it with Shearer. You can have other players doing the short stuff on the ground.
ReplyDeleteI feel so sorry for evra. It couldnt have happened to a nicer little man. Now if Suarez has a blinder at old trafford it would be the cherry on the cake.
ReplyDeleteThe Cheating bastard was sitting in the stands Dickhead.
ReplyDeleteHeard you the first time.
ReplyDeleteJust fed up of the same old pattern with us.
Turn up in the cups
Turn up against the big teams
Turn up in two-legged ties
But we can't be arsed to turn up against the other sides in the league. I find that sort of attitude disrespectful to both us the fans and the opposition.
Same old, same old for the last two decades
We aren't supposed to be some lower league side that looks forward to giant killing in cups.
Your defence of the Carroll signing as a very rose-tinted spinning. Veron was a quality player but he simply didn't fit in at United, and Carroll, in terms of what he has proven, is nowhere near close to Veron. The same goes with Shevchenko, Kaka, etc. Far far far betters players than Carroll have failed at clubs. So this 'any type of manager' player is rose-tinted nonsense.
It was a hoof.
ReplyDeleteHe absolutely ruined Newcastle, who were a really good team.
ReplyDeleteIs that true? They had finished fourth in the league when he took over and he took em to runners up. Plus an FA cup final. They finished about 13th the next season admittedly but beat Barca in europe. I think he deserved a bit longer at a club that never wins anything.
ReplyDeleteOnly applies to the teams above us in the league except Spurs. Teams below us do not fear us.
ReplyDeleteas it all the time, it won't let me reply to your last message so I'll reply here, briefly, I'm not rose tinted towards Carroll I just see talent in him and see what he can bring to the team like he did today, you can't, maybe you can't see talent. Maybe I am rose tinted, but is Capello, Dalglish, Comolli, Pardew, Hughton etc?????? As for us turning up in cups, if we just turned up in cup games then why have we not won one since 2006? And if we don't bother against 'lesser' sides why is it only Bolton that has outplayed us this season????? You really don't make sense. As I said, maybe go and support City an enjoy those victors against the lesser teams, but then wonder why try don't turn up V Liverpool. That's football. It's not Fifa where the team with the most stars wins.
ReplyDeleteIt was route one! Executed with pure precision you need to watch it again!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWe have to thank KK for bringing a certain Didi Hamann to the English game when he was at Newcastle!
ReplyDeleteShocking to see a side that did so well under Keegan, a few years later finished 4 points clear of relegation under KK. He continued that dud form the following season and he was let go. Deserved to stay, my foot.
ReplyDeleteIt all started to go downhill fast from there.Only now they have just recovered.
Not many Newcastle fans like him for good reason.
Can't believe he broke up the Shearer-Ferdinand partnership. The same with Ginola.
One of the best attacking sides in the PL era ruined by KK.
You can't take different opinions can you?
ReplyDeleteInstead you come up with belittling and petty comments of 'you can't see talent', 'not fifa', etc. All this does is make you seem very petty and desperate over people who have different opinions to you and can't think of a good non-personal riposte. Grow up and accept your opinion isn't fact.
Secondly, outplaying is different from winning.
Clearly, we haven't won enough against lesser sides.
'outplaying'? whats outplaying got to do with the fact that we drop so many points against lesser sides? And sheesh, you got the nerves to say I am not taking sense. Bloody hell.
You can shove your 'outplaying' where the sun don't shine. Take 'grinding it out wins' over so-called 'outplaying' draws/defeats. We clearly have a weak mentality, otherwise we wouldn't drop so many points against lesser sides.
I'd prefer a proper attitude of giving it our all against the lesser sides, even if we have to resort to grinding it out. Big teams do that, don't you know.
Just because I say we turn up in cups, doesn't necessarily mean that I think we have won cups of every season. Do you always take thing so literally in such a naive manner? Or is it just when it suits your pathetic agenda of belittling anyone whose opinion differs from you?
Thirdly, who the hell are you to tell me not to support Liverpool and instead support someone else?
Who made you judge-jury of who gets to be a fan of Liverpool?
Get over yourself
People like you that makes Liverpool fans look bad, with your rose-tinted opinions of the mediocre standards set for the majority of the past two decades and resorting to bashing any fan who dares not to follow the sheep mentality.
Nothing great about Evra just because he plays for the scums looked good but if you put him into Wigan team, he cant perform.
ReplyDeleteHow about Keegan selling Andy Cole to Man U !!!!!!!!! Didn't that ruin Newcastle more then the sale of Ferdinand?
ReplyDeleteTaking this kind of personally aren't we sweetheart. To be fair YOUR the one following MY opinions around, every time I write a positive, you write a negative after it, so your the one with the bashing. I think you can look at all of my posts and see that if somebody has a different opinion to me it doesn't tend to annoy me, what does annoy me is LFC having a good week and people like you 'supporters' putting a dampener on it and not giving credit where credit is due. Another thing that annoys me is people expecting instant success, yes, we ARE LFC and SHOULD be challenging but after the last few seasons of mediocrity Kenny should be given more then 12 months of funds, training and management to get it right, I refer to FIFA as you seem to think that suddenly we should be above the likes of Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and City who have all had The same manager for a while, or a lot of funds for a while, or the same owners for a while etc etc. we have had 3 managers in 2 years, 2 owners in 2 years and a decent cash flow for 2 nearly 3 transfer windows. I am not rose tinted, I am optimistic and a realist and don't expect Rome to be built in a day. I also 'support' the team and players and I can see why Kenny bought players in. I was disappointed and angry after the Bolton game (I was there) and also after the Blackburn game ad Stoke game (there also) and so criticised our team, but I also realised that these things take time and I realised that the team tried in the Blackburn and stoke games. Your saying that outplaying isn't enough but then saying we aren't trying. How do you outplay a team like Stoke without trying?????? Please explain. We definitely lack a cutting edge and we DO need to grind out results but when we achieve good and great results against City an United you should learn to enjoy it and maybe knock criticising on the head. Your not a critic, your a supporter.
ReplyDeleteI'm following you around? Funny that, as you came onto this thread to reply to one of my post from ANOTHER article.
ReplyDeleteThat gave me a giggle.
'sweetheart'?Oh clever(!) Another idiotic jibe. Really does you no favours with silly stupid comments like 'fifa', 'support City', etc. I'm the one with the bashing? Hypocritical, coming from you.Sorry but if someone is going to tell me not to support the club I have been supporting for over the last three decades, I'm going to be annoyed. Who do you think you are telling people that they should support someone else? I'm taking it personal? Funny that, coming from a person who automatically resorts to anyone having a different opinion to you by saying they play football games, etc. You simply can't take it, the moment anyone has a different opinion. I never once said we should be above the likes of United, City, Chelsea, etc. Never said that once. Find me a comment where I have said that? No? I simply ask for a more gritty and determined attitude we show against the likes of City, United and Chelsea against the likes of Bolton, etc. But nearly every single year in the past two decades, we fail to do that. That is why I don't get carried away with wins like yesterday as I have been supporting Pool for a long time and I know what usually happens in the long run, i.e., balls up against the next lesser side. As we simply do not have a gritty 'win at all costs' mentality throughout the majority of the season. There is a difference between 'outplaying' and 'win at all costs'. The two don't always go together. More often not, all we do is 'outplay' and we have seen from Arsenal how far that gets you. Not very far at all.Arsenal have been 'outplaying' teams left, right and centre for the last 5 years and have got nothing to show for it. Why? Because they don't know how to do gritty, doing the necessities or 'win at all cost' mentality. So I never get carried away with all this 'we outplayed them' excuses we make for whenever the team fails to win against a lesser side as that simply masks the fact that we have a weak mentality that has been bred for a long time now. .
Nope, as we clearly did well in the subsequent years as well as bringing in Les Ferdinand.
ReplyDeleteFerdinand-Shearer were better than Cole-Beardsley.
They were like a world class version of Carroll-Ameobi partnership
Dalglish brought in the likes of Guivarch, Hamilton, ageing Rush, ageing Psycho Pearce, ageing Barnsey, Andersson, etc. He had some decent buys (Given, Nobby and Speedo) but the flops and the dire football played outweighed that by a ton.
Still gives me a giggle that Des Hamilton signing by KK.
The goal tally went down drastically.
Dalglish left the likes of Gullit a load of rubbish to work with. Dalglish may have done better at Newcastle than the managers that followed but he had better players to work with, when he came in, whilst the other managers were left the rubbish legacy left by Dalglish.
Annoys me to this day that he dismantled that Keegan team. Ferdinand and Ginola mostly.
We were a great attacking side that was ruined by Dalglish and his reign had a knock-on effect down the line.
There was no need for him to change the Keegan side in the way he did. Only reason was for his ego and that a new managers wants his own team.
Good riddance...for a Newcastle fan of course.
Though of course that doesn't mean he won't do well at Liverpool again, especially considering the form of the second half of last season.
Carroll needs to play in a two-man partnership, in a direct attacking style. Preferably with a more of a physical type of striker next to him. He is only a lone striker if used in a long ball counter attacking game.
Weird signing though as Dalglish seems to want to play the short passing game. Carroll doesn't have the refined technical hold up play to pull that off as the main striker in a such set up.
Anyhoo, I am done with this angle, regardless of how you belittle my comments with childlish nonsense like 'this is not FIFA', football manager, son, sweetheart, support City, etc.
ReplyDeleteI'm done with it too. To be fair you repled on two of my different comments on two different threads. An I didn't come on here to do that, scroll upwards an you'll see I wrote to you earlier an it's a continuation as it wouldn't let me reply. I thoroughly explained myself and my angle and why I am annoyed. You still don't explain yourself, you spout about grinding out results an have changed your tune, earlier on in the argument you said our players weren't trying at all against 'lesser' teams. You've repeatedly changed your argument, and as for the jibes you seem to be crying about, I have used them to back up what I'm saying, you, like a lot of other fans expect us to be in the top four beating all of the weaker teams an the quality teams because we've spent 100 mil. That's not how footie works. In a nutshell.
ReplyDeleteHate it when people like Chuckyred like to bully people. He has done it repeatedly to different people on this website
ReplyDeleteNothing but a neanderthal bully. What makes it even funny is that he isn't even right half the time. What is pathetic is how he makes stuff up about people have allegedly said. I've read the comments and Chucky sais so and so said this, when they clearly haven't.
ReplyDeleteJust goes to show how petty he is that he has to resort to lying, character assassination and bullying.
A silly little keybord warrior.
'that lying cheating bastards dont prosper' i fear for our suarez the. :'(
ReplyDeleteSo true, Baggie.
ReplyDeleteThe worse bit for me is when people like Chucky tell other fellow Pool fans to go support someone else.
That for me is so wrong and arrogant.
Gerrard was shocking and is totally overrated. When Scholes make him look a plodder you know his is shit.Liverpool were totally outplayed by Utd reserves yet it took a hopless goalkeeper and a hail mary punt to win.If anyone think Liverpool are on the way back just wait for the league games comming up.As the real scum of England have spent way more than the greatest club since they last won the league you would expect more than long ball hoofers.
ReplyDeleteIts people like Chucky that ruin threads
ReplyDeleteI hate to sound 'negative' as i know so many people don't like it, but, to be fair, we had a good week but we drew City without two of their best players, and with help from the ref, and we beat Man Utd reserves on Saturday. Delighted that we won but I'm not sure Wolves away is a much easier game, to be honest. I think we should actually forget about Evra, to be honest, and put our own house in order with regard to idiot supporters at our club. Our club's behaviour, and Chelsea's, has made it less likely that someone who does suffer abuse will come forward now, so I hope that, as a club, we are proud of that.
ReplyDeleteSo according to Chucky's implied logic, we are all 'Shelb' in disguise!
ReplyDeleteEvra has been making mistakes all season. As has Cole. But all I hear about is what a liability Johnson is, whereas these guys continue to be lauded as world class...
ReplyDelete
