Liverpool striker admits: "We need someone like Owen or Fowler..."

In light of Liverpool's continued problems in front of goal, former Anfield striker David Fairclough has has called on Kenny Dalglish to sign a proven goalscorer in the January transfer window.

Fairclough, who scored 55 goals for Liverpool during his time at Anfield, argued on LFC TV:

"The goalscoring issue is a major talking point at the moment, and you have to address that I think.

"You need 4 good strikers, and I think Liverpool are probably a man short in that department.

"Van Persie has scored 14 goals this season, and our top scorer has 4. It's not comparable, is it?

"With the chances that we've had - how may times are we saying it this season? We're near the mark, we do this and we do that, and we threaten goals, but we're not killing off teams.

"We need somebody like Owen or Fowler, or a John Aldridge; a real poacher; somebody who hangs around the six yard box and gets a bagful of goals".

I think most Liverpool fans would agree with this. The goalscoring records of Liverpool's attacking players leaves a lot to be desired this season:

* Luis Suarez: 2 goals in the last 12 league games

* Andy Carroll: 2 goals in the last 16 league games

* Dirk Kuyt: No league goals this season

* Stewart Downing: No league goals this season

* Jordan Henderson: 1 league in the last 14 league games

A striker who scores regularly is clearly an absolute priority, and hopefully the club will sign someone in January. Failing that, why not give the likes of Adam Morgan or Nathan Ecclestone a chance?

  2. I have said from the start - I would love to see Adam Morgan given a chance, but now that we are upto the semis in the carling cup as well, I doubt it ........ had we played with maxi against fulham and the score read 3-0 to us , we can give Morgan a chance on those instances ...... he will fit in more ..... Carroll does not even try, the least he can do ........ it is always Suarez running after lost causes ........ "best header of the ball" , Really?? he can't direct it properly, rarely wins many with his size ........ Crouch used to win everything, his hold up play was excellent, and used to direct it well so often for Gerrard and the ones running in ............. Crouch created even though he was not scoring initially .......... honestly, Carroll is not trying and does not want to be here it seems, goes to ground half the time with his size ........ could our strikers - yes Carroll and Suarez stop going to ground that easy ...... Be Men and get an attitude - the Liverpool One

  3. Carroll tries to get a decent touch, drops- we loose posset ion. Morgan is to young? Nahh besides he would still put more effort and quality than Carroll does
The though of what they could have done with 35million just makes me sick!

  4. Nobody apart from seems to notice how poor we are from dead-ball situations.  We aren't converting pressure into goals and are putting more pressure on everybody when they have a sight of goal.

    - The only team in the EPL (thus far after 14 games and approx 90-100 corners) who haven't scored from a corner.

    - Only 2 goals from free-kicks. Stevie G scored directly against Man Utd (with the help of a Giggs' error) and Suarez scored from a Charlie Adam crossed free-kick against Sunderland back on day one of the season..

Last night was a great example of this. We got successive corners at the start of the second half and did nothing with them. When Adam was fouled by Senderos 4 players debated who'd take the free-kick before Bellamy's shot was blocked. Likewise the free-kick at the death.

Watched the Spurs game against Bolton on Saturday. Spurs strikers had a 'mare but they scored 2 goals from corners that had obviously been well-practised on the training ground.

If I could text Dalglish or Clarke I'd recommend we do likewise.

  5. Maxi is a goal scorer(ed)!! Why washe left out of the Fulham tie? Daglish I am afraid lacks the nous to take Liverpool forward. His first mistake was that instead of introducing gradually the new recruits he ditched the players who had done well last season. No wonder Miereles jumped ship. Maxi and Kuyt I'm surprised haven't. And to what effect - the new recruits thrown in at the deep end have also struggled. We won't win the league with a romantic tolerance of KK's ineptitude. The goodwill /romance for Daglish I fear will last long, so no joy for Liverpool for another few years. Fenway's initial reluctance to appoint KK will have be proven right. What a shame

  6. the owners of this club have to give kenny a long hard look to see if he should be the main man here, yes he backs luis at all times but liverpool can not keep losing games like this, bad managing on kennies part.

  7. KD is a stubburn manager who like andy caroll the useless striker that cany score goals but can drink beer all whole day. KD is disgrace manager and his transfer is totally failure! i hope john henry sack him asap!

  8.  Ya, we need strikers like Owen and Fowler with killer instints. Torres has gone and could be possible to being him back. Maxi should start against Fulham but Caroll was preffered, i guess Caroll could be back to his ld club soon.

  9. Go and get Nicholas Anelka on a 2 year deal in January, possibly available on a free!!!

  10. Those that want Kennys head. Shut your pie hole. When are we gonna see some continuity unless we start now? He´s been our manager for like one year and already some call for his departure from the club. Get a grip.

  11. Good point about the dead ball conversions... ever since Hyppia left we have not looked deadly in attacking the ball from corners and scoring, Kyrgiakos looked threatening but his time was always going to be short lived.

  12. Purchasing a striker in Jan will speak a thousand words about Carroll's failure so not sure KD will do that, but with only 17 goals amongst the entire team we need one that will work with the pass and move ethos bellamy, suarez, maxi, kuyt display at times.

If the argument is Carroll is for the future, well we need a striker to function in the present so whilst Andy is working on his game 2 years from now someone who can offer something in the games between jan and may would help.

budget maybe a problem, lets not be fooled that we can go and convince Higuain to leave R. Madrid or villa to leave barca for anfield (frankly why would they?) ... it may be out of the FSG policy but Anelka may not be a bad idea ... if we have a bit of money then maybe Soldado can be lured but it will be hard.

  13. I don't know what to say about Carroll anymore to be honest. I think there was a slight and I mean slight, improvement against fulham but he is not taking any risks!

He should be bullying defenders and intimidating them, not trying to hold up the ball with no end product. And Suarez is going to get in trouble sooner or later if he keeps up his antics.

  14. Carrol must watch Ibrahimovic(AC milan star) style play..learn from that how the big/tall striker play or perform..or carrol can be loaned out to ac to learn direct from ibra.

  15. About time we gave Eccelstone,Amoo,Ngoo,Pacheo or Adorjan a chance they are all 18+ now and deserve a run in the first team or are they going to disappear like Nemeth,Dalla Valle,Hammill,Ince and Bruna we need someone to start scoring without spending a fortune.

  16. I cannot believe you have just labelled Kenny a disgrace manager. If you are a Liverpool fan you should be ashamed. Yes he gives Caroll the chances that maybe some managers wouldnt. Yes he should give someone else some game time to try and prove their worth but this does not make him a disgrace by any standards. What would be the advantage of sacking him? He has brought the players together and the football they have played for the majority of the season has been 100 times better than last season. We are missing someone to convert chances that is all. Besides if you sacked him, in your wisdom who would you replace him with??? Before you comment next time please read back your statements and decide whether they are actually worth posting.

  18. @ Gu Gu Weng .. dude, KK's transfers is not a fail.. he didnt buy for NOW. Beginning of last season, all we wanted was to remain in the middle half of the log, yet KK brought us further... With that and the bright start to this season, we tend to forget that LFC is still under construction. It was never going to a top 3 season for LFC. Also, remember, Carrol didnt want to come to LFC, he was sold by his manager, from a team that catered for HIM...LFC is trying to play total football again, like KK's epic team of the 80's. Imagine if u will, 2yrs from now, Carrol, Hendo, Coates, Lucas, Adam, Suarez, (add one prolific striker) and Downing is playing with confidence and NOT hitting the woodwork so much... U think u will be so negative then? I think KK and the boys has done a tremendous job so far... or wud u like Roy back at the helm? or wud u want to end up like Chelsea that changes managers like Suarez changes direction?

  19. give adam or eceleston a run out.
They may be young but in a game that a players peak at aprox 26 is there realy a thing as to young. If you have the talent your never to young.

  21. lol, most of these writers should be tarred, feathered and possibly gang raped in prison for writing the dribble we read every day online... My latest gripe is with Brad Pinard, who writes for footballfancast... he lists Coates, Bryan Ruiz and Connor Wickam as being in the top 10 Premier League Transfer flops of the season...

  22. Carrol is not effective, why not give Adam Morgan or Nathan Ecclestone a chance ? I am afraid Kenny may be sacked or asked to move up if he keep giving excuses. WE can dominate the whole game 80% to 20%, whats the use when we cannot score. Except the mid and lower teams to come to Anfield and PARK their buses in their 6 yard box.Its have proven that Liverpool cannot break such teams down this season.

  24. I'm really not sure why the statistics in the article above are expounded as they have been.

If we are looking to compare league performances this season, imo, I would say the following statistics presents a more realistic reflection of player's performances in the league:- Suarez Played 14 (13 starts and 1 sub or 1160 mins) = 4 Goals; Suarez has scored a goal every 290 mins or 3.2 games. Caroll P 13 (8 Starts and 5 Subs or 769 mins) = 2 Goals; Caroll has scored one goal every 385 mins or every 4,2 games. Adam: P 14 (14 Starts and 0 Subs or 1229 mins) = 2 Goals; Adam has scored one goal every 615 mins or every 6,8 games. Bellamy: P 8 ( 3 Starts and 5 Subs or 326 mins) = 1 Goal;Craig has scored one goal every 326 mins or every 3,6 games. Maxi: P 2 (1 Start and 1 Sub or 94 mins) = 1 Goal; Maxi has scored one goal every 94 mins or every 1 game. Henderson: P 14 (10 Starts and 4 Subs or 890 mins) = 1 Goals; Hendo has scored one goal every 890 mins or every 9,9 games. Kuyt: P 12 (8 Starts and 4 Subs or 814 mins) = 0 Goals; Downing: P 14 (12 Starts and 2 Subs or 1102 mins) = 0 Goals; Therefore, according to this analysis, Maxi and Suarez lead the list. Followed by Craig and Caroll in that order. By this reckoning Suarez and Maxi should start every game. And also, based on a statistical expansion from last season, Ngog should have also started every game. We also shouldn't forget that whilst most players want to play every game, things like age and tactics come into play. Maxi and Craig have made their best cases for getting into the team and are professionals as well as fairly resolute characters in that when they are not playing they seem to be able to handle it. I think, should we fail to play caroll and downing, this could have a detrimental impact on the players who by all accounts should be the future of this team.

  25. Yes. Forgot. So one goal from the 110 corners we have taken this season ( sadly I counted them)

  26. cant believe the people are saying we should sack kenny... disgraceful

    ReplyDelete
  27. Agreed. Ridiculous suggestion, but people are entitled to their opinions.

  28. He will get sacked at the end of the season anyway. There's no chance he will lead us to the top 4 with the decisions he is making, and that was the premise under which he was given the job. We need more than just a finisher. Goals should be coming from all over the park, not just one player! Although, yes we do need a finisher. Dropping players after they score goals and including Carroll and playing Henderson wide right to justify their insane price tags is hindering our performances. Sad but true I'm afraid. YNWA

  29. KK mission for this season was to get a top 4 finish. That was the premise under which he was given the job, otherwise he gets sacked. Buying for 2 years away and getting sacked half way through your plan doesn't sound too clever to me. Plus, Hendo and Carroll were far better at Sunderland and Newcastle respectively. Shouldn't they be progressing not regressing?? Suarez was clinical too at Ajax, now he can't hit a barn door!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. i like dat one he can't hit a barn door. carrol  i use to think the world of him but now all i see is one lazy player being guided by luis and even at that he does not listen...kenny in my opinion has to go hes way too complicated, he should have played the same players that are winning him games, as for maxi he may be one of the smartest players liverpool have but yet he benches him it makes no sense.
being from Uruguay this liverpool team its getting more interesting by the day, now they want to buy ramirez.lol.

  31. We need far more than 1 striker.

We need at the very least 2 quality strikers as Kuyt , Bellamy and Maxi are ageing and that is possibly why they are not getting as much game time as we would of liked.
But that is not all we need a decent dm to cover for Lucas and last but not least 2 top quality attacking midfielders as Adam is not up to standard yes he makes the occasional good pass from distance but that is few and far between and Gerrard is getting to the stage where i doubt he will ever be a consistent player for us any more and Henderson has less goals in him than Adam. i like Shelvey who imo is far more the new Gerrard than Hendo but he needs continuous game time to be the player we all know he could be.

  32. the problem is not lack of players who can win aerial duels , but the quality of the delivery ........ charlie adam came with a reputation but sadly has not delivered the same crosses that he did at Blackpool ........ either we are putting less emphasis on dead-balls in training with trying to make Carroll play pass and move so that he somehow comes good on matchday and makes Dalglish's ego feel good ......... I am sorry, but I was totally pissed when Maxi did not play against Fulham, he himself would have been too - and we might be shooting ourself in the foot by not using someone's rich vein of form and instead using Andy Carroll's presence - because that is what it is - only a presence ....... no form, no pressure, no nothing .... people say he is a "defenders nightmare" - at the moment he surely isn't ........ he lands on his back side if he gives more effort than a girl to win a header or a tackle ....... what are we doing not playing Maxi ?? hasn't he scored and contributed enough ?? Where is the justice ?? Please Kenny Dalglish - You are bringing it on yourself ....... Spearing was poor , I doubt he would have been that poor had we continued with him - the lad lost his form - hope Maxi doesn't too ......... SERIOUSLY , WHAT ARE WE DOING ??  Sorry for targetting Carroll ........ but main 2 problems are - Carroll and our dead ball deliveries - and staying on our feet !!!!
