LFC Legends warn: DO NOT sign this "poor man's Fernando Torres..."

It's no secret that Liverpool have struggled to score goals this season, and despite the talents of Luis Suarez, the club still (arguably) lacks a 'fox in the box' goal-poacher; a Robbie Fowler-type player with a knack for scoring goals regularly. One player constantly linked with Liverpool is Jermain Defoe, but club legends Ray Houghton and Gary Gillespie insist that he is not the player Liverpool need.

Gillespie didn't mince his words when asked whether Liverpool should sign Defoe in January:

"Jermain Defoe wouldn't be for me. He's a poor-man's Fernando Torres and I don't think he sees anyone else when he gets the ball at his feet".

Houghton was a little bit more complimentary, acknowledging that Defoe 'is a goalscorer' with 'a tremendous shot', but he also agreed that Liverpool should look elsewhere:

"I think he [Defoe] is very individual though; if he doesn't like you, he doesn't pass to you. If we couldn't integrate him into the starting XI, it would be a problem.

"He likes to play on the shoulder of the last defender, he wants little balls played in behind the centre-halves.

"Whether he's the type of player who could play with Suarez, with the intricate one-twos, I'm not so sure".

What do you think? If Defoe was available in January, would you take him?

  1. poor mans f ernando torres? lol.....liverpool wouldnt be able to get defoe!!!! he is a proven goalscorer who is very unlucky not to be starting as regularly for spurs as he would like because of a certain mr. van der vaart.....defoe has scored virtually everytime he has come on for spurs, and to say he is a poorer version of that spanish cart horse is a fucking joke!

  2. a bit out of order from Gary and actually unfounded ,the same can be said of Houghtons statement to a lesser extent,  I am a Lverpool man but statements like that mght shape some minds but not mine, we should have bought him years ago, I suppose they signings like Morientes, Crouch and Voronin were more suitable lol

  4. I agree with Roy Houghton that Jermaine Defoe is a "poor man's Fernando Torres". Either we get somebody like him or forget Defoe.
