DALGLISH admits: Infection could've ENDED Steven Gerrard's career...

After almost 7 months out injured, Steven Gerrard returned in October against Man United and scored a great goal at Anfield. Joy turned to despair soon after though as he was then struck down with a mystery infection, which has led to a further two months on the sidelines. With Gerrard;s return seemingly imminent, Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has revealed that the infection could've ended the captain's career.

Speaking to the Press ahead of today's game with Aston Villa, Dalglish confirmed that Gerrard's infection had now healed, but hinted that things could've been much worse:

“If it [the infection] hadn’t been dealt with quickly and properly it could have ended up more serious, but he got fantastic treatment and it’s been sorted and solved.

“It was unknown territory for us. The credit goes to our medical people who identified it and reacted.”

“When you consider what he has been through he has done unbelievably well. But he has a strong character and that is reflected in coming through what he’s been through.

“The closer you get to coming back the more excited you are and Steven is feeling that way. We’ll probably have to calm him down a wee bit when he gets close to full fitness".

It would've been an absolute tragedy if Gerrard had been forced to retire so early through injury. Thankfully, that didn't happen, and as Kenny says, the injury is now 'sorted and solved', which means happy days ahead for Liverpool.

  1. Couldn't have imagined how Liverpool could cope without Gerrard at the moment. We need "succession planning" in the team.

  2. How we'd cope without Gerrard? Kenny's had to deal without Gerrard since he took over!

  3. YES my thoughts exactly... Succession planning not only in the team but with management as well so that we dont get lost again and stray from the way Liverpool FC functions!
