John BARNES: Darren Bent would not fit in at Liverpool FC

Liverpool desperately need to sign a goalscorer in the January transfer window, and the latest striker to be linked with the club is Aston Villa's Darren Bent. I'm sure many fans - myself included - would love to see him at Anfield, but Liverpool legend John Barnes is not convinced Bent is the answer.

Aston Villa manager Alex Mcleish is aware of the speculation surrounding Bent, and he recently admitted that the England International would be 'hard to replace', but if he came to Anfield, would he fit into Liverpool's style of play? Barnes is not so sure. He told TalkSport:

"It all depends on the way you actually play and you have to play to someone’s strengths.

“I don’t know if he is the type of player that Liverpool want; he likes to be direct, play over the top, run on quickly.

"Liverpool don’t play that way and as good as Darren Bent is a good goal-scorer in the right team, I don’t know whether he’d fit at Liverpool.”

I disagree with Barnesy; I think Bent would definitely fit in at Liverpool. He's much more quick and mobile than Andy Carroll, and he has the knack for being in the right place at the right time in the box.

Most importantly, Bent SCORES GOALS! He is Premier League proven and he has done the business for every team he's played for.

  1. Jamie, How many Black players has Kenny Dalglish bought that went into the 1st since John Barnes?
Bare in mind he has managed at Blackburn, Celtic and Newcastle since his Liverpool Management the first time.
    I eagerly await your reply

  2. If you look at bents goal scoring record over the years he has scored plenty of goals for mid to bottom teams in the prem and with the chances we are currently making i think he would be excellent signing.

  3. There are better players out there than bent. he would be yet another xenophobic kenny buy.

  4. he was appointed to LFC's youth academy in 2009 and thus was responsible for the signing of lots of young black players including Raheem Sterling who signed in 2010. When he was director of football at celtic he appointed John Barnes as manager. He judges players on ability and character not skin colour or religion. BTW not many black faces at Hogwarts, are you going to accuse Dumbledore of racism

  5. Against teams that play a high line, he would be very good. Possibly why he has done well for non-big clubs because they rarely come up against teams who have a desperate need to play very deep. Whereas at a big club, when they play non-big teams, those non-big teams usually play deeper and defend more compact.

Maybe that is why he wasn't so hot at Spurs, where a lot of teams would play deeper as Spurs have been a good attacking side over the years. That is the question mark for Pool. Can their tactics fit in Bent or would they have to change it quite a bit (and go back to a more Torres-Liverpool tactics under Rafa)?I don't think he suits Pool's current style of play when dominating possession and also the issue of how most small teams play against big clubs is also a possible issue for someone of the style of Bent. Also, He is more of getting in behind defences and playing right up there, looking to get on the end of through balls and ball over the top. I don't see him being that great as a goal poacher, in terms of getting on the end of the crosses at a high rate. Also, would he fit well with either Suarez (who is already having to do a lot of work than one thought he would have to in creating, considering Pool bought him for his goals. But playing alongside goalscorer Bent, would mean Suarez would yet again be away from goal more than he would like) or Carroll?

  6. Strange that J Barnes is arguing Bent would not fit in, why not some brutal honesty regarding Carroll and his evident lack of compatability with our style of football ?

Based on the fact that this is the poorest LFC team in front of goal for 20 years, we simply need to get a goalscorer, now Darren Bent is not my preffered choice but I do see it as a realistic signing over other names that have been falsley linked with the club.

Fans who expect Higuian, Villa or a Soldado need to just ask why they would consider moving from where they are to LFC - there is simply no incentive.

Whilst I am sceptical about how much Bent would cost - LFC need to realise that the options are rather limited in Jan for a proven goalscorer so it may not be a bad option for the correct price.

  7. west derby red, I stated 1st team players and you quote academy player and then go on to refer to John Barnes as a manager. Then you compound your ignorance by then quoting Harry Potter ....let me educate you ...Septimus Severus (correcting my typo) was the first ruler of Britain and he was African ...hit the google button and get educated. toddle pip!

  8. The stage is set for someone to become a hero at liverpool, that in itself is surely a draw to a high profile player who's currently lurking on the bench somewhere else.
if finishing is the only problem then the board know what they must do next week.

  9. Good to see we bid for the other Lucas, but i fear that bid is much like the 20m bid we made for richards from city and gomez from bayern-doomed.

  10. My grandmother is quicker and more agile than Andy Carroll.  Perhaps we could draft her in as well?

  11. Another January arrives and Dalglish hits the panic button once more.Just grab JHs cheque book and away we go.surely Carroll must now be given a chance to stake a claim after spending £35m on him.He is full of energy and raring to go so we must see what hes got once and for all with a run in the team.Bent is 28 next month so to spend £20m+ is ridculous to try and scrape 4th spot on the last game of the season. We shouldnt be in this position,I thought our squad was ths strongest its ever been for years.I dont want Bent at ths club.

  12. we need a person who can put the ball in the back of the net at times when we are struggling to; bent has done that everywhere. liverpool does not have a problem creating, it has a problem finishing.

  13. Andy Carroll has a great future at LFC, he is young and will come good. He has hardly had any minutes on the pitch so how he continues to be slated by all and sundry is nonsense. He can't be blamed for the lack of goals in the team because it's impossible to score when sitting on the bench. Suarez is the biggest failure, he is also a striker and has played virtually every minute of every game and yet his scoring record is abysmal. I fully expect with Gerrard back in the engine room our goal tally will rapidly increase with both Carroll and Suarez scoring more, for this reason I don't see us signing any big name striker in this window. We may sign an attacking midfielder and sell Kuyt to cover the costs but other than that I can't see us doing a lot of transfer business.

  14. The Hogwarts thing was just a joke. And obviously when KD was working for the academy he could only sign players for the academy not for the first team. As for the typos, its bear with and toodle pip but we all make such mistakes its no bigee.

  15. No probs,

Whats strange is that I know Jamie read my post but has thus far declined to answer my question Elephant in the room JAMIE!

  16. I haven't answered your question because it's not worth answering.  There's no evidence to back-up what you're inferring, and you conveniently word your question to discount players like Glen Johnson, who is a regular in the team.  As I said: not worth answering.

  17. Glen Johnson was bought by Rafa...carry on

  18. Bent is a proven goal scorer but don't think it's worth signing him if he's going to cost (as reported on other articles) at least £24 million.
Hitting the post 17 times this season doesn't mean we have shit strikers - a lot of it comes down to luck. Andy is going to have a run of games and this will be his time to get really judged now.

I'll like us to sign a quality attacking player to help score or create chances other than just Luis Suarez or Gerrard.

Why are people associating racial issues in this article - when we would all like to move on from this ordeal?! Liverpool Football club has more supporters in African and Asian countries than they do in the UK and the club rely on us all and the supporters love this football club and we will continue to stand by Liverpool through all times .. Good and bad!!!!

  19. I rather start playing Adam Morgan than sign Darren Bent. As he has showed when playing for England, Bent has terrible positional sense. Need someone with good positioning as that is a major requirement for the person who has to play next to Suarez.

  20. Enough of overrated and overpriced English players.....Carrol,Downing,Henderson.Kenny, please don't waste the owners' money. Please buy real quality striker.Stop your ego trip Kenny!

  21. Robbie Keane scores goals in the EPL too . much more than Darren Bent but look how he fits in Liverpool. Me, Ashfah loves Suarez.

  22. Severus was born April 11 AD 145 in the North African (modern Libya) city of Lepcis Magna and was of Italian heritage on his maternal side and most likely of paternal Punic origins. Though African, there is little evidence to suggest that Severus was anything other than of typical Mediterranean stock. Assertions that he was the first "black" emperor based on his African heritage fails to account for the semitic origins of the Punic (Phoenician) people and his maternal Italian heritage.
Mixed race wouldn't you say Punic/Italian bit like our player Suarez who has mixed ancestry.
First ruler of Britain are you sure how about Emperor Claudius or Emperor Hadrian(Spanish)!
What you are trying to apply against Kenny is slanderous and is foolish to write about and an insult to John Barnes.

  23. KD arguably only had the summer transfer window thus far to identify players within a reasonable time, as I recall we had been ready to sign Sylvain Marveaux but did not happen due to the medical / and or Newcastle coming in.

The basis of your argument is very childish, sorry if that offends you.

  24. Darren Bent does work well with a big strong type striker playing alongside him, scores goals everywhere he has played and has pace, it would not be the worse signing,

I can't help echoing others and give Carroll a run in the team + introduce Adam Morgan into the team, we have Bellamy and Kuyt in the ranks that should be more than able to play as a forward alongside Carroll, Morgan can start from the bench, in the past Fowler and Owen needed a break and got one, maybe could work and save a heap of cash compared to a panic buy on Bent (who i rate by the way)

As for the prat who is trying to incite more racism issues - do us all a favor and jog on!

  25. you dont have a clue what youre talking about! you quoted that he has done the business for every team hes played for. he didnt make it at spurs and as boring as villa have been lately hes not even their best striker.

    ReplyDelete
  26. he has scored for every team he has played for, his stats over a number of seasons prove he can find the net, i believe he would also find the net at Liverpool, as for spurs, talk to their fans and you will find that he was rated their as well. (did not get on with Harry though is the feeling at spurs and start a lot from the bench, sound similar?)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darren_Bent and look for the scoring stats, at villa he is still scoring 1 in every 2 games

i agree that LFC might be better served by not buying Bent, but he is proven over a fair number of seasons in the EPL and even in his worse period he stats give 1 goal in 3 games.

but i stand by what i say and he has done the business for every team he has played for

  30. Septimius Severus was born on 11 April 145 at Leptis Magna (in modern Libya), son of Publius Septimius Geta and Fulvia Pia.[2] Severus came from a wealthy, distinguished family of equestrian rank. He was of Italian Roman ancestry on his mother's side and of Punic or Libyan-Punic ancestry on his father's.[12] Severus' father was an obscure provincial who held no major political status, but he had two cousins, Publius Septimius Aper and Gaius Septimius Severus, who served as consuls under emperor Antoninus Pius. His mother's ancestors had moved from Italy to North Africa.... Mixed race of African heritage ....Obama considers himself Black of African Descent you don't like it the facts and you can't change them deal with it

  36. i disagree.
I think downing was great today.
He will start assisting and scoring soon.
He is a bit nervous to shoot, and you could see that from that weird flick on he tried to set up for Carrol.

He has a lot of talent and I think KD should stick with him. Stats is not all in life.

  37. AC is unlikely to begin his good run just yet. Indeed Gerrard's game suits him better and he had been getting the right type of service in the Newcastle game, but it is equally obvious his game needs to mature alot more. As the commentators pointed out, after he hits a return pass, he just stands still where he could easily have moved into a btter spot to shoot from if the ball came back his way. He probably never thought about where he'd like to be after hitting his reverse passes and unlike our other strikers, he has no idea how to pick a spot. These are things that appear instinctive to Bent.

I do believe once AC gets his head around these things, he would start scoring regularly for us, but it is clearly not the time yet. For now, AC needs to be able to charge at goal like he often did for Newcastle and like he did for us against Everton. I've maintained all along he will not get that kind of opportunity without Gerrard in the side as our other players will not hit diagonals at a good distance from goal. Adam prefers to hit inside out passes where our other attackers prefer to cross too close to our opponents' goals. Bent would be a great addition in that he knows how to take advantage of his teammates' movement to set himself up properly.

  38. I'm with Barnsey on this.
    Two words - Djibril Cisse.
Now, I was a fan of Djib's. He scored for fun everywhere he's been, and to be honest his record for us is better than everyone we've had since, except for Nando.
If Bent is seriously a target, then I say, keep the money in the bank and get Djib back.
Bent would be no more successful for us than Carroll has been, so far, and I'll be honest, Djib's too old now & not the type of player we need... that said, he was better out on the right, than everyone we've tried there, as well.
Seriously, I wouldn't want Djib back other than for sentimental entertainment value, but I don't rate Bent as any better than him, either.
